as someone whos never played the game: the last of us is good tv because its a high stakes zombie thriller with high production, but when you take that away i think it really suffers from a lack of showing v. telling that a lot of adaptations of very beloved medias suffer from. they assume most of their audience have played the game/know the story and they’re just here to see their favorite parts played out in live action so they take so many shortcuts from setting up anything real for the audience besides the rules of the world which cheapens everything else for a viewer who doesn’t know the story at all or for the viewer who loved the story’s depth

#i dont know shit about the game except that it’s notoriously known for being well written #and there are so many parts of the show where they tell me things (ie ‘joel and i are not good people’ etc) #when i feel like they shouldve shown me that instead and let me come to that conclusion by myself #like yeah so many shows now have absolutely lost the art of showing not telling #and feel like they need to spoon feed the audience everything because they dont trust the audience to figure it out #but i feel like its especially true with adaptations #because they Know you know this so telling you isn’t a big deal becuz it was already shown to u in the original media they’re adapting from #which is like. not fucking fair because EYE would like to see it #like i want to be shown this too #and any fan of the original media wants it to be shown so that it can be a good adaptation #anyway #it’s definitely good enough to watch and pedro pascal looks delicious so im not complaining rlly but. #when will we get the art of cinema back #the last of us #tlou #the last of us hbo #m
