Not an ounce of interest in the zonai. If its not the moon it does not matter to him. Unbothered by current events. Only guy who willingly approaches monsters without a weapon or at least a shield. Takes absolutely no belongings wherever he goes. Somehow ended up in a monster fort that is not easy to get to under normal circumstances. Doesnt think twice about repeatedly risking his life just for his research. Only cooks simple meals. Supposedly knows how to catch fairies. Would probably love a croissant. Blood.

Ahh it breaks my heart to know that eventually we will never see this version of hyrule again and we'll never see any more of these characters... this is all we will get of hino :<

I just think its especially strange that the blood moon only affects him because its not like there arent other npcs who are outside all the time whenever a blood moon happens, and i dont think just observing it all the time would be cause enough for it to actually do things to you. Even monsters dont necessarily act up during a blood moon.

Hino running around the stable during the blood moon
He is honestly pretty fast
Note that he doesnt react to being attacked in any way. He also does not react to monster masks or dark link armor and any other armor that lets you blend in with monsters.

I managed to get in the cage with hino without him standing up! You cant speak or interact with him and he doesnt react to anything.

Saving and reloading puts you back outside of the cage. Youre just not allowed to stay with him in there...

In botw, if it rains during a blood moon hino will stand inside the stable looking angry instead of running around and will still have the same blood moon dialogue

So. An explanation of who hino is. Apologies in advance for the lack of pictures, i dont have access to them at the moment but i will make a better post with all of that in the near future.
Hino is an npc in botw that stayed at the dueling peaks stable. Every day starting at 12pm, he stands outside the stable, thinking to himself. He really likes the moon and is researching the blood moon phenomenon. He tells you what the phase of the moon will be that night. Starting at 10pm, he will start to watch the moon in the sky until 2am, where he'll just stand there looking sad until finally going back into the stable at 3am to sleep until 12pm the next day. He does this every single day. If it rains, he'll stand inside the stable by the entrance and complain about how he wont be able to see the moon in the rain, and he wont tell you what the phase will be if you ask him while it is raining.
During a blood moon, he continues his regular routine until the blood moon starts doing its thing at 11:30pm, where hino will take off running around the stable. If you talk to him, his text is all red, and he will be... very excited, to say the least. Its almost as if hes worshipping the blood moon, but also as if hes just straight up possessed. During this time, his focus seems to be more on the "blood" aspect of the blood moon, which is further emphasized in totk. He even growls sometimes. Its awesome. He doesnt really seem to reguster the fact that you are speaking to him. After the blood moon passes, at around like 12-12:30 ish, he stops running and goes back to his regular spot, completely unaware of how he was just acting (or very much aware and just actubg really normal about it), and will continue to watch the moon as he usually does before once again going to bed at 3am.
In totk, he is no longer at the stable. Occasionally, a newspaper npc will mention a person who was researching the blood moon who was excited to visit a monster fort. In this game, hino is captured at 4 different monster forts (as far as im aware), and a 5th one for a quest at zoras domain. He is still researching the blood moon, but this time hes focusing more on how it revives monsters, and he gets captured because he got too close. He will be sitting inside of a cage behind the boss bokoblin in the fort and will be completely unresponsive to anything going on unless you take the cage off of him (you can put him back in the cage and he'll comment on it too). Saving him will cause him to give you 3 things, the first thing being either salt-grilled meat or mushrooms or fish, the second being sneaky meat and seafood or hasty fish skewer or energizing fish skewer, and then the third thing being hearty elixir, enduring elixir, or fairy tonic (or if your inventory is full he'll give you 20 rupees instead. Also, it seems he will continue to only give you fairy tonic if you still have the previous elixirs that he gave you). He will talk about the phase of the moon and then disappear to another monster fort. Saving him from all of the forts will cause him to disappear entirely until the next blood moon refreshes everything, putting him back into the forts.
When the blood moon starts at 11:30pm and hes still in the cage, he will start to mumble about blood. Honestly, to me he sounds kind of miserable. If you rescue him and speak to him during the blood moon, he will hurriedly give you the 3 items and then.. he will begin reacting physically to the blood moon. He wont run around or anything, but he will start breathing heavily and then it seems like hes in a bit of pain. He will then say one of three things, very excited and possibly agitated, text red once again, and then disappear again. If you speak to him only after the blood happens, he will comment on how it makes him feel alive.
For the zoras domain quest, he doesnt give you the 3 regular items but will instead give you a diamond as a reward. From what i can tell, he doesnt show up at that monster fort again. Unfortunately, i dont have his dialogue for if thats the first time you ever save him or if you save him during a blood moon (or its the first time and its a blood moon)... im gonna have to make. Two extra save files or just one if i do it right just to get that dialogue. And i absolutely will do that, eventually.
Im currently working on getting all of his moon phase dialogue, but im not very good at keeping track of that and you can only save him 4 times before each blood moon, so im not actually sure if i have it all or not.
Through my... stalking him in totk, i figured out you can postpone a blood moon for the next night if you go to the depths and wait in there. The blood moon will not activate at 12am and will instead happen the next night and you can just keep postponing it by going to the depths each time.
Overall, he seems to be fairly different than he was in botw.. my headcanon is maybe the upheaval did something to him. I mean, the blood moon is cooler than ever in totk, so i wouldnt doubt it. Its definitely affected him somewhat. He just seemed a lot calmer and more reserved in botw so its very interesting to see how hes changed a bit, though to be fair he has a lot less dialogue in botw than he does in totk. Hes awesome either way, i used all my travel medallions on 3 of the forts he can be in (since one of the locations is actually in a place that has a shrine) just so i can see him if i ever miss him enough, lol.
Thats my somewhat disorganized summary of hino. Ill make more in depth posts with pictures of his dialogue soon. I just have to get the pictures from my switch first..
I do have this picture
Tumblr media
I was VERY excited when i first found him, but it was before i had my own copy of the game so i had to wait a whole two weeks to see him again.. i was ITCHING to play
Important edit: if its your first time saving him for the ja'abu ridge fort quest, he doesnt give you a diamond. Im currently figuring out what caused him to give me a diamond when i did that quest.

I completely understand hino. Studying the blood moon like that does, in fact, do things to you. I think its completely reasonable for him to act out during a blood moon and not even be aware of it. I get it now.

Now lets pretend hino truly is a werewolf. Just for fun.
Lets say he cant physically transform, for whatever reason. Maybe lycanthropy doesnt work the same in this world. Maybe it isnt a typical case of lycanthropy.
We have the wolfos, and then we have wolves. Botw/totk (ill just say b/t) hyrule has wolves, but no wolfos. The wolfos has appeared in just a few mainline games, debuting in ocarina of time. Wolfos were present in majoras mask as well. Their counterparts, the white wolfos, were also in these two games, but also appeared in twilight princess and spirit tracks, though they were less humanoid in those two games. The case of link becoming a wolf in twilight princess is very different from the concept of werewolves, so we dont have to consider that.
It seems monsters with "fos" in the name are more humanoid, so with that in mind, wolfos may not be simply evil wolves, but a different creature entirely that is simply very semiliar or perhaps closely related.
In totk we're shown that the demon king ganondorf had all sorts monsters around with him, but we dont see some of them in botw. The reason for this is that those monsters were, for whatever reasons, unable to be revived for some time, likely as a result of the demon kings dwindling power and control over the blood moon, as well as caves and the depths being closed off (for further unknown reasons). So because ganondorf was regaining power again, those monsters from the past were able to come back.
The blood moon revives any and all monsters. The blood moon affects ONLY monsters in this case. And yet, here we have hino.
Hino is the one and only person affected by the blood moon at all. Even those afflicted with gloom dont have any sort of reaction to the blood moon. While ganondorf did have control over the blood moons power, it is much more likely that the blood moon had always existed rather than being as a result of him.
Back to the wolfos, b/t does not have wolfos. We have no idea when on the timeline these games take place, but in my personal opinion the best bet is simply after everything else has happened. Perhaps king rauru was the "first" king of hyrule, in the sense that any other hyrule that existed before the zonai was such a long time ago that there was no way of knowing that there were any other hyrules before them. This would likely mean that hundred of thousands of years have passed since, say, zelda II or spirit tracks, whatever would theoretically be the latest in any timeline. In this time, wolfos couldve simply went extinct, or migrated out of hyrule, or evolved into something else, though that isnt likely.
We see that lizalfos have changed significantly since the last game they were in, so why wouldnt a wolfos? Well, maybe wolfos just didnt survive. Perhaps they were outcompeted by regular wolves. Alternatively, the regular wolves ARE technically wolfos, just more closely related to or completely evolved from the white wolfos as seen in spirit tracks and twilight princess, rather than the wolfos seen in ocarina of time and majoras mask.
But now that the demon king has returned and is reviving all of these now ancient monsters, perhaps there were a few wolfos spirits still lingering around after all this time. Eager to return to flesh, to be revived after hylia knows how long theyve been waiting. But it simply never happens. Theyve been gone for far too long, and clearly the blood moon did not occur back then.
So how would one become a werewolf, then? Maybe the ancient wolfos spirits somehow managed to tie themselves to the blood moon, but because their souls are so different from those of the monsters of this era, it didnt revive them. Maybe they had to compromise by taking over someone elses soul, slowly but surely...
After all, this wouldnt be the first time someone slowly turned into a monster as a result of their soul becoming corrupted. It happened in majoras mask. It could be a similar situation, just a slightly different cause.
So, theoretically, if someone was a werewolf in b/t, i believe itd work something like that. Ancient wolfos that cant quite be revived by the blood moon, attempting, whether on purpose or not, to live again by attaching their own souls to another persons soul and slowly and gradually taking them over from the inside out.
As for how this may have happened to hino, and only hino... i dont know. Maybe only one wolfos managed to get this far. Maybe there were more like him in the past, but they didnt survive. Id imagine they wouldnt survive to ever begin to physically transform. Blood moons seemed to be a lot less frequent in the past.
Now the question is, if this was the case, is he doomed? Will he ever be free of the wolfos soul? Will he ever even know whats happening to him?
Theoretically this may be able to be solved the same way it was solved in majoras mask. The song of healing has already worked for a similar case. But i doubt anyone knows that song anymore, or even heard of it.
For now, all we can do is wait.

All 5 hino locations!
The zora's domain sidequest sends you to ja'abu ridge which is to the east of the domain and to the south of tal tal peak. Coordinates are 4155, 0063, 0341. Oddly enough, he seems to not appear here very often, at least for me, and its the only fort that will prompt the "monster forces" boss bar to appear.
Tumblr media
Another location is in the cave where the Maoikes shrine is, inside the boné pond east cave. The shrine is accessible from the inside through a space near the ceiling. Coords are 2273, 0144, 0078
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another location is south of mount gustaf and to the west of lookout landing. Coords are -0925, -0038, 0104
Tumblr media
Another location is south of the popla foothills skyview tower, in farosh hills. Coords are 0573, -2381, 0094
Tumblr media
Last location is is east necluda, right on marblod plain, northeast of the rabella wetlands skyview tower. Coords are 2806, -2251, 0108
Tumblr media
Every fort other than the shrine cave has a korok under a rock on the top of the skull-shaped rock behind the boss bokoblin.
Unfortunately, even if you do save him from all 5 locations before the next blood moon, he doesnt seem to appear anywhere else and you will need to wait for the next blood moon to be able to see him in any of the forts again.

I found something new!! So, i wanted to see if monsters would attack hino because even if you lift the cage when monsters are there, all their attention is on you and they all ignore him. So i just threw a puffshroom and stayed out of sight with hino out of the cage, and it turns out, they DO attack him. He doesnt take any actual damage though, so he never gets knocked out. I felt so bad for him! After i defeated the monster that was attacking him, he said this before i spoke with him:
Tumblr media
He doesnt say that for anything else, as far as im aware. He still had the same regular dialogue afterwards.
