"My lord infante... I must inform you... We discovered the child you've been searching for... But there is an issue... He seems to have encased himself in a glass implement--"
"a bong, yes, I am familiar"
"indeed, lord infante. We fear the wyvern project shall be trapped there forever..."
"not to worry," the Lord infante said, and grinned through the enormous amount of flesh. "I shall simply have to... Smoke him."

sy faces his toughest challenge yet: suburbs
Tumblr media
this is legitimately insightful commentary good job wildbow! the effects of political domination on culture!
Tumblr media
if it'd been written a hundred years earlier this might've made it into some minor piece of critical theory as a tongue-in-cheek aside. freud says that the shape of the psyche mirrors the shape of a city insofar as its built on top of ruins, ruins which may not readily present themselves but which nonetheless inform behavior and mood. this is why the baron's (much like so many american cul-de-sacs) and their eerie prefab architecture are conducive to a certain lonely, hollow dread: they lack some fundamental human quality. the sadism with which it was created seeps into its citizens. a stitched city 👌 what an evil idea

This is an important message that needs to get out to the lord infante!
there is a mauerist insurrection in new amsterdam. the first faction that kills 100 nobles, gets to take over the city. you NEED to be careful, lord infante. you could be at high risk because of your high status. PLEASE be safe, everyone in our around new amsterdam, and please reblog this to get it to the nobles in new amsteradm.
i just worry about their safety.
please stay safe fontypoo! <3

sy's descriptions of being horny are like descriptions of being in a medieval torture device lmao

Twig Liveblog for Arc 14
lots of crazy shit happened in this arc it was so good!! first of all it's so psychedelic. the lambs talking about sylvester in the third person while he just sort of mopes around, barely alive--really a terrifying section. the city of new amsterdam provides quite the psychedelic backdrop too, with pulsing walls and living buildings.
and it's got so many cool nobles!!! i love the infante so much, you all have no idea. greatest wildbow character of all time. and then my second favorite wildbow character of all time (the god mauer) shows up too... and then the two queens face off... we're truly spoiled. this arc has probably some of the best Mauer Moments™ so far. he fucking slits syvette's throat what a badass. his encounter with augustus the noble was kind of beautiful--we see mauer's drive and doubt and determination in one fatal moment. even if mauer commits the most evil acts of all time i'm still ride or die for him.
the time spent as evette was insane--sy's psyche, which has been splitting since the death of jamie, has its most dramatic fracture yet. i find it fascinating the way sy's identity exists only in relation to the other lambs. sy is sy only insofar as he is not helen, gordon, lillian, etc. and when the equilibrium is disrupted, sy cannot really be himself. the lambs are like one organism it's so evil to split them up!!! i think the sequence where evette has her heart outside her body is a metaphor for this idea. i mean they did it to themselves here lol but i guess it's just part of sy's Journey. twig is so existentialist. sy must create himself.
my favorite part of the arc was mauer taking evette to The Block. it felt like something out of true detective. we get a kind of answer at the end of the arc, but there is still so much mystery. i'm such a sucker for conspiracy thrillers involving the abuse of children. such haunting context, too.
and then right after they talk about the child trafficking jessie comes out lmao. so sweet!!!!!!!! the love between jessie and sy is so pure and beautiful it makes my heart race. they understand each other so deeply and fundamentally and intimately. they must kiss imminently!!!!!!!!!!
the interlude with lillian made me want to be an academy student so bad even though it seems so awful lol. it's like "the magicians" i just want to escape into the evil fantasy school. then the infante shows up again let's fucking goooooo. he's very mean to lillian and the lambs but that is his right. i'm also very intrigued about the idea of giving wyvern to the duke, but i would root heavily against him in his quest to harm the infante. i only liked the duke before i knew about the infante, and now that i know there is a larger, more powerful noble, the duke is basically a stupid maggot to me who must be squished more.

Twig Liveblog for Arc 1
i have finished the first arc of john c mccrae's "twig" 😮
so far i am enjoying it far more than i anticipated!! wildbow's prose, while still clunky, is far from the worst it's ever been, and i'm willing to tentatively admit that he seems to have an uncharacteristic respect for pacing and structure here (...which he would forget by his next project, but that's beside the point).
more importantly: sy is my fucking guy! i've decided that even if he commits wholly unjustifiable acts in the coming arcs i will defend him at all costs. i would lay my life down for this bratty horny munchkin. (very exciting to have a wildbow character who feels romantic and physical attraction to other people, by the way: i really loved that scene where the schoolgirls sort of neg him a little bit and he can't help but stare at their legs and press his face into their chests). i find myself loving him for the same reasons i first loved taylor: the burning hatred for authority, the anti-social tendencies (very funny interaction where lillian says to him that she dislikes being called "lil" and sy proceeds to refer to her as lil internally like five times in the next paragraph lmao).
i love all the other creatures and characters! the psycho vat-grown girls are entertaining. excellent first interlude. i love the setting, all wet and hot, smelling of excrement and rotting bodies.
PREDICTIONS (or, embarrassing myself for your entertainment)
i think there are too many pointed references to gordon having a "hidden dark side" for it not to come to a head at some point, but maybe that's too easy
mary and sy will kiss 🥺
helen will experience a crisis of loyalty that she is unequipped to handle

Twig Liveblog for Arc 5
omg good arc! maybe my fav so far. it actually reads like a proper spy novel. the lambs are really in their element--it feels like the previous missions have been training, this is the real deal.
the little thematic threads feel increasingly coherent, thanks to a very organized presentation here. the humors assassins are a great antagonist because they're such perfect foils. it comes more apparent than ever, through their conflict, that the lambs are closer to components of one larger projects, rather than discrete individuals--this is why it's so heartbreaking in that "intervention" scene (amazing scene btw, i like sy at his most messy, catty, queeny, etc.), when he fights back against the idea that he's been somehow "influenced" by the other lambs.
i also like the plague men--another very potent reminder that the lambs are themselves disfigured, though not quite so obviously. the plague men, though, are of course voluntary subjects: they have something they really believe in, a cause beyond themselves--unlike the lambs. perhaps this is what prompts the questions later on regarding whether they're really okay operating like this. LIVING STITCHED !!
gordon's premonition of expiration, for lack of a better term, is another interesting knot. it's his "death drive" flaring up, maybe also exacerbated by the presence of shipman. the detail about him previously being more rebellious was so heartbreaking--like he's been beaten into submission. my poor babies... it feels like they're so close to death and despair at all times 😭 they deserve better!!
PREDICTIONS (or, embarrassing myself for your entertainment_
gordon will die first (yeah, dummy, he's the oldest, yeah i know but it feels pretty perfect, days away from defection kinda thing)
sy will manipulate mary into being more anti-academy and then feel guilty (it is kinda strange that mary is among the more pro-academy--something about the grass being greener maybe)
