Plus-size Elf is execrable on its own merits, but it also clogged up the cool niche of fat elves. Elves are cool, but in the concept that they're all beautiful and glamorous, there's a lot of ugly prejudices you can infer from their design, if they're not said outright. Fat elves are a middle finger to some of those prejudices, but are also rad as hell in their own right.

Literally the one thing you'd hope out of a comic called Plus-size Elf is that is, either thematically or just visually, a celebration of plus-size elves. But instead it's the hideous offspring of diet culture and fetishization, without any merit to it.

With most things that suck, you can just not read it, but here I'm convinced that it's invaded the fat elf bloodstream and displaced stuff with genuine merit like some kind of artistic carbon monoxide. It's set fat elves back by decades (which is not a lot in the elf lifespan, but it's huge in artistic movements).

Who would want to make more things with fat elves when, not only has it been done in a very high profile, but it was cringe?

#no offence to people who like it #it's just that it's objectively bad at all levels and is especially bad at the very niche it has carved out for itself #and that its fame is an embarrassment to comic fans and a testament to the hatred of fat women in art and indeed society #and that it's not even bad in the way that inspires its audience to create something better #but in a disgusting soulless way that gives you pause about putting your own art out there #for fear of making something half as bad as this #dungeon meshi has some problems irt fat people but better on that front and terrific overall because it's made with love and thought #if i wanted to read about elves and nutrition i would read dungeon meshi #and if I wanted to read more about elves and nutrition I would read more dungeon meshi before I read this shit
