I love love love your analysis on what books Kogami would read and what suits him and why!! Do you think you could do that for a few other characters you’re interested in? I know PP pretty much have most of the major characters having a fave book but I was wondering what other takes you’d have on it since you seem so knowledgable about books

i limited myself to about five books for each of my faves. some characters don’t read books as a hobby but i've just included some here that they would like or at least get a lot out of if they happened to pick them up

tsunemori akane:

akane likes reading game theory and how-to books about detective work, which i know nothing about so just pretend i put credible and good texts about that here. also assume i've included the equivalent of whatever the da vinci code is in their time (bc YES akane will read trash bestsellers)

the scarlet letter by nathaniel hawthorne – hester maintains quiet integrity and dignity while being outcast by a highly repressive community that masks oppression with a face of moral uprightness

antigone by sophocles – antigone provides another good ideal as a proto-advocate for civil disobedience who defies authority in service of what she personally thinks is right

cassandra by christa wolf – the trojan war told through the eyes of cassandra, the seeress doomed to speak prophecies no one would believe. i love tying akane with greek female figures and cass is at the top. she has the power of a sibyl aka can foresee where the future is going, such as her own death, but must live with this knowledge by herself because there would be no good reason to share it

parable of the sower and parable of the talents by octavia butler – sci-fi two-parter about a woman, lauren, who lives in a dystopian corporatist world and adopts a religion/philosophy in which active change and future-forward thinking can combat the passivity and victimization of those prey to society’s failings

out by natsuo kirino – vicious crime novel that centers on four female characters who do vicious things in response to a society that punishes them. i like including natuso kirino in these lists because she’s such a prominent female voice in a genre dominated by men

his dark materials by philip pullman – fantasy series in which a young girl, lyra, the proverbial second eve, “falls” and stabilizes the multiverse through her strong-mindedness, quick wit, intuition and ability to ingratiate herself with fighters who grant her their personal fidelity

ginoza nobuchika:

fathers and sons by ivan turgenev – gino’s favorite book. i've never read this but the title alone is self-explanatory as to why it’s his fave.

the great gatsby by f. scott fitzgerald – narrator helplessly witnesses the downfall of his friend (whom he’s unconsciously in love with) as the latter’s misguided obsession becomes his own undoing

a monster calls by patrick ness and siobhan dowd – a young boy is visited by a monster who tells him three stories to help him process his mother’s sickness and inevitable death

a man by keiichiro hirano – a psychological novel about the smoke and mirrors of identity, authenticity and reckoning with the contradictions between your perceived self/ideal vs. who you really are (and whatever that entails)

autumn by karl ove knausgaard – collected vignettes of reflections/meditations a father wrote to his unborn child and for himself as a sort of affirmation of human existence. it’s a very materialist book in the sense that it focuses on the quotidian details of nature and the every day of life. i can imagine him getting this as a gift from masaoka, letting it gather dust in his drawer and finally picking it up after his father’s death.

masaoka tomomi:

masaoka’s fave is shinjuku shark by arimasa osawa – his interest in crime/detective fiction majorly influenced his career ambitions. (his other favorite detective/crime fiction authors according to the wiki: hideo yokoyama, haruhiko ooyabu, joh sasaki, ranpo edogawa, seishi yokomizo, don winslow, ed mcbain and agatha christie)

les miserables by victor hugo – the ultimate dad!!! this is one of my own personal favorites. you could kill someone just by throwing this book at their head but it remains such a powerful testament to the power of love, redemption and grace even in the most destitute of situations.

the road by cormac mccarthy – haunting story about a father and son surviving the post-apocalypse and the lengths a father’s love will go for the sake of his child.

tokyo ueno station by yu miri – the ghost of a homeless man reflects on his melancholy life post wwii, which, on a broader scope, highlights the systems that enabled his poverty in tragic contrast to the “pure” life of the privileged and powerful.

leaves of grass by walt whitman – i wanted something that would speak to masaoka’s artistic and “old world” side as a painter. whitman frequently visits human individuality and nature in these poems, values which are basically anathema to everything a society mandated by sibyl stands for.

kunizuka yayoi:

sentimental education by kaho nakayama – yayoi’s favorite book about two women who find solace from their loneliness and fulfillment with each other despite external forces trying to keep them apart.

natural woman by rieko mastuura – story about a young woman and her three romantic encounters with other women in its gentle highs and cruel lows. the book explores identity, femininity and queerness in the backdrop of a repressed society.

fun home: a family tragicomic by alison bechdel – graphic novel about a cartoonist who reflects on her discoveries as a lesbian and her dysfunctional relationship with her gay father who killed himself.

carmilla by sheridan le fanu – the precursor to dracula and the better alternative. it has a lesbian vampire! what more can i say

gideon the ninth by tamsyn muir – lesbian necromancers! i’m in the middle of reading this book and it is so much fun

karanomori shion:

shion only reads like their time’s equivalent of “elle” and “vogue” magazine so these are some of my recs for her:

basically everything in kunizuka’s list

works that explore femininity, beauty, psyche, and a woman’s autonomy and relationship to her own body: a streetcar named desire by tennessee williams, hunger by roxane gay, the bluest eye by toni morrison, masks by fumiko enchi, breasts and eggs by mieko kawakami

just for pure entertainment value, here’s some fun gothic about overdramatic people that interweaves the grotesque with the beautiful: the phantom of the opera by gaston leroux, rebecca by daphne du maurier, interview with the vampire by anne rice, wuthering heights by emily bronte

all of my favorite romance novels, which deserve its own post

kagari shuusei:

shuusei only reads manga and possibly novelizations of his favorite video games and movies.

legacy of the force series by troy denning, karen traviss, and aaron allston – i am a normie w this fandom but i asked my friend who is a huge sw nerd and he told me this was one of his favorites in the expanded universe so i assume shuu would like this, too (from the wikipedia, it looks like it’s about an og version of k*lo r*n)

favorite manga: jojo’s bizarre adventure, cowboy bebop, one piece, fist of the north star, gurren lagann, and baccano! (basically any shonen with cool action sequences, heroic protags with impressive powers and most importantly, friendship/found family tropes)

outsiders by s.e. hinton & catcher in the rye by j.d. salinger – these two were the first that came to mind when i thought about how shuu dealt with being labeled a criminal at a young age and how his struggle culminated into his derision against the autocracy of the system and his naturally irreverent and independent spirit

battle royale by koushun takami – social commentary masked with a premise of violence and high octane action about youths forced to fight each other by their fascistic government

shimotsuki mika:

natural woman by rieko matsuura – wiki says that mika’s become interested with matsuura, which is noteworthy since many of matsuura’s books are queer in nature and she’s one of yayoi’s favorite authors. this speaks to mika’s regard (and her baby crush) for yayoi but it also speaks to mika’s own desire to explore her self-actualization as a woman who is attracted to other women

lonely woman by takako takahashi – feel like this is a sister in spirit to out by natsuo kirino, which i included in akane’s list. this one is about the interconnected stories of five women who dream of being feral and unhinged, to say the least. imagine imprisoning and alienating a woman in a depthless pit. what kind of thoughts would pop in her head during the twelfth day of isolation?

we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson – more feral girl rep. there’s something to the “us against the world” relationship between merricat and her sister that speaks to mika’s own relationship with her female friends, who seem to embody purity in a way that mika might feel she’s unable to harness herself (and maybe envies) and needs to protect

foxfire: confessions of a girl gang by joyce carol oates – coming-of-age novel about a high school girl gang in the 1950s who erupt in violence and rage against exploitative and patriarchal systems at large. this book is basically everything mika denigrates out loud but represses and envies internally and completely

my year of rest and relaxation by ottessa moshfegh – hazy book about depression and alienation told through the drugged grief of a (wonderfully) unlikeable woman who is blessed by society yet still feels empty.
