Whenever I see posts like "stop making your characters talk like they want an A in therapy" I cannot help but think this is technically the audience's fault.

You will not believe the amount of adults out there who cannot follow a plot made for teenagers. Who cannot understand points if they are conveyed with cinematography, or anything that isn't straightforward dialogue. Who cannot read into subtleties in that same dialogue, or over-correct and read way too much into things that were never there. Who impose their own framework onto the work and then get mad when the author doesn't follow it. Who fail to understand how certain genres, mediums or target audiences even work. No wonder we have this influx of characters who talk like therapists and media that has to grind itself to a halt to make its point. If they do not do that, someone out there will make an Internet about it and their work will be ripped to shreds by the most annoying people in the world who haven't seen anything more complex that Disney's Ducktales in over a decade.

This is all our doing, and we're now seeing what fiction looks like when everything's smoothed over. And I'm not gonna lie, it's kind of boring.
