I hope this account is open to rambling 😂 "come home to me" just reminded me of this b99 ep, "show me going" (or that ep reminded me of CHTM idk i was literally in the middle of another fic, this whole thing just sprang in my brain out of nowhere) where rosa was one of the responding officers in an active shooting and everyone in the squad was basically ordered to hang back and not help. at first i thought it's kinda weird how worried the b99 squad is, isn't danger like on the job /1
description and they've even been on shootouts with criminals before but then i realized that they were sitting ducks there. told to just sit tight and wait. they weren't even waiting for commands on when and how they could provide back up, they were just waiting for news. it just came to me how helpless they would have felt yknow? how long that hour with beca mia would've been to the bellas. and i can see bree in her house nervously clutching her keys (she would have been holding it, right? /2
in case her sisters need her she's ready to go, she's the first to get to chloe on chap3) while trying to calm some of the bellas (and herself prob) who were getting more worried in the group chat, chloe's curt text not really helping. i wonder if one of them stopped watching the news all together because the updates were just the number of casualties increasing and what if beca is one? did someone begin to be reminded of beca by everything? seeing beca in her own earphones, maybe /3
Hey, I’m always down for some rambling :)
I’m so excited you thought of “Come Home To Me” with that episode, dang! And I LOVE this string of thought because oh totally, the other Bellas would be just as anxious as Chloe was in that situation. You’re exactly right that it’s that pure helplessness in that situation that is the hardest. Given your suggestions and thoughts, I’m really tempted now to write a little fic aside from CHTM that shows their different reactions...
Aubrey paces the floor as she holds her keys in one hand and her phone in the other, her eyes flicking between the unhelpful message from Chloe and the TV screen displaying live updates of the crash. She has to choke back the nausea rolling in her stomach, threatening to break free for the first time since the auditorium incident. She hates being away from Chloe right now - her skin itches with her own inaction - and desperately wants to drive to the accident herself and start searching for one Beca Mitchell, but she knows there’s nothing she can do except wait.
Amy sends her seventh text to Beca in less than five minutes, uncharacteristically serious because no amount of humor will make any of this better. All she can think about is how she and Beca used to share that attic room and how she never really told Beca how much their friendship meant to her, and now she’s scared - terrified - she’ll never get the chance.
Cynthia Rose sits mutely on the couch with her wife, staring at the news channel as shock ripples through her body. She knows Beca is scrappy, a fighter, but she can’t get over how bad the wreckage looks. She pulls her wife closer, tightening her arms around her, sympathy for Chloe crashing over her in waves even as (with no small amount of guilt) she finds herself relieved that her own wife had made it home safely that evening.
Flo is grocery shopping on the other side of the city when she overhears two other women at the checkout talking about a big accident on one of New York’s major highways. Something trickles in the back of her mind, a tingle of unease that she can’t quite place all through her own checkout process and subsequent transport of her groceries to her car. It isn’t until she’s behind the wheel and turns on the radio to hear a bulletin of the accident that she realizes Beca and Chloe live near that highway, and that it’s possible one - or both - of them could have been driving on it at the time. Leaving her car running and in ‘park,’ she fumbles for her phone in a panic, desperate for any word from the Bellas.
Stacie gets the emergency alert and the texts, but she has to follow the news updates discreetly on her phone because her daughter Bella is watching Kim Possible reruns on TV and Stacie doesn’t want to scare her. With every additional casualty confirmed, her chest constricts with fear; all she can think about is how much Bella loves spending time with her aunts Beca and Chloe, and (she hates herself for this) Stacie is already dreading how she’s going to explain to Bella that Beca isn’t going to be there anymore.
Lilly has never felt fear like this before, and she’s been in some scary situations. The difference this time is that it’s Beca who is in danger, and Lilly can’t do anything about it; she’s never felt so helpless in her life. As she watches the cars burn on TV, a wordless shout of frustration tears from her throat, the volume of it startling her pet cockatoo.
Ashley and Jessica have completely abandoned their dinner in favor of watching the news unfold on TV. They’re desperate to call Beca or Chloe or any of the others - Aubrey would know what to do, right? - but they’re terrified of missing something on the news or of clogging up the group chat in case Chloe says more than her brief text. On the kitchen table, their dinner cools, forgotten.
Emily doesn’t even know it’s happening. She’s studying for her Child Psych final in her graduate school’s library, far away from the chaos in New York. Her headphones carry Dean Lewis lyrics to her ears, something soft that serves to drown out the hum of the library lighting. Right now, the biggest worry in her life is passing that exam tomorrow, because the results of that final could be life-changing.
Jesse only knows what’s happening because his fiancee (who is on a business trip to New York) texts him to say she is okay. Confused as to why she would be anything other than okay, he pauses in getting ready to go on his nightly jog and Googles ‘New York’ and is hit with a barrage of breaking news items. His eyebrows draw together as he skims the news articles. It looks like a bad accident, but his fiancee is okay and it’s really unlikely that Beca... he tells himself everything is fine with a shrug, and his unease fades as quickly as it came. He puts his phone away, finishes tying his running shoes, and starts out the door.
