Why does Arrakis have another name? And why is that (native) name the title of the book?

So DUNE (novel)'s wiki page cites a quote where Frank Herbert said he chose the title DUNE because it sounds like "Doom", you know , in line with the ecological message of the books.

In addition, I would like to suggest that DUNE is yet another word that he borrows from Arabic, as with so many other references throughout the saga. Just as FREMEN is a worn down version of FREE MEN I believe DUNE is a time eroded version of DUNIYA. According to Google Translate DUNIYA means world in Arabic, Turkish, Corsican, Swahili, Somali, Twi, Zulu, Hausa, Sanskrit, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, and Yiddish. (I might hv found more instances if I kept on looking.) It seems like a good fit as the Fremen language is full of words with Arabic roots.

Given that Dune is the lesser known name of the planet, it would also make sense to call the novel DUNE if it meant world to Frank. Unless the word DUNE made a big statement (like announcing he's about to give you a whole new world) it makes no sense for Frank to unnecessarily complicate things by giving Arrakis a second name.

Sidenote: the Fremen who initially landed on Arrakis (thousands? of years before the first novel starts) were technicians, scientists, mathematicians, etc who were fleeing the oppression of a slaver- scientist. They couldnt go back to the planet they were captured from and had to make Arrakis their new homeworld out of necessity. In light of that, calling this place their DUNIYA makes sense.

Postscript: there is another layer to the word DUNIYA in that it also refers to the transient nature of the world we live in. In Arabic, it can mean this world as much as it can mean this temporary world. And the original Fremen had initially thought that they would find a way to go back to their home planet and that Arrakis would be a temporary home. So yeah, DUNIYA makes sense in that way too.

W A T C H I N G

I saw the 1984 version, but it was confusing to me.

I liked 'Dune' & 'Children of Dune' on SyFy channel in the early 2000s, also confusing, but more epic and colorful scale. But I can never find the DVDs of it, and the ones out there are expensive beyond ridiculous pricing!

And Denis Villeneuve is such a visionary, it's still rather 'alien' to understand. But it's very compelling story.

Dun-dun-DUNE (2021)

The novel, Dune, by the author Frank Herbert released in 1965 with a total of 6 books has always been a challenge for any director who wants to bring these novels onto the screen. With huge layers of political and religious meaning, through fifty years since the first version of Dune on screen released in 1964, the movie world still can’t find a version of Dune that would successfully satisfy fans of the novel around the world. But under the magic hand of the director Denis Villeneuve, Dune part one came out last year and is one of the most expected science fiction movies by sci-fi fans. 

For me one of the most important aspects of a successful science-fiction movie is the CGI and the visual effects, and this is the part that Dune has done very well. The movie is a show for the eyes and it would be really sad if you can’t enjoy Dune in the theater. The Arrakis planet covered in sand dunes appeared very realistic and graphic. The contrast between the light and the dark from the Atreides and the Harkonnen also appear very clearly helps the audience distinguish the bad side and the good side. The camera angles in the movie are also on point, the broadview angles really extract the beauty of the planets and the close ups make the emotions of the characters appear clearer. 

I have to give credit to director Denis Villeneuve and his crew for making every scene of the movie very beautiful and also making the audiences believe that it’s Dune but not some kind of desert on Earth. The normal scenes interleaved with the scenes from Paul Altreides dreams create a thrilling and adrenaline-inducing atmosphere where the audience can see what’s going to happen in the future for the Altreidies. Although Dune is a science fiction movie it also has some really cool action scenes, the explosions, the wars, especially the close combat scenes where all the characters have the protecting shields makes it very satisfying to watch and brings entertaining moments to the audiences. The effects and the cinematography reminds me of some of Christopher Nolan’s movies like Interstellar. 

A thing I do not understand is why they kill off so many characters of color. Within half of the adaption, almost all the characters of color have died: Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), Dr. Wellington Yueh (Chang Chen), Jamis (Babs Olusanmokun), Shadout Mapes (Golda Rosheuvel), and Dr. Liet Kynes (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) (and Zendaya’s character, Chani, will eventually be killed off as well if they decide to follow the plotline in the book series). I don’t think this is a very smart choice considering the racial political message it sends. Even though the director has said that this movie is a critique of many racist tropes on the silver screen, I am still unable to see how he has trying to portray his commitment to subvert these discriminatory tropes.  

With the attendance of lots of Hollywood stars like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya or Oscar Isaac, the acting in this movie is really good and all the actors gave an amazing performance, especially the chemistry between Rebecca Ferguson and Timothée Chalamet really brings out the love between the two characters. But again, my criticism of the death of characters of color still stands. Hopefully, it will get better in the subsequent movie.

Estudió en Cowles Art School en Boston, donde ganó una primera beca en Ladies Life Classes en 1888, así como con William Merritt Chase y John LaFarge en la Art Students League de Nueva York en 1890.

En 1890, Ganó el Premio Dodge que otorga la Academia Nacional al mejor cuadro pintado por una mujer estadounidense de cualquier edad. El cuadro ganador, titulado Un interludio a Chopin, se perdió desde entonces.

Viajó a Europa periódicamente entre 1890 y 1895, pintando junto a su padre en Inglaterra, Irlanda y Escocia, y estudiando en la Académie Julian de París.
