I'm not in the habit or practice of naming deer for multiple reasons, but if I was going to name this deer, I would call him "An Embarrassment of Riches." I've been hesitant to post about him because I don't really know what to say. I killed the biggest buck I've ever seen in the wild (and maybe will ever see) on the second day of muzzleloader, and within twelve minutes of first light on opening day of Oklahoma rifle season, I'd killed the second biggest deer I'd ever seen still on foot. A friend compared my incredible hunting season during this terrible 2020 to winning the lottery during the Great Depression, and he's not wrong. I sat there for half an hour or more just staring at his antlers peeking up through the grass where he'd fallen, not twenty yards from where I pulled the trigger. I was in awe of not just him but of my chance to see any deer that morning from the same stand where I'd killed my last. Hunting has a lot to do with preparation, but sometimes it comes down to luck. In 2018, my husband and I ate a big ole bowl of tag soup. For all the hours we spent in the stand and all the work we put in, we didn't kill a deer between us. This year, we put two in the freezer before October was over and added three more in November. You can be in the right stand with the right wind next to the right wheat field, and maybe the deer walked by the stand you're not sitting in today, or maybe he walked just across the fencerow on a place you don't have hunting rights to, or maybe he walked in front of your wife who had actually already killed a monster within the same month's time (Sorry babe!).
