While La La Land attempts to pay homage to the 1930s movie musicals, the dance films of the early 2000s are far closer in both narrative and style, from casting actual dancers as opposed to amateur dancers; the characters themselves being dancers, or 'hoofers' as referred to in the 30s films; the love story narrative; and the oft repeated cross-class or 'opposites attract' romance, all seen in Step Up (2006), Honey (2003), and Save the Last Dance (2001), as well as Swing Time (1936), You'll Never Get Rich (1941) and Top Hat (1935).
