honestly I don’t even think the problem with the new winx show is that it’s darker(TM). People keep saying: Why does it have to be dark, Winx was a fun show and this is just a stereotypical treatment! And in a way, yes, it has become very repetitive but we also shouldn’t forget that especially the first few seasons of Winx could be pretty dark - think about the finale of the first season. Those were really dark themes.
But even the other gritty themes, I can forgive. That’s like...the smallest problem there is. The problem is what they do with it. They could have easily gone a little darker and more mature simply by challenging some of the pre-conceived notions of the Winx-universe a little bit; dug a little deeper into some aspects of the original-series (world-building, gender roles, monarchy, poverty, the standing of witches in the magical society, how to use magical powers in general, canonically ambigious characters) - that were difficult to explore in a show for kids and young teenagers. All that might have provided interesting insights and plot-points for a more mature audience and I feel like they tried that by being a little more morally ambiguous. But considering that they have pretty much remodelled the entire Winx-universe and the magical dimension, an audience who knows the original series does not get the sense that this is in any way a smart commentary on it (because it isn’t) and anyone who hasn’t seen Winx isn’t really drawn into complex, innovative magical world - it’s just somewhere between Hunger Games and Harry Potter with very little energy put into creating a world. In fact, I feel like the first few episodes of the original show, with all its limitations - did more to create a complex world than Fate.
Also, instead of making the characters more complex and actually mature, they just slapped random adult-y themes onto each character.
And a) This just...fails to be authentic and b) makes it really hard to like the characters or be invested in them. That is not to say I dislike characters who smoke week and have threesomes and while I do find it a bit ...out-of-touch and cringy to do this with Winx Club of all shows, it’s not my problem here. My problem is that this seems to be the only concept of maturity they have or rather, it’s an absolutely distorted idea of teenagers projected on them by adult writers and at this point you have to wonder. Who is the target audience here? Because the original audience of the show has no interest in seeing their childhood characters do this stuff, actual 16yo likely don’t feel represented, and older people who didn’t watch the original show will have even less reason to stay invested.
Especially, because you get about 50 different scenes in every episode so it’s hard to really get invested in who’s currently drinking, smoking weed, lying, having a threesome or whatnot. These are not character traits – these are actions and since everyone is kinda doing it to some degree or another, it’s not one that defines any character in particular. In fact, the only one stands out (sad to say bc of the white-washed mess the character is) is Terra - because she’s the one actually struggling with this kind of environment and behaviour. And while she’s sad about struggling, nothing really happens with that. She just accepts it. There is no development in her actions.
But I think it’s Stella who’s the prime example here. Now, to clarify, I haven’t watched the full series yet because I find it really hard to get through but I think she’s a great character to illustrate the problem with:
Stella, in the original series, is bubbly, loving, can be a bit self-oriented but is actually very caring. She is actually very powerful but also doesn’t really like to train. She is passionate about fashion, art and loves to share these hobbies with others. These are things we learn pretty early on in this kids show where each episode has about 20 minutes.
If we look at Fate, we never really get to know her. The first impression we get is that she is very stand-off-ish, bitter, and downright manipulative. And I like villains so that’s not so much my problem beyond the …. “that’s supposed to be Stella????”-weird-off. And the thing is, with the backstory they have given her, it might make sense that this version of Stella might turn out that way - because she internalised that treatment from her mother. But here is the problem: Original-Stella is very, very likable. It’s very easy to get invested in her problems. But that’s not the case with new Stella and they don’t really take any steps to make us invested in her problems beyond telling her story. The scene where her mother insulted her magic and humiliated her was the first one where I felt something close to an emotion for her character – but that was because her mother is objectively horrible to her child, not because of Stella’s character in particular. This scene could have happened with literally any other character and I would have felt the exact same emotion.
As an example, the reason we are shocked by the idea that she might have blinded someone is mostly because we know the original Stella and this is so absolutely out character for her. If you only watch Fate, you might learn this information and be like: “Okay, wow, what an asshole.” - but that’s it. You’re not shocked that Stella of all people would do something like that because you haven’t actually seen the loving, joyful, bubbly Stella we encounter in the orignal series. Her personality is basically non-existent (and she’s one of the more complex characters), the audience hasn’t really shared any moments with her that particular endear her or convinced us that this is shocking for any other reason than a) this is a threat for Bloom and b) wow blinding your best friend is fucked up.
Or take Musa. In the original series, we actually spend a lot of time with Musa before we learn about her backstory. And we get to know her as a happy, cheerful girl who loves music. So finding out that she actually went through a lot of pain and hardship (especially by the standards of a kids show) was actually quite the change of pace – and finding out that her father doesn’t want her to do music and doesn’t encourage her was a development you didn’t see coming. Plus, the show dedicated a lot of screen-time to this instead of giving each and every character that walks through the screen in that episode their own problems. If you look at Fate, I have yet to discover anything that Musa is really passionate about, any particular personality traits – and each and every scene is: We now cut to Musa. Musa struggles with being an empath once more. Next scene. There is no development. No plan. No perspective other than it being useful sometimes. There is no revelation.
And I feel like this is where this show falls flat: The original winx club was a very immersive show on various layers: The characters as well as the world-building. But the characters in Fate barely have any personality whatsoever. The reason the Winx worked as heroes was because you had very distinct personalities and talents (at least in the first few seasons) and while it might seem more mature to have more nuanced characters, they actually continued the same gimmicky cartoon characterisations in many ways without actually adding complexity.

Bloom Profile
I'm doing an outlined rewrite of Winx Club, and I'm dumping that out here. I did a profile of Bloom (which I plan to do for all major characters), and here it is. I'm going into characters and then planets followed by plot. You can also find this on my Archive of Our Own as the Winx Club Rewrite Outline. Without further ado, let's go!
Name: Bloom Hope Peters/Pythia Celeste Clarion
Age: 16
Gender: Female (she/her)
Birthday: December 10
Sexuality: Pansexual Polyamorous
Magic: Dragon Fire
Astrological Sign: Dragon
Status: Royalty
Occupation: Student
Affiliation: Alfea College for Fairies, Royal Family of Domino
Planet of Origin: Domino
Hobbies: Drawing, painting, reading, daydreaming, roller skating
Family: Marion Alice Clarion (Mother), Oritel Zachariel Clarion (Father), Daphne Concordia Clarion (Sister), Vanessa Jane Peters (Adopted Mother), Mike Ian Peters (Adopted Father)
Position in Team: Leader
Pixie: Lockette, Pixie of Portals
Likes: Heat, art, learning about magical history, spending time with friends, bike riding
Dislikes: Cold weather, loud chewers, being treated as lesser than others, loneliness, perfectionism
Appearance: Bloom stands at 5’8” and has a rather slender build. She’s got some muscle on her arms, but not too much for it to stand out. Her skin is a healthy tannish color since she spends quite a bit of time outside. Her eyes are a bright cerulean blue, and her skin is practically covered with freckles. She has red hair falling down her back to her hips. Bloom has defined legs due to her habits of roller skating and bike riding, meaning her lower body strength is something to marvel at. She’s as tall as she is due to her heritage of Domino, since the planet tends to provide taller people. Her ears are slightly pointed as a result of both being from Domino and having the Dragon Fire. Bloom’s regular appearance was hidden behind magic by Daphne when she was sent to Earth, rounding off her ears until her magic fully awakened. She tends to wear blue, yellow, and pink clothing, and she’s fond of wearing her hair in a ponytail from time to time. She likes crop tops and wears them quite a bit. As for legwear, she prefers something that’s easy to move around in, meaning flowing skirts have always been something for her to avoid. Bloom likes boots and tennis shoes most as far as footwear is concerned, always wanting maximum maneuverability.
Personality: Bloom is a confident, self-assured young woman, though she tends to keep her confidence on the inside. She’s an optimist through and through, always wanting to see the best in a situation. She’s easily able to get along with others due to her open, sociable nature, though it’s rare for her to make a meaningful connection this way. Despite spending a lot of time being kind to people, she hasn’t made too many close friends due to her issues with opening up to people. Bloom struggles to properly articulate herself, and she doesn’t know how to get people to get closer to her because of this. When Bloom does get closer to somebody, she tends to attach herself to them. She trusts her close friends greatly and will do anything to make them happy. Despite her confidence, Bloom can break down after a long time of putting up a chipper facade. Even if she acts optimistic most of the time, excessive negativity can drag her down quickly. She does her best to bury such to keep from scaring others, which can lead to her breaking under the pressure in a messy, self-destructive way. She can get caught up in her anger when her friends are hurt, as after spending so much time as an outcast, she refuses to see those who she has slipped in with hurt. Overall, Bloom is a confident, analytical young woman who, at the time of the series starting, wants to make close friends but doesn’t know how to approach such. She can snap under pressure at times but wants the best for others at all times.
Background: Bloom was born sixteen years before the events of the series as Princess Pythia Celeste Clarion of Domino. She was the younger sister of Daphne and the daughter of Marion and Oritel. She possessed the Dragon Fire from birth as a result of her mother holding such a power. When Pythia was roughly six months old, Domino was invaded by the Ancestral Witches’ spirits. They were angry at being forced into a state between life and death during a previous battle with the Company of Light, and they decided to destroy Domino out of anger and a need for revenge. On top of this, they were tasked by Darkar to claim the Dragon Fire to hopefully open the door to Relix. The Ancestral Witches destroyed Domino utterly, linking the planet’s life with Obsidian, the world where they originated from and the home of dark energy. Domino itself was turned into a frosty wasteland while all its life was transported into Obsidian. Marion and Oritel were lost trying to seal away the Ancestral Witches, and while they succeeded, the Witches and Domino’s people were lost to Obsidian. The planet itself remained in the same location, but only the setting remained while the people were gone. In the midst of the destruction, Daphne was killed by the Ancestral Witches for getting in the way of their destruction of Domino. She was left trapped in the same state in between life and death of the Ancestors, who wanted her to suffer the way they had at the hands of her parents. Daphne retrieved a baby Pythia and sent her off to Earth, trying to leave her in the care of a magical creature there named Eldora. However, such failed, and Pythia wound up in the heart of a burning building. The Ancestors caught up to Daphne and forcefully removed her from Domino, sending her to Lake Roccaluce. Pythia was encased in magic by Daphne, who managed to reach out with her magic to protect her on Earth. When Mike arrived on the scene, he saw the young child crying in a sphere of energy and picked her up. He brought her out of the fire and asked around to see if any parents had lost their child. No lives were lost in the fire, meaning her parents dying wasn’t an option. After some heavy deliberation with his wife, Vanessa, the couple decided to adopt the young child, and they named her Bloom. Bloom grew up in a rather positive environment, having loving parents who did everything to keep her happy despite not having all the money in the world. She helped in her mother’s flower shop and grew to enjoy art throughout her childhood. Bloom especially grew to love fairies, drawing them often and being infatuated with fiction regarding them. Her obsession was quiet, but she spent much time daydreaming of what her life would be like if it changed that way. She didn’t ever have many close friends due to her being thought of as ‘the weird art kid’ despite how kind she was. She was planning on going to college as an art major with a minor in folklore and mythology. Bloom longed for more throughout her life, and she wound up finding it when Stella ran into her in the park on the first day of summer vacation.
Other: Bloom spent some time roller skating at the local rink growing up, making her rather talented in the sport. However, she never took up being on the team due to the clique-based nature of her town. She had a long-standing rivalry with Mitzi throughout her childhood after Bloom beat her in an art competition when they were in grade school. Mitzi kept this up and grew to enjoy tormenting Bloom for her minor loneliness over time despite Bloom not wanting to continue the rivalry for any reasons. Her getting on Mitzi’s bad side is one of the reasons nobody hangs out with her, as everybody in school follows Mitzi’s word nearly religiously.
Position in Team:
As the leader, Bloom is the one who keeps the Winx Club together. She’s responsible for rallying her companions to a cause, pulling them together for the upcoming battles. She glues the team together as the one who keeps others in check. Bloom tends to be the deciding voice on most choices, but she gives everyone the chance to speak at all times. Her optimism keeps the team together, and her outward displays of confidence makes it easy for others to follow her.
Dynamics:
Stella: Bloom and Stella are best friends, even if they’re radically different. Stella’s ability to be confident and optimistic even in the darkest of situations is like Bloom’s attitude, meaning they mesh well. Stella is more brutally honest than Bloom, but the latter is always up to constructive criticism. Stella’s confidence is much more persistent than Bloom’s, meaning Stella is always the person to go to when Bloom needs extra assurance. Stella’s honesty also helps with seeing things from a different perspective.
Flora: As roommates, Bloom and Flora get along well. Flora is a realist with a quiet nature who could use somebody to pull her out of her introverted shell, and Bloom is happy to be that person. Flora, in turn, is a shoulder for Bloom to cry on as the most compassionate and empathetic of the girls, meaning Bloom shares her insecurities with Flora often. In turn, Bloom offers Flora reassurance when she needs it most. The two rarely, if ever, get into arguments.
Musa: Musa and Bloom have a similar sense of humor, tending to be sarcastic as a way of masking their upset. They have a horrible habit of burying their feelings and can easily pick up on when others are unhappy, even if they don’t know what to do about it. When Bloom needs somebody to scream and punch something with, Musa is often the one who offers to help her, gladly offering a different perspective on the issues Bloom is facing. They enjoy talking about boys together, even if they know little about romance.
Tecna: Bloom has a habit of thinking with her feelings instead of logic, which is the complete opposite of Tecna. While Bloom hides her feelings, Tecna doesn’t know how to show them at all. Their occasional issues with communication make them similar. Bloom longs to reach out to Tecna and get closer with Tecna, but she doesn’t know how to do so. They’re polar opposites, but they still get along well and hold no ill will towards one another despite their differences.
Aisha: Aisha and Bloom’s issues with loneliness in the past can connect seamlessly. While Aisha’s human contact in general was limited, Bloom was around people but never got close to them. They’re able to connect over their pasts without companionship and happily assure one another that they’re secure and will have friends forever now that the Winx has been established. They’re both fond of sports as well, putting up a small competitive barrier between the two, though it’s all in good fun.
Roxy: Roxy looks up to Bloom as a mentor, and Bloom thinks of her as a little sister in return. They treat each other as siblings, protective over each other and always making sure the other is safe. Bloom can empathize with Roxy’s concerns over being a princess of a lost kingdom, causing the two to be incredibly close. Roxy’s self-doubt echoes Bloom’s in a way, making the two as similar as they are close. They get along well but tend to get too overprotective at times.
Daphne: Daphne is protective of Bloom and vice versa. They get along well and care greatly for each other despite spending years apart. Daphne hesitates to share information with her sister despite how close they are out of fear of Bloom getting hurt, though deep down Daphne knows Bloom is old enough to understand that bad things happen in the world. Daphne fondly speaks to Bloom and acts as a shoulder to cry on when Bloom doesn’t want to take problems up directly with the Winx.
Diaspro: Bloom and Diaspro had an admittedly rocky relationship when they first met. The truth behind Sky rattled them both, but they never got into a fight over it. Bloom and Diaspro helped each other to move past what happened with Sky to find happiness afterwards. Even if Diaspro gets snippy at times, Bloom can bring her back to her senses easily. Diaspro and Bloom spend a lot of time together ranting about the universe, though it usually ends with them laughing over some random thing or another.
Sky: Sky and Bloom fit together quickly after meeting due to their quiet confidence and issues with loneliness growing up. As a prince, Sky was surrounded by people who wanted to use him, leading him to have trust issues around most. Since Sky and Bloom got to know each other without pretenses of royalty, Sky knows that she would never betray him. Their faith in each other is unwavering, and they’ve got incredibly compatible personalities due to their pasts and ambiverted yet confident natures.
Brandon: Bloom admires Brandon’s confidence above all else. He’s constantly sure of himself, and she wishes that she could be like that. Despite her facade of confidence, Bloom struggles with self-doubt and bottles her emotions, wishing she could be more open with her feelings and confident in herself like Brandon. She trusts him greatly not only with Stella’s feelings, but as a member of the team as well. She also knows him as Sky’s best friend and trusts him as such as well.
Riven: Riven and Bloom have the rockiest relationship as far as the latter is concerned with the Specialists. Riven’s issues with being short-tempered and hotheaded clash with Bloom’s ideologies of kindness unless someone shows they do not deserve it. Riven tends to be snippy, and his comments upset Bloom and are the cause of a few of her breakdowns. When Riven improves and gets better for the most part, they reach a quiet, unspoken agreement of mutual respect.
Timmy: Timmy and Bloom share their love of history and talk about it often. Since Bloom grew up on Earth away from the magical universe, she has a lot to learn about the history of the Magic Dimension. Timmy is happy to teach her about such, finding it to be the most intriguing topic taught in schools. When Bloom has questions about cultural references, she instantly turns to Timmy to ask him about it. He responds with detailed answers, and Bloom eats up every word.
Helia: Bloom and Helia share their love of the arts. Helia and Bloom are both natural artists and share sketches with one another often. When Helia needs someone to bounce poetry ideas off, he often turns to Bloom, leading to a myriad of inside jokes between the two. He taught her how to make origami after a variety of meetings involving practicing other forms of art together. The two both care for Flora greatly as well and tend to conspire on how to make her happy with surprises.
Nabu: At first, Bloom is unsure as to if she should trust Nabu due to his secretive nature when they first meet. After seeing Nabu spend time with Aisha, Bloom grew to trust Nabu more, knowing that Aisha could make her own decisions and wouldn’t place her faith in someone she couldn’t completely trust. They don’t talk often, but when they do, an awkward Nabu is asking for help on how to woo Aisha. Bloom gives him as many tips as possible to see Aisha happier.
Faragonda: Faragonda acts as a mentor to Bloom who nurtures her magical growth at Alfea. Since Bloom doesn’t have magical parental figures to discuss her problems with, she turns to Faragonda often. Bloom visits the headmistress most out of the Winx, asking her for advice often. Faragonda feels obligated to care for Bloom after spending years feeling guilty over the loss of Oritel and Marion, though this obligation changes more into actual care after the two spend much time together.
Mirta: Mirta and Bloom both enjoy art, sketching specifically. Mirta tends to draw more abstract subjects and can relate to Bloom’s upbringing as an outcast from the rest of her peers. The two have made multiple agreements to fight each other’s bullies at various points in time, though these threats are never followed through on and are instead the source of many jokes between the two. Mirta and Bloom write jokingly edgy poetry together as well to laugh at them afterwards.
Marion: Bloom doesn’t know how to reach out to Marion. While Marion is her birth mother and someone she spent years searching for, Bloom doesn’t know how to approach her since she wasn’t raised by the Queen of Domino. Marion cares grealy for Bloom but knows that she needs her space, being quiet and passive in her moves to get closer to Bloom. The two make small steps to get to know one another better, but these steps still mean a lot to them both.
Oritel: Oritel is protective of both Bloom and Daphne, thinking of them as the best things to ever happen to him. Oritel doesn’t know how to show he cares for Bloom, instead watching her from a distance with the promise that he’ll always support her. Bloom wants to get closer to him but doesn’t know how since she didn’t have time to get to know him during her childhood. Oritel still does his best to help her work into Domino society, teaching her about the culture with a broad smile.
Mike: Mike is a protective father to Bloom, a result of the way they first met. After seeing Bloom in the fire, Mike grew to hate seeing her in pain, not wanting to repeat the suffering she seemed to be going through the night of the father. He tends to spoil her at times, and he treats her like a little girl at times though he has good intentions. Mike treats Bloom as his pride and joy, loving her above all others. His pride for his adopted daughter is immeasurable, and he trusts her fully.
Vanessa: Vanessa is a much more sensitive counterpart to Mike. She cares greatly for Bloom and wants to see her happy, being gentle and kind always. Bloom always goes to Vanessa first when she has issues with expressing her emotions, and Vanessa helps her the best she can. Vanessa is perceptive enough to realize when Bloom is upset and is often the one to get her to open up about her problems when she’s having a bad day. Vanessa is proud of her daughter’s work in the magical universe.
Lockette: Lockette and Bloom bonded so quickly for a reason. Lockette isn't too sure of herself, easily giving into her fears and anxieties, making her a lot like the version of Bloom the latter tries to hide. Lockette is working on talking out her issues with Bloom, lessening her issues with anxiety slowly. In turn, Lockette can sense when Bloom is upset, encouraging her more to talk about her regularly bottled emotions. The two also share their habit of making decisions emotionally.

Winx Club season 8/21
In which we all do some DDR.
21 Dance Contest on Melody
More Musa/Riven stuff, strap in guys!  I swear, this season turned me from not caring about that ship to hating it with a fiery passion.  Come on relationship, redeem yourself already so I can go back to standing peacefully outside all fandom drama sources like I want to!
Alfea!  Grizelda is teaching “magical self defense class”  in the courtyard.  I like how we’re seeing all the teachers—except Avalon, I wonder what happened to him!  They’re doing magic shield practice and Knut and Kiko are shooting cannonballs with a catapult to be shielded against. I wonder if shields against a physical object and shields against a magic zap are a different spell.  But grizelda says the cannonballs ‘simulate a magic attack’ so maybe not.
Stella’s shield is a gold star.
Musa is up next, she practiced a lot but her phone rings just at the wrong time. Riven wants to go out for ice cream!  Musa does not sound enthused, like at all.
So they’re back together?  I don’t really remember them getting back together.  My guess is here’s what happened: the second-half writers were told that part of the plot in the first half was that Musa and Riven would get back together, and then the first-half writers… flubbed it.  It happens to us all, you get to the end of the story and realize you didn’t manage to do one of the things you were planning to do.
Or else this ice cream date is Riven’s attempt to actually get back together.
Because she’s paying attention to her phone she nearly gets beaned with a cannonball, and then Knut launches Kiko from the catapult, and then the star box appears to save us from the slapstick.
...Is this a glitch?  The box floats there silently and the Tecna says something about the world of music.  I think the dubbers forgot to put in the sound file!
I like that the minor fairies also gather around to hear the star box.  I wonder if some of them are hoping in their hearts that this time the box will say it’s someone else’s destiny to find the prime star.  We never see the minor fairies being jealous, but they must be, the Winx get to do everything and they’re singers too!
Bloom asks to be excused and Grizelda says the fate of the magic universe is indeed more important than their lesson.
So Musa texts Riven that they have to go save the universe again.  Flora says Musa should give him one more chance, “it’s just ice cream.”  Flora, I love you but quit pressuring Musa! -_-
Musa: ‘I don’t need him telling me his feelings unless he can show me!”  Uh, I agree with the sentiment Musa, but that’s what he did with the hologram projector and all that showed was that he’s a bonehead. But Musa perks up because she’ll get to see her dad.
Bloom is concerned about the Trix getting there ahead of them, but Stella says there’s no way the Trix could be there already and we cut to…
The Trix were there already!  Aerial zappy battle for the star, which is on top of one of these really cool giant rock spires that have the tops carved into treble clefs.  Love the geography!  I want to imagine who carved these things, I wonder how people know when they move into a realm what kind of magic it will have.  The girls’ home realms each have a certain flavor, while Magix isn’t associated with any particular kind of magic. Imagine being an explorer visiting new realms to discover their magic...
In the fight the prime star gets dislodged and its little hamster ball goes sailing off towards the city.  Everybody follow it!
Musa says, ‘it’s flying toward the Melody disco!”  wait, is that whole thing a disco?  The scales of things are sometimes confusing, I thought it was a whole city but maybe it’s just one building.
Cut to… a disco! Or some kind of… do nightclubs really look like that?  Colored lights, big speakers, several levels of dance floors, big screens. Very cool.  The partygoers do not look particularly traditionally Asian, they’re all colors and wearing big pants and hats and sweaters.  I think this is like, Asian punk clothing?  K-pop style? I don’t follow K-pop and I don’t go to night clubs, but if they looked like this I might.
And there’s Galatea!  The art style has actually made her look older than she was, she’s wearing the same dress as when we saw her in the sovereign council, that super skinny dress with the ruffles up front. I feel like the very classical-music Galatea should look more uncomfortable at this not-classical club, she doesn’t fit aesthetically, but she’s having a grand time announcing the annual Melody disco competition.
The Winx come in, Musa says this is Melody’s biggest party and Galatea organizes it every year.  it’s like her pet project, I love it!  Galatea holds up the prize for the “dancing queen”, a crown with a treble clef on it, and the prime star landed inside.
Ok, it flew from outside and landed perfectly in the crown and Galatea’s holding it up and doesn’t notice?  Come on. ...was what I wrote when watching in Italian, but in English it’s even worse because Galatea did see it and she just says, ‘this crown and a special extra that just fell from above.”  So Galatea doesn’t recognize an important magical item or wonder where it came from or why… groan.
So Musa goes, “Hey, Galatea, old friend, we need that star and then you can go back to enjoying your contest!” and Galatea gives it to her--
Not.  That is not what happens.
Flora does suggest they just ask for the star but Musa says it won’t be that easy, “Princess Galatea takes this event very seriously.”
The Trix are here too.  Icy tries some magic to “bring down the house!” and it doesn’t work and all the punk kids glare at her.  She looks quite worried for just being glared at by a bunch of punk kids!
Galatea says very prissily, “Remember, the disco is protected against magic attacks, so no cheating please.”  I dunno if it’s just me but I’m seeing Galatea as, she acts all prissy but she’s like a stealth nerd who pretends to be all formal but secretly just has a ball going off on nerd stuff.  Or in this case, disco.  Maybe that’s just me reading what I want to see into the character ‘cause it’s such a fun image of her.
Anyway, we’ll just have to win the contest to get the prime star!
Bloom seems pretty happy about this, and Aisha says the star case mentioned harmony so winning a music contest would make sense as a way to get the star.
Stella says, ‘everybody, hold still!” and gets everyone dressed up. Gradient-colored outfits with neon edging.  Bloom comes off worst, the designers couldn’t bring themselves to go with blue so she’s in mostly a muddy purple and her hairstyle is not good.  Flora’s is similarly blah, Musa has cute banding across her top and I like her very ninties hair.  Tec is cute in green and Stella in yellow. Aisha’s turquoise with purple neon looks the best, and she says this might be the best outfit Stella’s ever put together.
Are these dolls?  I hope so.  I not-so-secretly want Winx dolls with glow in the dark elements, because I want them to be Moondreamers.  Cosmix totally granted my Winx-moondreamers wish, except for the glow in the dark stuff part!
Musa’s ready to dance but the others tell her to go see her dad while she can.  The others mention Aisha is a talented dancer, yay for them remembering that.  So Musa goes to visit her dad.
The Trix notice Musa’s leaving and Darcy wants to go after her to make sure she doesn’t “know something we don’t.”  Smart, Darcy!  Icy grabs her sister and says they have to win the crown.  But Darcy says, ‘You don’t need me, you have our secret weapon.”  What weapon?
Icy and Stormy get their dance clothes on and they look awesome!  Way better than the Winx.  Icy’s hairdo is a bit much but other than that they rock.
We cut to Red Fountain.  Sky and Brandon are sparring.  Riven is brooding about Musa avoiding him.  Sky says he should try talking to her, but Riven says every time they talk they end up arguing.  Brandon suggests they argue because they have strong feelings.  Sky says, “Talk to musa face to face, show her your feelings.’  which is what Riven’s been trying to… sigh.
Back on Melody Stella offers to help explain the dance contest rules.  Galatea recognizes her by name so the girls totally could call on their friendship with Galatea to get the star.  it’s also cool that one royal recognizes another.
This dance contest is like DDR Twister, anywhere on the floor can light up and also spots in the air.  I cannot wait until this is a real thing in AR. It’s coming, people.  It’s coming.
Stella eventually flubs it, she gets catapulted off the stage and lands in Bloom’s arms.  Galatea explains if a dancer misses even one step she’ll be eliminated
Icy vs Flora dance! People recognize Icy, Galatea does… and nobody calls the police to report public enemies on the loose and in the same room with the princess!  People cheer for Icy like she’s a normal contestant. Maybe they don’t realize she’s THAT Icy..?
Bloom says, “Icy’s not bad!” in both Italian and English.  Flora grins cutely the whole time and is pretty adorable, but she loses and gets carried off the stage in a bubble which pops, dropping her in Aisha’s arms.
I used to love DDR. I was terrible at it, but it’s fun.
Darcy is following Musa to her house.  Musa meets her dad!  Hugs!  Musa’s house is cool, it’s Asian-ish with like, lines of music along the roof..
Inside, screens, sliding doors, Asian style tea set.  Musa remembers her childhood with her parents, it’s really sweet.  Baby Musa has two pigtails. There’s a huge double-harp, it has part an upright normal harp and part a bench with harp strings over it and Matlin and Ho-boe played it together.  I wonder if that’s a real thing, it’s like the sofa of harps.  Hoe-bo calls it the “Harmony harp” and says even the stars come to listen.  It can only be played by two people whose hearts are in harmony, so hoe-bo hasn’t been able to play it since Matlin died.
Darcy: ‘What a sweet moment.  I’d better ruin it right away.”
pffft!  Darcy, I love you, never change.
Tecna vs Stormy dance!   Stormy says it’s time for the Trix to unleash their secret weapon, but Tecna isn’t worried.  She says the dance contest is kind of like a video game.  And it is, but you need physical strength and speed too.   If I were writing this I’d have Tecna say, “Anything where you can ‘level up,’ I can win!’
Stormy turns out to be “better than Icy… a lot better.”   Tec gets farther than Flora did and ends up in a perfect tie with Stormy.  Galatea chirps, “Double perfect!” and tec says ‘achievement unlocked” again. They go to a higher level that’s like breakdancing where you have to spin around on your back and stuff.   Eventually Stormy wins.
Galatea should not be so chipper about public enemy numbers one and three winning her contest.  She knows who the Trix are, she’s calling them by name…
Stella runs right up to icy, “wait-wait-wait, STORMY was your secret weapon?”
Stormy: ‘Five time dance witch champion.”
Icy: ‘She’s kind of a rising star in the world of dark dance competitions.”
Bloom: “Dark dance competitions?”
Aisha: “It’s a thing.  Unfortunately.”
Ok that was great.  and Aisha’s delivery of that last line was spot on.
Musa is eating ice cream with her dad, it’s sweet.  He asks why ice cream and guesses it’s about Riven.  Musa says, “It’s not about Riven.  It’s never about Riven actually.”  Hmm.
Darcy is lurking outside, she says ‘Musa’s making this too easy.  I’ll finish it with a single shot.” O_o
thankfully riven turns up to save the day.  They fight but Darcy can do all her illusion stuff and she wins without too much trouble, and puts a mind control spell on Riven.  She sounds just delighted at her new plaything.  Now she can cause even more havok!
Musa hears a noise outside and thinks it’s the Trix, but it’s Riven.  She invites him in, and she sounds… not drama-y.  She just apologizes for canceling their date and says they can have ice cream now.  Darcy gloats.
Next time: more dancing!  Riven and Musa!  Stormy wins the contest!  Gee, that’s a spoiler.
