2nd May 1844, death of English novelist, art collector, politician and travel writer William Beckford, best known for his gothic novel ‘Vathek’. Composed by Beckford in French, it was translated into English and first published as ‘An Arabian Tale, From an Unpublished Manuscript’, in 1786. Published without Beckford name as the author, the work claimed (in the style of Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto), to have been translated from an original Arabic manuscript. The novel centers on the reign of the Caliph Vathek whose quest for supernatural powers leads to his fall from power. Beckford capitalized on the popular 18th century interest in ‘Orientalism’ and the interest in Eastern cultures. Reproductions of 18th and 19th century gothic literary works are also for sale, made from actual salvaged and repurposed antique books, with original artwork, and reproductions of the title pages. They are also for sale at: www.ofgraveconcern.com/deadpoetsandwriters Follow @ofgrave.concern for more weekly tales from history of the gothic, the strange, and the macabre. #nationalreadingmonth #historicalstories #historicalstory #gothicliterature #darkillustration #illustrationartwork #historicalillustration #gothichistory #gothicfiction #gothicillustration #vintagegothic #vintageaesthetic #fantasmagoria #horrorfiction #bookaesthetic #classicbooks #classicliterature #bookworm #bookaesthetic #bookcover #historicalscene #historicalscenes #darkacademia #regencygothic #williambeckford #vathek #arabiantales #horacewalpole #orientalism https://www.instagram.com/p/CObRZMmHOny/?igshid=1j7v2vrqv54i7

Close encounters of the Medieval kind The 1560’s Swiss & German UFO sightings 28th July 1566, first sightings of black celestial spheres are recorded in the sky battling one another over Basel, Switzerland. Recorded in a pamphlet printed this same year, the event is described as occurring on the ‘27 and 28 of July, and on August 7, against the sunrise and sunset; we saw strange shapes in the sky.’ Further stating of the sun that is ‘took a different shape and color. First, the sun lost all its radiance and luster, and it was no bigger than the full moon, and finally it seemed to weep tears of blood and the air behind him went dark:’. On the 7th of August the black spheres appeared to be battling one another until they turned a fire red and crumbled. A similar event was also reported in April 1561 in Nuremberg Germany, with the accounts mirroring each other with the sighting of a celestial battle of black shapes, with the sun turning to blood. 30th March 1746, birth of Spanish romantic painter and printmaker, Francisco Jose de Goya. The most important Spanish artist and artistic chronicler of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1793 Goya, after suffering from an undiagnosed illness, went deaf, which marked a darker and pessimistic transformation in his work. One theory is that this illness, and the subsequent mental and physical breakdown was caused by lead poisoning from the lead white paint he used extensively in his works; grinding the paint himself in his studio. Goya’s gothic and morbid outlook was also further intensified during the Napoleonic Wars after the French army invaded Spain in 1808, leading to the Peninsular War of 1808–1814. In 1888, Goya was exhumed for burial in France, and upon opening his tomb it was discovered that his skull was missing. 31st March 1837, death of English Romantic landscape painter John Constable, best known for his painting the ‘Hay wain’. Writing in 1821, the same year he completed his most famous painting, he stated "painting is but another word for feeling". In 1829, Constable started teaching landscape painting at the Royal Academy, and became a critique of emerging art movements, such as by the Gothic Revival movement. It is this movement that gave birth to the art of our next notable figure. 2nd April 1827, birth of Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt, who founded the movement with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and John Everett Millais in 1848, having rejected the teachings of the Royal Academy, the movement sought a return to the ideals and symbolism of the medieval period, and observation of the natural world.
