Iced Matcha Lattes from Home vs. a Cafe

I love caffeine. It keeps me energized, and it tastes delicious in drinks like matcha lattes. However, it can get pricey when I buy a matcha latte from a cafe every day of the week.

A typical iced matcha latte with oat milk from a cafe can cost about $6. We will use Starbucks as the cafe sample and say it costs $6 to make it simpler.

Let’s say I have a set budget of $42 to spend on iced matcha lattes per week. If I spent my entire budget on cafe-made matcha lattes, I would only be able to buy 7 cups per week. Let’s say I work 12 hours a week at $15 an hour; I would make about $180 per week without taxes. As a full-time college student with only a part-time minimum-wage job, buying an iced matcha latte from a cafe every day of the week would take a chunk out of my budget.

The recipe for an iced matcha latte calls for 12 oz of milk, 0.5 oz matcha powder, 0.5 oz of sweetener, and 4 oz of ice. A roughly 16 fluid oz iced matcha latte would cost $1.62.

If I spent my entire budget on homemade matcha lattes, I could buy roughly 25 cups of iced matcha lattes per week. That is more than 3 times the amount we could buy from the cafe.

If we put the quantity of cafe-made matcha lattes on the vertical axis and the amount of matcha homemade lattes on the horizontal axis, the graph would look like this:

Fact-Checking 6 Claims at Senate Democrats’ Voting Law Hearing

Senate Democrats took their push to nullify state election laws on the road Monday, holding a “field hearing” in Atlanta to attack Georgia’s recent election reforms and promote their bill to eliminate voter ID and other requirements.

Only Democrat members of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee showed up to question witnesses, also all Democrats.

Committee Chairwoman Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said Republicans had the opportunity to call a witness to defend the Georgia law, but didn’t request one. A spokesperson for the committee’s ranking member, Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., didn’t respond Monday to The Daily Signal’s emails and phone inquiries on this point.

The hearing, held at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, included numerous assertions, some true, but others debunked in previous fact checks.

Here’s a look at six big claims from the hearing in Atlanta, which Democrats titled “Protecting the Vote.”

1. ‘Hurdles’ to Ballot Drop Boxes

Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., isn’t a member of the Rules and Administration Committee, but was the first witness in his home state. Warnock, who took office in January, criticized Georgia’s election reform law for “reducing the number of drop boxes where voters can return those ballots.”

Klobuchar jumped in later to say, “If you’re looking for evil, you can find it pretty easily” in the Georgia law.

“Drop-off boxes cannot stay open beyond the time of the early voting,” Klobuchar said, adding, “Some of these voters were working day and night, several jobs, then they can’t go to a drop-off box.”

The fact is that ballot drop boxes weren’t used in Georgia nor in most other states before the 2020 election, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Georgia election officials provided drop boxes to collect voters’ ballots based on Gov. Brian Kemp’s emergency order to address voting concerns during the pandemic.

But for Senate Bill 202, passed by Georgia lawmakers, officials wouldn’t have to provide drop boxes in future elections. That said, fewer drop boxes will be available as those elections presumably take place without a pandemic.

Also, the new law restricts voting by drop box to hours when early in-person voting is available.

Each county in Georgia must provide at least one drop box under the law. But boxes will have to be located near early-voting sites and be accessible for dropping off absentee ballots when those polling locations are open.

2. ‘Big Lie’

Democrat senators and witnesses argued that the law in Georgia and other election reforms across the United States were prompted by former President Donald Trump’s claim that his election loss in November to President Joe Biden was fraudulent.

“We saw record-breaking voter turnout in our last elections—participation that should have been celebrated—get attacked by craven politicians, and, spurred on by the big lie, these same actors are now rolling back voting rights in a way that is unprecedented in size and scope since the Jim Crow era,” Warnock said.

Biden beat Trump by about 12,000 votes out of 4.9 million cast, according to official final results, to win Georgia’s 16 electoral votes.

Georgia state Rep. Bill Mitchell, a Democrat and president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, called the November election a major success.

“I define its success not by our candidates’ winning their elections, but by the fact that when you have as many people vote as we did in the 2020 election cycle, with as few problems, with all challenges being dismissed—you have to consider that to be successful,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell later said “The Heritage Foundation and others” were pushing election reform legislation.

The Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative think tank, is the parent organization of The Daily Signal.

“When you have the highest levels of voter participation, combined with the lowest levels of challenges, why would you want to change that?” Mitchell said.

However, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week reported that digital ballot images show that Fulton County election officials scanned about 200 ballots two times in the November election. Skeptics of the election results argue that apparent double counting is evidence of a need for a closer examination of ballots in Georgia.

The newspaper noted that the discovery was unlikely to change the election results in Georgia. But some conservative commentators, such as Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson, expressed concern about the finding.

The duplication of at least 200 ballots is evidence of problems with tallying votes in Georgia, but far from proof that the state’s election results were affected in Biden’s favor.

3. ‘Adequate Polling Locations’

One of the more compelling witnesses was neither a lawmaker nor an activist, but a voter named Jose Segarra. The Air Force veteran told his story of waiting in line for hours.

“I, along with thousands of Georgians, had to wait for hours in order to cast my vote in the 2020 general election,” he said.

“Our government needs to ensure that we have adequate systems and processes in place to allow every eligible voter to cast their ballot without such undue burdens,” Segarra said without specifying federal or state government, adding:

To do this, we need to have an adequate number of polling locations and these locations to be properly resourced and open for as expansive a period as possible. Voters should have the opportunity to vote on Saturdays and Sundays. Lots of people work on Saturdays, so Sundays need to be an option. It would also make it much easier for some people to vote if Election Day were a federal holiday.

Georgia’s new election law does provide “additional voting equipment or poll workers to precincts containing more than 2,000 electors.”

The law added early voting on two Saturdays and one Sunday that previously were not available to Georgians, stating:

Requiring two Saturday voting days and two optional Sunday voting days will dramatically increase the total voting hours for voters across the state of Georgia, and all electors in Georgia will have access to multiple opportunities to vote in person on the weekend for the first time.

Under the new law, counties in Georgia have flexibility to open early voting for as long as from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at minimum.

Previously, some rural counties didn’t provide for early voting for eight hours on a workday, The Washington Post reported.

Thus, the law actually expanded hours for early voting.

4. ‘Mass Challenges’

Warnock announced new legislation he is co-sponsoring with fellow Senate Democrats Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Mark Warner of Virginia, and Jon Ossoff of Georgia. Ossoff, like Warnock, took office in January after defeating a Republican incumbent in a special election.

The legislation, called the Preventing Election Subversion Act, seeks to prevent the overturning of elections based on mass challenges or by legislators controlling the makeup of a state board of elections.

The proposal is tied directly to provisions that Warnock said are in SB 202, the basis of Georgia’s new law.

Warnock said Georgia’s law would let “a single person make unlimited, mass challenges to the ability of other Georgians to vote, clearing the way for baseless accusations.”

The language of the law does make it more difficult for government officials to outright dismiss a complaint about election procedures and ballots. Specifically, it says:

Any elector [voter] of a county or municipality may challenge the qualifications of any person applying to register to vote in the county or municipality and may challenge the qualifications of any elector of the county or municipality whose name appears on the list of electors. Such challenges shall be in writing and shall specify distinctly the grounds of the challenge.

There shall not be a limit on the number of persons whose qualifications such elector may challenge. Upon such challenge being filed with the [local] board of registrars, the registrars shall set a hearing on such challenge within ten business days after serving notice of the challenge.

As another justification for his legislation, Warnock argued that Georgia’s new law “allows partisan officials in the state Legislature to control our state board of elections and take over local election administrators, and it allows them to engage in these takeovers even as the votes are still being cast.”

The Associated Press reported in March that under the new law, the Legislature does indeed have an increased role in the State Election Board, but it can’t overturn elections at a whim, as Warnock seemed to suggest.

Georgia’s elected secretary of state has a diminished role in elections under the new law. This is the basis for Democrats’ claim that partisan politics could play a role.

“The secretary of state will no longer chair the State Election Board, becoming instead a non-voting ex-officio member,” Georgia Public Broadcasting explained in a report. “The new chair would be nonpartisan but appointed by a majority of the state House and Senate. The chair would not be allowed to have been a candidate, participate in a political party organization or campaign or [have] made campaign contributions for two years prior to being appointed.”

5. ‘Rushed Through’

Georgia state Sen. Sally Harrell, D-Dunwoody, said the Republican-sponsored law lacked adequate input from Democrats in the state Legislature.

“Election bills were rushed through without public input and voted out along party lines,” Harrell said. “Questions addressed to bill authors by minority members were frequently answered dishonestly and disrespectfully. … In the nine years, I have served in the [Georgia] General Assembly, I have never seen such blatant disregard for the legislative process as I did with the passage of SB 202.”

Previous media reporting shows the legislation moved quickly through the Legislature to Kemp’s desk. Questioning this speed has been a consistent line among critics, including the U.S. Justice Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clarke, who is leading the federal lawsuit against Georgia’s voting law, has said the bill was “a rushed process that departed from normal practice and procedure.”

“The version of the bill that passed the state Senate … was three pages long,” Clarke said in June during a press conference announcing the litigation. “Days later, the bill ballooned into over 90 pages in the House. The House held less than two hours of floor debate on the newly inflated SB 202 before Gov. Kemp signed it into law the same day.”

6. Water Bottles, Ballot Harvesting

Warnock also complained that Georgia’s election law is “making it harder for community organizations to assist voters, whether from requesting a ballot to just handing out a bottle of water.”

The law prohibits campaign workers from distributing food, drink, or anything else of value to waiting voters, and from setting up a table within 150 feet of the building or 25 feet of a voter.

However, the law specifically allows official poll workers, as opposed to campaign workers, to provide water to voters.

As for the “community organizations” Warnock cited, the law prohibits ballot harvesting, a controversial practice in which political operatives obtain large numbers of ballots from election officials and then deliver the ballots to those officials once they’ve been voted.

The practice has been used to achieve fraud in several elections, among them a North Carolina congressional race later overturned in court and a Texas mayor’s race that led to multiple indictments.

Why Voter ID Equals Voter Suppression

This was written by a close friend from her own personal experience. --------------------------------------------- Oh hey. Someone's tweet just reminded me of something. #voterID #VoterSuppression My mom's 70-something. She's been married to my dad, a retired Army warrant officer, for 50+ years. She's had numerous jobs, been overseas several times, had a driver's license since she was 16.

She's volunteered at the VA medical facility, worked at the polling stations every election (big & small) for about a decade, has had numerous bank accounts, credit cards, loans, mortgages, etc. Her current driver's license (exp 2022) doesn't have the "Real ID" marker on it.

She has a friend whose son is pretty high up in the DMV; he assured her she could do it all online. She's not internet savvy, so I got her info & tried to do it. Everything said she was eligible to renew/update her DL online, but when I tried to finalize it, it was rejected.

So I took a day off of work one day and went with her to the DMV to find out what's going on. Except we couldn't find out, because the DMV isn't letting anyone in, not even to ask a question, unless they have an appointment. You have to schedule the appointment online.

Remember, my mom's not tech-savvy. She can do a few things, but not a lot, and between her own innate irritability and the stresses of caring for my dad, she simply doesn't have the patience for it. So I went online to schedule the appointment. Except I couldn't.

They only book two weeks out at a time; all the available appointments were filled. The website said to try again on such-and-such a day, so I did. Same thing. All booked up. I took some more time away from my own work to go with her to talk to the lady turning people away.

We asked if we were doing something wrong. No, she said, it's just really hard to get an appointment right now. Try logging on at like 12:01AM on the next available day. My mom's usually sweet to other people, but on occasion she can talk to them the way she talks to me lol.

It's very effective, and the lady whose job it was to turn people away agreed to go inside and pull some strings and got my mom and appointment for three weeks away. By now we've been trying to get her a new driver's license for about two months.

The lady tells us we have to bring her birth certificate to prove that she's a US citizen. My mom scoffs and says they've never needed that before. Well, they need it now. Three weeks later there's a bit of a panic when we can't find her birth certificate.

She insists on trying to get my dad to help her look for it, despite the fact that he has raging dementia. He goes through all the folders in a file cabinet three times and swears it's not there, while she tears up the rest of the house. I've taken another day away from work.

I tell them to leave and get something to eat, and I'll look for it. I don't think my dad actually knows what he's looking for. He and she both insist that if it was in that cabinet, he would have found it. "Humor me," I say. They leave to go get lunch.

They walk out the door, I open the file cabinet, and look at some manila envelopes right in the middle. I pick one up. Printed on the front of it in ~36-point font is 'BIRTH CERTIFICATES' followed by the names of everyone in our family. I call my mom and tell her to relax.

We get to the DMV a half hour ahead of time. I check in online - another thing that my mom couldn't figure out how to do - and then I go stand in line while she sits with my dad in the car. The Go-Away lady comes out, confirms our appointment, then asks for the birth cert.

I hand it over. She looks at it and says, "No, her birth CERTIFICATE." I look at the document. She says, "This is a Certification of Birth Registration*. It's not a birth certificate." health.maryland.gov/vsa/Pages/cert… *or something like that

I look at it, puzzled. It says 'birth' and 'certificat-' something; surely that's the same thing. No, she says; this is just a paper saying that the official birth certificate was processed. "This is the only thing she's ever used," I say. "The military, her passports -"

"Does she have a current passport? We can use that." "Well, no, she hasn't needed one for like 30 years. How come all of a sudden this - which has been perfectly fine for her entire life in NUMEROUS states and countries - isn't sufficient?" "They changed the requirements."

The Go-Away lady tells me we'll have to request a certified copy of the BC, and then start the entire process over again. I get a link to a company that processes the requests, but they charge $10 for the BC, and $11.75 for their processing fee.

To hell with that, I think, I'll go directly to the Vital Records people in Maryland. They charge the same thing, because they want you to use the internet company. You can request it by mail, by... wait for it... downloading a form from the internet. health.maryland.gov/vsa/Pages/birt…

So basically you can do it on the internet, or on the internet, and if you don't have access to the internet or don't know how to do stuff like "download a PDF" well, tough noogies for you. But that's what I'm here for. So I go back to the company and fill out all the info.

They're asking for some weird stuff to verify her identity: "Which of these properties is associated with you? A, B, C, D, E, or none of the above?" My mom immediately goes into a panic because those are all strange addresses to her. "Somebody must be using my SSN!"

I try to explain to her that knowing that you've never been at ANY of those places is confirmation as much as knowing you've been at this or that one. She doesn't understand it, and she's almost in tears. I tell her to just trust me, it's fine. We finish that, and move on.

We get to the checkout part and guess what? They don't have an option to just send it regular mail (or not that I could find). Your only "option" for shipping is express mail, for $18+. That brings the total cost to $40-something. And it's going to take 3-4 weeks.

In addition to the ~2 months we've already been waiting. If you add everything all up, by the time we're done it'll probably "cost" ~$500 to get her driver's license renewed. (That's counting my time at my full rate; even if you just count it at minimum wage, it's easily over $150.) And that's just the things we can put a price on - gas, hours away from (my) work, actual costs. It doesn't count the hours staying up until midnight to try to get an appointment or the frustration (for her) of not being able to talk to a human.

It doesn't count the stress she feels hoping my dad's not deciding to walk into traffic or burn the house down, since he's not allowed to come in to the DMV office with her and has to wait outside/at home, or the guilt she feels about relying on me for all this.

And altogether it'll probably take us 4 months minimum to simply renew a driver's license to put a little star on it. (The lack of birth certificate is why she couldn't do it online, btw.) And consider this: My mom's an intelligent, middle-class, white cishet woman.

She has a car, she has internet access (though she doesn't know how to use it), she's fluent in English, she's worked outside the home for decades and, as a former military wife and government employee, understands paperwork and bureaucracy.

She doesn't have a criminal record, she doesn't move around often (or at all), she has perfect credit and plenty of credit cards to pay for things online - she should be the easiest person in the entire damn world to renew a driver's license for. And it was (is) HARD.

Anyone who thinks getting "suitable" ID is a walk in the park needs to pull their head out of their ass. For someone with disabilities, living in poverty, without a permanent address, unfamiliar with bureaucracy, limited access to the internet, someone whose appearance doesn’t match the name on their ID or birth certificate, someone who doesn't have a credit card and pays cash for everything - imagine.

Imagine how fucking hard it would be for a single parent who speaks limited English (and YES, there are plenty of natural-born US citizens who don't speak English), or doesn't have a car. For someone who's not the gender they were assigned at birth. For someone who hasn't had $40 to spare in years. For someone with a learning disability. For thousands of other people. It's bullshit, is what it is. (sorry so long.)

Going Forward From COVID-19

The Road Ahead: After COVID-19 Five weeks in to a pandemic, and the amount we have learned and changed thus far is enough to fill volumes. We have learned about how the human animal reacts when confronted with the very real fear of being locked up for weeks. We have seen shoppers go crazy over basic items the likes of which were taken for granted the week before this all happened. We have seen people struggle with boredom and ennui, to the point of gathering at the playground anyway for an impromptu game of hoops, or the sudden urge to stroll the aisles of Lowe’s just to get out. We have tried to shelter-in-place, but it’s tough. We’ve seen 16 million people (so far) furloughed from jobs. We have started to wonder how many of those jobs will come back once the curtain of disease is lifted. We wonder how many abandoned restaurants and retail shops will litter the landscape down the road. If we are among the lucky, we have worked from home, having realized the offices in which we once congregated are luxury and probably not all that necessary. We have started pondering if there will be school and university this fall like we once knew it, or whether all academic institutions will be virtual. We have taught from home, we have studied from home. We have Zoomed like a boss, held office hours in our pajamas, and typed profound lectures and essays for our students. Like this one. We have cooked with reckless abandon, and more than we did in the previous five years combined. We have baked bread and added the word “artisanal” to our vocabulary. We now know more ways to cook beans than we ever thought imaginable. We have cauliflowered, Brussels sprouted, and squashed to the point that everyone is at least half-vegan now. We have gloved, masked, and covered to the point that no one recognizes us in public. We can visualize six feet now, we know that we shouldn’t reach in over someone else’s shoulder (well, most of us), and we are aware that we should give way on the bike and hike path so we can all safely pass without inhaling another person’s exhaust. We have found the end of Netflix, cleaned out the garage and basement, organized old photos, and alphabetized our closets. We’ve mowed, mulched, and planted (even if we did violate shelter-in-place orders to go to Lowe’s). We’ve clicked “Add To Cart” to the point of getting a blister on our right index finger. We’ve got enough empty boxes around the house now to start a small shipping company. I could wax poetically for many more paragraphs, but suffice it to say that this is only the beginning. Sure, someday the virus will have run its course and we will be free to carry on. But we will emerge into a very different world once more, one unlike we are experiencing right now mid-pandemic, but also unlike the one we left behind in February. If you’ll pardon me while I slip on my crystal ball gazers, here’s what I see in that brave new world post-COVID, and if you look at these through the correct lens, you will see a wellspring of opportunities for savvy businesspersons. What We Will See All buildings will be reimagined so that people can come and ago with little or no physical contact. We’re all going to be germaphobes anyway, so now is the time to start preparing. Entry ways will have optical sensors to automatically open and close doors, or, at minimum, doors will have handles that can be in such a way that does not require people to use their hands. Public restrooms do not need doors at all; instead, they can be designed or reconfigured to have L-shaped doorless entries. This does not solve the problem of doors on the stalls, but it is a move in the right direction. Beverage coolers and freezers will have automated doors as well. The same goes for office doors; there’s no reason we can’t use retina scanners or ID cards that can be scanned or tapped. Companies able to ramp up to this new reality will do well in the future. And don’t get me started on mass transit and airplanes. Those are going to be tough, but precautions can be taken, even if it means having crews disinfect everything on a regular basis. In addition to soft drink and candy machines, as well as cologne and condoms in public restrooms, we will see vending machines for gloves, masks, hand sanitizers, and other disinfectants. While supplies of these will hopefully be better in the future, it is inevitable that people will be caught out in public without one or more of these new survival essentials. Having them available, and, most importantly, knowing that these machines are ubiquitous, will ease fears wherever we may roam. This change does not require any advances in technology, other than machines that do not require any touching, especially if people have a special tool with them at all times for when they have to revert to old-school. Oh, and the mass transit and airplanes I mentioned a minute ago would be well-served by these machines at train and bus stations, as well as airports. Which brings up devices like the CleanKey, being promoted heavily on Facebook and Instagram right now. It is a handy little tool that attaches to your keyring, and functions either as a door puller, or like an iPad stylus to push buttons or sign names. Until contactless payment systems are installed, products like this will serve as an effective bridge.

Better yet, though, would be the proliferation of stores like Amazon Go, the one currently still in west coast prototype that allows people to enter, check-in to an app, and then shop without ever having to touch a thing other than the products they are adding to their basket. Cutting out the payment gateway, whether it be with a clerk or a self-check, will cut down on virus vectors. But until then, though, we will see more stores with self-check options. Yes, I know this means the elimination of many cashier jobs, but who wants to be a cashier these days anyway? Yes, the pay has historically been among the highest in the store, but you are exposed to hundreds of people and their germs every day. Self-check, along with the CleanKey, allows us to take care of ourselves and once again cut down on contacts. Speaking of stores, once the pandemic is over, I surely hope that everyone offering online ordering and curbside pickup has perfected this process. It’s a great idea to order online and pick up the order later, but there has gotten to be such long wait times, as in multiple days, that it is hardly worth it anymore. I am certain that people would happily allow for the potential germs of the order picker in lieu of having to share space and oxygen with dozens or even hundreds of other shoppers. Efforts will no doubt be made to get turnaround times back to a couple of hours instead of early next week. Education will forever be changed. While we in the College of Business have been teaching online since 1997, the same cannot be said of other parts of my university, and certainly at many other schools. Professors and Instructors will have to rethink everything in the future, including how quickly a class could be flipped to online should the need arise. Furthermore, the entire K-12 curriculum will change, since that environment seldom if ever involved online teaching. While the use of Zoom for class meetings is a laudable short-term adaptation, everyone will have to consider how to make everything asynchronous, just as the online pioneers did from Day 1. It defeats the purpose of being online if you have to be somewhere at 11:00am every Monday and Wednesday, even if that was the original class meeting time slot. The pandemic has thrown everyone’s worlds upside-down, and that 11:00 reference point may no longer be viable. Manufacturers and their supply chains will work better in the future to try to avert shortages in the event of panic buying. While it has been widely reported that toilet paper manufacturers have long been running 24/7 at full capacity, that left zero room for any shift in the demand curve. While it is laudable to not have any unused capacity, it is just as unlaudable to be caught unable to respond. The ability to produce and distribute more toilet paper suddenly became as complicated as the Titanic trying to avoid an iceberg, and it shouldn’t be. Shifting gears between consumer and commercial production must be easier in the future. Similarly, supply chains for agricultural crops must be able to turn on a dime. The state of Florida is now reporting massive amounts of vegetables that are either being plowed under or allowed to rot, all because commercial contracts dried up. While there are indeed big differences between foodservice and institutional users on the one hand, and supermarkets on the other, once again rigid thinking has made it impossible for growers and distributors to change gears quickly. Since we’re talking about food, buffets have got to go. They are a pandemic waiting to happen. Think about how careless people have been in the past, at everything from Golden Corral to massive Las Vegas casino buffets. In fact, restaurants in general will have to rethink everything, from sit-down dining to takeaway and drive-through. Everything from filthy-dirty menus to tables wiped with the same nasty rag the bus boy used yesterday needs to be revisited. Gloves and masks for everyone, regardless of whether they work as well we would hope, because they at least instill a little confidence in customers. Every kind of event will have to work through the reality of a pandemically-aware population. From churches to concerts, sports arenas, bars, and anything else that attracts large numbers of people, heightened attention must be paid to allowing participation without putting everyone in peril. It’s going to be tough. I think back to all of the concerts I have attended, from the mosh pits of the 1970s to more sedate seating in my later years, there’s still a lot of humanity all sharing the same space. I will think twice before I go to church or another concert again. New home construction would be wise to include expanded pantries so that people can stockpile their pandemic stash. My 1980-ish house may have a lot of cabinets, but could sure use a walk-in pantry. We will all need a place to inventory toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectants, non-perishable foodstuffs, and more. The pantry will become a very important room in the house, almost as important as the kitchen to which it is attached. Everyone must embrace e-commerce, not just Walmart and Amazon. This means even the smallest of shops, the mom-and-pop stores who for too long have dismissed technology and are now wondering how they can ever survive. If you want to make the sale, you must go where the people are, and I suspect that post-pandemic, more of us than ever before will be online. One somewhat scarier proposition is that contact tracing will become a way of life, whether we like it or not. This means that government bodies, working in partnership with cell phone carriers, will easily be able to track us, our comings and goings, and people with whom we may have come in contact, even strangers. Given that this is an enormous invasion of a privacy we once took for granted, we will have to weigh the benefits of trying to shorten infection vectors with less personal privacy. This is not going to be a fun one, as we are already finding out with some states moving in this direction. But the most important thing we will see from the COVID era is an emphasis on agility and preparation. Many companies have already learned their lesson the hard way. In many regards, we were all caught flat-footed and empty-handed. From PPEs to toilet paper, from inability to process and fulfill online orders for curbside pickup to restaurants too stuck in place to consider converting to takeaway, the survivors will have figure out all of this, and will continue to refine their operations so that they can adapt on a moment’s notice. It’s OK to be a sit-down restaurant with perhaps only a small portion of orders sold to-go, but the ability to pivot on a dime is needed to be able to modify operations quickly to react to a changing environment. The same goes for manufacturers and supply chains. No amount of whining and complaining is going to fix things in the short-run; only those prepared and willing to make major changes now, not in a few years, will continue to stay in business. Five Weeks And All This Yes, this is a lot to process after just five weeks, and the changes confronting businesses in many regards pale compared to the divisions within broader society. People either accept the statistics, warnings, and precautions as gospel, or they defy and deny everything, living their lives as if nothing has happened, and fearful that our liberties are gone and a totalitarian state is imminent. I’ll let the social scientists worry about the people part; my concern is how to prepare future business leaders for the road ahead. Anyone who came to Emmerdale village could see that there was tension between two families. It was always there and it seemed as though that would never change. It didn’t matter how much time had passed since the initial divide, or the fact that the families had become intertwined and there was now a baby Sugden to a Dingle girl. It was an unwritten rule: The Sugden’s and the Dingles never EVER got on.

In fact, they would go as far as to say they were enemies. However, Robert Sugden had done the unthinkable and actually become employed by the Dingle’s, working in their garage. Except, working there didn’t really work out most of the time, especially when Aaron Dingle also worked there, and with him and Robert being the two that ended up working five days a week with each other, there was bound to be some tension and arguments.

It had become a well-known fact throughout the village that Aaron and Robert would more than likely cause hassle with each other. They both loved to get their own way, and, well, that couldn’t happen all the time. They’d never actually had a physical fight before though, the furthest they did was just annoy each other so that the other one would storm off. But recently, Aaron had been struggling mentally, not knowing what was going on in his head at first, but as soon as he worked it out, he became a closed book, not allowing anyone to even attempt to find out.

He was gay.

In reality, he had probably known about it for years, but him being a Dingle meant he was terrified to not only come out, but to admit it to himself first.

He was getting more sensitive as time went on. Robert didn’t see how on edge Aaron was until it was too late. Until after he had annoyed Aaron about a stupid customer. Aaron saw red, he didn’t mean to. But he punched Robert right across the face, his nose instantly bleeding and his eye bruising quickly.

He gasped as soon as he did it, “Shit, I-I’m so sorry!” He practically shouted, running to get some clean tissue to mop up the blood.

Robert was on the floor, his mouth hanging open in pain and his hand under his nose to stop the blood gushing out. “Here.” Aaron said, gently pressing the tissue against his nose, it immediately soaking up the blood.

“It’s fine.” Robert winced out, grabbing some more tissue ready to swap it over.

“No-no, it’s not. I shouldn’t have done it.” Aaron ranted, wiping the blood way from Robert’s face.

Robert chuckled and then winced, obviously not being able to move suddenly without it hurting. “At least it was you and not Cain, eh?” He joked. “Don’t think he would’ve stopped at a bloody nose.”

Jack was furious. Obviously. As well as his anger, he was delighted to now be able to get one over on the Dingle’s. He knew as soon as Robert came home, his nose and eye all bruised and bulging, that Aaron had punched him. He gloated in the pub when he saw Aaron being handcuffed by the police and read his rights, not caring about all the Dingle’s who were glaring at him. He went home later that night, stinking of beer and slurring his words, and Robert was somehow able to make out that Aaron had been arrested.

He had turned up for work in the morning and waited for Aaron to turn up, but he didn’t. Jack had told him again over breakfast that he rang the police and that he saw the young lad being dragged away, but Robert thought he’s be out by now.

Cain glared at him when he started to work on the car that had just come in, both of them working in silence until Robert spoke, “It wasn’t me who rang the police. It was dad. I didn’t tell him to do it and I didn’t even tell him who hit me. I probably deserved the decking anyway.”

Cain just grunted, signing off a contract and telling him he was leaving, and that Aaron would be in within the hour.

He was right, because not even twenty minutes later, Robert heard the crunching of the gravel and looked up to see Aaron walking down the path. “Please tell me you haven’t been charged with anything. I’ll get my dad to retract the statement-I-I’ll say I don’t want to take it any further.” Robert ranted, watching as Aaron sat down in the office chair.

“They let me off. Just explained to them what happened in my head and they said they weren’t gonna caution me.” Aaron said, shrugging his shoulders. “Just annoyed that I won’t get that time back.”

Robert nodded, glad that nothing serious had happened to Aaron. As much as their families didn’t get along, and that idea was passed down to the two of them, Robert had always liked Aaron, and when they got on, they got on really well.

“Why’d you do it then?” Robert asked, passing Aaron a piece of paper for a car they were working on.

Aaron sighed, putting the paper on the nearest desk and leaning back into the chair. “You can’t tell anyone.” He said sternly, waiting for Robert to agree- which he did. “I’m gay.”

Robert gasped in shock, banging his head on the car bonnet and wincing.

“You need to stop injuring yourself, you dick.” Aaron laughed, rolling his eyes.

“Sorry, but I just heard something come out of your mouth that I never thought I’d hear. Excuse me for being shocked!” Robert said sarcastically.

Aaron just shrugged. “I’ve been playing it in my head for months. Always knew there was something different about me and I guess this is it? But that was the reason I lashed out at you- because it was something I had to deal with on my own and I just got wound up about it. I know I shouldn’t have done it but you were there so it was either taking it out on myself or you.”

Robert walked over to him and put his hand on Aaron’s shoulder. “It’s fine. I get it.” He said. “Anyway, if you want to go out to any clubs, I’ll be your wingman.”

Aaron tilted his head back and laughed, throwing some oily gloves at Robert’s back.

Over the next few months, the boys got closer, despite still having the occasional run in with each other, mainly about trivial things. Robert had shocked everyone in that time, by coming out as bisexual. Jack had been enraged, obviously seeing a link between Robert coming out and the amount of time he had spent with ‘that Dingle boy’. He had kicked Robert out of his house, demanding that he could come back when he was straight again, and refused to even be in the same room as him when they were both in the pub or the café. Robert ended up lodging with Aaron, spending the majority of his minimum wage earnings on the rent and the rest on going to gay clubs.

Aaron had come out a month or so after Robert, people genuinely being more shocked by him than by Robert, for some reason or the other. Jack had been even angrier, saying that Robert had corrupted Aaron into thinking the same way as him. He’d been insistent that they were dating, despite both Robert and Aaron saying they aren’t and never have been.

Like most young people on a weekend, Aaron and Robert occasionally went clubbing. Sometimes it was with a couple of other villagers, meaning that had to go to the straight bars to save everyone the embarrassment, but when it was just them they always ended up at one of the big gay clubs in Hotten. Nothing ever happened between the two of them though, despite what people automatically thought.

Robert was pressed up against the bar, Aaron and Adam watching him, unbeknownst to Robert. It was a Friday night, sometime past 11pm and half the younger generation of the village were in the bar- even some 16 and 17 year olds who managed to sneak in with fake ID.

He was chatting to some girl who looked to be a bit older than him. Long curly brown hair cascading down her back, covering the skimpy dress she had on entirely. Aaron rolled his eyes and downed his pint, watching as she put her hands all over Robert’s arms- obviously flirting. Robert smirked at her, saying a lame joke that he repeated to everyone he found even the slightest bit attractive and Aaron watched on, hand clenched tight around his glass.

“Not jealous, are you lad?” Adam asked, grinning and laughing at Aaron’s reactions.

Aaron scoffed, “Of her? Nah. Couldn’t care less who Rob pulled.”

Adam just nodded, clearly disagreeing with Aaron.

He watched as Robert leaned closer to her, before both of them kissed and Robert’s hand landed on her arse, pulling her closer and then whispering something in her ear. She nodded and both of them walked over to the crowded door and Aaron lost sight of them.

Monday morning came about and Robert walked into the garage, coffees in his hands and his overalls already half off and wrapped around his waist. Aaron was bent over looking into an engine, grunting as he fiddled with something. “Coffee for ya.” Robert announced, setting a cup from the café down on a tray. “Adam said you went out again last night.”

Aaron nodded, “Yeah, wanted another night out so I dragged him with me. Not that he complained like.”

“Didn’t think he would.” Robert laughed, taking a sip of his own coffee while flicking through some notes.

“So you got lucky on Friday didn’t you?” Aaron asked, leaning against the bonnet, grabbing his coffee.

Robert snorted, “What, Sierra? No. We kissed and then she left, didn’t even get her number.”

Aaron did a tight smile and nodded, “Gutted.” He joked.

“Eh, not really. She’s fit but not really my type.” He said, shrugging his shoulders. “Did you get off with anyone last night?”

“No.” Aaron said, walking over to the phone, presumably to talk to the owner of the car. “The guy I like wasn’t there.”

Robert nodded, not really listening to what Aaron said and walked down the gravel to speak to a customer who had just drove in. A few moments later, the woman from the car had walked away, handing Robert her keys and leaving it on the driveway.

“What is it?” Aaron shouted over, putting the phone back down.

“Paintwork job. Told her it’ll be done within a couple of hours.” Robert said, throwing Aaron the keys.

They got to work with it, knowing that it would be an easy job and they had nothing else on until another customer came in. Robert thought about his conversation with Aaron, repeating the words over in his head. ‘The guy I like wasn’t there.’ Aaron liked someone?

The woman came back just as they had finished. Aaron took the money from her and handed her keys back, fake smile dropping as soon as she wasn’t in sight. Robert threw the old coffee cups away, grabbing a sandwich that Cain had dropped off for the two of them. “Something bothering you?” He asked Aaron, who had flung his body onto the office chair that hard that the wheels moved him backwards.

“No.” He shrugged, curling his mouth down into his signature look.

“Which usually means yes.” Robert grinned, sitting down on a cabinet. “C’mon, spill.”

Aaron ignored him, rolling his eyes and getting his phone out. “Is this about the guy you like?” Robert asked, making Aaron stop in his tracks, putting his phone back in his pockets.

“No.”

“C’mon! Who is it?” Robert asked, grinning.

Aaron sighed, going to stand up before Robert pushed him back down into the chair.

“Is it Adam?” Robert asked.

“Nope.” Aaron said, rolling his eyes.

“Andy?”

“Nope.”

“Me?” Robert suggested, wiggling his eyebrows flirtatiously.

“No.” Aaron said adamantly, expect his cheeks were now flushed red.

“Which as I said, means yes.” Robert smirked. “You like me?”

Aaron stood up again, this time moving before Robert could touch him. His feet touched the gravel and before he knew, he was halfway down the driveway and heading towards Main Street. Robert chased after him, the gravel underfoot practically jumped away from him every time his feet touched the ground. “Aaron, wait!” He shouted, only a few metres behind him.

Robert’s hands touched Aaron’s bicep and he twisted him around slightly. “You didn’t have to walk away. Come back.” He said softly.

“What’s the point?” Aaron asked, getting ready to walk away again. “You know now, and I’ve ruined our friendship.”

“Just come back.” Robert said again, pulling at Aaron’s arm and nodding back to the garage.

Aaron sat back down on the chair again, this time resting his head against his arm which was bent on the table.

“I’m glad you like me.” Robert said, throwing some paper in the bin. “Because I like you too.”

Aaron’s head jerked up, looking at Robert in shock. “You what?!” He shouted.

Robert scoffed and smirked, shaking his head gently. “I like you too.” He repeated, this time grabbing hold of the chair Aaron was sitting on and dragging it towards him.

Their lips were millimetres apart when Aaron spoke again, “Really?”

Robert shut him up by pressing his lips to Aaron’s, feeling Aaron’s body stand up to make the kiss move comfortable. Robert wrapped his arms around Aaron’s neck, dragging their bodies closer together and deepening the kiss. Aaron moaned as Robert bit down on his bottom lip, opening his mouth and letting Robert put his tongue there, both of them moving together. Aaron’s hands were on Robert’s waist, pushing his blue top up and letting his hands rest on Robert’s warm skin.

A few days later, the two of them were in the Woolpack, Robert’s arm over Aaron shoulders and rubbing his arm up and down as they had a pint together. Aaron nudged Robert’s face, telling him silently to lick the froth away, embarrassed that his own boyfriend let it sit on his top lip for so long.

“Give me a kiss then.” Robert flirted, resisting the urge to get rid of it himself.

Aaron grinned, putting his hand on Robert’s cheek and leaning in, letting his lips touch Robert’s as he took away the mess from Robert’s mouth. It wasn’t anything special, just a longing kiss that didn’t seem to go anywhere. They had shared a lot of kisses like this exact one over the past few days, neither of them taking it any further than just moving their lips in time with one another and grinning in response.

When they pulled away, Robert saw Jack staring right at them, face visibly raging as he stood there watching his son and another Dingle kissing in public.

He stormed over to them, Robert instinctively putting his arms around Aaron again, tighter this time; protecting him almost.

“So the rumours are true.” Jack spat. “You really are gay.”

“Bisexual, Dad.” Robert interrupted.

Jack scoffed, moving closer to Robert’s face. “I don’t care what you are, Sugden’s and Dingle’s don’t mix.”

“With all due respect Jack,” Aaron started, putting his hand on Robert’s thigh, comforting him. “Nobody seems to care anymore. I mean, your Andy got our Debs up the duff, and your son is my boyfriend. It seems to me like we do mix.”

Jack stormed off, raging at the idea of Aaron standing up to him and defended his and Robert’s actions.

“Why’d you do that?” Robert asked, rolling his eyes and drinking his pint.

“Oh, sorry, I’ll just let him carry on like that shall I?” Aaron asked sarcastically.

“No. I mean, I’m glad you did it, because now he’ll leave us alone at least. I just didn’t expect you to defend us like that.” Robert confessed.

Aaron sighed. “I’m always gonna defend you. Anyways, I was getting sick of having to argue with you lot all the time anyway, it’s always been us lot that got on and your dad just got wound up about it. He’ll get over it eventually.”

Aaron was right. Because eventually Jack did get over it. The Sugden’s and Dingle’s still had their disagreements, but there wasn’t any fighting anymore. The divide was non-existent, and Jack actually accepted Robert for who he is, a bisexual man who fell in love with Aaron Dingle.

The ultimate pivot: Changing business course(s) with COVID-19

Steve Jobs was once quoted “Innovation has nothing to do with how many R and D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R and D. It’s not about money. It’s about the people you have, how you’re led, and how much you get it”.

For many of us, COVID-19 taught business leaders that if they chose not to adjust and pivot their businesses, one of two things would happen, someone else will take their customers, or, the business will no longer survive at all.

There has been a lot written by people far more intelligent than me on what businesses have to do to survive post COVID-19. In fact my brain often hurts with the counterpointing perspectives of what success looks like in the coming months. Many were hit far harder than others, and as for construction, in many ways, the industry was largely spared. This is not to say, it has not been easy and it will remain challenging for a while as the cost of the business of construction, has gone up in ways that could not be factored in pricing of projects even four short months ago.

Between January 2014 and March 10th of 2020, my small business, Constructionlab logged exactly 340,000 km on the 400 series highways of Ontario On average that is about 1,000 km per week for business, or 10 hours of time per week in normal circumstances, but adding in GTA as a large percentage of that, and you are driving on average about 16 hours per week.

For many that is almost 1/2 of a regular work week.Since Monday March 16, my weekly average driving for business related purposes has dropped to 10 km per week or exactly 8 minutes of driving. What happened? My costs, should I realize revenue another way – went completely in the other direction than many.

Constructionlab’s business model is simple. Construction associations and others offer education and professional development as a service, hiring our expertise to design the course material and facilitate the learning in a classroom style atmosphere. Everywhere from Ottawa, to Toronto, to Niagara to the Soo and more.

Like school, on March 13 in Ontario, it was shuttered. No more education offerings in class, no driving, no more anything. Revenue projections reduced 100 per cent in one day for the foreseeable future. Definitely Q2 of 2020 at a minimum, maybe more.

Construction associations, our clients, on the other hand quite some time ago had invested in E-learning to augment in class professional development. While it may not offer the same level of interaction and opportunity to learn from colleagues or share other perspectives, it is nonetheless, a viable base level learning to gain Gold Seal Points, or CPD points for self-directed professional development.

For Constructionlab, there we were – left hanging. Our model was outdated. It did not account for the “what if”. Like many other businesses, I have come to learn – we did not have a disaster plan.

I had always shied away from distance learning, feeling it just was not the type of atmosphere I had come to know teaching in class at St. Clair College in Windsor, or making decisions on methods for delivery of learning as part of the Fanshawe College Program Advisory Committee in London.

Engaged by the Toronto Construction Association a couple of years ago, John Mollenhauer sought out our subject matter expertise to develop e-learning modules for a few courses, but it was not the same, my heart was just not in it beyond building the content and finding a learning management system (LMS) that could work for TCA.

After years of being in the classroom, I could not rationalize the delivery style being the same or able to come close to emulating that learning experience. I was wrong in many ways.

Why did this now matter? In one day, I had to pivot, or my business would no longer be. But was e-learning via webinar the right move?

Enter on-line meeting platforms. Literally in the past 90 days, anyone reading this article has likely become an on-line meeting expert. We use terms like “zoom in” or “go to”, and they are likely to become Webster’s most used words for 2020, naturally following after – coronavirus, of course.

But for a small business, it was do, or die. Give in to the need to learn quickly something that in the past had just not seemed right. Fear of the unknown, that’s really what that is. It is what keeps many entrepreneurs from going forward.

I said to myself, I have to learn to transition the content that was designed for interaction, group exercises, critical thinking and more in a week…or else, in four weeks, turn off the lights.

But was e-learning via webinar the right move? I wondered. It was the question that needed answering.

Back to Steve Jobs…and his quote.

How does a micro business, that serves clients who are not asking you to make the change, because they too are busy trying to figure how to pivot in so many ways themselves…how do you pivot without a huge investment in time or money, when others in the space you occupy have the capital and thought of this already?

You find the best tool you can, work hard and overnight transition your business to a new format. A new model is the answer. You take a risk.

What I learned, now one hundred hours into on-line LIVE sessions facilitated for CCA’s Construction 101, Construction Industry Ethics, Construction 201, Prompt Payment, Invoicing Properly and Adjudication Mechanics in Ontario, and more, is that when challenged, we will do remarkable things. When challenged and given no alternative, innovation (this is really not true innovation, but it is relative to Constructionlab’s business model) will happen, and it can happen even if you are not capitalized to any great degree.

Constructionlab did not need an expensive “fully automated” LMS, that was true, we did not need five hundred different features in a software solution. We needed three things. One, the ability to interact with learners through the very slick use of break-out rooms, two, the ability to share our screen, and three, the ability to transfer files.

Oh…and a fourth, be first to market with a solid real time “LIVE stream” learning solution. Not E-learning webinars that “push” information. Sure, annotations are excellent and allow us to mark up and highlight text or drawings on the go, or even sketch out financial or mathematical formulae, but beyond that, so long as the content was strong, the delivery interactive and in real time, and the facilitator had subject matter expertise that is relatable, real and comes from practical experience, you can have success and pivot!

Constructionlabs’ future has never looked so bright. Our incredible association clients, grabbed onto the idea, asked me to run with it – and by all accounts, successfully! In fact, there are three new opportunities emerging quickly that will forever change my micro business, and they are all really exciting and all because we made the pivot!

I am hopeful that for those reading this story, you too are experiencing success in a new reality. It is what drives the entrepreneurial spirit and confirms that micro and small business truly are nimble and can drive changes needed at a time when the world seems to stand still. Bluetooth phone tracing might help fight the coronavirus pandemic

” There are people who question that it is possible at all. I would state that it is possible,” he stated. “It’s a technique that has strong benefits and I hope its implementation achieves success.”

Bluetooth low-energy, or BLE, is already exceptionally popular– it’s a primary method we connect our smartphones to wireless headphones, speakers, watches, Televisions, and more. And it currently provides a distance noticing or “electronic leash” ability: it can transmit a “hey there” signal while also listening for such beacons from other gadgets.

By logging the strength of those wireless signals, ranges between devices can be approximated determined. This is the foundation upon which PEPP-PT constructed its structure.

When two individuals’s phones save the other’s random numbers, they do so in an encrypted log that not even a phone’s owner can access.

Hi everyone! I'm gonna try to stay on top of my shit but no promises. There are a lot of people that I don't know at all in this game, but so far Randy, Clash, Nick, and Dani have been the people to message me. Dani and I played Guyana together and did well, so it's nice to have her as someone to talk to this early on.

I don't really see any obstacles yet, it's all a matter of how i bring my game to the table and who i learn does it better. This is my second BB game so I have a little bit of learning to do since the gameplay is a bit different than Survivor.

I love the idea of going to Friday night dinner. Not only do i love dinner and Friday nights, but i think it's completely fair and chill. Your decisions may or may not help you and that's what I like. I enjoy seeing how advantages work for different people and how people make weaker ones work in their favor.

I joined this game last minute when I wasn't planning on playing for a while, so I'm still trying to get mentally prepared for the conversations and challenges ahead. I hope that doesn't put a target on my back.
