The Death of Department Stores.

Debenhams has recently announced that it will be going into administration from the 9th April with the possibility of many store closures and job losses.

The store located in Wolverhampton Mander centre has just announced its closure after undergoing a £35 million revamp only 18 months ago - that was set to boost Wolverhampton’s financial market. The store will remain open throughout this year and for the busy Christmas period but are anticipating its closure in 2020. Local MPs were set to save the local store but were shocked and saddened when the news was announced just three days ago. Store manager Rob Hawkins comments ‘unfortunately our store is one of many that will be closing, with being one of the shops that has a low number of customers - we did expect it,’ he wished to make no other comment on the retailers closure.

Debenhams suffered a staggering £491.5 million loss last year and were recently offered £150 million to be brought out by Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley, who’s offer was rejected. The store has now been sold to new company Celine UK NewCo 1, who have offered them £200 million to help them in the future with the remaining stores. The retailer will be closing up to 22 stores and 1,200 jobs will be put at risk. They have released a list of stores that will be closing, which includes the local Birmingham Fort.

The high street is suffering more and more, with the closures of BHS in 2016 after going bust. House of Fraser was next on the list of department stores that were set to go off the market, it went into administration just 8 months before Debenhams, closing 31 of 59 of its stores and suffering 6000 job losses. The retailer was brought out of administration by Mike Ashley with a £90 million deal, who helped save Wolverhampton’s renowned Beatties. This is now a common trend with department stores, with uncertainties looming over who will be hit next.

The only logical reason for the loss in department stores is online shopping, shoppers can now shop on the go due to mobile shopping apps and card details being saved on to phones. ‘We have seen a decrease in footfall since the rise in online shopping, where even half term weeks become quieter and quieter,’ states the store manager of Merry Hill’s Debenhams store, Rachael Jackson. This could also be due to the younger generations new obsession with social media and clothing advertisements being displayed on these websites, causing them to simply just shop online.

So how can this be tackled? A great example of this is the high street retailer - Primark, with the new grand opening of the Birmingham mega store they have found ways of improving their footfall. The new store has two cafes, a barber and a beauty salon, perhaps this is something for other stores to consider that are near the brink of closure. Another main asset that Primark have is the lack of online shopping, they stay offline which helps increase the amount of customers they see in store each week. ‘They would lose money if they had a pure direct to home online offer,’ states Liberum’s Robert Waldschmidt. It is clear that the reason other department stores have faced closure is due to their movement to online sales, where people choose online shopping rather than going out to shop.

Since the major news of these highly regarded stores closures, many others are also on the brink of going into administration such as New Look, Carpetright and Mothercare. Statistics show the harsh reality of how hard going online hits the high street. In store sales had increased by 4.7% in 2017 compared to a huge 15.9% for online only sales, 2018 proved to be a larger increase by 18% for online shopping too. They foreshadow the future for online compared to in-store shopping and can only imagine how the high street will survive the new trend.
