I guess if show didn't treat Marinette as their favorite punching bag and lukanette as a thing to get over with to be back on love square bullshit I wouldn't be this salty. But I mlb writers for setting things up, canonizing them over provocative tweet and leave them to dust right at the beginning of s4. I don't know what's your opinion on soulmate and destiny thing, but I'm totally in opposite. I remember The Good Place (love the series btw!) quote about how soulmates are made with love and nurture of people and not some cosmic forces. And to see how show is pushing for Destiny ™️ I'm kinda disheartened. But I guess I never really liked love square execution in the first place when it turned out that Marinette is butt of the crush joke for 3 seasons and there's 0 development from that. It’s so strange how all their attempts to push for the love square just push me more towards Lukanette. How do the writers do that???

Lol, just imagine the entire battle being sidetracked by Luka being brought to tears by how selfless and sweet his girlfriend is while Shadow Moth is too distracted by how this will ruin his reputation to get him back on track.

Luka and Juleka were “accidents,” but Anarka kept it a secret from Jagged since Jagged was already hyped up to go on his next tour and Anarka knew their relationship was crumbling (possibly he already dumped her as his guitarist and she was annoyed about it). Jagged eventually learns that he has kids and is hesitant towards the idea, but because of him doting on Marinette (who’s the same age as his kids), he opens up to the idea.

Anarka and Jagged in present are mixed between tolerating each other for the sake of their kids and being chaotic best friends. The bad blood died out a while ago and there’s occasional tension but because Anarka is a single woman not interested in Jagged and Jagged is single with a possible thing for Penny, they make it work

Anarka and Penny have an awkward relationship. Penny wants to schedule time for Jagged to hang with Luka and Juleka and Anarka is confused at the very concept of a schedule, like just take them whenever okay??? isn’t it easier that way??? and Penny is like, “...oh, I guess so?”

Jagged and Penny, it depends on if they’re in any sort of relationship. If they’re in a relationship, Penny is either open to the idea of him learning to be good with kids if she’ll eventually want kids with him, or mixed because these are another woman’s kids and it’s really awkward. If they’re not in a relationship, then Penny could also be mixed since she’s crushing on him but I could also see her either finding it sweet that Jagged wants to hang out with his kids or finding it a hassle to schedule them in.

Jagged and Luka is rough. Luka has so many conflicting feelings on his idol ending up being his father. Jagged will probably even comment on Luka’s shirt + necklace and all of Luka’s merch in an attempt to bond but that kind of comes off desperate/awkward and Luka’s not about that life. I could also see Luka taking all the stuff down and swapping out his shirt, but being hesitant to remove the necklace because it’s a gift from Marinette. He might try to wash off the signature. He knows it’s not Jagged’s fault exactly but Anarka seemed to have bad blood with him and even if they get along now, Luka’s bitter. Jagged meanwhile wants to connect with Luka because hey musician energy!! but is gonna mess up a lot and say a lot of awkward things. Marinette will probably have to be a middle man between the two because it’s easier for them to talk with her around.

Jagged and Juleka don’t have a significant relationship at first. Juleka never care who her father was and she wasn’t crazy about Jagged Stone like Luka was. Jagged does try to connect with her but they clash majorly due to Jagged being so “loud” and Juleka being so quiet. Jagged will see it as a huge accomplishment the day where Juleka says something coherent (i.e: not a mumble) to him.

Yeah though, keep in mind for all of this that I’m not a family relationship kinda girl, so this isn’t my forte (I’m probably the most sympathetic to Jagged out of the whole fandom; not to say I agree with his actions but I have a history of hating babies and children, so not cool of him if he ditched Anarka but like, I get it, doesn’t make him better but I get it from a non-realistic standpoint of “ew, parenting”).

Honestly, I find it really interesting. Plus, it’s Truth who’s being told those things, not Luka, and Truth has other priorities.

And--I mean, I’m positive that Luka got into the relationship knowing that Marinette wasn’t completely over Adrien. She wanted to see if they’d work and he wanted to date her. It’s both of them being a little selfish in a way and I like that.

That’s why I think he doesn’t have a big reaction to the Adrien call. He seems amused more than anything, and Luka is empathetic also so he knows not to take Marinette’s stammering/mistakes to heart because she doesn’t mean them. We already had evidence of that in “Desperada.”

It's absolutely anger-inducing because it tries too hard to let the audience know to forget about Luka because Adrien is lurking in the corner and he and Marinette are endgame. But what bothers me the most is that everyone saying that Marinette loves Adrien is accepted as truth even when Marinette herself says she's over Adrien. Her words are ignored, how she feels is ignored, because everyone else(including the girl squad, when they're supposed to be her "friends") tells her that she's supposed to be in love with Adrien, and so she "has" to go along with it because ENDGAME. It's the show saying "stupid naive Marinette, you're too immature and dumb to know how you really feel, let someone else do the thinking for you!"

Meanwhile Adrien moving on with Kagami is accepted even when he still flirts with Ladybug(and forces her to build up his ego when he asks her what she admires most about him; I know it was a spur of the moment thing, but meta-wise, it was obvious love square pushing.), because "he's trying to respect her feelings and date someone else!" It's one of the main gripes I have with the show: that teenage girls are too emotional and confused to know what they really want, but teenage boys are mature and rational enough to make up their minds about who they love without holding any animosity towards anyone.

The all-white, all-male writing team pushes the Chinese girl's feelings aside and forces her to hide and erase them if they're not want they want her to feel, while the white boy gets congratulated with a pat on the back for doing the bare minimum and always, ALWAYS, takes the moral high ground(even in superhero form when he's supposedly goofy.). When she's the lead.

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK

It’s just tiring. It’s not even me being sick of the love square, but it being forced into everything when it’s not even relevant. The episode strategically throws more and more of Marinette’s Adrien crush (I did the math, I know this) into the mix and it provides nothing but the same tired jokes. Heck, they keep leaning on the lucky charm Marinette let him borrow (not GAVE, let him BORROW) back in Season 1 because they basically have nothing else to go off of.

Watching this volume and seeing Ruby and Ironwood forcing their choices onto Penny is making me appreciate Ozpin all the way back in V3 making it damn clear that Pyrrha is choosing to become a Maiden of her own free will, to the point of needing her vocal assent every step of the way, even before starting the Aura transfer machine when the lack of time was at its highest.

Same, anon. In fact, the longer the story goes on the more I appreciate Ozpin, period.

Others speak for their allies or make decisions without bothering to confer with the team? Ozpin always asks for consent and listens to others’ opinions, even when it’s clear he doesn’t agree with them (Ironwood).

Others kept the Salem secret with major repercussions, but continually ignore their responsibility in how things have turned out? Ozpin kept the Salem secret and immediately apologized for how things turned out. Twice.

Others take hard stances, going so far as to physically attack their allies rather than strive for a compromise? One of the first things Ozpin says when he gets back is that they need to find a way to work together.

To say nothing of how the longer things go on, the more convinced I am that Ozpin had the right idea overall. He wanted this war to be fought with trustworthy adults with information given on a need-to-know basis. Was it perfect? No. Could he have trusted those allies more than he did? Absolutely, but he was still on the right track overall. Ozpin said, ‘Telling people about Salem when it’s not 100% necessary leads to panic, depression, betrayal, and allies turning on each other - furthering her cause. We should avoid that! We should also let kids be kids as long as possible and have more experienced adults making these tough decisions.’ Now... this is what we’ve got. A group of traumatized, inexperienced teenagers started calling the shots, the Salem secret was given to (almost) everyone, people were trusted with sensitive information without cause (Robyn), and as Yang has - hypocritically - pointed out, things are really, really bad. Is everything the characters’ fault when Salem decided to suddenly launch an attack? Of course not... but things could be a whole lot better too. It kind of amazes me that this guy has:

Thousands of years of experience in managing this specific crisis

Lifetimes’ worth of knowledge

Magic from literal gods

A resume that includes creating an “extraordinary time of peace” and establishing the very profession that everyone else is using to defend the world

Yet the entire cast is like, ‘Ozpin? Why would we let him help us? He made mistakes! ⋋_⋌ ’

So... did you? Like everyone is currently, as we speak, making extraordinarily big mistakes, so I’m failing to see where this high horse came from.

Riley Brooks is a waitress in a ‘Dive bar” in New York. One Saturday night, her past comes back to haunt her as some unfamiliar punters enter her bar on a bachelor party- one of them being someone who she was once close to.

After her night out with her friends, Riley returned to her apartment and began quickly packing a suitcase- throwing essential things in. Not really knowing what to pack due to her drunk mind- her suitcase was bulging. Beth decided to help her pack and the two women sat on the suitcase hoping the bulge would disappear. Struggling to close it shut, they eventually did it, nearly breaking the zip- both out of breath.

The morning after, Beth had offered to drive a nerve wrecked Riley to the airport. Slightly regretting agreeing to this, panic began to take over. Her hands became clammy, her heart began to hammer. Could she actually do this? No backing out now.

Riley arrived in Cordonia after a long flight, just before the flight had landed she took in the beautiful views that Cordonia had to offer. She had often wondered why Drake would want to uproot from this paradise.

Collecting her bag from the carousel, she headed over to the pick up area- feeling nervous about meeting a man she had only met the once. It was like a blind date. Taking a deep breath, she scoured the waiting area. Anxious about what was going to happen, she heard her name being screeched.

“RILEYYYY!”

Riley turned slowly to the direction that the voice was coming from. She noticed Maxwell, holding a sign ‘Hot New York Waitress’. For fucks sake- she thought. Was this going to be her nickname from now on. Besides she wasn’t a waitress anymore- she had informed her manager through text that she wasn’t returning to work, he was pissed with her giving him no notice but she didn’t care. Now was the time to be selfish. If she ever returned to New York there would be plenty of other waitressing jobs available.

“Hey, Maxwell. Is that my nickname- ‘Hot New York waitress’? You know most people call me Riley or Ri for short.”

“Well it’s my nickname for you- for the moment. Unless we can think of another one...How about blossom? Blossom on a tree is beautiful like you, your precious and by the end of this social season you are going to bloom into the most perfect ‘fake’ noble lady around. By the way most people call me Max for short. Come on, let me take your case and let’s get out of here!”

Riley gazed at Max, was he attempting to flirt? Or was he just genuinely a nice down to earth guy. Blossom was better than Hot New York waitress, so she agreed. She insisted on pulling her own suitcase, but lost the battle as the young gentleman wouldn’t allow her to ‘pull a muscle’. They entered the SUV borrowed from the palace. On arrival to Ramsford, Riley couldn’t believe the sight- it was stunning. The land was huge, the greenery and flowers that surrounded it provided a soft fragrance that drifted around the manor.

“Welcome to my home Little blossom, it’s not as grand as most places, but it’s home.”

“Are you kidding me? It’s amazing! I bet your bathroom is as big as my whole apartment!”

Maxwell laughed at her, she was like a kid in a candy shop. The manor had deteriorated in the last few years due to the Beaumont’s financial situation. Maxwell took Riley for a tour around the manor- her mouth was agape the whole time.

“You think this is nice- just wait until you see the Palace.”

“Is it like living in a fairytale?” Riley sounded cliche but the sights she was already seeing was a real eye opener about how other people live.

“Of course! I can’t wait to take you there later. Liam went to the boutique before and picked you up a choice of dresses for your grand entrance into court.”

“My what?” Reality finally hit Riley. She wasn’t a waitress from New York anymore.

“Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. As soon as you enter, you’ll tell the herald your name and title so you can be announced. What’s your surname?”

“Brooks.”

“Ah that’s why Drake called you Brooks. That did confuse me a bit. Well as you’re part of my house- you are technically now known as a Lady. How would you like to be pronounced? Lady Riley Brooks of House Beaumont or Lady Riley of New York. The choice is up to you.”

“Erm, is just Lady Riley fine?”

“Of course. Come on, let’s try these dresses on. I bet Drake won’t be able to take his eyes off of you. We will have some lunch, just chill- then head to the palace.”

Maxwell and Riley spent some time getting to know one another. Maxwell couldn’t believe that Drake would keep her a secret- she was like a hidden gem. He knew that he liked her instantaneously and that they were going to be the best of friends or BFF’s as he told her.

Maxwell handed Riley the two dress bags- one contained a white angel style dress and the other a red Devil style dress, both accompanied with a glittery matching mask. Maxwell explained that the white dress would prove that she and Drake are ‘a match made in heaven’ - and that the red dress would make her look that hot she would be almost be on fire. Riley decided to choose the red dress, it cling onto her curves effortlessly with it being form-fitting, showing off her perfect body.

“Oh Riley, you look beautiful.”

“Thank you. But isn’t this a bit too much?”

Maxwell smiled at Riley’s naivety, she was going to get a big shock when she saw all the outfits that were due to come with every event.

“Nah, you look perfect. I’ll let Liam know that we are ready to head over to the palace. Throughout the social season we will all be staying there. It’ll be like one big sleepover.”

As the doors opened to the grand looking ballroom, Maxwell and Riley were announced by the herald. Linking arms, Maxwell noticed that Riley was shaking. This whole situation was new to her- of course she was going to be a nervous wreck.

“Ri, are you okay? I need to find my brother, Bertrand to talk to him for a sec. I’ll introduce you to Lady Hana Lee, she is lovely. I think you’ll both get on like a house on fire. I don’t want you to mingle on your own.”

Riley nodded, as Maxwell introduced her to Hana, she believed that this woman was like an angel- she reminded her of her friend Beth. Hana gave the impression that she was caring, friendly and very talented. Riley could tell that Hana didn’t like to ‘show off’ about all her secret talents but she really needed to. This woman was amazing. An inspiration. She wasn’t stereotyped as the normal kind of noble. Hana began to whisper to Riley explaining who everyone was- she was grateful for this as Maxwell must have forgotten to do this when he rushed off.

“So what do you think of the masquerade ball so far?”

“It’s wonderful.”

“I can tell you are going to enjoy yourself. To be honest, I’m glad Maxwell introduced us. It’s very refreshing to be around someone who’s excited.”

“Fancy Gala’s are just second nature to you?”

“When you’ve gone to as many as I have, they can lose their charm. Unless, of course you find the right companions, please excuse me Lady Riley there’s someone I need to greet. Catch up with you later?”

Riley felt anxious being left on her own, just then someone tapped her on her shoulder making her jump- nearly knocking the sparkling champagne out of her hand.

“Oh my god, Liam. You scared me!”

“Sorry Lady Riley. You look absolutely breathtaking. I’m glad you arrived safely. I’d like to introduce you to someone. This is Duchess Olivia Nevrakis.”

Olivia glared up and down Riley’s body. She felt intimidated by the commoner who had unexpectedly turned up to court.

“Nice to meet you, Duchess Olivia.”

Liam nudged Olivia as she didn’t respond, his baby blues pleading with her jade green eyes to be polite back.

“You too, Lady Riley.” She replied forcing a fake smile. When Liam called Riley ‘breathtaking’ jealousy hit the Duchess. Liam had promised that he would make her his Queen, Olivia believed she would definitely win the competition and that Liam would keep to his word. Lady Hana seemed too sensitive to be Queen, Lady Kiara was an intelligent woman who was multilingual but she seemed more career minded- and then there was Lady Penelope who talked about her poodles non-stop, with this Olivia believed Penny also wouldn’t cope with being Queen. But after meeting Riley she was having second thoughts. She had the perfect body, beautiful natural brown curls, a smile that lit up the room. Would Liam stray? Paranoia occurred in the Duchess’s mind.

Liam kissed Riley on her hand, before whispering to her that Drake was over at the bar. Riley focused the gaze towards the man she loved and ambled over in his direction. Drake noticed a woman entering his space, he provided a nod and gave a stiff bow. He really wasn’t interested in these courtly manners- but felt the need to force it for Liam’s sake.

“Good evening, my lady.”

Riley bit her lip, trying to prevent herself from laughing. This was the first time she had witnessed Drake having such polite manners.

“I didn’t know you had manners.” Riley said smirking- he wasn’t the Drake Walker she knew.

“Ri-Riley? Is that you?” Disbelieved, he must have had to much whiskey he thought to himself.

“Yeah. Didn’t you recognise the lady you apparently love?” Riley placed a comforting hand on her lover, before he abruptly brushed her away. Her bottom lip began to tremble- why is he being like that?

“What the fuck are you doing here? You can’t be here!”

“What do you think I’m doing here? Liam asked me to come, to be with you Drake. But I have to be part of his social season. Maxwell is sponsoring me.”

“Go home now!”

“Why are you being like this? I thought you would be pleased!”

“Pleased to see you - yes! Pleased you are part of a social season -no! You don’t understand how vicious this court is! Go home, Brooks!”

“It’s so vicious but you’re still here, if it was that bad you wouldn’t stay. I did this for you. I’m still jetlagged and I abandoned New York for you. You know what, fuck you Drake!”

“Riley! I came back to pack and was coming back to New York tomorrow- to be with you. Riley!”

Riley didn’t hear him as she stormed off wiping away her tears- she was regretting this move already. Drake noticed Hana try to comfort her, Maxwell joined the two ladies and attempted to help too. Frowning towards Drake, Max shook his head. Not even 24hours of being here and Drake had already made her cry. Drake’s heart was telling him to run over to her, but his head told him otherwise.

“Liam, a word outside. NOW!”

The Life of Captain Marvel - prologue

Sooooo, yep, we’re doing this.

I’m going to recap this travesty of a comic issue by issue, but before we dig into the many crimes of The Life of Captain Marvel, I thought it would be helpful to lay down some context.

Margaret Stohl’s miniseries radically reimagines Carol’s origin and family, in particular her parents, Joe and Marie Danvers. So let’s take a look at who they were before Stohl took a hacksaw to them.

Joe and Marie Danvers are first introduced in Ms Marvel vol. 1 #13 (1978) by Chris Claremont and Jim Mooney.

Some background for this: In the 70s, cape comics were increasingly delving into social issues not only as story fodder, but as a selling point. Successes like the 1970 Green Lantern/Green Arrow (which explored addiction, racism, income inequality and corruption) and The Amazing Spider-Man’s 1971 “Green Goblin Reborn!” (which famously abandoned the Comics Code in order to portray the negative impact of drug abuse) prompted more comics to address relevant social issues of the day (with… varying degrees of sensitivity, shall we say).

The Ms Marvel comic, which launched in 1977, was heavily coloured by (a white male comic writer’s interpretation of) the women’s liberation movement. It’s flagged right there in the title: as both a civilian and in her superhero alter ego, Carol Danvers refuses to be defined by her marital status, insisting on being called ‘Ms’ rather than ‘Miss’.

“And one thing more, Jonah… My name is Ms. Carol Danvers.”

When we first meet Carol in issue #1, she’s introduced as a smart, driven career woman and a proud feminist who is hired by J. Jonah Jameson as editor of the Bugle’s Woman magazine (an allusion to the feminist Ms magazine). In the space of a page, she’s talked the penny-pinching Jonah into paying her a high salary, while refusing to cave to his insistence that she prioritise diets and recipes over interviews and stories about women’s issues and activities.

To what extent the 1970s Ms Marvel succeeds as a feminist hero is debatable. What’s important here is that Carol is framed from the get-go as a hero who fights against misogyny as well as the usual parade of supervillains.

So obviously her dad was going to be a male chauvinist.

Carol: Dad, it’ll take more than words to stop Plumm. You need evidence. I’m a journalist — a trained investigator. If the building’s unsafe, I can help you prove it. I can get— Joe: Outta here, Kitten, an’ leave a man t’ do a man’s work in peace.

But Chris Claremont, to his credit, gave the character and the relationship a little more nuance than that.

“Joe Danvers. Five-nine and two hundred pounds of muscle, a man who’s worked his entire life with his hands, who started with nothing and built a successful contracting business until the recession of ’76 kicked it in the teeth.”

We first meet Joe at work on a construction site. The high-rise project has been plagued with problems, thanks to what we’ll later discover is deliberate sabotage by the site owner, and now one of Joe’s crew is trapped dangling from a fallen steel pylon several storeys above. Joe rushes to the man’s aid.

Man: Joe, what’re ya doin’?! Joe: Whaddaya think?! He’s one o’ my crew— I’m goin’ out after him!

With his courage and quick thinking, Joe saves the man’s life.

Andy: I’m scared, Joe. My God, am I gonna die?!? Joe: Not if I can help it. Just hang loose, Andy, and trust me!

Joe begins to suspect that the owner is cutting corners at the expense of workers’ safety. Investigating after hours, he discovers the whole site is at risk of structural collapse. Furious, he calls the owner, who first denies it and then tries to threaten Joe into silence. Joe refuses to be cowed.

Plumm: We’re within the building codes. Joe: Bull! Plumm: I warn you, Danvers— push me too far and I’ll make you live to regret it. Joe: Stick it in yer ear, punk! You’re finished, Plumm — ‘cause I’m blowin’ the whistle on you an this pitiful excuse for a buildin’!

Throughout, Claremont takes the time to illustrate the commonalities between Carol and her father. They’re both people of courage and conviction, with nerves of steel. They also share a stubbornness and a temper that doesn’t always do either of them any favours.

And, yeah, Joe is a sexist jerk.

When Carol offers her journalistic skills and connections to help expose Plumm, Joe dismisses her. And when Ms Marvel ultimately saves Joe’s life, he grumbles about her interfering. The idea that he might need a woman’s help to do a ‘man’s work’ is utterly demeaning in his mind.

In later issues, we learn that the reason Carol joined the military in the first place was because it was the only way she could afford to pay for college after Joe flatly refuses to help her out, saying it’s more important for her brother Steve to get an education and “besides, you don’t need college to find a good husband”.

So Carol joins the Air Force, makes her own way, builds her dream career and becomes a hero on her own terms. Yet no matter how high she flies, it never seems to be enough for Joe. He doesn’t understand what she wants from life, she doesn’t meet his expectations for what a daughter or a young woman ought to be, and for that Carol feels she’s never been able to gain his approval or acceptance.

“All I ever wanted was for Dad to accept me as I am, not as he wanted me to be. And now I know that no matter what I do, or how well I do it— he never will.”

Marie, unfortunately, gets short shrift in Claremont’s Ms Marvel. We see that she’s supportive and proud of Carol, buying every issue of Carol’s magazine and enthusiastically recommending it to all of her friends. We see that, unlike Joe, Marie sees Carol for who she is and loves her for it. And she’s not fooled for a second by the Ms Marvel costume.

“I gave birth to you, Carol. I raised you. I love you. I’d know my first-born anywhere, behind any disguise.”

But unlike Joe, we never get a sense of who she is as a character or what kind of relationship she has with Carol. Indeed, for the most part she’s just there to mediate Carol’s relationship with Joe, making excuses for her husband, downplaying the hurt he’s caused Carol and encouraging Carol not to let his misogyny bother her. Which is a problem in itself.

Carol’s backstory got a light revamp for the modern era in 2008’s Ms Marvel vol. 2 #31.

In this version of events, Joe is less overtly misogynistic. He doesn’t outright refuse to help Carol with college or suggest that she ought to be looking for a husband… but those sexist assumptions are still hanging around beneath the surface and he never truly accepts Carol, unable to reconcile her wants and ambitions with his ideas of what a daughter should be.

“The things I did… and this was before I had super-powers… I saved the world a few times, Dad. Would that make you proud? I don’t think it would. I wasn’t Steven, was I? I wasn’t Joe Junior with his architecture degree. And I wasn’t your perfect little boy in a Red Sox fan [sic]. I was just the little girl you were always uncomfortable with… never knew how to talk to.”

The breaking point in their relationship, and the impetus for Carol to join the Air Force, comes with the death of her (older, in this version) brother Steven, who dies overseas in military service.

Unable to cope with his grief, Joe starts drinking to numb his feelings with alcohol, developing a serious drinking problem (this retcon was a nod to Ms Marvel’s own battle with alcoholism, which had been explored in a number of comics at this point).

And seventeen-year-old Carol looks around her, seeing a father near-catatonic with grief and booze and a mother struggling to keep the family afloat on her single salary, and she concludes that if she wants to go to college and become an astronaut then she’s going to have to rely on her own resources. So the moment she turns eighteen, she joins the Air Force.

And her father explodes.

“Why, after what happened to Steven, why would you even want— are you @#$%ing insane?!”

He’s still consumed by the death of his son, and now his daughter is putting her own life on the line in pursuit of a dream he has never understood or taken seriously. He’s terrified and angry and convinced she’s doing it just to spite him.

And no matter how high she flies, she’ll never measure up to his idealised memories of the child he lost. His approval is always out of reach.

Meanwhile, once again, Marie gets shafted. She’s absent in the flashbacks and a one-dimensional figure in the present day, giving no sense of her personality or her relationship with Carol.

There’s one more version of Carol’s backstory, and it comes -- curiously enough -- from Margaret Stohl’s previous run on Mighty Captain Marvel in 2017.

Joe: Ah, Bean... Since my tour of duty ended, things have been tight. College tuition... [...] I can pay one tuition, Bean. For Stevie. Joe has my hands, he can frame houses with me. Carol: That’s not fair! What about me? What am I supposed to do? Joe: Find yourself a nice boy -- heck, a nice astronaut -- and settle down.

Essentially it’s a modernisation of the original Claremont version. Joe Danvers is a loving father who wants the best for all of his children. But what he sees as best is shaped by his sexist preconceptions — a college degree is more essential for Steve, who he assumes will be supporting a family, than Carol, who’ll be raising one — and a complete failure to understand his daughter and how deep her ambitions run. What she feels in her bones as a calling, he sees as a cute obsession that she’ll outgrow, once she’s settled down with the right man. And that hurts. “It’s a lonely thing,” Carol reflects, “when the people who love you don’t know who you are”.

This is the kind of nuance which Stohl utterly abandons in The Life of Captain Marvel.

So, common to all of these versions of Carol’s background is

a fraught, complex relationship with a hard-headed father who’s never understood her and whose approval is always beyond Carol’s grasp, and

a vaguely domestic mother with no defined personality beyond a desire to keep the peace between Carol and Joe.

By the end of The Life of Captain Marvel, this will be transformed into

an irredeemably toxic and traumatising relationship with a verbally and physically abusive father who blames Carol for gatecrashing his illicit romance with his mysterious sexy space girlfriend, aka Carol’s mother; and

a vaguely domestic mother (from space) with no defined personality beyond a desire to keep the peace between Carol and Joe.

Buckle up, kids. This is going to be a shitshow from start to finish.

books i read summer 2018!

so, here’s all of the books that i read over the time of like, end of may to august, including my star rating as well as a short synopsis and a brief little paragraph about what i thought about it while i watch comedians in cars getting coffee. don’t read my reviews if you don’t want ANY spoilers. the reviews aren’t spoilery, it just has some hints to the end and such.

i. the hate u give by angie thomas

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

the hate u give is about a young african american girl named starr who is present when her childhood best friend is tragically murdered in an unwarranted act of police brutality, and how she finds her voice and the strength to speak out about the matter of police brutality with the support of her family and friends, as well as finding out who her real supporters are.

i adored this book with every last bit of my heart. the characters are absolutely hysterical, as well as strong and inspiring. i even loved starr’s stereotypical white boyfriend (who is being played by KJ Apa in the film adaption coming out this year and i literally yelled). i loved the way the book incorporated social media and such without making it seem as if teenagers are simply media obsessed. it really showed many different perspectives and sides to arguments that make you think, as well as inspire you to stand up for something you believe in.

ii. emergency contact by mary h.k choi

emergency contact follows two college students who are seemingly lost in life, dealing with issues in their respective lives, who meet under strange and awkward circumstances, and take a liking to one another and start a friendship that consists almost entirely of text messages as they help one another through their woes of life, and develop feelings for one another cause yanno its a YA romance.

i didn’t NOT enjoy this book, but it wasn’t my favorite. i found penny’s character kind of annoying, and really rude sometimes, and i didn’t really love her dynamic with any of the characters, including sam who is the guy she is texting throughout the book. i really liked how realistic it was, kind of giving a real look into how life works i guess? i thought sam’s storyline with his ex girlfriend was incredibly dramatic and unneeded and it frustrated me, and the end of the story literally wasn’t affected at all by that storyline, it was just not needed. at all. like the ending was like cute and sam was cool but it was just kinda not as good as everyone online said it was. if it would’ve ended differently it would’ve gotten two stars lol.

iii. every day by david levithan

every day is the story of a genderless character that goes by the name of a, who jumps around from body to body every day into the life of somebody else, but they meet a girl, rhiannon, while in someone else’s life and they fall in love with her, and they then spend every day finding ways back to her

that was real hard to explain okay, but i really, really enjoyed this book. i found some aspects a little repetitive and it took some time to get to the point, but it was such a sweet story, and i loved getting to know each of the characters that a used as a host, and i enjoyed figuring out which characters that i liked more. i also liked the slight thrill of the kid who is trying to get a caught, as well as the ‘reverend’ who has the same condition as a, but learns to control it. i usually don’t like an open ending, but i liked this one since it implies a goes away to find out how to control himself and get back to rhiannon. overall i enjoyed it, and it was fun to read and get to know the characters, but i gained nothing from reading it because the ending was open and it felt like there was no actual point. i don’t know it was good.

iv. play me backwards by adam selzer

play me backwards is a really freaking weird story about the misadventures of leon who finds out his childhood girlfriend is possibly going to come visit, and is pushed down a rabbit hole of weird tasks he is sent to do by his best friend stan, who apparently is actually satan, such as finding the white grape slushee, date a popular girl, and listen to the full audio book of moby dick, all the while spending almost all of his time at the run down ice cream shop he works at. honestly that’s the best i can do the book is super freaking strange?

the weird thing about this book is that i actually really enjoyed reading it, and i actually really liked the character of leon, but i genuinely had no idea what the hell was going on the entire time. he was just kind of running around, like messing around with his girlfriend he didn’t like, thinking about some british girl, and being a lowkey satanist. like i have no idea what the point was, i honestly don’t even know what it was about. leon was a relatable character and he was funny, and i enjoyed his point of view, but the book was bad. the idea sucked and i felt like i was wasting my time reading it. but i had a fictional crush on leon and the ending like kinda forced itself into having a point, even though it was a stretch, so two stars only for leon. but i liked it. i don’t know.

v. eliza and her monsters by francesca zappia

★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

eliza and her monsters is about a young girl, eliza, who writes/draws a world renound web comic, monstrous sea, but remains completely anonymous except to her three best online friends and her family, but then she befriends the new student at school, wallace, and she finds out he is that he is the most popular fanfiction writer for her webcomic, she finds it harder and harder to keep her secret as she falls in love.

so i read this book in ONE NIGHT. it was really good, and never failed to entertain me. i couldn’t blame eliza for falling in love with wallace cause girl i did too. he was such a cute character and so were her internet friends, and so were all the characters and i loved reading all of the little snipits of the webcomic, it was just adorable, and their love was adorable, and it was just adorable. plus it really puts a nice look on mental illness, and im not talking about eliza, wallace had extreme anxiety and it was very real and i really appreciated it. took away a star because eliza pissed me off on multiple occasions and i found her annoying a lot. other than that rEally great.

vi. i’ll give you the sun by jandy nelson

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

i’ll give you the sun is told from the perspective of twins noah and jude during two very separate periods of time in their lives, jude telling her story at age sixteen and noah at age thirteen, as they go through life, and falling in love, and family secrets and tragedies as the grow apart and back together.

okay so i didn’t know how to explain this without spoiling it completely, but WOW i loved this book. i genuinely couldn’t decide if i liked noah or jude’s story better, and finally decided on the answer being BOTH. it was so good, so emotional, noah and brian made me sob and so did jude and oliver, and i loved the characters and all the revelations they had and im just rambling and i feel like im making no sense but jesus, this book was amazing and the story was just so absolutely amazing. not a single flaw in this book. absolutely amazing OH ! MY ? GOD! absolute favorite of the summer.

vii. the absolutely true diary of a part time indian by sherman alexie

★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

the absolutely true diary of a part time indian is the critically acclaimed novel about a teenage boy, junior, who had many medical issues who lives in an indian reservation, but decides that he is destined for greater things and decides to transfer to the “white school”, and he faces many challenges such as finding his place at this school and the backlash of the other members of the reservation.

it was very difficult for me to like this book, at first because of the fact that i read it for school, but then ONLY for the fact that i found out about the sexual assault charges against the author, and im so upset i bought the book and essentially supported the author before i was aware olf that, but that doesn’t change that i had to read this for school, and that i actually liked it. it was very aware of racism and a lot of racial stereotypes and provided very raw experiences and the drawings were fun to read. i don’t really wanna go on cause i don’t wanna praise it too much, but i took away a star cause sometimes i found it repetitive and some things simply didn’t have a point, but i liked it.

viii. a semi-definitive list of worst nightmares by krystal sutherland

this book tells the odd story of esther solar, who believes her whole family is cursed by Death, and whatever fear that cripples them throughout life will kill them. but the curse is threatening the life of her twin brother, eugene, she decides to face every fear she has written down on her list of things she must avoid so she never has to face the curse herself, with the help of an unlikely friend, to lure Death to them and reverse the curse.

so that summary probably little to no sense at all. because the book itself is so difficult to explain, but i actually really enjoyed it. it took me a while to read it, but i loved it. esther was a real character, with so many real flaws, and her ‘friend’ jonah who helped her overcome all of her fears, really brought out the best parts of her, as well as bringing light to the nature of abuse. the book dealt with a lot of real problems, such as mental illness, and does it in such a lovely and sensitive way, but without holding back, as well as showing someone who seemingly had no hope, get better, which i find amazing. the only reason i took a star away was because so many parts dragged on and i got bored sometimes, but overall, it was a great read with so many great characters and it was very whimsical and enjoyable!

ix. crazy rich asians by kevin kwan

★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

crazy rich asians follows rachel chu and her boyfriend nick young as he brings her home to his ‘crazy rich’ family that he hasn’t prepared her for at all, and essentially don’t approve of her, as well as it follows everyone in nick’s extended and immediate family as well as some family friends and their extravagant lifestyles as well as all the drama that comes with being that freaking rich.

okay i adore this book. it was absolutely amazing, and i could barely begin to tell you all of the amazing characters and storylines, each one more interesting and intricate and extravagant than the next. i loved the representation, and accurate representation at that, of the asian culture. it was just great. other than being somewhat hard to follow at times with the constant perspective change, i loved it. the movie was rlly good too lol.

x. the kissing booth by beth reekles

★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

the kissing booth is the absolutely dreadful story of a young girl, elle evans, and her best friend, lee flynn, as they plan a kissing booth for their high schools fundraiser (for what? i have no clue) and elle ends up kissing her best friends older brother, noah flynn, and by a strange turn of events they fall into a forbidden (because lee makes the rules ig) romance.

really ended off the summer GREAT with this one! it sucked, it was horrible. there were actual, typos? in the book? it was incredibly sexist, literally making elle seem like a piece of property, and theres MULTIPLE occasions of sexual assault that is glossed over. in fact, the best friend lee assaults her (slapping her butt without permission) and when someone ELSE assaults her he says “no one is allowed to do that but me” thats reason ENOUGH. it’s gross how they both try and control her, and its honestly just bad. the story is all over the place, and it feels like a wattpad book, because it literally is, and i payed six dollars for it. so the jokes on me ig.
