Feel free to ignore, but what do you think would change if Adrien was a girl with optional boy Marinette? (Trans or cis, your preference)

Let's make them both trans just for fun! I'll use the typical gender swap names of Marin and Adrienne. (Also, slight warning: I'm half-asleep and also dumb, so I might accidentally use their Canon names/genders. I'm not trying to be an asshole I'm just dumb and tired)

So both transitioned pre-series. However. There's differences on who knows.

Marin: Other than his parents, its mostly old friends like Nino and Kim remember Marin pre-transition. They still sometimes call him "Nette"/"Nettie" as a nickname, but Marin doesn't mind because it doesn't immediately out him. Rose and Juleka also know because Juleka and Marin both got trans vibes off each other and came out to one another. Other than that, most of the class only remembers Marin as a boy and he doesn't feel the need to tell everyone outright. Some people guess because Marin is very LGBT+ involved, so they know he's somewhere in that.

As for Adrienne, she's unfortunately out to everyone because the Agrestes are well known. Adrienne made her modeling debut modeling boys clothes, but after coming out to her parents she was switched to modeling female clothes(because Gabriel might be a fuck but at least he's not a transphobe!). It was kind of a big PR thing when it happened, and she still sometimes gets misgendered in magazines, but that's what the lawyers are for! As I said though, Adrienne doesn't have quite as much privacy on who she can tell because of that. Though the class doesn't immediately know because they weren't paying attention to the Agrestes before meeting Adrienne, they do find out through articles about her now that they're paying attention.

Onto some changes, let's start with Chloé! She still sees Adrienne as her best friend/almost sibling, and is very protective/possessive of her. But it doesn't come across as a romantic crush because Chloé can't use Adrienne as a "let me pretend I'm straight" crush. She will fight anyone who misgenders Adrienne though. The fact that Chloé can be friends with someone as sweet and kind as Adrienne without any 'crush' to explain her interest gets people looking at her in a new light. Like a "huh. Maybe she's not a total bitch?", and everyone decides to subtly work with her/give her a chance to be nicer.

Marin still befriends Alya in Origins but doesn't come out to her immediately. Adrienne also befriends Nino too.

Marin also still develops a crush on Adrienne. While he didn't pay attention to Agreste Family Drama before, he is aware that Adrienne is trans so that's not an issue in his anxieties.

On the flip side: Ladynoir. Or Lordnoire.

Lordbug and Chat Noire are Paris's Heroes. And they're dynamic is pretty much the same, except Chat Noire is less open in her flirting at the beginning.

The reason for that is because she doesn't know if Lordbug will like her if he finds out she's trans, so she doesn't quite get her hopes up until later. Because Chat Noire tells Marin during a "Marichat Moment", so next "Lordnoire" moment, Lordbug drops a "btw I'm trans" into the conversation.

So a lot of the plots don't change. But some of the crush drama does. Let's start:

Nathaniel in Evilustrator: Nath still has a crush on Marin. Chloé doesn't tease the crush as much in this version because she might be a bitch but outing someone like that is a line she doesn't cross. Nathaniel kind of ends up outing himself because Evilustrator takes Marin on the date and everyone connects those dots.

Nino in Animan: Nino still has a crush on Marin but is having more of a LGBT-related debate within himself. He's like "I have a crush on Marin, which should mean I'm not straight because he is a guy. But as he is my first guy crush will he see it as me being not-straight or will he think I'm still straight but not accepting him? And even worse, is that what I'm subconsciously doing???" By the end, DJWifi still happens and Nino can tell Marin "so I'm not straight and I did have a crush on you but also I now have a crush on Alya and we're dating!". The power of being locked in a panther cage.

Théo in Copycat: Because he's straight, Théo's crush is on Chat Noire instead. She rejects him for several reasons, the biggest being that she's in love with Lordbug. Théo ends up as a Copybug instead, jealous that Lordbug has captured the heart of his crush. Lordbug thinks it was because he didn't come to the statue thing, but after he's defeated he apologizes to Chat Noire about how he reacted to her rejection. Lordbug'a just standing there like "wait, if you were upset she rejected you, why'd you turn into fake me???". Chat Noire helps dodge that by pointing out that they're about to detransform.

Kagami: I'm debating on this. Tbh I want to set it up for my usual polyship as endgame, but That's not the debate. The debate is whether Kagami has a crush on Adrienne and the "oh no I'm gay!" Panic, or Kagami gets the crush on Marin first. Either way, she ends up having a friendship with Marin earlier.

Luka: while I could switch the crushes like I did with Kagami, Luka initially interacts with Marin more than Adrienne. Polyship is endgame like usual, but it's lining up as more of a Mariharem. On the other hand, Adrienne might have a closer friendship to Juleka because transgirl solidarity, which would give Adrienne an excuse to be over more and in the process get to known Luka more too.

Now for the real fun plot: Lila.

Because of Lila's manipulative nature, I wouldn't put it past her to pretend to be gay to get the money/power that would come with seducing Adrienne. Especially because while she would pretend to be accepting, she wouldn't see Adrienne as a 'girl'.

However, let's have a twist in the AU and point out that Lila has other options for her 'meal ticket'. After all, everyone in every salt fic has pointed out how Canon!Mari has the same connections that Lila attempts to lie about!

So, Lila decides to try seducing Marin instead. She doesn't know that Marin is trans and that'll be an issue later but for now it's her plan.

Marin still clocks Lila as a liar because while Lila did enough research to avoid telling lies Marin can easily disprove(like the Jagged's cat one), she still did the 'Lordbug's my bff!' Thing. He gives the half-truth to Lila of "Lordbug was upset you would lie about him and is looking for you to tell you to stop".

Volpina happens as in Canon. Except her Illusion at the Eiffel Tower is Marin instead of Adrien. Though the book plot is slightly different. Marin saw Adrienne with the book, Tikki said "we need to get that!", so Marin managed to start a conversation to try and borrow it. Lila stole it because Marin was interested. Marin does manage to get it back and that goes the same.

Lila then disappears for Season 2, so let's jump to her return in Season 3.

As Marin is her target, she tries to get someone else sent to the back. It ends up being Adrienne, because she's nice even if she thinks Lila's a liar(she can't tell anyone "I know she's a liar because I'm Chat Noire"), and offered to give up her seat for someone who needs it for a disability.(and she was actually asked instead of shoved back there without her input).

Marin tries to call Lila out, but he has less proof than in Canon. As I said, since seducing Marin with lies was Lila's plan, she avoided lies he could disprove. So even without the "jealousy", it's easy to write Marin off as just overly paranoid.

Still, Marin refuses to sit by Lila, and instead goes to the back with Adrienne because she looks lonely. Which pisses Lila off.

Later, Lila decides to threaten both Marin and Adrienne. Though separately, of course.

She tells Marin that she already has his friends under her spell, and it would be so easy to turn them against him if he didn't comply. Not to mention that it'd be hard to convince them that he's not interested. After all, as far as they know, Lila is such a sweet and wonderful girl! She's their friend! Even if Marin is into someone else, why would he be so upset about someone like Lila showing interest?

Marin believes in his friends. But he still panics at the threat.

With Adrienne, Lila tries to play nicer because she thinks that she can manipulate her. Lila plays the "I don't want to let a boy get between us", already planning on painting Adrienne as jealous. When Adrienne tries the nicer "I know you're lying but I think you're doing it because you want friends and I'll be your friend if you stop lying. Also what was that about a boy coming between us because idk what you're talking about?!".

Lila lied and told Adrien she'd try, but of course has no intention of doing that.

The Akuma fight goes about the same.

Afterward, Adrienne talks to Marin about her conversation with Lila. Marin is a little more confident in telling Adrienne about Lila's threats. Adrienne is pissed, and tries to stand up for Marin, but is brushed off because Lila already painted her as jealous.

So neither are believed. For Marin, they believe his suspicions of Lila are tunnel vision of his crush on Adrienne combined with insecurity of "if someone likes me it must be for ulterior motives". Meanwhile, everyone knows that Adrienne likes Marin but is denying it with 'he's just a friend!', and think she's jealous of Lila's interest.

How the turntables.

This would change other Lila-centric episodes like Oni-chan and Ladybug, but I'm too tired to deal with that rn.

[picard through 1.6: my disjointed feelings vs. my disjointed thoughts]

I guess the tl;dr is that I love (most of) the characters, and I do not trust the writing? which, fine, par for the course, especially as a Voyager person, but still. I’m enjoying it! I don’t think it’s actually good! I keep having feelings! I am really confused about what they’re doing in re Picard the Character! anyway!

the positive (give or take):

LARIS <3 <3 <3 my Picard’s my Romulan wife! traumatized and her whole world is gone and ex-Tal Shiar (!) and Irish and sweater-wearing and honestly Star Trek: Laris is the show I want in the world.

I’m this.close to changing my user icon thingy to Laris. I mean I love Caroline and her wine but what if. (the main reason I haven’t yet is because what if they kill her off for more Picard manpain and I’m too angry about it, etc. like I said: I do not trust the writing/writers/whatever, especially with Duff on the staff.)

honestly, there are so many stories one could tell about Laris and Zhaban and home and rebuilding and loss and spies and family and you know what, I don’t trust the writers at this point, so maybe I’m the tiniest bit relieved they’re not telling it (but, oh, for writers who COULD)

Romulan secret names? sure, I can accept that. plenty of cultures have family versus public names, etc. Romulan secret names they only tell their lovers? eh, no, that’s a myth they sent out to the universe for a laugh / to see who believes it / because they could.

Romulan Warrior Nuns. the entire concept. all of them. absolute candor. swords. give me more.

give me Laris formerly of the Tal Zhiar and members of the Qowat Milat having an awkward meal together I am just saying.

relatedly, Elnor needs a cat.

continuing trauma because of course! (and look I love Janeway but I do cringe at the way “humanity” was thrust upon Seven in a very limited and forced way and that can’t have been great for her longterm and give me more Seven learning that she is “human” enough there’s no one definition but also she’s fucked up and that’s okay too except where it’s self-destructive and not okay and)

although seriously they tiptoed riiiiiight up to the line of confirmed queerness and then swayed a bit and hope that was enough and it’s not? (I wonder if they were so paranoid about Kill Your Gays-itis and what it would mean for Seven to kill an ex that they didn’t want to skirt that fallout, but come on.) (I also wonder if, when Seven comes back, they actually go there or if this is as far as it will go.)

Raffi deserves better. Better writing, better writing, better writing.

the negative (give or take):

the casual racism problem.

stop killing characters of color! if you colorblind cast and then only/largely people of color die that’s not good! not to mention Indiana Picard (see next point) and the Romulans of color all swarming around him and yeah. stop it.

don’t dress Picard up like a colonialist unless you actually mean it—like, if you want to get into the issues with the Federation and colonialism rah rah flags and all that, do it, but I just feel like they’re not actually going there (too much emphasis on conspiracies and people infiltrating the Federation rather than, oh, maybe the Federation itself is an issue?).

this is where my trust of the writing really comes into play because I just don’t know that they know what they’re doing.

the writing can be pretty clunky. why did they make someone with basically no tv experience the showrunner again? (it turns out that maybe television and novels are different media! with different rules and etceteras!)

no really why is this show being made in 2020 so straight (and so 1990s coy about any hints of queerness)

I don’t care about Narek. At all. He bores me.

this is obviously a personal thing, as I’ve definitely seen people out there who enjoy him. but yeah. he does nothing for me personally.

and his sister is just. cartoon villainry.

if you’re going to keep intercutting to scenes with the bad guy and his sister sexually choking him and all either actually explain the reason they’re doing all the bad stuff and actual justifications, etc. (we don’t need it to be a surprise to be interesting, yo! why do you care about the android homeworld or whatever it is you’re searching for? have you shared your secret lover names with each other yet or naw?) or just don’t. the baddies should be their own heroes!

I would definitely prefer the story about how the Federation and Starfleet aren’t what their PR says they are and digging into how flawed they are and colonialism and all that to the one about the conspiracy and infiltrations into the Federation and Starfleet that sort of just skim over the parts where whatever the conspiracy managed to do depended on the flaws in the Federation and Starfleet.

look, maybe we’ll get it? but, again, trust issues with the writing.

I really, really, really wish they hadn’t gone the addict route with Raffi

it feels a little lazy? very plug-and-play characterization? idk! I think she’d be more interesting without it!

(also to be fair I have my own issues with addiction stuff in general so even if I trusted it to be done well and all that it still wouldn’t be my favorite.)

is there any trauma care in the future utopia times (the Borg Reclamation Project seems to suggest that there may be at least, on some level, an attempt at it)? has Picard received any mental health care at all post-living-on-a-ship with Troi who sometimes tried but also maybe was too much of a friend to be an effective therapist for him no really what is the status of mental healthcare in the future utopia times I want to know.

(I mean the PTSD stuff makes sense, I’m not denying that and that’s not the stuff I find myself disliking in the character. but it does lead me to wonder about the state of mental healthcare and the like, not because I think he should be “cured” or anything like that, but because I wonder.)

Is Picard meant to be an asshole I no longer like?

is the bit with the doctor who is not Beverly telling him about his brain whatever issue meant to be a hint that he’s going senile or something? is that why the worst parts of his nature keep being thrust front and center?

do the writers know how unlikeable he can be in this? is that the point? is there a point to it? do they have any idea at all what they’re doing? (giving alcohol to the addict so she’ll do what you want, Picard? really?)

in conclusion: I just don’t know what they’re trying to do in re Picard the Character on Picard the Series and I worry that the people in charge don’t know either. (also, I want to continue liking Picard the Character so.)

anyway I left out a bunch here (I largely like the crew of the La Sirena but also don’t have anything I really want to say about them) (my eh-reaction to Narek has affected how much I really care about that storyline, but I do in fact like Soji and hope for more interesting stuff for her because I was really bored with her adventures in sleeping with a bad guy) (anyway this is already very long, but yeah, hopefully the rest of the season will return some level in faith in the writings having a Plan but I’m not super confident in that oh well).

More Crissmyglitz Wedding Guest Angst: part 2

OMG they won’t let it go. Crissmyglitz-Guest Gate. The ccers are still obsessing over the #CrissMyGlitz guest list. As I pointed out in my first post (X), every single photo posted in round one of Crissmyglitz-Guest Gate was taken while Darren was working. That’s right, every single photo the tinhatters presented as “Darren and a real friend” was taken at work. For a fandom who constantly remind the world they are astute and ALWAYS PAYING ATTENTION TO DETAILS, it was a supermassiveblackhole.

In part 1 they presented Elvis (X), Alan Cummings (X), Jenna Ushkowitz (X), Laura Osnes (X). In part 2 they added Jane Lynch, Matt Bomer, Matt Morrison, Kevin McHale, Lena Hall, Ricky Martin and Edgar Ramirez. Idk what was worse, that they didn’t learn any lessons after part 1 or that the fandom egged them on in utter delight.

This is the LAMEST shade ever thrown and they were eating it up. Abby spent her Sunday adding to the nonsense and trying out sarcasm. She brought up the algorithm nonsense again and I can’t stop shaking my head. The fact that it’s easier for them to believe that someone wrote an algorithm to determine the guest list for Darren and Mia’s wedding rather than simply to acknowledge that they don’t really know Darren at all is absurd. Rational people would see Darren’s guest list and realize that they got it all wrong. Rationale people don’t see wedding photos and spend 7+ months proclaiming it’s all fake because he clearly is much better friends with former coworkers, Edgar Ramirez and Lena Hall than he is with Jennifer Coolidge and Pamela Aldon based entirely on the fact that nobody posted social media pics with Jennifer or Pamela.

(No, actually I don’t because that is nonsense. Darren flipped someone off from stage? Right because that is such professional. You believe that perfect, well-mannered Darren Criss would flip off his fiancee while working? That’s very inappropriate behavior during working hours, especially in front of a big audience of people- each with a cellphone. It’s also very risky to flip off the woman he is engaged to- the cc secret might get out. If Darren is terrified to come out and terrified to breach THE Contract, why would he risk if all just give Mia the bird? Giving someone the bird is hardly a satisfying diss for anyone over the age of 12).

leka-1998: When the difference in chemistry is undeniable even in pics that show nothing but hands, that’s probably an issue.

(I have never in my 51 years heard someone claim a married couple had no chemistry as evidenced by their hands in a photo taken specifically to show off their nail polish or that a PR photo for a Broadway show showed more chemistry than the actual couple. I mean seriously?)

(I will give this one to them as as personal photo )

(Is “hand chemistry” a thing? I’m only speculating here but is the degree of hand chemistry a function of the depth finger-penetration-on-finger-penetration? Cuz.....that would make total sense amiright?)

(I can’t with this entire post. She wasn’t invited because he kissed Lena on stage as per the script? Oh wait- no- she was not invited because he kissed Lena on stage and he flipped off Mia (how they know he is flipping off Mia is anyone’s guess. I like to imagine he is flipping off the tinhatters). But wait- is he actually flipping off anyone? No, no he actually isn’t because that would be terribly unprofessional. Darren is at work and his bosses would not appreciate him flipping off anyone the audience. No actor who wants a career is going to flip off someone in the audience while just-fingers crossed- hoping the message is received by the intended person and not a critic or investor.).

2. EDGAR RAMIREZ

(I am not sure about this pic. Darren posted it on his Instagram and Edgar responded “love you brother”- that’s sweet and all but what does it prove- nada. I am sure they really had a great time together filming ACS and felt close, but they haven’t maintained that relationship-at least not publicly -since they end of awards season. I’ll give the tinhatters half a point for this one- but bear in mind- I’m being generous because it looks like a PR pic)

(PR for ACS. This is hilarious....so Edgar is doing a red carpet interview and Darren walks by him and Edgar walks away with Darren. OKAAAYYY-what does this prove? Again, they are at a work event- so far all the pics with Edgar are from work events except maybe 1)

(PR for ACS- photoshoot. While the sentiment is sweet, Edgar hashtagged it #ACS and #Emmys. OMG how much ccproof do you need to understand that this is PR? ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION? Me think not cuz he freakin’ tagged it for you and you still don’t understand that it was promotion for the Emmy. He-lar-E-ous!)

(Ohhh ho ho ho sooo funny. It’s so funny I forgot to laugh...har har har aha Since Jennifer, Ben and Pamela actually got invites to the wedding, it is clear that they are indeed close to Darren or Mia, soooo the joke doesn’t actually work. As for Edgar being his closest friend because he called him “brother” during a big ACS promotion push-I’m not feeling it. What is so baffling to this “stupid stan” is how the tinhaters CAN’T SEE the details right in front of their faces. The Darren-Edgar love-fest was hot and heavy during the promotion of ACS and then it stopped all together...THAT is the definition of PR. I am sure they actually did like each other during the production of ACS, but when the project ended they both moved on to other projects and other friends. I’ve had coworkers -and I’m sure many of you have too-that I adored and I never wanted lose the connection we shared while working together but alas, the romance fizzled after we no longer had the workplace in common. Obsessing about the meaning of the almost-2-year-old photo of 2 strangers is pretty silly)

(Seriously? There are what- 2 or 3 photos that aren’t definitively traced to work This game isn’t working out the way the posse believes it is. This is however, THE definition of confirmation bias clouding their judgment).

3. KEVIN MCHALE

ajw720:Poor KM didn’t make the cut either. Perhaps his invite was eliminated by the weird algorithm for tagging d at his 30th right below c, yet d not pictured? He clearly considers d a good friend as he invited him to the party.

(Did Kevin suggest he was devastated to miss the destination wedding of his former coworker? Kevin and Darren went out with their former-Glee castmates maybe once or twice in the last four years- they are hardly besties. I don’t remember Kevin and Darren as being particularly close while Glee was in production. They are literally former coworkers.)

(Kevin inviting Darren to his birthday party doesn’t indicate that he “clearly considers d a good friend”. It seems like I remember the party was a surprise party?)

It's been YEARS since Claire and Cas last communicated. And I'm thirsty AF for their interactions. I'm curious as to where they stand now regarding their view of each other. I mean, we get a lot of Dean-Claire and the kind of adoptive parent-child relation is established already through that, but what about Cas? (I'm sounding like Dean and the whole fandom)

Yeah, one of the nice things about all the PR is that they keep saying they really want Cas to go hang with the Wayward Sisters some time maybe, and Claire would be a good reason to do it so it’s not at all weird he might go.

I also would love to see more interaction but I can see WHY the show has kept Cas away from Claire to focus on other storylines because in his limited story time unless she has a direct reason to be involved with him, they don’t tend to just stick him in fluff episodes where the moment is only a passing nice thing that happens and not part of the bigger narrative. Which is sort of annoying but I understand…

If he came to hang for an episode in Wayward Sisters it really would be Cas’s Day Off and the sort of stuff we don’t get when we see him in the main show and it’s all main story stuff, and it can be something positive to fill his time between SPN episodes, or whatever, and he can just come for on his side nothing but emotional reasons of wanting to see Claire and Claire will be the POV focus and the reason it all happens, and Cas will be serving HER main arc instead which means we can get him entirely for character reasons and bonus development on his side (though nothing I assume which would break SPN canon if you didn’t watch WS and vice versa), which is not really something he gets to have in the main story unless it’s specifically what they’re telling for another reason. Since he can’t have an integrated personal arc in Wayward Sisters, it would ONLY be for the sake of the cameo and playing around having him come over for tea and help with a hunt and bemusedly become best friends with Donna :P

I think at the moment Jack is sort of the same spot as Claire was - another person for Cas to emotionally nurture, should he get the chance, and for Cas’s sake for showing/expanding on his emotional range and this weird life stage he’s at, giving him family ties, especially one that’s also already firmly chosen Earth and the Winchesters as his family over the angels, making Cas’s space there even clearer once again, just as Claire was a lesser but important tie to Earth and a representation of Humanity that wasn’t Dean, but was more than just passing moments of healing babies. Obviously Jack doesn’t represent that, but they’re not exploring that same side of Cas right now as they covered it in season 10.

I think a lot of fandom wank about things not getting shown is because the writers feel they have already covered it and it’s established canon and unless they can come up with another reason to go back to a character, setting, prop, whatever, that’s substantially different, they can’t retread ground… It’s a problem that we sometimes want things to become a changed status quo that the writers only used as a passing plot point… Claire’s personal development has been from her POV and not about Cas since the end of 10x20 where she clearly makes her peace and goes her own way, and for Cas he’s left in a place where he can only build socially with her or help her when she’s in trouble, but they never came up with another hook to put them in the same room… One failing is that they don’t show more regular contact, even in passing things like showing Claire among Cas’s phone contacts or vice versa, or comments and references during her episodes, even if it’s just asking after him. They showed her with grumpy cat to show Cas still meant something to her, and show her framed with the Gas n Sip sign watching over her, but don’t see a point in explaining again in the text how Cas is connected to her, because we already know.

Also I think we immediately draw much closer bonds and ties between characters than they actually have, and Cas did have a quasi-parental role with Claire, but between having her actual father’s face and the damage he did to her family, peace with him and a sense of understanding Cas and accepting him as her guardian angel without getting into a stronger relationship immediately makes sense, especially as he has her father’s face and it’s super weird, and I think in some ways his presence is appreciated but not necessary for her - she understands Cas is good, and that he will be there for her when she needs him, but as much as we love fluffy family headcanons and putting all the family together, she doesn’t doesn’t have a strong a positive emotional connection to him as she managed to make with even Dean in 10x20, as he’s still got less baggage than Cas does to her, and becomes inspirational for her to decide in a single episode she might want to be a hunter in the future.

So… Idk, I’d love to see Cas and Claire hang out again and for them to get closer, but for plot and character reasons I don’t like but can see why the show keeps them separate (although I wish there were at least smaller connections), I think Wayward Sisters is the way we get to see them together again, and it can give them the room to hang out that we just need to see Cas *having* this in his life, which will be a huge lovely positive thing, while for whatever it does for Claire, will be more her story and for her show :D

now that the finale afterglow has faded, i’ve been kind of looking back on the series with a more critical eye than a “PLS DONT LEAVE ME” eye.

this is by no means the last time i’ll write some kind of long-winded essay, i’m sure i’ll find other things to overthink about on rewatches and as i write more fic, but it is a direct reaction to the finale and the five years i have spent with this show.

in short, the finale was amazing. it was probably the best finale of any show i have ever seen. it was satisfying and true to the characters that we had grown to love. it was realistic insofar that the problems didn’t end with the evil being defeated. it was bittersweet and made me emotional where i didn’t think the show could anymore.

(although i still haven’t watched the last two episodes of frin/ge so it’s rank may change).

if the rest of the season and the previous two seasons had set it up, it would have been even better. it is, to this day, my firm opinion that season 1 was the tightest, most well thought out season of television i have ever seen. like, if you had asked me in season 3 where i thought the finale would be, i would have had such a different answer. (please do ask me, i have so many thoughts.)

most of my criticisms are on the co-phine/delphine front bc that’s where i’ve curated the most facts, having a few transcripts saved to my computer for ease of access. and the first thing i have to talk about is the plot holes this season, bc wow, so many. like, delphine was only there when it was convenient. that much was clear.

like she only helped siobhan bc there needed to be a good guy survivor to tell the rest about what happened. she was only invited to the big house so cosima could invite herself along. she was only put in the dress so that cosima could be in the suit so that the pr team could tease a wedding.

and she was only in the final clone scene to reinforce that ‘’we can trust her now guys’’. like she and cosima never talked about anything. not the shay snafu in season 3, not the lying, not the spying, not the secrets. which are really big things. and i’m not saying it had to be 45 minutes of therapy jargon but i am saying that they should’ve said... ‘sorry’ or explained what happened and where they were coming from. bc to this day i don’t actually know why delphine did what she did in season 3. what happened in frankfurt? why did she threaten shay like that instead of just asking? why was she suddenly working for topside? none of that ever gets mentioned after it happens.

and as much as the sarah hug helps me with my sarcoshayphine struggles, they hadn’t spoken since ‘piss off delphine.’ how did they get from there to hugging? ‘we’re doing all of this on account of bloody delphine?’ to soft hugs and kind words? like yeah, it fit and it worked and it was touching. but when you think about it, it kind of dissolves. which is kinda fitting for a lot of the plot this season.

and to me, that left this season of c0p/hine feeling kind of empty. we reused the ‘can we trust delphine’ plot. we reused the ‘delphine’s off in a foreign country and therefore unreachable’ plot (eighty times this season, right?). i still stand by my point that in season 4 she could have been in hiding, having driven off into the sunset to do mrs. s’s bidding. like they could’ve had delphine funneling info for all of season 4 through mk/siobhan completely off screen. but she just.. did nothing for all of season 4. right. boss ass bitch corporate delphine just... sat around getting told what to do... sure..

or in 5x09 she could have just been around the corner at the grocery store rather than france. and why even bring that up if you’re never going to do anything with it? she went home right when cosima would’ve needed her and she was free to be there for her? what the hell? and there was no setup for it either. one second they’re ‘on the precipice of doing anything they want’ and the next delphine went home? without cosima before the fight is over? like, season 2 delphine would’ve been doing The Most: cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, chores, snuggles, etc etc. but instead she hears the news and hops on the first plane out of the country?

like you guys do realize they didn’t say ‘i love you’ this season at all, right? delphine is ‘motivated by love’ but she doesn’t say it at every possible opportunity? cosima thought she was dead, but doesn’t blurt it out the first time she sees her after waking up? like fuck a sex scene, normalize wlw couples saying ‘i love you’ to each other first.

idk... i know there were scheduling conflicts and i know they had to keep rewriting as the schedule got rearranged, but come on. i can, right now, change a few key scenes that do something for both cosima and delphine’s character, that keeps them both active and doesn’t just ignore 3 seasons of characterization.

which is another point. there was so much they could have done with delphine’s character. not just this season, but for a while. instead of like.. idk following up on the threads they presented (affair with l**kie, changing sides, the girl who slit her wrists which was implied to be delphine herself, seeming to be worth shooting and kidnapping and nursing to back to health to neolution, what she was doing before cosima got there, what she did in geneva, etc etc) they only brought her back to kiss cosima. like bottom line. like, she didn’t really do anything active that someone else wasn’t doing elsewhere except warn siobhan about kira. which they didn’t even listen to her about.

and several times they referred to her as a lesbian when in 1x08 she clearly and fully called herself bisexual. and they shot her. for being in love with cosima. regardless of what they have recently said about ‘knowing about byg and always intending to bring her back’ they... still did it. and right afterwards said some really gross stuff about fans who were upset about it. i don’t really remember all of it, but i do distinctly remember the word ‘reductive’ used to say that fans were reducing her to her sexuality and that was the real problem. which... see the above several paragraphs. pot, kettle. kettle, pot. (i have separate thoughts on the season 3 debacle..)

which brings me to my main thought. i think they were too hyperaware of the fandom. they tried to roll with the scheduling conflicts and make a nice new shiny ship for us. but when there were complaints (*cough* hate *cough*) thrown at creators/cast over it they waffled and changed their minds. which then led to a shay shaped plot hole. also a shay shaped hole in my heart.

and i think someone around season 1 told them they were being progressive and they just... didn’t try to learn new things? idk how to phrase this. like season 1 was genuinely feminist. and the fact that they saw this story unfolding from a female perspective was incredible. and sarah’s storyline throughout the seasons was incredibly feminist. and the fact that they thought to include characters of genders other than cis and sexualities other than straight was fantastic. but after they got a pat on the back for being progressive, they stopped actively trying to call themselves out. they were like, ‘yes i am progressive and feminist therefore everything i produce is good without a second check.’

but this past season was all about petey and the clones were only used to further reinforce his evilness. and felix was more active than sarah, the protagonist. and tony actually got mentioned but he never actually showed up. and their ‘stand-in for the patriarchy’ got to violently murder two women (of two different underrepresented minorities, ASD and middle aged) while going back and abusing another woman (and praising him and saying he actually loved her!!!!). and their lesbian character centric episode was primarily focused on her romantic entanglements rather than, say, her and her character. (which i’ve been learning is actually kind of a problem in the wlw community, is losing yourself to new relationship energy and they could’ve actually taken a stance on this and said something important, but... anyway..)

and the creators were touting this as the most feminist season ever.

like okay. by walking0 de..ad and game- of9 thro///nes standards it is. but what they said in interviews and what they put on the screen did not match up. and i think that’s my main problem. like when i turn on my tv i generally turn off my feminism eyes and my lgbt rep wants. bc i generally know that not every show is going to be perfect and as long as it’s not like last man standing then i can tolerate it. but season 1 and their interview presence just got my hopes up. and they just didn’t deliver on their promises, imo.

and that wouldn’t be so bad, but they were so close, like this close!! you can’t see my fingers rn, but they’re almost touching... like they had the perfect setup, a meatball straight down the plate, just begging to be a home run, but they shanked it to right field and got stopped at second base.

like implying in interviews that some characters are nonbinary or confirming characters sexualities is really cool!!! i used to be a r//izzl//es fan, i know how awful it is when cast/creators genuinely don’t want you in their fandom. getting a confirmation is super cool.... but technically it’s not canon, it’s not In The Show. like it’s not untrue either, it’s not not canon. but being Progressive and Feminist and Positive LGBT Rep would’ve been.. idk saying it on the show, in the character’s own words? bc i can go anywhere and get coded representation, i can go back to the fifties and watch stuff with thinly veiled metaphors and small little nudges in the confirmation direction. it’s not something you get to pat yourself on the back for.

like, imo 1x08 was probably the best handled lgbt scene. like delphine stated her identity. and cosima just went along with it. and they got to talk candidly about it. they said ‘gay’ and ‘bisexual’ in the same scene. like??!!?!??!?! that was amazing. but for some reason they couldn’t do that for sarah, or felix. or let tony talk about being trans rather than having it be a hushed whispered conversation between two (then believed to be) cis people without him.

and it was just so frustrating to me, as a viewer, knowing what they meant and seeing what they put out there.

bc they are two different things. i can say whatever i want about this post, but at the end of the day it is just a grammatically incorrect, rambling, walk-about way of saying i have insomnia and was thinking about this enough to try and organize my thoughts. the creators can say whatever they want about the show, but eventually those interviews and those panels will get buried in the internet and all that will stand is their product. which doesn’t have confirmations of those themes within it.

like i’m forever going to love the show and i’m always going to go back and rewatch. it’s always going to be an influence on my writing. it’s just not... me trying to replicate and be like this show it’s trying not to make the same mistakes. which is kinda sad, bc it used to be the other way.

and at the end of the day it is feminist. like it’s about women told from a women’s perspective about allegories for womens’ issues. it’s just not by women so it missed the mark. same goes for the lgbt stuff. it is progressive that they thought to include it, but the stories they ended up telling were closer to the older stuff than what they thought.

i just wish they had brought in a third showrunner that was a woman and had lgbt writers come in to tell the lgbt stories. that doesn’t mean that it would’ve automatically been 100% Unproblematic™ but i think it would have been a lot closer to what they had promised.

anyway, i miss it already.

Im a destiel fan who hates Jack. Jack being equated with Dean to Cas disguts me (as does Jack all together or the whole incest sam and dean daddy storyline) , so if anybody should be mentioned after Dean re: Cas it should be Sam , his friend of a decade and not Jack satans manchild writers pet fanservice crack fic trope. Lmao I laughed at this myself I dont think there is hope for me with my hatred against Jack he could marry deancas and I still would want him to drop dead

But Jack has done basically nothing? I mean now he’s another bland white guy to add to the cast but at this point we’re just going to have to lump it on that issue if we’re committed to carrying on watching since he’s already cast and a series regular and what do we do with that…

I mean… Do you just hate the fan spec about him?? Or what he did as an unborn baby and all the drama about him and Kelly because the Buckleming episodes were so dreary for a large chunk of the season? I mean I TOTALLY get being indifferent to him because I really don’t know how I’ll feel about him until I get to enjoy him on screen but I’m hoping I’ll like him so the season is easy to watch… I don’t hate him even if the concept hasn’t exactly been grabbing me, because I still consider myself in the pre-opinion stage on Jack because we know basically nothing about the actual character except some spoilers here and there? If the actor has a ton of fun charm and sells the character then I’m all for it. I didn’t really like Amara for the first half of season 11 but Emily Swallow was great so when they just let her be Amara and ditched the kid stuff I came to quite like her because she had great presence and made me believe in the character, while the parade of little girls and teenagers was… not great.

But anyway, sorry I think you’re completely misunderstanding Dabb. I mean I answered that question thinking you were a Sam/Cas shipper with a generic Dean n Cas are buddies answer but it’s the same answer I think explains anything PR-y because they are not going to talk about Dean n Cas as if they are a romantic couple in the PR because they’re not selling it that way. I mean I’d love it if Dabb came out to give a paragraph to Dean’s reaction with a wink wink of course he acts different, but it me it’s great he mentioned Dean and Jack as having a strong bond with Cas and just forgets Sam because it’s in dropping Sam that it points out - PLATONICALLY as this is how he’s talking about it - Dean has an immensely powerful relationship with Cas. And Jack has one too for different reasons, in the same way Amara sprung up latched onto Dean, Jack and Cas have a connection which is sudden and ambiguous.

OF COURSE Dabb isn’t talking about either of these as a romantic bond or comparing them against each other as if they are. It says nothing about Jack and Cas to compare it about Cas and Dean in the context of words coming out of the showrunner’s mouth in a short teasing interview for a website where he says like 3 paragraphs intended to get a general audience worked up about watching the next season. This is why we say “PR is not showrunning” because these interviews do not reflect exactly the purpose or intent of the writers because they’re selling a party line on what it all means in the broadest possible way which sounds best… Any analysing we do on these words is reading between the lines with our extra knowledge to guess at it, but it’s all deeply, deeply… surface level and trite. There’s noooothing to worry about here.

I mean, I don’t know, I’m still waiting to see if I like Jack or not but the point is that Dabb was just laying out some emotional directions for the story there, suggesting what dynamics are going to be interesting for us maybe. You don’t like Jack, so whatever he says about Jack isn’t for you, fair enough… But he’s not devaluing Sam and Cas or whatever in that omission. He’s trying to sell the new character to people who don’t have a strong opinion or need reminding the show is coming back and to check it out when it does. Saying Cas and Dean have a strong relationship is a given, and Jack and Cas are connected already in the story based on how the end of last season went down, so it’s natural to mention that too. Sam and Cas are close but that’s a given and apparently not a direction the story needs to focus on since last season they weren’t building up anything dramatic…

I mean, idk what to say still even now I get it but that maybe you need to stop taking Dabb at his word that everything he says is of utmost carved in stone importance about the show and character dynamics and this indicates literally everything he feels about the characters, and how season 13 will play out. He’s just giving an interview to try and get people excited about things.
