Today is World Photography Day, and I think of how I have been inspired by my Uncle Jack. The son of a Welsh coal miner who brought his family to America in 1911, Jack Wilkes was hired by LIFE magazine and sent to China during World War Two. My childhood bedroom had Peter Pan characters on one wall and an 11x14 silver print above my bed of a Chinese soldier eating a bowl of rice. My grandmother’s favorite brother, my Uncle Jack died when I was nine, and I believe my grandmother encouraged my photography to compensate in a small way, the loss of her brother. So many great photographers have helped me see the people of the world with heart and eyes open; I’m grateful it began with the image of a man eating a simple meal, on the other side of the Earth. When my Uncle Jack Wilkes first went to China as a photographer for LIFE Magazine he was in his mid-twenties. I often think how many things he saw before he was 30. One of the customs of Christmas Day after @vickiknits blueberry stratta and coffee, is to call relatives and catch up. Sons and daughters and my father had their turns, and then I spoke with my Uncle Jack’s daughter. Jack was a photographer for @life magazine in China during World War Two and his daughter Jackie is now 81. Sometimes conversations head sideways and today Jackie asked me if I knew how her father had lost his right thumb? This is not unusual for Holiday talk in my family, so I told her I would check on the early photographs I had, to try and get an idea when he lost his thumb, if not how. The first photograph is Jack in China in 1945, thumb clearly missing its tip. The second image is Jack as a Scout, and it looks like his thumb is complete as he holds his walking stick. Vicki reminded me with a very ominous look that my mother also was missing the end of an index finger. I’m not too concerned, but may sleep with gloves on tonight. If you made it this far, I posted a snap of the stratta just to take the edge off the rest of the story. Happy Christmas! In 1938 my Uncle Jack made a 16mm movie of his father, my great-grandfather. John Wilkes was a coal miner from the Rhondda Valley in Wales, who emigrated to work in the mines of Illinois in 1911.
