Something not talking about enough by me is Cross’s humanity.

Hoshino gives him a current score of .5…..out of 5 and yet, she RARELY shows Cross’s non-human side. She never focuses on the Cross hidden behind the mask the way other mangakas do when trying to express a two faced ‘masked’ character. She keeps the camera on his bare face almost always. She *insists* he is a devil while whispering just how venerable and human Cross really is.

A few examples.

She may also be expressing that Cross is ashamed of this part of himself, which is in line with his character. Cross is a man who feels he’s sacrificing things like Allen or Anita to end the war, to end the worldwide suffering. He knows the path he’s on can ONLY be lined with the corpses of the people loves. In part because they love him too much to watch him destroy himself like this and make the mistake of trying to save him….only to die. In other cases, it’s because that’s always what’s demanded of the ‘hero’ of his story: personal sacrifice. He knows must suffer so others may smile.

I think…A LOT about how Tiedoll jokingly refers to Cross as ‘the prodigal son’ which is another name for Jesus Christ. Tiedoll has watched Cross suffer and take on more and suffer and never ever stop. And I imagine he finds Cross’s suffering as slightly performative. Thus: Cross Marian as the prodigal son. A nickname mocking who Cross thinks he’s mimicking and also his incredible ability to show up and fix things.

the real reason why d gray man is the best is because you reach a certain point in the story where you go "okay, there's no way that things can get any worse for allen than they already are" and then you watch in real time as allen's life falls into further disrepair at a level you'd thought impossible to achieve. and then you repeat this process another 3 times until you arrive at the last chapter hoshino-sensei released, published a year ago
