The idea is that tournament runners only have to tag this blog, so that I can reblog their announcement post, to gain traction and that tournament enjoyers only have to follow this blog to see all the new tournament announcements.

The variability and inheritence of the white spotted phenotype

White spotting is extremely variable, and a lot of this variability is completely unpredictable. Still, if we look at the parents, are we able to say anything about their offspring?

Homozygotes and heterozygotes

As a rule of thumb, wsws cats have more white than wsw ones. However it isn't just that simple.

Look at these two cats:

Jenny (first) is homozygous, Kiana (second) is heterozygous. This is very clear if we check their family trees.

And what's more: all of Jenny's kits born from no-white tomcats has roughly half as much white as she herself has, and all of Kiana's kits with any white has roughly the same amount as she has.

Using the webpages of the catteries and the pawpeds database I tried to map the white spotting of a great number of norwegian forest cats, and found that these two categories (Jenny-kits and Kiana-kits levels of white spotting) breed rather consistently: for example Kiana's father and grandfather also have the same phenotype.

I have a tentative theory, which really only applies to norwegian forest cats (i certainly don't have enough data to say anything about cats outside of these lines): they actually have two white spotting alleles. I call them ws and ws'.

Jenny has the ws version:

In heterozygotes (wsw) this results in white paws and optionally white on the chest, belly and face. The upper half of the legs are very rarely white. (See her children on the family trees above.)

In homozygotes (wsws) the white goes up all the way on the legs, the entirety of the chest, and usually covers a big part of the face.

Kiana has the ws' version:

In heterozygotes (ws'w) the phenotype very much resembles to a wsws cat.

Homozygotes (ws'ws') are probably very high white level harlequins and vans. I found very few of these.

What happens when you mix the two alleles? You get high bicolors and harlequins: it's additive. And when these ws'ws cats breed, you can beautifully get back the two original alleles:

Of course all of this probably can be explained with some modifier gene(s) (maybe even linked to KIT?), but right now this two-allele model works very well the norwegian forest cats i'm interested in. Call it a working thesis.

I haven't found anyone in the cat genetics world who shares my two-allele theory.

...Or rather I did, one person: Dr. P. W. Whiting described a white spotting model almost identical to mine.

Messybeast however only accepts his idea of dominant white and white spotting being allelic, and dismisses the two different ws alleles. Auch.

My beloved! Would you recommend witcher 3?

grey <3 abso-fucking-lutely grey!!!! the witcher 2 was good as well but the witcher 3 is just something else entirely... i can see why it got the game of the year award! and was recognised so highly! it's absolutely incredible. if you're a fan of the witcher universe then I for sure recommend 2 as well to gather some more context (and meet some of the characters that'll pop up in 3!), but if you're just looking for a genuinely good game then i'd recommend the witcher 3.

it DOES have a degree of gore (which i think is awesome but i know isn't for everyone) and nudity (mostly just boobs tbh) but if you're chill with that then there's really nothing to lose...if i may recommend, check out

from what I've noticed of their site, they have a pretty frequent (if not constant idk) sale on it (this version includes two expansion packs that add extra content!). it's fantasy, adventure, rpg, action, fighting, all that! and honestly...the storyline KIND OF gets you attached and invested in the characters. and to my understanding the game has multiple different endings based off the choices you make. no pressure!

i've laughed a lot, had a lot of fun, sworn at specific monsters that won't die (more times than I'd like to admit in the beginning...), cried ONCE (it was sad ok) and just enjoyed how the game really lets you choose how to play it. apart from the main quests, you can ignore anything you don't want to do, and explore however much you want, and choose how to handle things. idk. i just really love it a whole lot.
