A Wild Sheep Chase: Chapter 2 of Choujin X!
It's here! I've gushed about the chapter over at my Twitter, but like I said in my previous post, I want to see how the story progresses and keep a log about it. So here it goes!
Background info on Ely Otsuta
So before we delve into Chapter 2 which almost exclusively featured Ely... Let's take note of the new things we learned about Ely:
She's from a rural prefecture. I think she lives in the mountainside specifically since that's where she grows her tomatoes.
She's a greenthumb (we already kinda knew this from the previous chapter but we learn more about her life pre-Choujin X). I understand that even if the soil is infertile, she's able to grow tomatoes so nutritious and plump. So plump, they resemble butts, hence, "bumbums!" It appears she uses advanced equipment for her farming stuff. So yeah, based on these, it's established Ely has a green thumb!
Oh, and it appears that it's clarified that her "Grandpapi" whom she talks about in the 1st chapter is an adoptive grandfather (not biological, hence, maybe in the future we'd know her parents and learn why Ely is special).
It's just me but I get the impression that Ely is being introduced as some sort of "fertility" choujin, since she also dreams of having 9 kids. Haha!
It's kinda weird though why the burning tomato has a face. Was it just from her dream, since after plucking a bumbum - she woke up? Hmm, after some thought, I think the burning tomato with a face is just from her dream.
Ely Wakes Up from Reality
When Ely woke up, she finds herself in the South Yamato prefecture. Okay, so I think this leaning tower of some sort has a significance to the story.
Tumblr media
It's featured in every spread with the title "Choujin X" and also in the last chapter. Can you see it? Maybe it has something to do with how the powers are made, like pollution-related or a botched experiment. Dunno. Just my wild speculation.

A Wild Sheep Chase
This is the exciting part. So when Ely wakes up, Chandra Hume offers to "escort" her, but really it appears he wants to kidnap her. And from, *checks the manga* page 10 to 40, we have Ely running away from Chandra until she fell in what looks like a similar area where Tokio and Azuma fought Johnny Kiyoshi Takeyama.
The chase sequence consisting of 30 pages were so fun and I was smiling all the while I was reading! Ely is so cute trying to parkour her way through the buildings (kinda reminds me of Touka?? I miss Touka!). Chandra looks really cool, he seemed to be flying too, using his powers (more on that later)!
Tumblr media
But not to be outdone, Ely borrows a "Roller Boy Yay-Yay" which basically is a scooter with something that resembles a driver's wheel. Its literal translation of ローラーBOYイェイ・イェイ -- which, checking Twitter and in Ishida's latest live stream, I think the locals found it hilarious too. Ishida is just unleashing his crazy here, I love it!
After that sequence, we get the tractor and sheep chase. Ah! I love it.. So what happened is that, Chandra and Ely fall off from their Roller Boy Yay-Yay. Ely who just claimed she can outrun Chandra if she were riding a tractor, suddenly found one right in front of her! Then Chandra lands near a gang... or should I say, a flock of sheep-bikers. They're all wearing these Kanji-printed tracksuits and basically look like they're a bunch of delinquents? They even describe themselves as "cryptid bikers"... Cryptid supposedly means mysterious? Idk why the weird choice of words for the translation though.
Funnily, I was just reading Haruki Murakami's A Wild Sheep Chase (羊をめぐる冒険 --- Hitsuji o meguru bōken or literally An Adventure Surrounding Sheep). I wonder if this scene something to do with this book?
Anyway, Chandra entices the sheep to help hip capture Ely by bribing them with a Docomo flip phone. I don't know why a flip phone - could mean the following: (a) the sheep are so poor, a flip phone is cool; (b) maybe flip phones are a status symbol in that universe; (c) maybe the setting is in the 2000s when the flip phones really were all the rage.
So they all chase Ely, but Chandra suddenly has a car too. Someone on Twitter said it's a Porsche? But I can't tell, though Chandra said his car is a four-wheel drive... Heh? Idk what to do with this info.
As for Ely, she is really good with the tractor as she said. The hilarity of outrunning motorcycles and what could be a Porsche. That tractor prowess! Later on, Chandra and the other sheep figure into an accident with a "safety-loving" truck (oh the irony, lol). Chandra flew off the car and so did his fancy shoes...
Tumblr media
Ely didn't exactly come out unscathed. Ishida allocated 4 double spreads for this epic fall. Some of the sheep definitely should have died from that spectacular accident.
At first, Ely was smug about escaping the sheep. But then, I think she was moved by compassion and I think she hurt herself in order to revive the sheep. I just wonder though, how she learned to do that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we get another awesome double spread of her transformation, similar to Tokio's. Augh Ishida-sensei. These are soooo good!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of her transformation, the whole area was engulfed with smoked and I think the sheep were effectively revived. It appears Chandra saw all this (while he was regenerating... so we now know choujins or at least smoke choujins like Chandra has regenerative powers), hence he marveled at Ely's newfound power. It was kinda confirmed that Ely was responsible for keeping the casualties to a minimum. Specifically he said Ely possesses: quick judgment, though resolve, persistence... making her a human with the makings of a choujin... while also kinda noting Ely's silliness.
Here we go again with Chandra's "fancy gentleman" facade... Even the way he talks is fancy ("I am well-acquainted with the roads here") but more than that... he's self-important. I talked about my other views on his character on Reddit. I get the impression he's something of a "Choujin supremacist", you know what I mean? So, he wants to kinda recruit Ely into his organization or whatever.
Ely is righteous
So we see that Ely is further introduced as a good character, standing up against Chandra and rejecting his offer to be his pupil or something. Ely was clearly upset about the grandma getting hurt (did she die? I hope she didn't) and made it clear she would never join him. Chandra takes offense at this rejection, especially when Ely said Chandra is worse than a turd.
As Chandra tries to inflict pain on Ely (something about marking her on the face), she recalls her resolve from Chapter 1: drones for farming, a greenhouse, her grandpappy, a mansion, the big dog, paying back the kid for his roller boy yay-yay, the Goldilocks hubbie, nine kids... But just before we can see if she can fight Chandra off...
The most handsome man of all Sui Ishida's works (haha!)
This buff mysterious man with a bandana reminiscent of the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles seemed to have blown Chandra and Ely (also the cars and motorcycles) away by a mere clap of his hands. It appears even Chandra is afraid of this guy and recognizes him... he leaves the scene using his smoke powers before the guy can do serious damage. I think his power has something to do with wind since there was like a little hint with all the ventilation stuff in the setting.
The guy manages to create a circle of protection around Ely. He tells Ely that Chandra's modus is to target "people with aptitude like Ely". He helpfully mends Ely's punctured hand with his bandana.... And when Ely looks up at his face, what do you know? Haha!
Our girl Ely has a love interest! Haha.
Tokio's Gregor Samsa moment
I've observed from the manga I've read that characters with transformation abilities always, always go through this adjustment period with the power. Gregor Samsa, Peter Parker, our boy Kaneki... Anyway, it seems Tokio doesn't know or can't turn back into a normal-looking person. But the last panel sure is interesting because we have them experiencing this transformation at the same time. Also, since it reminds me of Touka and Ayato's volume cover. I hope they find each other soon though!
Types of Choujins and initial premises on the Power of Choujins
So there are 3 confirmed types so far: Flexi (Johnny), Bestial (our boy Tokio), and Smoke. It seems that pretty boy Hoshi doesn't have a category yet, but like I said I think his has something to do with air or ventilation lol.
We learned that Chandra is a Smoke Choujin, and Ely is now one too and she was may have been somehow infected by Chandra's smoke/fumes. It appears now that there are 2 ways to become a choujin: injection and inhalation. Chandra wonders if Ely was infected with his power... But I'm thinking the infection theory might not be that accurate. After all, it seems Ely has a green thumb.
But, I think as Chandra said, only some people have an aptitude for this. So, Ely and Tokio are examples. I wonder if Azuma also has choujin powers or did it not manifest yet? Is the aptitude inherent or something you can acquire? If so, what does Tokio have that Azuma doesn't, especially since everyone thinks Azuma is "better" than Tokio in all aspects?
We'll find out in Chapter 3 more or less!! I'm sorry for any grammar mistakes! I'd like to hear your thoughts or comments if any :)

Thanks to the lovely @interestedbystanderwrites for taking the time to answer these! Get to know more about lovely Cass, go give her a follow and then show her some love!
These questions are from this list. You should check it out, there’s 50 questions all together and they’d be great to ask your favorite fic writer!
1) How old were you when you first starting writing fan-fiction?
Ha! I was a teenager and it was Backstreet Boys – and smut didn’t exist the same way it does now but that’s another opinion for another day. What I wrote then was cutesy and romantic, probably because that was what I was daydreaming about, I guess. Just a reminder that my blog is NSFW if you’re under 18.
2) Do you prefer writing OC’s or reader inserts? Explain your answer.
I think I can get more depth from an OC but you also risk the Mary-Sue and you may pigeonhole your OC in race, sexuality etc. That can really open a can of worms with the reader, which is wholly understandable. Reader inserts are great in the way you can make it 100% person to the reader. They should imagine themselves (if that’s their choice) and not feel that the writer has alienated them in any way somehow but it is still difficult to please everybody.
3) What is your favorite genre to write for?
I like fluff – I like things that make you smile at the end, give the reader a little cuddle to maybe brighten their day.
4) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?
One that never made my masterlist – a Spider-Man super angst titled “How Long Do You Want to be Loved?”. I thought it as okay, pretty good even – but I guess people just want Bucky or Sebastian smut haha I hear you all!
5) When is your preferred time to write?
Morning when the little guy is napping ☺ Evening is hard because it’s when I play adulting catch up… or try not to fall asleep on the couch.
6) Where do you take your inspiration from?
I have a very overactive imagination, always have. And for most of my fics, I guess it’s pretty obviously the beautiful aesthetics of Sebastian Stan and to a lesser extent, Bucky Barnes.
7) In your Time Only Flies When You’re Around Series, what’s your favorite scene that you wrote?
Chapters 27 and 28 of TOFWYA – more so 28 as you get a pretty interesting insight into Sasha’s and Sebastian’s ways of coping when they’re out of sync. Long story short, they’re a mess.
8) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?
Luckily – none! The joys of a smolblog maybe?
9) Who is your favorite character to write for? Why?
I love writing for Buckster – he’s a complex devil and has a lot of layers to work with and a body to die for. Thumbs up for the material, Sebastian.
10) Who is your least favourite character to write for? Why?
As per mentioned before – Peter Parker. That fic scarred me.
11) How did you come up with the title for the Time Only Flies When You’re Around Series?
It’s actually a song lyric as are the first few chapter titles: Belinda Carlisle – Valentine
I made a rule about you, I made a plan // For getting my feet back on the ground // Bury my face in clouds, for hours on end // But time only flies when you're around
12) How did you come up with the idea for the Time Only Flies When You’re Around Series?
I was just writing some stuff, pissfarting around and all of a sudden I’d written something similar to what Chapter 22 ended up being and that’s how it all began. 150k words of nonsense really.
13) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?
Many – but there is a long Bucky multichap fic that deserves more of my attention. As his story has evolves via MCU, the story has changed a little.
14) Are there any stories that you’ve written that you’d really love to do a sequel to?
I write one shots to TOFWYA, I don’t think I could write the sequel to it though. I’ve considered a full fic for Take Me to the Water but I doubt I will for an AU. Any sequels will be little one shots so at this stage, there is nothing planned.
15) Are there any stories that you wished you’d ended differently?
I ended Next Year very kitsch – I regret the last sentence as it currently is: You gave him a small smile, overwhelmed by his words. “I love you too, Bucky Barnes.” Blurgh.
16) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?
How much time do you have for me to talk about @whostheblondegirlwriting? Truly. My fandom soul mate. We are separated by far too many kilometres and time zones, but between her job and me mummying, we’re chatting at all hours of the day. She is a true gem and I adore her.
17) Do you have a story that you look back on and cringe when you reread it?
Luckily, it’s not available on A03 or Tumblr, but it’s still online elsewhere because I thought about it a few weeks ago – it was a Lords of Dogtown fic… and it was not good. Saying that, anything before that I would cringe at anything I’d written anyway ha!
18) Do you prefer listening to music when you’re writing or do you need silence?
Definitely music or the sound of the baby monitor that I find quite soothing.
19) Have you ever cried whilst writing a story?
Argh. “How Long Do You Want to be Loved” messed me up. Too many parental feels.
20) Which part of your Time Only Flies When You’re Around Series was the hardest to write?
The proposal. I went over it a thousand times. I thought, should it be romantic, should it be grand, should it be this or that? How it happened, just a couple in love, in the city they love, being themselves just seemed to fit when it finally came together.
21) Do you make a general outline for your stories or do you just go with the flow?
I occasionally outline – but mostly I just write, write, write and then start toying with it afterwards. I’m constantly chopping and changing, but I’m not pedantic about planning. It isn’t that kind of fic. Other multichaps I put a bit more planning and emphasis on.
22) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fan-fiction?
You’re only as good as your last fic and its reblogs. If you’re going to get hung up on likes/reblogs/comments, you’ll never publish something again. But it can be bloody disheartening at times.
23) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?
Time Only Flies When You’re Around? Haha busted my ass on that beast for over a year. It has the hits but likes and comments are encouraging when received. When. I always considered publishing it on Tumblr, but I don’t know. It’s freely available on A03.
24) In contrast to 23 is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?
Smut talks – I think Heatstroke is a little silly. But it gets hits.
25) Are any of your characters based on real people?
Nope – any characters, inc OC’s are all fictional. I don’t know if I could handle people in my real life if they were like my OC’s!
26) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?
Any body that takes the time to leave a ‘yes!’, ‘omg’ to paragraphs of reiterating your story back to you – it’s amazing! Taking the time to leave a writer a comment makes our day.
27) What’s the harshest criticism you’ve gotten?
It still makes me laugh when I read it, not quite verbatim but it was along the lines of ‘I loved this fic but it’s gone a total 180. I’ll see how you continue but you know, I’m probably out of here’. While I know you can’t please anyone, it’s a strange comment. I’m old enough to appreciate constructive criticism. This was neither here nor there, but still hilarious!
28) Do you share your story ideas with anyone else or do you keep them close to your chest?
Back to my love, @whostheblondegirlwriting, we’re constantly taunting the other or beta’ing each others stuff when we have time to help the other (let alone write our own stuff!).
29) Do people know you write fan-fiction?
In real life? No. On this hellsite? I have made some amazing writing friends!
30) What’s you favorite minor character you’ve written?
Ollie in TOFWYA – she’s a completely stereotypical New Yorker, brash, in your face and on the other hand, Sasha’s best friend in the world and they’d do anything for each other. If you knew Ollie in real life, you’d absolutely hate her.
31) What spurs you on during the writing process?
People simply enjoying your work and letting you know is the most amazing aphrodisiac. I’ll never stop writing – whether it’s for myself or for other people to enjoy. Don’t ever be scared to let a writer know if you’ve enjoyed their work or if you haven’t, a writer should be able to accept your constructive criticism and will probably appreciate your feedback if you take the time to provide it respectfully! If you’re going to go on anon and talk shit, just don’t bother. It’s boring, childish and completely unoriginal. Shows true testament to your personality offline.
32) What’s your favorite trope to write?
Friends to Lovers. THEY WERE FRIENDS AND NOW THEY ARE… LOVERS!
33) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?
Not a clue – but will assume it’s Backstreet Boys-related!
34) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?
Smut will get you the hits but fluff is forever.

Infinity War Opinion
I am not going to give this thing a rating of one or two thumbs up, or a scale of 1-5 stars. cause those are stupid and pointless. Its whether or not the movie was enjoyable or not and then talking about the things that bothered or excited me about the project. I am not an expert and these are my opinions, treat them as such. I will gladly have a discussion about these opinions, but I won't take part in silly yelling matches behind a keyboard. That is boring and a waste of time. So on to Infinity War!
First things first, Thanos is the real MVP of Infinity War. That is the only way to score this movie. Yes, Thor was the best Avenger, and I will argue for days about that fact.
For starters Thor loses his brother, sure they weren't always on good terms but its family, then he loses his entire people(?), I'm really not sure if Thanos let half of them live somewhere or not, but he did blow up their ship. Thor survives the ship blowing up, floating in space for an unidentified amount of time then rescued by the guardians of the galaxy. Calls Rocket a "rabbit" and convinces this ship of people he doesn't know to give him a ship and a crew and just leaves. He then gets a new eye (not sure the importance their, but I kinda liked one eyed Thor.) Then he goes to a star forge. He restarts the forge by again, going into space with no need of breathing apparatus, and just pulls the forge until it restarts the star. A fucking star! Then he helps really tall dwarf Peter Dinklage forge a new hammer. FYI this requires Thor to hold open the forge which exposes him to the heat and power of a star. Again, a fucking star! He gets his hammer, and he can now ride the bifrost and he returns to Earth to kick some ass and take some names. Almost killing Thanos. Show me any other character that went through more in this movie that was part of the good guys. Cause I'll give you a hint no one even comes close. My major bore of this movie was the lack of character development. Yes we had 10 years and 18 movies to get to know everyone, but I could still use a little character struggle from the good guys. The only struggle these people had to go through was to kill one of their own to save half the universe. While that is kind of a heavy thing for Vision and Gamora, That only puts development on Star Lord and Scarlet Witch. They are the ones asked to do the deed, and its funny cause both end up deciding to save the universe, and both fail because of the infinity stones. It reveals that those heros are willing to kill a good person to save a shit ton of other people, and it breaks them. I really wish Thanos' "children" were a little more developed, they were just ugly people doing mean (sometimes awesome) things to try and get the stones. The main "child" was awesome and I thought he really got shafted with a stupid Aliens reference. Side note, I know Peter Parker is a super genius teenager, but why is his main joke making movie references that don't apply to his generation. (We had Star Wars in Civil war, and if he was trying to be a movie nerd, he would have known that they are called At-At's. So lets stop with those jokes. Which they sort of did, but I'll get to that later. The bad guys were really not that great. Thanos was amazing, but every other villainous role, was so fucking dull and boring that I wanted more. It was just a bunch of stir crazed alien dogs on a hunt. We don't know where they were from, if they were there by choice, if they cared that they were slaves of Thanos, anything. They were worse then soldiers, they were just weird looking dogs. So point against Marvel for lack of originality when it came to Thanos' minion's. That being said Thanos still won and it was awesome.
Now I don't want to do much speculation on the next movie, because speculation ruins movies, but that is for another rant (see my friends podcast Problematic Pod at problematicpod.com where I really go to town on the subject but I digress). But we must address the large emotional elephant in the room. The 50% of people that died at the end. Including our main man Peter Parker, Black Panther, Star Lord, and even Dr. Strange. I'm pretty sure they are going to be making more movies with these people as the main protagonist, and while I would love to brag to my grandchildren about the amount of actors I witnessed wear the spidey suit before I was 30 I'd be happy if it stays with its current host, and there are a large contingency of fans that I think agree. So this puts Marvel in a very tricky situation. My biggest worry is if they bring most or all of these characters back to life in the next movie will they have cheapened the first movies biggest gut punch? Now I could speculate on how they bring them back, the time stone, or soul stone or what have you, but I think the biggest thing for the next movie is if they do plan on bringing these characters back (very very likely) then how do they do it while making this first movie still land that punch upon re-watching. I think its important that in order to bring them back it better cost a lot cause if it is just someone turning back time like superman flying in reverse around the earth ruined this movie. It makes the emotion of the moment mean nothing if it could so easily be reversed. Which worked really well when Scarlet Witch killed Vision and the stone only to have him brought back and then killed again. That was a good use the whole turn back time thing. So I think as it stands now all those deaths were amazing because it was showing how bad ass Thanos and the gauntlet were. Now don't ruin it by fixing it too easily. Now lets talk about the most interesting story line of the next film, and no its not going to be the quest to bring back half the universe. This line in question is the fight between the hulk and Bruce Banner. Before Thanos beat the shit out of Hulk that dude hadn't lost a single fight and one single loss has got him scared to come out again. Its a new emotional level from a giant, supposedly fueled by rage, monster.  I find it a bit silly Bruce is so eager for the big guy to come back, because now he has a lot of personality, and because he was the hulk for so many years Bruce was afraid that he might never be Bruce again if he went back to the big guy. But now he is ordering the big guy out. So I'm getting mixed signals here.
*Also side rant, I am pissed with the beginning of this film. Lets clarify a few things at the end of Thor Ragnarok they are on the ship and Thanos is picking them up. On this ship we have some key players that show up in Infinity war: Thor, Loki, Hulk, and Heimdall. At the end of the movie (Ragnarok) there were a few other characters that stole most scenes they were in, Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie and director Taika Waititi's Korg. I mean am I supposed to believe the best bit character of the MCU gets an unceremonious death off screen without a single line of dialogue! I was pissed the moment that ship blew up and I had no idea where those people went. (It was close to the moment in The Last Jedi where Admiral Akbar gets the short end of the stick). If they are smart they will bring Korg on in the knew one, cause all the comic relief died with Star Lord, Spider-Man, Drax, and even Groot. He would be a good addition to this new adventure, and Thor can just fly anywhere now with that awesome war hammer. But back to the Banner question. I am wondering what will make him come out and play. I hope its cool and worth while, not some stupid scene where everyone gets in line and shakes him and slaps him in the face a-la Airplane.
But overall I think it was a very entertaining movie. The best part was at moments I was actually really excited for Thanos. There was a part of me that wanted him to get all the stones, because I knew it would be the best possible version of a near indestructible bad guy, and he did not disappoint. That dude pulled down an entire moon from orbit to come crashing down on Iron Man and company. My favorite part may have been the end where he meet Gamora in the amazingly orange temple arch and she asks him what did it take, and his response of "everything" was awesome. It was a story in which the man wanting it more succeeded. If Star Lord wanted it more he wouldn't have slapped Thanos in the face, and lost control of his emotions. Thanos was stronger then all of them mentally and physically.
Now I have one more tiny problem with this film, and its more of a stupid movie thing that made me groan out loud (gol?). It was when Dr. Strange was all like, "I was just looking at millions upon trillions of potential futures to this outcome. And there is only 1 where we succeed." And this one in which they succeed requires Star Lord getting all love sick knowing Thanos killed his girl, and he ruins it for everyone and then that results in Tony getting stabbed, Dr. Strange giving up the time stone and then half the universe needing to die? Was that part of the 1 in which Thanos loses...bullshit. I could see a percentage. like 1% cause that at least gives a few possibilities of success. where as this one single time line that leads to success means I am going to judge really hard any movie magic that happens in the next Avengers next summer cause I know its was the only course of action that would lead to victory. The ONLY one! Come one! I give it... 3 swims.
