Okay so the new Aladdin was great.
Spoilers ahead tho
The cast is my biggest qualm. No one was hot enough lol. I know that sounds creepy but like... they weren't.
Also the ages were off. Part of jafars evilness was that he was a pedophile but that actor didnt look much older than jasmine or Aladdin. Also the genie was supposed to be like...cool dad/uncle type not best friend type idk. The genie is obviously centuries old but he should've seemed way older than Aladdin.
I wasnt a fan of them adding dahlia. Why is one single white woman here? And why was she talking so funny?? Like maybe she was going for an accent but did it poorly. Her voice just..cringe. her existence seemed...unnecessary. but I guess they gotta give the genie an unnecessary love interest because only then can a person be truly happy? I understand that also she was a female confidant for jasmine which okay go off it probably would look weird to have a young woman just you know talking to her tiger like in the original lol. But I'm still not a fan of dalia being there at all. Maybe if she wasnt weirdly white. And maybe if her character wasnt annoying. Maybe if she added something. But she really didnt.
I have such a beef with the genie becoming human and losing his powers. Also....having kids with the random new character?? Nah. Genie was a free spirit who had ultimate cosmic power. He was an ace icon. (I'm totally joking but I feel like having single characters who have a happy ending while single are so important)
Jasmine man.... she wasnt sassy enough for me. She wasnt angry enough for me. And they cut the infamous "I am not a prize to be won!" Like...ugh. however they gave her more lines and story and songs which..homegirl deserves. And they made HER sultan. Fuck yeah. Best addition i could've asked for. But I feel like a lot of that character was sass and allure and anger and I didnt get enough of that in the new movie.
Aladdin...wasn't as likeable as cartoon Aladdin. I cant place what was off but.. idk.
I was kinda disappointed on the cave of wonders...it was a little lackluster.
And jasmine and Aladdin's dynamic wasnt the same. They cut the first "do you trust me?" which is the only reason the second "do you trust me?" is significant.... like..the parallel was the reason that line was significant and why jasmine found out, without the first line the second line is irrelevant. And they also cut out when jasmine says "well it's not that strange" playfully nudges him on the carpet watching fireworks which was an iconic scene.
They cut out the "I wish for jasmine to fall madly in love with me" scene too. I can understand how creepy that would be irl so I'll get past it but I think it was important to show how scum jafar was. And how smart jasmine was to play along to help. They kind of did something similar but it didnt work as well. Iago wasnt as funny or enjoyable:/ ik a real parrot has limitations but :/
Also...the fuckin sand timer shit. They got rid of that! Which I thought was weird as hell.
And the most heartbreaking of all.... no "Rick em rack em Rick em rake stick that sword in to that snake" I was upset.
I'm trying not to be too hard on will Smith because cartoon genie was an icon. And animation has no bounds basically. A lot of the original genies humor was dependent on magic and couldn't be done with real people. Plus it was Robin Williams....cant compete. To me they are just...not the same type of actors. They dont have the same humor or vibe. I like will Smith but hes too cool almost. I applaud him for taking on this role and I do actually think he did good but no one would have been able to fill Robin's shoes. No one. Will Smith's genie was good as long as you don't compare to the original. That's true for the movie too.
I know I contradicted myself but saying it was great then immediately talking about everything I didnt like lol but it was good! It was so pretty. They didnt totally whitewash it. They even added a lot of Arab stuff that felt more Indian (I'm not sure about the accuracy) but felt authentic. Dancing and music and whatnot. And they mentioned the dead queen (gotta love walt and his mommy issues). They added a bit more feminist undertones. They gave jasmine intellectual interests which was a plus. But the best thing they updated was making jasmine sultan. It was truly an iconic twist and I loved it. She knows what she's doing. She got this. I fuckin loved that so much.
