One day King Ravana visits mount Khailash, with the thought of taking Shiva along with him to Lanka forever.

Before meeting Shiva, Ravana encounters Nandi. When Nandi comes to know of Ravana’s wish, Nandi asks him to forget about the thought.

Then Ravana challenges Nandi that, he can lift the entire Khailash mountain along with Shiva and take it to Lanka. Nandi laughs at this, amd immediately Ravana starts to lift the Khailash mountain.

King Ravana with his utmost devotion starts to chant the panchakshari mantra “ Namah Shivaaya “, and the entire Khailash mountain starts to move.

Shiva in order to curb Ravana’s arrogance, presses His toe on the ground, and Ravana’s hands get crushed under the mountain. It made Ravana yelp and yelp, and the sound was so strong that it caused an earthquake.

Lord Shiva lifted his toe, only when Ravana sang one of his famous creation, the Ravana Shiva Stotram or Shiva Tandava Stothram, and gave the name Ravana, one who can shake earth with his cry.

** Actally , few say that Ravana composed the stotram while lifting the Khailash mountain and Shiva pressed his toe, and Ravana hands get crushed. Shiva did this to relieve Ravana’s arrogance.
