Why did you join the military? And how do you feel about that now as someone with radical beliefs? You don’t have to answer of course I’m just curious

i had just finished being a D1 runner/heptathlete and i didn’t want to get a real job. being an “adult” had no appeal to me at the time (i had barely begun to accept that i had to let go of my identity as a trans man).

it was a good time for a while. i have never had so many female friends as when i was a soldier. strong women in general, and lesbians in particular, have long been attracted to the military for that reason: finding each other.

when the order came for my unit to deploy to afghanistan, some inner voice told me “don’t go. you have no mission there.” so i petitioned to be released from active duty instead.

i can’t really understand what we’re doing in iraq and afghanistan. and if i can’t understand something, i can’t just blindly accept it… not anymore.

i know the us military has left behind an off-balance political situation in those countries, as well as copious amounts of toxic waste that will continue to give the citizens of those countries cancer. i can’t accept that, either.

i guess it’s hard to sum up how i feel about my time in the service. not particularly proud. but not ashamed. i suppose i got what i could from it, and then i left.
