biting the inside of his cheek, megumi gazed at you from afar. smile faintly ghosting over his lips as your familiar laughter rang through the air.
sighing, he tilted his head, eyes not leaving your form as you happily chatted away alongside nobara, excited hands moving about as you vividly explained something to the light brunette who was equally as excited about whatever it was you were talking about.
closing his eyes, megumi reminisced on all the times he’d been the one to make you laugh so brightly. countless times had crossed his mind, but his favourite time was back to almost a year ago. it had just been the two of you, no other students to be acquainted and friendly with yet.
you had dragged him out for a day out, insisting he wasn’t spending enough time with you despite the fact you saw each other on a daily basis. he groaned, but complied to your wishes, secretly pleased you’d been missing his presence.
you’d dragged him to multiple locations throughout the day, energy wearing out as the hours passed by, he had to admit he was happy you had dragged him out. he’d missed you and your infectious smile. making a mental note to spend more time with you, megumi followed your every step back home towards the end of the day. reaching the steps of the dorm buildings, the two of you sat, brilliant oranges and pinks painted the sky above as the sun began to set.
“so, you had fun, i presume? you hardly complained after we got out.” you poked at his side, teasing smile on your face as he playfully scoffed. “somewhat.” he murmured as you dramatically gasped, playfully offended expression on your face.
“you’re a bad liar.” “and you’re a bad sorcerer.” he shot back a little too quickly before his eyes widened. you looked a little taken back, mouth left slightly ajar in shock as the boy began to panic. “no- i'm sorry, i didn’t mean it like that! just- shit- forget i said anything!” he pleaded, hands waving in front of his face as his cheeks grew hot.
he’d expected a comment of disgust and offence to be returned to him, but he was surprised to hear a loud laugh from you. grabbing onto his arm, you laughed hard as you caught your breath. “is that- is that how gojo taught you to banter? you’re too forward fushiguro!”
megumi sighed out in relief. while it was true he’d only ever had gojo to follow by example - and he wasn’t the best person to take inspiration from - he was still anxious when it came to things like casual interaction. you were the closest thing to a friend he had and he sometimes struggled when it came to communicating with you.
he was embarrassed at his own expense, but the way it had you laughing made up for it. he’d embarrass himself a thousand times over if it meant he’d get to hear you laugh so brightly, your beaming smile a rare jewel amongst rocks, he’d never seen someone with such a pretty and genuine smile and he’d continually strive towards earning more smiles like that from you for as long as you were by his side.
that was almost a year ago now though. times had changed and so had the people you were surrounded by. you and megumi stayed close, your bond so tight it could never break, this didn’t mean you were incapable of making newer and stronger bonds with others though.
eyes focused on your face, megumi sighed. you’d smile often, the rare smile he loved was worn on your face a lot more consistently these days. bittersweet feeling brewing inside of him, megumi’s heart felt heavy upon the sounds of your laughter growing louder. he knew you’d be wearing the smile he’d promised to himself he’d make you show more, but he knew it wasn’t him who’d be the one to bring it out anymore.
eyes tearing away from the scene upon the addition of a new voice joining the conversation, megumi did his best to block out the image of what he knew would be before him should he look your way.
beaming smile on your face, you were there in itadori’s arms, utter love and joy held within your smile strictly reserved for him and him alone as the boy coaxed out that bright expression of yours so effortlessly.
squeezing his eyes shut, megumi huffed at the heavy feeling in his chest. the feeling of defeat. he’d wanted to be the one to make you feel and show that certain degree of both love and joy, but things just hadn’t gone the way he wanted. they never did.
