The people of Manchester love Christmas, just as much as you do. Ruben makes it his mission to ensure that you get to see every single Christmas display there is to see.

Christmas was your favourite time of the year; the decorations, the lights, the gifts, the holiday spirit.

You found yourself going all out for the two months. Your boyfriend, Ruben, knew as much. He had been gone for a weekend as they had an away game and when he returned, you had turned the house into a winter wonderland.

Ruben had been a bit preoccupied with the matches, and the training and the final push in preparation for the club world cup but now that you were back home in Manchester and you'd have time for the holidays and yourself, your boyfriend had his mind set on spending time with you and only you for the next week before you're off again.

He had told you to get dressed, given you no clues as to where you were going and gotten into the car with you.

"You're seriously not going to tell me where we're going?" You looked over at your boyfriend and the man shook his head, a smile on his face as he drove.

You hummed along to the music, waiting patiently to see what your destination would be. Imagine your surprise when you realize your boyfriend has taken you to see the Christmas light show you had been telling him about all month.

"You didn't!" You looked over at him, a big grin on your face.

Ruben nods, winding down the window to pay the entrance fee. His free hand rests on your thigh as he drives slowly through the path, letting you take it all in.

This one was winter wonderland themed, much like your apartment, it focused on snowflakes, ice and sparkles with all different shades of white and blue.

You reached over, holding his hand as he drove, you took your photos and off you went again. The two of you were off to dinner, Ruben decided to feed you before you became cranky, which despite his sweet gesture, does happen more often than not.

After dinner, you assumed you were headed home but then Ruben turned up a different street, leading down an empty stretch of road.

"It'd be rather tragic for you to kidnap me before Christmas."

Ruben laughs, "I'm not kidnapping you, babe." He turns into the driveway, following it down to the Disney Christmas lights.

"You didn't!" You shouted at him, squeezing his hand. "This one is always booked! How'd you get tickets?"

"Well Phil took the kids and he knows the owner, he pulled some strings." Ruben tells you as he parks.

You get out of the car, holding his hand as you two walk through the park, Ruben lets you pull him around, showing him all the different characters. You took a million photos, Ruben patiently waiting for you to fix your outfits, change your poses as he took your pictures.

The two of you had made the rounds, holding hands as you wandered about now. "What's with all the sudden Christmas spirit, babe? I know you liked Christmas but 2 Christmas activities in one night? A bit odd for you." You laughed.

Ruben shrugged. "We practically live at the Etihad during the season and I figured we should spend some time together, doing something you'd enjoy."

"I do enjoy watching you play, Rubes." You squeezed his hand, smiling.. "But thank you, this was.. perfect." You turn to him, giving him a kiss.

Warnings: alcohol and the consumption of, the boys are so unhinged - especially john and kyle, ruben's in his vlogging era, sash are sooo over them, broken tables, terrible singing, jack and erling are attached at the hip per usual, reader is ready to go to bed and not deal with them, a few minor injuries.

John’s Christmas parties were famous for being crazy and unhinged, much like their host himself; because who else would end up drunk on a table, singing Christmas carols? 

John's Christmas party was famous amongst the Manchester City players; a night of fun, antics and plenty of booze.

Coincidently, your husband's ideal idea of a perfect night.

It was a week before Christmas and it's nearing 4am. "Are you sure you don't want to wait for him? You'll be alright to get home alone?" You asked Sasha, walking with her to the front door.

The woman nods, "he's not gonna leave anytime soon, I'd be shocked if he was home when I woke up."

Both you and Sasha knew how Jack was, his tendency to party outweighing his logical decisions.

You laughed, giving her a hug. "I'll keep an eye on him, keep him out of trouble. Let me know when you get home, yeah?"

"Of course," she smiles and you watch her walk to her car and get in before you shut the door and rejoin the group in the living room.

The boys who were left; Ruben, Jack, Erling and Kyle, were all drunk and giggling about who knows what. Your husband was pouring another round of shots when you dropped yourself on the couch next to Ruben.

"Tired?" He asks, his fingers tapping along his thigh to the beat of Last Christmas by WHAM that was playing quietly.

"Exhausted."

John comes in, tray in hand as he passes the shots around to the boys. He sits on the arm rest of the couch, his own arm around you. "Cheers! Happy Christmas!"

The seven of you messily attempt to tap your glasses together and down the shots.

At that very moment, it seemed as if the music had bitten your husband. He began singing terribly off key. You groan, slouching back into the couch. "Johnny, please.. don't start."

"Last Christmas I gave you my heart but the very next day you gave it away," he gets up, pointing to you as he sings.

Kyle jumps up from his spot, getting onto the coffee table. "This year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special!" He shimmed along to the music and you can't help but laugh.

John joins his friend on the coffee table, the two of them dancing and singing along; it sounded more like screeching rather than singing. You assume it's the thought that counts.

Before you know it, Jack's up on the couch and singing too.

"Once bitten and twice shy. I keep my distance, but you still catch my eye." He does his little dance, hips popping from side to side.

It seems to have become the Manchester City musical in here because Erling gets up, tv remote in hand as a microphone when he too starts to sing. "Tell me baby, do you recognize me? Well, it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me!"

You roll your eyes, "oh my god."

"Y/n! Y/n! What do you think?" Ruben shouts from behind his phone, the flash on as he points to you - he decided to make a video of their lovely performance.

"It's fantastic, 10/10 truly."

Erling grabs John's arm, leaving Jack to bounce on the couch alone.

"It's not gonna hold, you guys. The table isn't meant for that many-" And before you could finish your sentence, and just as Ruben pans to them, there's a crack and the table collapses in on itself.

"Are you guys okay?" You're out of your seat as fast as they fall on each other.

"Erling!" Jack gets off the couch and helps his friend up.

Ruben is still standing there, phone in hand as he recorded all the chaos. You, on the other hand, help Kyle up and then pull John up off the floor.

It takes you a second to check all of them, making sure the broken glass and wood hasn't nicked them anywhere. Kyle slouched on the couch, Ruben was 'interviewing' him, asking him about his performance and what he thought of it.

Erling was sitting on the floor, his head on Jack's knee while Jack was trying to take a selfie of them.

John was lying on the floor still, next to the broken coffee table.

"I told you the table couldn't hold all of you." You tell them, coming back to put a bandaid on John's wrist. "It was fun though," John mumbles, his arm pulling you down onto his chest.

Kyle gives Ruben a shove, the Portuguese take that as a sign to stop recording. "I'll buy you a new table." Kyle mumbles, taking a sip of his beer that he had left next to the couch.

Technically, it was Erling who broke it, so..." You trailed off, looking at the man who was half asleep.

Erling gives you a thumbs up, "send me the link, I'll buy it."

You can't help but smile as you look around the living room; all you husband's teammates and closest friends were here, all drunk and sprawled out, chaotic as ever.

It's not the holidays without the chaos, is it?

Okay, here we go. This novella is all set in one late afternoon in a local library. It's a fairly simple piece that plays with all kinds of tropes, all the better for fast reading. The best friend's brother, back in town, tattoos are hot, inexperienced and experienced. Look we all know where this novella is going when it starts just now how it is going to get there. And I really enjoyed it. It's just lovely. It's cute and I like the characters. Rudy and Nate both feel human. They both have flaws and insecurities. Rudy is as tattooed as I was hoping. The most important part of their coming together in a way was to do with Rudy's tattoos. At that moment I was Nate, I love tattoos. Sorry tattoos and just exploring them, touching them are like catnip for me in books. Rudy takes great pleasure in Nate enjoying his tattoos and that is a lot for me. Everything just works well. Nate's inexperience is portrayed well as is his caution and adoration for Rudy. I like Rudy's perfect obliviousness to his effect on Nate for a long time. There is little to no Christmas element it is set in a snowstorm that is about it. It's a simple plot that is exactly what it says on the tin. If you like the blurb you will likely enjoy the book. Look it's not going to win any literary award but it is fun while you're reading.

Full disclaimer I am a librarian and this does play a little on librarian kink, I have a lot of issues with the objectification of those in my career. There are two stereotypes for a librarian. The older woman with her twin set and glasses or the sexy librarian short skirt and flirty gaze. This does not mean she is unintelligent she has just weaponised her appearance. But I can deal with it for the sake of a seriously tatted-up tattooist (and it's about time the men got some objectification sorry lads).
