Core Zen Scriptures (what the Zen masters studied)

Zen is said to be based on a "special transmission outside scriptures" which "did not stand upon words", a Zen-tradition rich in doctrinal and textual battleground heavily influenced by the Lankavatara Sutra, the Diamond Sutra, the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Avatamsaka Sutra, and the Lotus Sutra.

Zen is also rich in literature generated by esteemed practitioners such as the Platform Sutra by Huineng, the Transmission of the Lamp, Recorded sayings of Zen Masters, and of course the Koan collection.

Japanese Zen, a subset of Ch’an, is further influenced by Dogen's Shōbōgenzō and Zenshū Shiburoku, which takes a radical departure from Chinese Ch’an in becoming an entirely new religious sect.

Decoding Zen

It has to be stated that the study of Zen is religious, in which religion is defined as the ‘attunement to the spiritual’. The statement that Zen is "special transmission outside scriptures" is code for this attunement, this spiritual awakening, the opening of the 'dharma eye' or enlightenment.

It does not take much reading, either of the core scriptures or that of the Recorded sayings of Zen masters, to see the ‘finger pointing to the moon’ in which the finger is the message of spiritual attunement and the moon is the fully awakened spiritual being in attunement.

Secular Zen

There is a worldly-way view of Zen that only classifies the practices of Zen training and the statements of the Zen Masters as psychological therapy and conditioning-training (cults) in which the student takes on a mind-state of non-attachment that has been called a dissociative disorder.

Wordily-way Zen tends to define compassion as ‘your own individual actions to cease suffering in the worldly-ways around you’, and takes on a more militant political views of Social Justice, Environmental Justice, and Economic Justice.

Zen Tradition (Transmission of mind)

The Zen tradition has nothing to do with Asian cultural norms or style, or the cultures of temple life found in various countries. What we are talking about is the ‘lighting of the lamp’ from mind-to-mind, that is done in a master/disciple style of relationship. Though Huneng, the sixth patriarch of Zen, was said to have his mind awakened as a young boy just by hearing a monk recite the Diamond Sutra in the marketplace, he still sought out the fifth patriarch of Zen, banging on his door and telling him “I want to be a Buddha’. In this, the Mind-to-mind seal is validated and passed on.

This Zen tradition can be formal or informal, a Zen disciple can have one or many teachers. Some can read manuscripts for years before the notion of seeking validation, the Mind Seal, come to play and others have it thrust upon them, as in the case of Samuel L. Lewis. In some cases as in Hakuin, the mind seal is self-evident and validated by those who come to test him.

Zen in Modernity

Mumonkan number 14: Nansen kills the cat

Once the monks of the Western and Eastern Halls were arguing about a cat. Nansen, holding up the cat, said, “You monks! If you can say a word of Zen, I will spare the cat. Otherwise I will kill it.” No one could answer, so Nansen cut the cat in two. That evening, when Joshu returned, Nansen told him of the incident. Joshu thereupon took off his sandal, put it on his head, and walked off. Nansen said, “If you had been there, the cat would have been saved!”

So the story is anecdotal fiction, no cat was actually killed. The case above is about superstitions, in that the monks argued about superstitions and spurious beliefs, and when Nansen countered them on their superstitious beliefs in asking if any of them could say a word of Zen (meaning do they understand or even have studied), the monks could not reply. Joshu later when told of the incident does an odd thing: putting the sandal on ones head is considered disrespectful in Asian and middle-eastern cultures. A sandal is a dirty thing, yet why would Joshu imply that ‘he is a dirty thing?’

Case stories are meant to push the reader beyond conceptual formulaic thinking, to use ones Intuitiveness to ‘know the answer’ without ‘thinking the answer’, and this is actually the Zen practice that the Zen masters hope to teach.

Zen students pick up all kinds of beliefs and ideas, and will believe and practice most anything! Many manuscripts have been written by a great many people who THINK they know what Zen is, yet it is all based in worldly-ways – cats in the Buddha hall! In the end, such books often end up in the rubbish heap destine for obscurity and oblivion.

Zen today is really no different than it was in the days of Joshu. Same problems, same types of students, same issues. Don’t think that you cannot know Zen, or that there are no Zen masters today, for they are certainly out there, just perhaps not where you expect them to be!
