I'm new to f1 but I read somewhere that Charles and Max do the DRS thing last year? and apparently it didn't get that much attention???

yeah, i thought about that too! i think the DRS games max and charles were playing were a bit different though — they were basically playing DRS chicken with one another, as opposed to “helping” each other keep the rest of the pack behind. so that might be part of it (context differs: knowing your rival well enough to try to outwit them/battle & knowing your former teammate well enough to “help” each other/take a gamble on cooperation).

from what i remember (off the top of my head, i think it was bahrain?) the thing there was that there were several close DRS zones, so neither of them wanted to be in front when they hit the zone (as the car behind would immediately overtake). so they were both slowing down intentionally to try to avoid giving the DRS advantage to the other and because they both wanted to be able to get the advantage themself.

i actually do remember some of the commentators and press talking about this “DRS chicken” being pretty impressive, in fairness, but yeah — i don’t think it was treated as fanatically as carlos’s DRS ploy is being treated. i think a lot of the ✨genius✨ framing going on right now is a symptom of RBR’s domination finally breaking… though it’s not like carlos was actually battling with max and managed to outwit him with DRS so 🤷🏼‍♀️
