holy shit this year marks 10 years of this blog and moz!! i can't remember the exact date i started posting here - my archive says i have one post from november 2013 but let's disregard that - but i do remember it was around late 2014/early 2015 :)

^ one of the very first moz art pieces i ever drew, for fallout week 2015!!

memories and art through the years under a read more bc it got long

2014 → baby's first rpg!! i started playing fnv on my cousin's jailbroken xbox late 2013 and finished mid 2014 and i loved every minute of it. i remember waking up at 8am and playing almost nonstop until 2am the next day haha!

i didn't play moz on my first playthrough - but i did start creating a character that would eventually become her: a shorthaired ex-boxer who punched her way through obstacles when diplomacy failed. i remember she spent a lot of time with boone. i liked him then, because he saved my ass more times than i can count. but i digress. this is draft 1 moz essentially

2015 → this is the year that i was doing my thesis so i could graduate but i was so depressed and stressed about it that i distracted myself by replaying fnv on pc, where i played through the dlcs for the first time. i fell in love with the dlcs' oversarching story; particularly ulysses, who i became obssessed with, especially since i couldn't find any content of him at the time. in the game, i played as moz; i had most of her personality and choices down, but her backstory was still up in the air.

fun fact: this was an existing sideblog that i remade to be a fallout blog so i could look for ulysses content, and when i couldn't find any, i made some myself, featuring moz as my main courier six. originally, i didn't ship them, but eventually i ended the year as a courier/ulysses otp shipper.

this was the year i started drawing digitally - my uncle let me borrow a drawing tablet and i used an old copy of photoshop i pirated hehe

2016 → i graduated this year!! and promptly fell deeper into my depression. this was the year that it got so bad that i had to be medicated. through it all, this blog and moz and ulysses and my fandom friends were with me. and for that i am truly grateful :) this was the year i figured out how to lock transparent pixels so that i could color my lineart lol

2017 → i started hammering out moz's backstory this year i think. there's a lot of sketches of her and her family in my files. i experimented with shading and backgrounds here but that experimentation was pretty short-lived

2018 → i started using references seriously!!!! i did a lot of oc on oc kissing this year, featuring mostly moz and many friend ocs haha

2019 → didn't draw much this year. actually this year was a blur and i can't remember much from it except from it being the year of my terrible no good bad copywriting jobs... anyway i did manage to continue my courier/ulysses brainrot and make this piece, which i'm still proud of

2020 → pandemic time. i spent a lot of time asleep at home and i think this was also the year i started doing commissions?? shoutout to anyone who has ever commissioned me - thank you so much, i truly appreciate it!!

2021 → i switched from my old-ass pirated photoshop to clip studio paint and never looked back. also i did a bunch of commissions for my grandmother's surgery, which failed, and i distracted myself from the sadness by drawing my ocs over and over and playing disco elysium

2022 → by this year, i've got moz down pat and have started vaguely developing other ocs instead. but she's still always at the back of my mind

2023 → i bought new brushes from true grit texture supply and immediately found new favorites that i started using for everything. i tentatively started incorporating background elements in some pieces!

2024 → while it's still too early to say where this year will lead me art-wise, i will say that i started experimenting in realistic paint studio (which i bought in 2021, the same time as clip studio paint) a few days ago and i'm liking the results so far. we'll see!

all in all, these last 10 years have been quite a ride, but i'm glad i stuck around and i'm glad you guys stuck around too!! much much love 💖💖💖

can i just say that i absolutely adore your art! Your compositions, colour usage and the atmospheres you create for every single piece you make are so amazing! Every time you post something I drool over every single aspect of your drawings.

Also the way you use and implement your line-art or outlines in your drawings is so cool and effective! It's like you always know where to include or not include line-art or outlining, which also makes your compositions extra cool!

As someone who's always struggled with creating effective compositions and when to implement that sometimes "less is more" I think your art is so impressive! Is it difficult for you to create your compositions and when to include outlines or not?

I've had this sitting in my inbox for a couple weeks sorryyyy haha I wanted ti actually take my time to answer this but keep getting busy lol this is so nice to hear!!! I love hearing like,, specific things that people like about my art

I've recently decided I'm not going to finish the degree because... life, but I was an art direction major in an animation bachelors degree! I learnt a lot about compositing art there! But for the most part with everything else, I'm pretty much self taught!

I'm a slut for lighting and atmosphere in art so its what I focus on most! Its my favourite part of the drawing process! When I've got the sketch and colours down and then I can start building up the layers of shading and highlights and overlays! I add clipping layers ontop of the line art and add colours to the actual lineart where i think it needs it! Sometimes I'll just add a layer ontop of everything and just draw over things and render it further! I wish I could give you more of my thought process but there's reall not much of one, its just chasing how I feel and aiming for a Vibe(tm). Most of my rendered drawings have 70-100 layers, some of them are just,,, bullshit shading and adding other overlays or glow dodge layers.

For composition, I use a lot of references, some I took myself, most off of pinterest or stock image sites. They're my base and I'll photobash something together to get the vibe and then start the actual drawing. Other than that, not a lot of planning goes into it ahaha I tend to just wing it and figure it out as I go which is probably a bad method ahaha

Eye update! It's good news!

Thank you all who bought adopts or otherwise helped out. The retina place cut me a deal, and I also got lucky afterwards (will explain in a sec) and so I am just about as set as I possibly can be, visionwise.

TLDR the thing I was afraid had happened had not happened! I do have some "mild" early-onset vitreous issues but we already knew that. My current problems are a combination of that + a much worsening astigmatism, and unfortunately it's a "learn to live with it" situation but knowing that I am not actually going blind over there has made me pretty cheerful about just accepting the fact that my eyes are still shit, lol. So, the good news is I am not going blind yet; the bad news is that I am still experiencing just the most incredibly annoying visual disturbance you can imagine and will be for the foreseeable future.

In addition, my retina guy hooked me up and I am on regular check-up surveillance with them now, so I won't have to panic next time something goes wrong as I will be able to see someone ASAP and it won't bankrupt me to do so.

The retina guy's recommendation was that I a) get a regular eye exam pronto to address the astigmatism and b) start wearing sunglasses more religiously. I will confess that I was so relieved about the "you're not going blind yet" news that I didn't actually ask why this was/how he knew this besides my eyes watering uncontrollably when they put a light to them, so I'm not sure of what the actual reasoning is, but basically I've been told I need to be wearing sunglasses every time I'm outdoors or even in a particularly brightly lit room, and also that I should be turning down my monitor brightness as much as my work allows me to, which might be tricky for me but I'm going to see what I can do. You may start seeing new color palettes in my adopts soon :V I'm also going to start using a blue light filter as long as I'm doing sketches/lineart and just removing it for coloring.

I was fortunate enough to be able to book a discounted eye exam the very next day (today) and also lucked into some incredible good timing with discounts at Zenni, so I have not only new sunglasses on the way (since my old ones were three prescriptions ago and I couldn't really see out of them), but new regular glasses too, with my new astigmatism corrections. So within the next two weeks or so quite a bit of my vision-related headache issue should be relieved, and I'm hoping it'll let me sit at a computer for more than a couple of hours at a time even with the annoying floaters/flashers, especially since I'm not flying off into an existential panic attack every time I see them now. helloooo, it is me, the D20 mutual!! i'd love to hear about the acofaf project you're working on, and/or patron saint of lost causes (an absolutely kickass name btw)

Ember you are SO 👌👌👌🔥🔥🔥 for asking this because lowkey I've been wanting to share about them both lol.

So first off, my ACOFAF art! My first ACOFAF art, to be specific. :3 I started it earlier this week and am currently on the final lineart stage. It's Wuvvy in the "burn" scene from episode 3 because I love to hurt myself.

For "Patron Saint of Lost Causes," the only context that you need is it's an essay where I just reflect on death lmao. I'm going to be self-indulgent and just post several paragraphs of the very beginning. (Discussion of death starts under the cut in case you'd prefer to avoid it.)

This is a story about the time I did not have a panic attack in the discount holiday decor aisle of the CVS on 53rd and Kimbark. The most important thing to know about the CVS on 53rd and Kimbark is that it's carpeted. The carpet is a not-quite-navy blue and contains much of the store's overwhelming menace. In tandem with the fluorescents, it makes the interior at once too dark and too glaring. This exacerbates the sensory assault from the constant pinging of self-check-out machines and the screaming red 40%-off signs that jump out from around the other side of the aisle like haunted house ghouls. I suspect that's all meant to disorient and send you weaving in deeper. Either that or someone thought it would make the place homier, which is the only other reason I can imagine for giving a drugstore carpet, as opposed to some sane and moppable linoleum like any god-fearing Target. There's an uncanniness to it, like those robots with synthetic flesh stretched over their machinery to give them supposedly friendly faces. The lack of attempt at reassurance would have been preferable.

No one looks at you in the carpeted CVS, because no one looks at anything in the carpeted CVS except for the things they came in to get, because that way they can leave the carpeted CVS faster. This is to say that it's not a bad location for a breakdown, which almost happened because I saw a stuffed rabbit in the picked-through Easter aisle. This was in May. The rabbit had been deposited onto a metal shelf crowded with items in pastel colors that look how a cube of solid fondant tastes. I thought about buying it, thinking I could bring it back to Judith, because Judith might like it, and then I became aware of the weight of my guts like a sack on a string inside me. There was no reason to buy the rabbit, because Judith was dead, which was annoying, because before I would have had a reason to buy the rabbit. This was an interruption to routine.

And I really, honest-to-God tried to have a breakdown about it. The grief was overdue anyway, so it might as well come here and now.

Come on, I thought as I slapped myself around in the aisle, with neither customer nor clerk to stop me. Say uncle. And then after a couple minutes I bought the lightbulb I'd come in for and $16.99 of discount Easter candy that I hadn't.

Yeh so I got a new pen n got some white out for the first time ever so I doodled all over a page

It's nothing special just my characters, a cactus, a sword, screaming ice cream in pain, wings, n a human girl pikachu. And also a heart because that's easy. I drew the human girl pikachu cuz my sister said she wanted me to draw pikachu as a human girl n I figured Pikachu as a human girl would need pigtails (I did not feel like drawing curly hair) and a pleated skirt with knee high socks. And also a tank top as well because iLazy. This might be the most cutest thing I've ever drawn ever. I sketched a bigger piece n had my sister do the lineart but I feel like she lined it weirdly but that's my opinion. The socks are red because I needed to differentiate her leg from her socks.

I drew a cactus because I was thinking about this one Xabio Arts video about sketching very pretty instagramy sketchbook pages. For obvious reasons.

I drew an angel wing but I didn't want to match it so I did the teen angst thing n drew a demon wing on the other side all because the angel wing was pretty

It's a sword. Need I say more?

I just doodle this ice cream in pain because it was bit. I've been doodling it since early freshman year in the class I didn't give a shit about n my math teacher a week ago probably made a pun saying it's ice cream screaming because "I scream" haha get it? Get it? Oh I hope you don't see this Mr. Owrengil or however your name is spelled

N then Andre n Gumdrop are blushing because it's around the time they first find out they like each other. N Citty Kat is just.... Like that. That's just how they are
