The Wedding We Should Have Got (one of them anyways)
There’s only some things I would change from this lovely art (ertacaltinoz on instagram) and that is that Rhaenys and Corly refused to attend Viserys wedding to Alicent bc they took it as a slight against their daughter Laena.
And I’d add this crown to Rhaenyra’s design:
A nod to the jade tiara Daemon brought back for Rhaenyra, the tiara having allegedly belonged to the Empress of Leng.
So just to clarify, we’d go from this:
To this outfit and hair w/ the Tiara:
The reason I find the dress design so appealing is bc I think it reminds me of a more fitted, more appealing version of this dress in some of the artwork of Queen Rhaenyra:

in this house we love a matching mother and son moment!
i'm pretty sure these are the only two characters we ever see in this cut too so that begs the question: which one do you think came first? was alicent inspired by aemond, or the other way around?
since the cut seems particularly masculine it would make a lot of sense to me if alicent deliberately borrowed inspo from aemond's fashion, given that in this scene she's the only woman in a room full of men who all think they know better than her. i'm sure i'm not the only woman who can relate to deliberately trying to appear more masculine in an effort to be taken more seriously by men.

Alicent’s robin blue dress
I absolutely love this dress because it’s very understated but once you look at it more you see how many details make it such a great dress!
First the dress and chemise are very pale which makes fabric prone to showing dirt. This dress will need to be laundered more than a darker colored dress
The lace would be hand made and individually stitched down to the dress
The fabric also has this interesting raised dot pattern which must be hard to weave onto fabric or treat the fabric to achieve
The chemise looks like it’s made out of Indian Muslin which is a very thinly woven, almost translucent, cotton fabric
The dress doesn’t have a waist line (this is actually scene in many medieval dresses) which requires long panels for the dress that use a lot more fabric because the pieces can’t maximize fabric space
And all the gold details!!! So freaking cute!
This is my bread and butter, I have my Bachelors in fashion design and focused on historical fashion.
Besides this dress showing the wealth of the hightowers, it also introduces us to Alicent’s character. She wears pale colors that don’t stand out much. Her dress is also very modest especially when compared to her future dresses. She also enjoys uncomplicated designs that are very flowy and captures that care free essence of nature. Blue is also a calming color showing use that Alicent is in her element and is probably the most relaxed she ever is in her life.
This is a beautiful dress and it helps introduce us to young Alicent and her characteristics.

What is your favorite dress of young Alicent? And older alicent?
ooh such a good but hard question
for young alicent, her first dress is easily my favourite
its so simple and elegant, it feels... childish... and for a character who had that robbed of her, its just refreshing to look back on. while she looks great in green, blue was her color and really birhgtened her up. I love how this dress looks and what it signifies for her.
older alicent is so tough though, cause I loved every one of her dresses so much. but I think I have to go with this one;
I love all the little details and all the things I know she would have loved about it. it looks comfortable and light, with the modest v neck and loose sleeves. it covers her up, which is something we see to important to her, as she tends to keep very modest (which makes sense for her as a character) while not smothering her. its also just very elegant, with the cold embroidering and the cape she has. 10/10 dress.
she does have two dresses that don't compare and are their own s teir ranking and its The green dress and her 7-pointed star dress:
you just can't compare, it's not possible. the regalness the modesty, the power they hold. they're their own category nothing beats them.
and an honorable mention, cause it's not really a dress and the scene it's in is so heartbreaking but it's just so pretty, her nightgown;
it's just so feminine in a simple, dainty way. the sleeves the neckline the flow of the fabric, it's just perfect. I want it for myself.
Edit: I just realized that the second dress not only had a cape she can wear, but a long vest like cover layer (see middle photo). I love such a simple detail.

How it feels like being a fan of Afro-Futurism and Afro Surrealism watching Hotd.
I just want to understand, you know.
You get to make a change with this very famous series and add diversity to have Corlys in the same shirt for 26 years? (Corlys being such a baddie but refusing to change accessories for the outfit?)
We lived in a world where Ruth Carter had won her Oscar for Black Panther and you dress them like every other bitch at the height of their power?
This isn't even about them being black because they aren't in this world. But, what they are is a massive trade house that's frequently leading explorations all over the world.
Why is Laena in a Baratheon type dress in Pentos?
Why are her girls having dinner with the Pentoshi Prince in clothes very similar to their night gowns?( I didn't know it was different outfits. I just found that out.)
Why does young Rhaena have more costume changes in one night than teen Rhaena has in days?
It would've been so fun to make house Velayron distinctly noble, using non European inspiration at similar time periods.
You could've had the added element of Jace, Luke, and Joffery in Velayron clothes that obviously don't suit them when they were young and as they grow up lean more to the Targs and Velayrons respectively. Instead, we choose color distinctions.
I try to be kind, but this still hurts me.

I need one just one asoiaf adaptation with men and women in hats and viels and other types of head covering or any historical fashion peices. I absolutely love the Catholic mom era of alicent because she wears the French hood, large jewellery and they went all out with her styling. Why can't we have feathered hats for men and hats and veils for women!
All the dresses across the generation look the same, and so modern, I love the dresses and the fashion don't get me wrong but seeing alicent in her sort of 16th centruy get up made me realise the potential of time change world building and historical fashion in Westeros
I forgot about the gorgeous byzantine inspired costume for rhaenyra being named heir
Willem Blackwood sporting some 15th centruy collar
And velaryn boys have the best mens costumes
The last one looks 15th to 16th century, ruffs being replaced by scarves and again the lack of jewellery just makes it kind of generic

New Ideas for HOTD pt.3
So for this dress, I’m not exactly sure which scene I’d want the dress replaced for:
She wears this dress twice, once when she was meeting with the Lords for her hand, and again when she was meeting with Laenor to discuss their betrothal.
It’s hard to decide bc for one I can’t really tell where Rhaenyra is at when she’s meeting with the Lords. Some say it’s storms end, but a lot of people are saying she’s on Dragonstone. I like the idea that she was on dragonstone but my only issue is the fact that the original season finally was supposed to take place in Dragonstone’s throne room, but they didn’t get the chance to build it…
That doesn’t make sense if this is Rhaenyra on Dragonstone. So when trying to decide which dress suits which climate I’m just…idk man, I’m confused
Continuing on, the dress in question is this:
As you can see it appears to be a little warmer fabric which I originally thought might better suit her walk on the beach due to the oceans breeze, but now I’m starting to think a stone room might require more warmth.
She also appeared a bit colder in that Great Hall with the Lords and in general, bored even. I image her reflecting this in her appearance. A darker Targaryen Red, dragon scales embroidered into the frantic like some of Danaerys’ dresses in GOT. It still a similar design style as well, with the off the shoulders design, and I do believe that at that time she’d be wearing more silver or steel colored jewelry to match Daemons Necklace. And again it would fit her defiance against marriage in her reflecting both her house colors and sigil.
Also I find that when earrings hang they frame the jawline better, giving her an even more colder appearance as she stares down judging at them.
I’m unsure about the hairstyle though, as Alicent and Helaena have been seen with these hairstyles a number of times, not saying she’s petty but 👀
So perhaps something like this:
(W/ Straight hair obviously)
With this as her circlet tiara (before Daemon gifts her the Jade one) as a testament to her father:
I know it’s her Crown in the book but since they’ve changed the crown I think we can change it a bit more. So instead of the crown just having the gold sigils of the great houses, we bring the jewels back and let the be a representation of the seven realms and the seven gods:

Rhaenyra’s Golden Dress
Very happy to post this Rhaenyra Targaryen sketch and analysis of her gold dress!
The first thing that really fascinates me about this dress is that it uses darts to fit the dress to her. Darts are used in modern apparel making to fit clothing to the curves of the body. In medieval and late medieval times, the garment was fitted to the body with belts, pleats, paneling, or undergarment structure like stays. We don’t see garments with darts until around the Victorian era. There are some earlier riding coats that use darts but it’s a very limited practice overall. This tells us that either Westeros uses modern pattern making or dress forms when constructing garments OR the production was rushed and it was easier to just due darts. I’d say it was rushed because the fit of this dress is very bad. The sleeves don’t lay properly, there are tension lines at the armpits, and the neckline doesn’t lay flat.
Past the construction, I find it very interesting that we don’t see her in this pure gold after the first two episodes. We get a pale tan but nothing gold. This is because once she realizes that her best friend is marring her dad, her happy childhood ends and she has to align herself more with her house and duties.
She also has some abstract plant details on the neckline and a long vertical strip of vine embroidery down the front. This links her and Alicent with this nature theme and the idea of a carefree life.
The short sleeves are also an interesting choice because I don’t think we see any other character in short sleeves. It shows Rhaenyra to be a bit of a rebel even now as she dresses outside what is considered normal for the time.
This part is very much speculation but I think the front embroidery might be cloth of gold. It would be a major wealth flex and would just be super cool. Cloth of gold is literal gold woven with fibers to make cloth is so cool and also super heavy.
Her coronation cape is definitely cloth of gold.
I really like that Rhaenyra is dressed in colors similar to Syrax instead of Targaryen ones to show she’s wild and free spirited. I also love that the dresses could be seen as complementary colors, pale blue and pale yellow/orange! Like how the two girls complements each other but are opposites 😭

cosplayers, fashion nerds, LARPers, vintage costumer's, anyone else who may be helpful, I have a question;
what style/era of clothing is closest to the style of clothing worn by the royal family in house of the dragon? I'm sure it isn't accurate to anything in specific in our world, but if I wanted to find similar clothing what would I search for?
