He bleeds red.

Objectively Knives has always known; he's bled before. It's only now that the knowledge scratches at his mind, burrowing between synapses to mock him.

He bleeds human red. (Vash had bled human red, puddling on the floor beneath his body seeping the life out of him even as he pointed the gun at Knives and told him no–)

His eyes trace its path from arm to needle to tubing and into vials that are swapped and packed carefully away. He doesn't bother following its path from there, into the back rooms of the doctor's laboratory. Knives doesn't know where it goes from there, and honestly doesn't care–doesn't want to know. Barely tolerates this small invasion as it is, and further knowledge would do nothing to soothe his temper.

"Idiot," Zazie hisses against his ear softly, the soft susurration of worm scales scraping over each other as they twisted around themselves in agitation a sufficient distraction. "You come to us for protection only to place yourself in the jaws of a scavenger anyway. Fool child."

Knives does not flinch at the accusation. It's an accurate summation regardless, and he dips his chin briefly in acknowledgement of the truth.

"He requires bone this time," Knives says finally, staring up at the blank ceiling; there's a question buried in the words even though he does not ask outright. Zazie sighs quietly, the sound aged.

"Foolish child," they repeat. "He will never be satisfied with what you give, child. He is a scavenger. The doctor will eat and eat and eat until he has bloated himself upon your corpse and there is nothing left to feast upon. Do not trust scavengers, Knives."

But Zazie does not leave.

mickey can be a bit possessive when it comes to relationships; this applies to all of his relationships, but romantic ones in particular. as a result he's also prone to jealousy, though he's fairly good at keeping himself in check when it comes to possessive and/or jealous behaviors. the possessiveness in particular is born mostly out of a protective nature so it's really the jealousy that's a problem.

related to this headcanon, and a thing i posted on the old blog at some point but apparently never posted here;

Leanne's got a minor genetic defect in her eyes; this is why she's so bad at spells. She physically sees less magic than actually exists, and as a result tends to pull more magic into her spell circles than is needed, which overloads them and is why she fails at magic so often.

Without this problem, she's very talented at magic just like her mother, but bc it's gone undiscovered and has affected her use of magic for her entire life she and everyone she knows thinks she's just. Bad at magic spells.

In worlds where there's less magic than her own, she's far better at magic simply by virtue of being unable to overload her spells.

the secret to understanding knives is in listening for what he doesn't say, and in how he words what he does.

he's very blunt and straightforward most of the time (unless he's trolling, then he'll be as cryptic as possible to be an asshole), and his word choice tends to be deliberate. a lot of what knives doesn't say often means more than what he does. other times, how he says something matters more than people think it does–an example is during the memory dive, Vash asked if Knives had ever cared for Rem and his answer was that he "can't say it stood out."

He did not say he never cared for her.

Because he did. Does. But it's complicated and tangled and not something he wants to look at too hard, but he also couldn't lie to Vash about it.

And this is typical of him. He's not comfortable revealing his soft, vulnerable insides anymore, not the way he was as a child so instead he talks around, through, over subjects he doesn't want to address and expects people to read the answers in his silence or in the way he answers, rather than in the words themselves.

this can be a problem for people who don't know how to communicate with him, or don't understand when he is actually trying to have an honest conversation in the spaces between words.

born roughly 50 years after the big fall from one of the july plants; knives finds her and takes her in himself to prevent her from falling into human hands

has never left the complex where knives kept/raised her before july's lost

has met various gung ho guns/eye of michael members a few times but she doesn't really interact with any of them except zazie who is the only one knives trusts as a babysitter, and legato tho her interactions with legato are usually very brief

plays around with pronouns to see how she likes them but usually prefers feminine pronouns, they "feel nice"

she's never met vash until he finally comes to july but she does know of him thru the plant hivemind

wolfwood's her favorite non zazie human of all the people working for knives. he's interesting. also once gave her a lollipop

glitterbugs are a type of magical firefly on leanne's world; like fireflies they swarm at night in the warmer months, and light up as part of their mating displays.

unlike fireflies however, they also leave trails of actual glitter in the air when they fly at night when they're lit up, thus the name glitterbug.

while fireflies blink in and out at a rapid pace and are a sort of yellow-green range of color, glitterbug lights are constant as a steady, slow pulse-rate and glow a soft pastel blue or purple depending on which particular subspecies you're looking at.

they're native to ivalna, as a magical species of insect. there's some question of whether they're a natural magic adaption of an already existing species of firefly, or if they're a completely man-made species created through magical means. there's no records of them being created, but since all magical records pre-ivalna no longer exist outside of word of mouth this doesn't really mean much
