Jake Seresin used to think he had no regrets in his life. Every time he was close to feeling as if that were so, the universe found a way to turn it around and prove to him that he made the right choice. Choosing to go to USC for instance, instead of staying in his home state of Texas, he thought was the biggest mistake he had made in his life. Then USC led him to Delta Chi where he made lifelong friends, and ultimately he met you. So no, Jake Seresin had no regrets in life. Yet as he sat under the fluorescent white lights of the sterile hospital waiting room, Jake was able to think of one.
All the days passed by in a blur, with Jake finding himself in a robotic routine that helped him get through the day:
Wake up
Go to class
Eat
Do not think about Ace
Nap
Eat
Do not think about Ace
(attempt to) Sleep
It wasn’t the healthiest of routines, but it was enough to keep him surviving. At least until he began receiving your texts. Your apologies and declarations of love made him weak, making it much harder for him to stand his ground and give himself the space that he told himself he needed. With each passing day, he found it harder to convince himself that space is what he actually wanted. So he silenced your notifications. The bright red badge continued to grow in number and it took all of his power to not give in and click your contact.
By the fifth day, Jake thought he was actually doing pretty well. He was even studying for his finals and going to every single one of his study groups that you had suggested he try. Even as one thing or another always led back to a reminder of you, his self control was much more restrained and he felt just a little bit lighter.
Jake missed you like hell, that was for sure. But maybe this fight was a sign for him to work on himself. To be better not just for you, but for himself as well.
So he did what he thought was best by pulling a page from your book and choosing to throw himself into his work. He shut everyone out, refusing to go to any outings with Javy and the gang. He didn’t answer his phone and barely left his room other than to go to classes or use the bathroom. Jake ignored the fact that in doing so, he was neglecting his physical and mental health. In turn, making this coping strategy of his more harmful than good. While he thought his obsession with his isolation and studying was “making himself better,” he didn’t realize that the only thing he was really doing was actively avoiding the problem at hand.
But as day seven rolled around, Jake’s fake it till you make it attitude came crashing down. Upon returning back to his and Javy’s shared room in the Frat House after his final exam, Jake fell onto his bed and finally let himself feel.
Jake Seresin has never felt so alone. After days of avoiding, he gave himself permission to think about you–to miss you. Remembering the last time he saw you and the last moment you shared, he could feel the tears that began to gather on his lash line. Too tired to hold it in, he let his emotions go. He let the sobs and cries for help he has been burying in his chest break free. He was tired, so damn tired, of pretending like everything was okay. Like he was okay.
He wanted someone to notice that something was off with him, that something happened to make him feel absolutely miserable in his own skin. However, everyone was too caught up in their own whirlwinds of final exams, studying, and relationships to notice that Jake was struggling to stay afloat without his life preserver–without you.
His heart ached and longed for you. Your voice, your touch, your love. If he could take it all back he would. He would’ve come back to you without a second thought. Jake would have gathered you in his arms and sat with you all night long until the two of you could work it out. Because he wasn’t Hangman anymore. He wouldn’t leave you out to dry. Yet somehow he managed to do exactly that.
With the only thing on his mind being you, he finally mustered up the courage to read all of the texts you had sent him days prior. The first few made his heart ache, reading your heartfelt apologies and declarations of love was enough to make him start crying all over again. Teary eyed smiles graced his features at your small anecdotes and pictures of things that reminded you of him.
He could hear your voice and see your mannerisms in his head at each text he reads through.
Jake’s euphoria is interrupted by the fifth call he has received from Natasha. He rolls his eyes before immediately declining her call. Nat probably finally talked to you about what happened and he figured she was calling to rip him a new one. He definitely wasn’t in the mood for that right now.
His smile grows as he scrolls through his phone, especially at the photo of a golden retriever you saw on campus that “looked like him.” A playful scoff leaves him at that as he imagines the way you would’ve jumped up and down on the tips of your toes, clutching onto his arm, as you justified how he was a golden retriever in human form. This was the closest he felt to you in days and he wished for it to never end.
Jake continued on, savoring every good night and “I love you” text, every apology, and every good luck you wished him on his exams. Though one series of texts was enough to have the fullness in Jake’s heart flushed empty. He reads them over and over again, praying that he read them wrong.
I failed my exams, Jake. I don’t know what to do.
His heart skips a beat.
I can’t go home this summer. I won’t. I can’t face my parents, they’ll hate me forever.
But the worst of them all, the one he begs was a prank being played on him by the universe read: I’m taking your silence as a sign that I’ve fucked us up beyond repair. I love you, Jake Seresin, even if you no longer love me.
He’s going to be sick. Sure he was mad, but he never wanted you to ever think that he didn’t love you anymore. That was just a statement that could never be true. Jake was done wallowing. He was done making you both suffer because he wasn’t man enough to confront you. Swallowing his fears and his pride, he begins formulating a text to ask you to meet him at The Hard Deck–somewhere familiar, though not too intimate just yet.
He’s about to press send when a phone call from Javy interrupts his screen. Jake instantly presses decline, however, he barely has another second before Javy’s name pops up again.
With an agitated sigh, Jake finally answers the phone, swearing up and down that whatever he was calling for better be something good. “The hell you want, Javy?”
“Jake–” he starts.
“Look, I’ve been getting calls from Nat all day and I’m assuming that’s why you’re calling me right now,” Jake vents. “But I really, really don’t have time for a lecture from either of you right now, man.”
“Jake.” Javy’s voice shifts into something more somber, more serious. “Ace’s been in an accident.”
It’s as if his feet have processed the information long before his brain did. Jake blacks out, barely recognizing the actions in which he’s pulling on his shoes and rushing out of his room and into the common living area.
The air is knocked out of his lungs, forcing him to grasp for leverage on the edge of the table. Jake can hear Bradley asking what’s wrong but all he can focus on is Javy’s breathing, the sound of people rushing around in the background. The phone slips from his hand and he feels like his entire rib cage is caving in on itself, crushing his heart. Black spots swim on his vision and there’s a hand on his chest telling him to breathe.
“Come on, Seresin,” Bradley’s voice comes through. “Breathe.”
A heavy exhale escapes him as he desperately tries to catch his breath. He’s muttering an incoherent string of words, stumbling his way through the room and trying to get to the front door.
Bradley is right on his tail, yanking on his own pair of shoes and grabbing the phone that Jake haphazardly dropped on the floor in the middle of his attack. “You gotta tell me what’s going on, man, you’re scaring me.”
Jake abruptly stops at the front door, turning to look at Bradley over his shoulder with something worse than heartbreak in his eyes. He doesn’t say anything more other than, “Ace. It’s Ace.”
That’s all Bradley needs to hear before he’s grabbing the car keys from Jake’s hands and dialing Javy’s number back into Jake’s phone.
Jake could hardly remember when he got to the hospital, let alone how he was able to navigate himself to get to the ER without help when the only thing on his mind was you. He couldn’t even recall what Javy had said about the extent of your injuries, just that you were still unconscious from the car accident.
Upon reaching the ER Jake saw Nat sitting in the waiting room with her head in her hands while Javy sat beside her and gently rubbed a comforting hand up and down her back.
Bradley and Jake’s heavy footsteps alert the couple. Nat’s head shoots up, her red rimmed and teary eyes locking on Jake’s. She’s storming over in seconds, pushing at his chest angrily.
“Why the hell didn’t you pick up your phone?”
“Nat–” he starts, only to be silenced with another harsh shove. He takes the brunt of the hit, knowing he deserved every single one and worse. “I’m sorry.” Jake winces at how pathetic he sounds.
Natasha shakes her head with disappointment clouding her features. “Sorry isn’t gonna fix this.”
Javy joins the group, nodding at Bradley as he gestures for him to sit down. He places a hand on Jake’s shoulder asking him to do the same. He only brushes Javy’s hand off, taking a step closer to Nat.
“Is she…is she okay?” He braces himself for the worst. Jake’s heart beats so fast against his ribcage that he swears he could feel the muscle begin to ache.
Natasha inhales shakily before collapsing into the nearest seat. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?” The fear in his veins begins to mix with annoyance and fury. The rational side of him knew he shouldn’t be mad at Nat, but the only thing occupying his thoughts was the idea of you not being okay. Having to hear that you were in the hospital was already bad enough. He doesn’t think he could take anything more.
“I mean, I don’t know!” Nat’s voice rises with that same frustration and fear. “All the lady on the phone said was that she was in a car accident with four other people from our school. From what I understand, the others made it out okay, but the car that t-boned them…” Her voice wavers, recalling the words she heard earlier that evening and imagining the worst. “The other car hit Ace’s side head on. She took most of the impact. The other four made it out okay with barely any scratches.”
Jake’s hands are shaking as he braces them on his knees, desperate to catch his breath. He didn’t realize his knees had hit the floor until he felt the sting from the solid ground. But he didn’t have it in him to care about anything other than you right now. Jake desperately tries to piece everything together from your texts from the night before but nothing was making sense. Everything he was trying to understand came out between shallow breaths. “Where did she go? Why was she out so late? Who was she with? Why weren’t any of you with her?”
“Jake,” Bradley interferes, squeezing his shoulder as a gentle reminder to breathe.
Jake catches the way Javy clenches his jaw from the corner of his eye which has him demanding answers. “Javy.” There was something his friends weren’t telling him, making the searing hot anger in his blood begin to boil.
Nat saves her boyfriend by giving up the information for him. “Before you get upset, you need to understand that she didn’t tell any of us where she was going. None of us had really seen her lately and just assumed she was stressed out from finals. We didn’t think things were this bad.”
“What aren’t you guys telling me?”
“Jake,” Javy starts cautiously. He kneels down beside his friend, speaking nice and slow, almost like he was conversing with a child. “If we tell you, you have to promise to stay calm.”
He scoffs in disbelief, rolling his eyes at his best friend. “How do you think I’ll be able to stay calm? I just found out my girlfriend has been in an accident and no one wants to tell me what the hell is going on!”
“Javy, just tell him. He deserves to know,” Bradley sighs.
“Damn right, I deserve to know. I’m her boyfriend!” Jake’s seething as he gets up and starts pacing back and forth. People are beginning to stare but he doesn’t give a damn.
It’s Nat’s turn to grow agitated. “Really? Because last I heard the two of you were on a break.”
“Wait, what?” Javy looks at his best friend in bewilderment.
Nat shoots him a look that says, I’ll explain it all later.
“Doesn’t matter if we were on a break or not. She’s still my girl and I need to know what happened.”
The conviction in his tone and the strength on his face are enough to make Javy and Nat cave. Hiding this from him would only make things worse than they already were.
Nat doesn’t dare to meet Jake’s eye as she says, “She was with some Alpha Sigs and their girlfriends. Everyone in the car was intoxicated. Even the guy at the wheel. They were coming from the Alpha Sig house. I don’t know what the hell they were doing in a car like that but I know the Sigs are in interrogation with the police right now.”
Bradley clenches his fist. “Those bastards.”
“Ace was the only one whose condition was critical.” The word critical falls short on her tongue, being whispered into the tense atmosphere.
Jake’s silence is unnerving. They were expecting an outburst of some sort. Some screaming, maybe even some physical aggression yet not of it came. The sound that fell from Jake’s lips was worse than anything they could’ve imagined.
It was as if everyone in the room heard his heartbreak as he was unable to control the tears that fell from his eyes. The feeling of overwhelming guilt rushed over him at the realization that he should have been there. That this was all his fault. You would have never humored the idea of an Alpha Sig party in the first place if the two of you had just talked everything out. But you weren’t thinking straight, and neither was he, leading the both of you towards the path of least resistance. Instead, Jake had to be stubborn and sensitive. He couldn’t just man up and admit that you were more important than his ego and pride.
Nothing matters to him anymore upon his epiphany other than needing to see you. You were the only one that could help him.
“I need to see her,” he says through nasally breaths.
During Jake’s spiral, Nat had let tears of her own fall. “They’re not letting any of us see her right now. Just family.” The last part tastes like acid on her tongue.
“We’re her family. They need to let me see her,” he begs. Jake remembers you telling him that he and your friends were truly the only family you have ever known.
“Biological, Jake. We can’t. Not until her parents get here.” She doesn’t even try to hide the scowl on her face.
“Well, where the hell are they?” Jake questions.
“Bora Bora? Or was it Barbados? I have no fucking clue. The nurse said it sounded like they were more upset about their vacation being cut short than their own daughter being in the hospital.”
Jake hates that he wasn’t too surprised to hear that. How ironic that the real people you considered family were here and yet they wouldn’t even let them see you.
Jake swallows, trying his best to ignore the stickiness of his throat. “Then I guess I’m staying here until then.”
Javy, Natasha, and Bradley share a look of uncertainty at his words. Certainly, it wasn’t healthy for him to be there all day and all night waiting for your parents to get there. It was Jake’s determined look and sureness that also let them know that there was no talking him out of this. The three make a silent, unspoken pact to watch over the boy until then.
Jake wasn’t giving up. Not now, not ever. Leaving you was the biggest mistake he has ever made. He was never going to let that happen again.
Seventy-two hours later and Jake was still left in the dark about your condition. He desperately wanted to sneak into your room and see you. He was close to lying to the nurses and saying he was your cousin if that was what he needed to do. But the rest of his friends convinced him to be patient. Though it hurt, the pain lessened with them around.
Like clockwork, the group would come to the hospital to wait for any news and to take care of Jake. The mornings would consist of Javy and Natasha bringing Jake a new change of clothes and breakfast. His afternoons were spent with Bradley dragging him back home to take a quick shower while Bob stayed at the hospital until they returned. The first day was like pulling teeth with Jake. The scene would have been quite amusing, if not for the seriousness of their situation. Bradley looked like he was dragging a child through the hospital with how stubborn Jake was being. A quick phone call to Javy had him fixing his attitude.
“You don’t want the first impression Ace gets of you after so long to be that you stink, do you?” he had said.
So he reluctantly obliged, returning back to the hospital freshly bathed under 45 minutes flat.
Jake’s evenings were spent with Mickey and Reuben force feeding him dinner and trying to distract him with mediocre board games.
The next day, the cycle would repeat. Then again on the next. Their distractions were welcomed and he appreciated how they have been there for the both of you through everything. When night fell and the waiting room emptied, Jake stayed right where he was.
He would bury himself into the neck of his sweatshirt and try to get as much sleep as he could. Sleep didn’t come easy to Jake. All of the “what if’s” and the fear of missing the moment you’d wake clouded his thoughts to the point where sleep just seemed absolutely impossible.
The only ones left in the waiting room were the few straggling family members waiting for their loved ones and the nurses who passed by every now and then. The dim lighting and eerie silence, bar the sound of heart monitors and the occasional code call, were more than enough to have the voices in Jake’s head amplify in volume.
It was his own voice, berating him for not checking up on him sooner. For being hard headed and too full of pride to approach you first. It was Javy’s, telling him that you got into an accident. It was your last I love you. No, not last. He won’t entertain that idea.
No matter how much he willed himself not to, he couldn’t help but think to the last time the both of you spoke. Jake hated himself for not saying those three words back to you. He never thought that one choice would lead to the possibility of never hearing your voice again, touching your soft skin, or seeing your bright eyes full of life. Of never loving you again. What hurt him the most though, was the possibility that your last thought of him may be that he didn’t love you anymore. That was far from the truth.
He loved you more than he thought he was capable of loving someone. Jake has had his fair share of girlfriends and flings, but not one of them made him feel the way you did with something as simple as a look in his direction. That’s all it took with you. One look and Jake knew you were it for him. Nothing else mattered.
Jake hated himself for making you doubt that. Jake hated himself for leaving that night and most of all he hated himself for not saying it back. Now, all he wanted to do was shower you in love and reassure you that despite the sting of your words, he never stopped loving you. He can’t imagine what he would’ve done if he was in your shoes. Right now, he wished he was. If he could be in your place and take your pain, he would.
But he can’t and if something worse were to happen to you, Jake would be the one to live with that pain and burden. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if it came to that.
It’s funny to think that three years ago, Jake would have rolled his eyes and scoffed at the image of himself being hopelessly in love. Now you were his everything–the thing he couldn’t imagine his life without.
It was a miracle that he was able to fall asleep that night with no nightmares. The exhaustion must have finally caught up to him because his sleep was so deep that he woke up to Javy frantically shaking his shoulders to get him to wake.
His eyes snapped open as he came to. His senses readjusted to the environment around him before remembering where he was and why he was there.
Javy sounded like he was underwater as Jake shook himself awake. His vision finally clears and he sees the rest of his friends already there in the room. A quick glance outside was enough to tell him he slept through breakfast and probably lunchtime too.
Jake, still feeling groggy, was completely disregarding everything his best friend was saying. He assumed he was being given the same spiel he’s heard for the past three days about needing to eat and take care of himself.
Then Javy says something that has Jake snapping wide awake.
He barely gives him another chance to repeat himself before Jake is scrambling to his feet with bleary eyes and disheveled hair. He had no other cares in the world right now other than to confirm that what Javy had said is true.
The sweet nurse who Jake had familiarized himself with during his stay gently caught him by the wrist and tugged him towards the hall.
“Her parents got here an hour ago, but since she woke she’s only been asking for you,” Nurse Donna informed him.
A small flutter works its way around Jake’s rib cage and down to his stomach upon hearing her words. He can no longer contain the nerves that flood through his system as he continues to clumsily follow Donna, tripping over his own feet in the process.
When Donna finally lets go of his wrist, he stops outside the door marked with your last name for just a moment. Hesitation and fear cloud his mind. Maybe Donna was mistaken. What if you weren’t actually asking for him? What if she had misheard? What if–
“It’s okay, honey. Go see your girl.” Donna urges him with an encouraging smile.
His girl. God, he missed hearing that. He gives her a small nod of gratitude and exhales softly. Jake’s shaky hand reaches for the silver knob. Giving it a forceful push, he makes his way through the door frame. His feet skid to stop at the threshold and his breath hitches in his throat as he’s met with the sight of those beautiful eyes he’s been praying to see for days on end.
Two Years Ago
Jake didn’t understand why you were so cold towards him. You were even able to warm up to his frat brothers Javy and Reuben. He was dying for it to be his turn. It got to the point where Jake would just breathe while standing beside you and you’d let out a loud groan and move beside Bradley.
Jake hated to admit that he was jealous of Bradley’s ability to get along with you so easily. After your little moment in the library, he thought things between the two of you would be easier, lighter. Instead, it became the absolute opposite and Jake was close to doing something stupid just so you would pay attention to him again. He doesn’t know why, but ever since that day in the library, he found himself desperate for your attention. He was filled with the satisfaction he used to get when flirting with sorority girls. He hasn’t been able to feel that since you.
He doesn’t know what he did to make you dislike him so much. If only he knew, then maybe he could do something to rectify your predetermined notions of him.
Even now as he attempted to butter up an Alpha Phi girl, his green eyes were constantly drawn back to your figure on the other side of the aisle. The high pitched voice of the girl in front of him turned into white noise as Jake zeroed in on you. Suddenly, getting this girl to come to the party tonight was the last thing on his mind.
You hadn’t noticed him yet. If you had, you probably would’ve made a B-line toward the exit already. You were standing on your tiptoes with your tongue slightly poking out from the corner of your mouth. Brows furrowed in concentration, you desperately tried to grab a book on the top shelf. After a lousy first attempt, you try a second time. This time, you rock back on your heels for momentum before launching yourself upwards. Your second try is just as unsuccessful as your first.
Jake shakes his head with amusement as he watches you try for a third time. Your third attempt was just as successful as the last two, leaving you standing empty handed.
“Hey, Becky? Why don’t we finish this conversation another time, yeah?” He gently pats the girl on the arm, all while keeping his gaze trained on you. Jake barely waits for the girl’s response, missing her disgruntled correction of, My name’s Brittany! that falls from her lips.
You’re staring heatedly at the book on the top shelf. He strides over to you, patiently waiting for you to notice him. He stands beside you, also looking up intently at the book, with his arms crossed over his chest. His lips quirk up at the corners as he notes the way your body tenses upon sensing his presence.
All you do is roll back your shoulders as if preparing for one last jump. Jake stops you before you can even make your attempt.
“Sit tight, Ace, your savior’s here.” His left hand hovers over the small of your back while he extends his right arm to reach the book you were looking for. An over dramatic sigh leaves his lips as he brings his arm down and hands the book out to you. His green eyes twinkle with delight as you cross your arms in annoyance.
You turn to meet his gaze, your own stare burning into his.
Jake’s stomach does the strangest thing upon catching your eye. He suddenly finds himself mesmerized by their beautiful color. The intensity of your stare makes him feel like you can see right through him, all the way into the depths of the most hidden parts of his soul. He could get lost in them if you let him.
Breaking eye contact at the intensity of his gaze, you scoff, snatching the book from his hands. Swiftly turning on your heels, you make your way toward the end of the aisle. You stop right at the end and pause before turning over your shoulder to see Jake still eyeing you in bewilderment. “Careful on your way out, Seresin. Your head’s getting so big I’m afraid it might be a bit of a tight squeeze.”
For once, his brain seems to have shut off and he’s unable to think up a cocky or witty remark. He watches you go with intrigue and admiration. His stomach does another somersault as he recalls the exact shade of your eyes and the sway of your hips.
You are going to be the death of him.
“Jake?”
Just like that, he can finally breathe again. Tears gather in his eyes faster than his feet can bring him to the edge of the bed. Jake’s sweeping your hand that’s not hooked up to the IV in his and he lets out a breath of relief at the feeling of your skin on his. A feeling that he was afraid he’d never get to have again.
“Jake,” you sigh, the moment his hand is in yours. You breathe his name like it was your first full breath of fresh air. It falls from your lips like a prayer. Soft, sweet, and full of conviction.
He gives himself a moment to scan your body. Jake’s heart fractures even more than he thought was possible given everything he’s been through this past week. Upon seeing the state you were in, anguish crashes down onto his body. His shoulders feel heavy and his knees are weak at the sight of your pretty face all battered and bruised from various hits you took. There’s a nasty gash on your forehead that was barely holding itself together with the bandage that was placed there. Your right arm was in a cast and your left knee was propped up and wrapped up in a bandage of its own. He hopes that this was the worst of your injuries, but he knows that the extent of them goes deeper than what he can see with his naked eye. Your skin was adorned in a variety of scrapes and scratches, all of which Jake desperately wished he could kiss away.
The shallow movements of your chest and the pained whimper that leaves your lips have him carefully running his other hand over the side of your head, softly soothing you. He bends down to gently rest his forehead against yours and the second his skin makes contact with yours, he’s unable to stop the tears that begin to fall. Jake’s eyes squeeze shut and the heaviness that has been pushing on his chest since the moment he walked away from you finally subsides. His grip on your hand tightens ever so slightly as if to tell himself you’re here, you’re alive, you’re okay. The same words leave him in a hushed whisper that he shares between the two of you. Though they were more of a reassurance for himself.
A shaky exhale escapes you at his words and the way you’re gasping for air signifies that you’ve started crying as well. Part of it was from the tight pain in your chest and the other from the utter disbelief that this was real–that Jake was really here.
The first thing you thought of the second you woke was Jake. You were positive that he wasn’t going to be there, but you desperately begged for him anyway. The shock on your parents' faces that clouded your vision quickly turned to disgust as you refused to listen to their words. Your mother had tried to reach out to you, but you thrashed in her touch and frantically shook your head as you cried out for Jake.
You were in near hysterics and your parents were staring at you in shock and horror but you didn’t care. You didn’t care that they were there when all you wanted was Jake.
Your mother begged Nurse Donna to sedate you. The sour look on Donna’s face was missed by your mother as she left the room. She thought that Donna had gone to grab the sedative. However, when she returned without a syringe and with a boy, your mother almost fainted.
You, on the other hand, thought you were dreaming when you saw him walk through that door. You just couldn’t believe that even after everything, Jake was there. Then he touched you and you broke down. His scent invaded you. His touch that you’ve craved like a drug for days on end was finally yours again. The reality that he was there was more than enough to have you breaking down again.
“I’m sorry,” you slur, still slightly drowsy from the medications. “I’m sorry,” you mutter over and over again as he places his forehead on yours.
You feel him pull you closer and shush you gently as tears of his own run down his face. You did this. You made him cry. If your limbs weren’t so heavy and numb you would’ve brushed away all the tears that ran down his perfect face until his eyes were finally dry.
Jake’s elation shatters at your words. You had absolutely nothing to be sorry for right now. If anything, he should be the one on his knees begging for your forgiveness. He opens his mouth to speak before getting cut off by someone in the corner of the room clearing their throat.
Jake’s attention was so focused on you that he hadn’t noticed your parents standing there this entire time. Hot, white fury fuels him at the sight of them looking more bothered than worried for their daughter.
“You didn’t tell us you had a boyfriend,” your mother practically sneers at him.
Jake wills himself to pull it together, for your sake.
“Mom–” you start.
“How does that make you feel, son? Knowing your girlfriend didn’t tell her own parents about you?” This time, it’s your father who speaks up, eyeing Jake up and down. “Insignificant, I would say.”
“Dad! Stop it!”
The stress in your voice is evident and the spike of your heart monitor grabs Jake’s attention.
You barely had enough strength to defend Jake against their venomous words. He looks at you with wide eyes, asking for your permission to speak to them. Had this been under different circumstances, Jake wouldn’t need to think twice about biting his tongue. He probably would have snapped back at them too if he didn’t notice the unnecessary stress this entire situation was putting on your shoulders.
You shake your head at him before glancing toward your parents. “Please. Please leave.” You didn’t want them here right now. You didn’t need anyone but Jake right now.
Offended, your mother scoffs. “You’re choosing a boy over your own parents?”
This time, Jake decides to jump to your defense. “I believe she asked you to leave.” He looks over his shoulder, narrowing his gaze at your parents who stand unbothered across the room.
“Why should we listen to you?” Your mother fights back.
You start feeling lightheaded from the entire situation and you lay your head back, sliding out of Jake’s hold slightly. “Please,” you ask with the little strength you have.
Noticing the warmth of your skin leaving him, Jake gently follows the movement of your head and cradles it while helping you lower your head to the pillow. His full attention is back on you as he scans you for any more distress. Jake was getting angrier by the minute. Couldn’t your parents see how much stress they were causing you? Why wouldn’t they just leave? He was close to yelling at them now but was saved by Donna entering the room.
“Your daughter asked you to leave,” she tells them sternly. “Now I suggest you listen before I call security to have you both dragged out of here.”
Your mother’s jaw drops and your father shakes his head with a scowl. Putting his hands up in surrender, your father is the first to leave.
Your mother, however, lingers for just a moment more. “I can’t believe we left the Bahamas for this.” She always had to have the last word.
Once the room is free of their presence you heavily exhale, looking at Donna with a grateful smile.
She nods with a small smile of her own. “I’ll let you kids have a moment. Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll be right outside in case your parents try to come back.”
“Thanks, Donna,” Jake sighs, his eyes never leaving yours.
She winks at the both of you before softly closing the door on her way out.
“Are you–” the both of you say at the same time.
You avert your gaze with a nervous chuckle and Jake smiles, urging you to go first.
You take a moment to observe the boy in front of you. This Jake was not the one you saw the last time. This Jake was tired and worn out. If the dullness of his green eyes and the dark circles that surrounded them weren’t a telltale sign of his exhaustion, it was the paleness of his skin and his sullen cheeks.
“Are you okay?” You ask timidly. For the first time since you started dating, you find yourself feeling incredibly anxious about him. You were the reason why he looked like this, so empty and void of life. You didn’t even deserve for him to be here right now.
Jake shakes his head with a sad smile playing on his lips. “You’re the one in a hospital gown and you’re asking if I’m okay?”
He presses a sweet kiss to your forehead and you almost cry from the contact.
“That’s my Ace, always worrying about me.” So much fondness shines in his eyes, causing you to finally break.
The tears start flowing again, scaring Jake just a little bit.
“Your Ace?” You sob. Somehow, you knew he had already forgiven you, but you still didn’t think you deserved it. “How can you even stand being here with me after everything I did? I hurt you, Jake. I hurt you and I am so, so sorry.”
“Hey,” he whispers, softly stroking your hair. “It’s okay.”
“No, no it’s not okay. Nothing about this is okay!” You hiccup and hiss at the sting it causes in your rib cage.
“Ace, breathe for me sweetheart, come on.” He gently coaxes you with teary eyes of his own. He needs to hold it together for your sake. He needs to be strong for both of you.
“It’s not okay,” you sniffle.
“Shh…” Jake sees how much of a toll this entire thing has taken on you.
Your eyelids are drooping heavily, but you will to keep them open. You’re afraid that once you close them, you’ll wake up to find that this was all just a dream. That Jake was never really here to begin with and that you were all alone.
Jake pulls the empty chair that was beneath your bed closer to him and takes a seat. He encapsulates your hand between both of his and brings them to his lips. “It’s okay, Ace. Sleep,” he guides.
“No.” You tiredly fight against the exhaustion that is threatening to take over. “No.”
“Sleep,” Jake requests again. “I’ll still be here when you wake up.”
“You promise?” You whimper.
“I promise.” He gives your hand another kiss for safe measure, already seeing that your eyes have already begun to close. With his lips still pressed against your skin, he swears, “I’ll be here, Ace. I promise I’m never leaving you again. I love you. So fucking much.”
Jake doesn’t miss the faint smile that ghosts your lips as sleep finally takes control of your body.
Two Years Ago
He finds you lying on the dewy lawn of the Delta Chi house splayed out like a starfish. “What in the…” he mutters to himself as he makes his way towards you.
Jake stands over you, coming into your vision upside down causing you to giggle.
“Ace?”
“Hangman!” You exclaim with a dopey smile on your lips.
He rolls his eyes at the name and crouches down above you. “What are you doing out here all alone?”
You sigh dreamily. “Stargazing.”
Jake catches the scent of cheap beer and jungle juice on your lips, letting him know you were currently far from sober. That makes him worry just a little bit. Last he heard you didn’t drink. You despised it actually.
“How much have you had to drink?” He asks for safe measures.
Another giggle erupts from your lips as you hold up all ten of your fingers and even your feet, wiggling your toes in your sandals. “This many.”
That’s all Jake needs to confirm that you are long gone. “Where’s the rest of your friends?” He glances around looking for any sign of your roommates. All he sees are drunk couples making out on the front porch and the occasional flash of disco lights that escapes through the front windows and open door.
“Dunno,” is all you say with a lazy shrug.
Jake sighs, finding himself caught in a dilemma. He had a smoking hot blonde waiting for him to come back inside and bring her upstairs. So why did he feel so guilty about the thought of leaving you out here to fend for yourself? The two of you were hardly even friends, acquaintances at most. He only saw you after your group project because his friends mingled with your circle of friends after miraculously getting along upon meeting each other.
Yet as he looked down at you staring awe struck up at the sky, he knew he couldn’t just leave you out here alone. Pushing himself off his knees, he groans. “Mind if I join you?”
You shrug. “Mi casa es tu casa. Or no, wait. Tu casa es mi casa. Get it? Cause this is your house?” You laugh at your own joke.
Your laughter is infectious, plaguing Jake with a few chuckles of his own. He lays on the damp ground beside you, resting his arms behind his head. “Not really my house, darling. It’s the fraternity’s.”
“Same thing,” you wave him off.
The two of you lay there in comfortable silence, watching the night sky. Jake had to admit, this was the most fun he has probably had all night even if you were doing nothing but looking at the sky.
Out here with you, Jake felt like he could let his guard down. His cocky, playboy, frat boy persona disappeared. When around everyone else, he felt like he was expected to act a certain way but being out here with you, he knew you expected nothing of the sort.
That was one of the first things that caught him completely off guard when he met you. All it took was one look at him and you were picking him apart, dissecting all of the fronts he put up around others. That’s why you bothered him so much. He barely knew anything about you and somehow, it was like you knew everything about him. You saw through his charms and arrogance, leaving no room for any funny business.
Jake’s shoulders fall from his ears and he lets himself relax.
Hearing you shift beside him, he wants to ask you what was on your mind. His curiosity never failed to make itself known when you were around. Again, he knew that you didn’t drink, so why were you absolutely wasted right now?
The question is on the tip of his tongue, begging to be asked, but he exhales gratefully when you speak up first.
“My parents are assholes who care about nothing but my grades and their image.”
He’s not sure if he was meant to hear what you just said or if you realize it’s him that you’re talking to. So he stays quiet and patiently waits for you to continue.
“It’s parents’ weekend next week and they don’t even bother to answer any of my calls or texts about it. And when I do hear back from them it’s a halfhearted apology that they can’t make because they’re off on the other side of the world.” A dry laugh escapes you. “I don’t know what I was thinking when I invited them. I knew they weren’t going to show up, whether they were actually here or not. I mean… is it too much to ask for them to just show up and be proud of me?”
Jake sits up with a frown on his lips upon hearing your voice crack. He hesitates, unsure of what to say. He was never good at the whole comfort thing, especially when it came to crying girls. He used to try to comfort his sisters when they would cry, but he always just seemed to make things worse. He didn’t want to make you feel worse than you already did. “I’m sure they’re proud of you, Ace. They’d be idiots not to be.”
You scoff, seemingly sobering up just enough to push yourself to sit up beside him. “I guess they’re idiots then.”
Jake’s mouth runs faster than his brain can manage to keep up.“Hey, at least you have parents. I mean...look at Bradley.”
That pulls a snort and a teary laugh from you. “Oh my god! Jesus, Seresin…” You’re laughing. You feel bad that you are, but the delivery of Jake’s words was so nonchalant that you couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “You’re insane.”
He joins in your laughter, glad that he was able to pull your attention from your inner turmoil even if it was just for a minute. “What? Am I wrong?”
“You’re not, but come on. That was so uncalled for,” you shake your head in amusement.
Jake sends you a toothy grin, captivated by the way your smile grows.
“Jake!” The sound of another feminine voice catches both of your attention. The blonde he left inside earlier was running down the porch steps and in their direction. “There you are,” the girl exclaims, throwing her arms around him as she joins him on the ground. She presses an obnoxiously loud kiss to his neck with a smile. “I’ve been waiting for you, Cowboy.”
As if suddenly realizing where you were and who you were with, you tuck your chin to your sternum and avoid his gaze. He grimaces in the other girl’s hold.“Ace–”
You go to stand, still wobbling from the alcohol but you’re coherent enough to know where you were going. “Looks like duty calls, Hangman.”
The girl gives you a cheeky smile as she moves her lips from his neck to the side of his face.
He doesn’t miss the somber note of your tone. Jake watches you sway on your feet as you make your way back inside. He wants to reach out to you, beg you to stay but he holds himself back. With a sigh, he pulls the girl who’s clinging to his side up to her feet and flashes her a halfhearted grin.
Even with his newfound company, Jake couldn’t get you out of his head.
True to his word, Jake never left your side since you woke up. If the doctor’s needed to personally evaluate your condition, he would step outside but immediately come back in once the doctor gave him the okay.
Your parents haven’t made another appearance since that first day and you were relieved. Your friends have been in and out of your hospital room once you were moved to the regular hospital floor from Urgent Care.
Your body was still pretty weak due to the severity of your injuries but you felt stronger than you have in weeks. Being surrounded by your friends, your family, gave you some of that strength back. Most important of all, being with Jake had you feeling invincible.
The doctors were thrilled with your rate of recovery and predicted you would be discharged in the next couple of days.
Though Jake kept his promise to you, you still had a sliver of doubt about where the two of you stood relationship wise. You tried to bring it up a couple of times, but Jake would only respond with a shake of his before telling you not to worry about it now.
You were just a bit afraid that this was his way of letting you down easily. That this was his way of telling you that he loved you, but he just couldn’t be in a relationship with you anymore.
But then he’d do something as small as brushing your hair gently from your face as you ate or held your hand before you fell asleep at night and that little bit of worry would subside, if only for a moment.
You’re laughing at Reuben’s lame attempt to sink Nat’s battleship when Jake gives you a quick kiss on the cheek muttering a soft, “I’ll be right back,” into your ear.
You shoot him a soft smile and nod, before returning your attention to your friends’ antics.
Meanwhile, Jake makes a quick run to the coffee machine down the hall. He barely makes it five steps there when he runs into someone right outside your door.
He looks up and almost spews out an apology before realizing exactly who he ran into.
The look of distaste that falls upon his face is anything but subtle.
Your mother shares a look with your father, who sneers at the sight of him.
Being born and raised by his southern gentleman of a father and kind hearted mother, he knew he still had to show some respect towards your parents despite his dislike for them.
He gives them a nod as a form of greeting and silently prays that they let him slip past them.
“You should leave now before it gets worse,” your mother speaks up.
Jake knew he should probably ignore it. Leave your mother without the satisfaction of getting under his skin. But he couldn’t. He stops in his tracks. Glaring at them from over his shoulder, he hissed, “Excuse me?”
Your mother only shrugs, pulling her handbag tighter over her shoulder. “She’s not worth your time or the trouble. Trust us. As her parents, we would know. How does it make you feel? Knowing you must mean so little to her that she didn’t even mention your existence to her parents.”
Jake was finally tired of biting his tongue. No one, not even your own parents, talked about you like that. Not if he could help it. “With all due respect, I know she didn’t tell you about me and frankly, I don’t blame her considering the way you treat your daughter. Besides, how would either of you know anything? You’re never here so you’d never know just how worth it your daughter is. I would walk through hell for her. Something I know neither of you would ever do.
So no, you don’t know. You don't know just how thoughtful and sweet and caring she is. You don’t know just how incredibly smart she is. Most of all, you would never understand that she is worth everything.”
Jake is breathless at the end of his speech. His chest heaves as he catches his breath and harshly swallows from his passionate spiel. You were everything and the idea that anyone would think otherwise astonished him.
Your mother barely bats an eye. “Well, I guess you wouldn’t mind completely taking her off our hands then. Considering she moved so far away from us for college, you can tell my daughter to not even bother coming back home to visit us because apparently, we’re never here for her anyway.” She storms past Jake in suppressed fury, muttering to herself, “The Bahamas!”
Your father, on the other hand, pauses for a moment. He opens his mouth like he wants to say something and glances through the doorway before looking back at Jake and clearing his throat. “Just, um, just tell her the hospital bill will be taken care of once it comes in the mail.” He gives one last look at your hospital room before scurrying in the same direction your mother had gone.
A sigh of relief escapes Jake’s lips from the encounter, diminishing his prior craving for caffeine.
He makes his way back into the room to see three pairs of eyes settled on him. Jake’s a bit unnerved at all the attention he’s receiving and he’s slightly confused by the way Nat, Reuben, and you were all staring at him.
He nervously chuckles, running a hand down the back of his neck.
Reuben suddenly stands up, grabbing his battleship board. “I think we should continue this outside, right Nat?”
She nods with a smile grabbing her board as well. “Yeah, let’s. We’ll give you two a minute.” Natasha squeezes your hand as she ushers out of the room.
Jake shifts back and forth on his feet, feeling a heat of embarrassment flow through him. “You heard all of that, didn’t you?”
A look he can’t fully decipher on your face. “Yeah, I did.”
“I am so sorry if I crossed a line I just—“
“I love you.” You cut him off teary eyed.
“What?” He breathes, the wideness of his growing smile no longer contained.
You give him a smile of your own that matches the look of love and pure happiness that lights up his features. “I said I love you. I heard you, that first night you stayed over but I was too afraid to say it back. Just in case you didn’t mean it the way I did anymore. But then you…”
Jake cups your face in his hands, nodding to encourage you to take your time.
“But then I heard what you said to my parents and no one has ever stood up for me that way.”
His thumbs begin to trace gentle patterns onto the apples of your cheeks.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you and I’m sorry if I ever made you feel otherwise.” A tear finally escapes from the corner of your eye that gets gently pressed away by Jake’s lips.
“Oh, sweetheart. I’m sorry if I ever made you doubt my love.”
You shake your head, desperately hoping he understands that none of that matters now. “You’re here now. That’s what matters. I love you, Jake Seresin.”
Finally, after days of waiting, he kisses you softly on the lips. It’s not rough or hungry, despite how long he’s been waiting for this moment. It’s soft, delicate, and full of love. It’s passionate and heartwarming. It’s the kind that you could feel all the way to the tips of your toes. Just like the first time.
“I love you, Ace. You’ll never have to doubt that again.”
Your relationship, just like your body, wasn’t one hundred percent healed. There were still many things the two of you had to talk about.
However, knowing that Jake loved you didn’t make the unspoken parts so scary. Having him, loving him, is enough.

FEEDBACK, COMMENTS, AND REBLOGS ARE ENCOURAGED AND APPRECIATED!
Things are different now. You are different now. Not in a bad way, you suppose. Just different. You’re more social, more outgoing, you feel more at peace with yourself. To think that it’s all because of a group project.
Never would you have thought that a randomized group project would lead you to your newfound friends. Never would you have thought they would be Frat boys. Bradley Bradshaw and Jake Seresin somehow wormed their way into your little friend group, bringing Javy Machado and Reuben Fitch with them. Suddenly, your little group of five became nine. You used to think you’d hate it, but now you wouldn’t have things any other way.
Even Jake Seresin, who you found absolutely infuriating, added something to the dynamic of the group. Despite your clear distaste for him, it just wouldn’t be the same without him.
You couldn’t explain it, but you felt complete. Had you told yourself five months ago that you’d become friends with Delta Chi’s most notorious you would have laughed in your own face. Never, in a million years, did you think that would ever happen. Yet here you were, spending your Saturday night in your apartment playing board games and drinking (they were drinking, you were supervising) with your expanded group.
“I call bullshit! That’s a hit!” Javy drunkenly slurs at Bob who holds his hands up with clear offense.
Bob pushes his glasses up the slope of his nose. His flushed skin and pink tipped ears are a tell tale sign that he is intoxicated. “Is not!”
Javy shakes his head vigorously. “Is to! Let me see that,” he clumsily reaches over towards Bob’s Battleship board. Javy’s lack of coordination sends the board flying, along with the rain of tiny red and white playing pieces that scatter across the living room.
The room erupts in a chorus of shouts and groans upon the inevitable clean up of the game and you sigh from your place on the couch. “I think that’s enough of that for tonight.” You wipe your palms on the fabric of your pants before bringing yourself to a stand.
Carefully maneuvering around your friends who are now scattered all across the room picking up little red and white bullets, you gather the last of stray cups of alcohol that was left on the coffee table.
“Hey!” Bradley catches sight of you whisking away their stash for the night.
“Nope, no more drinks for tonight.” Bradley opens his mouth in protest as you continue, “Unless you want to spend the rest of the night cleaning the apartment of the mess you guys made.”
The pointed look you give him makes his mouth snap shut and he sends you a mock salute before clumsily going back to picking up stray playing pieces.
“Thank you,” you chide, sauntering over to the kitchen. You laugh at the sound of your friends’ overlapping chatter and Natasha’s mothering as she commands the boys to quit stalling and clean.
There was no denying that your apartment was loud. Louder than it should be for ten o’clock at night. But you couldn’t bring yourself to care about quieting your friends down. You’ve spent so long living in silence that you embrace the sounds of joy and laughter that surround you.
Silence isn’t unfamiliar to you. You grew up as an only child in a big house with emotionally absent parents. Silence was the only thing you ever knew. Then it wasn’t.
You found a new home, a new family. One you wouldn’t give up for anything.
You were too deep in your own musings to notice the faint footsteps creeping up behind you.
“You missed a few,” a deep voice from behind you makes your heart jump.
You almost drop the cups in your hand as you spin on your heel to see Jake Seresin standing in front of you with a few more glasses in hand.
Your shoulders drop from your ears once you get a hold of your surroundings. “Geez, Seresin! You almost scared me half to death.”
He winces at your wide eyes, biting his bottom lip to stifle the smile that threatens to cross his face. “Sorry,” he shrugs, stepping in front of you to place the cups on the counter behind you.
You’re unsure whether or not he decided to step into your space intentionally. Either way, he was close enough for your chests to touch. The thought set your cheeks on fire, causing you to shove his arm away with a scoff. “Ever heard of personal space, Hangman?”
Rather than the witty retort you were expecting out of him, Jake mumbles a soft apology before stepping back to keep an arm's length between you two.
The silence that follows is unsettling. You realize that you have never been alone with Jake for longer than a few minutes at a time. When you were working on the group project together, Bradley was always around. The one time you tried to help him study for his American History final, you fell asleep halfway into your study session, cutting it short. For some reason you didn’t know how to act around him in any way other than hostile.
You were glad he fought you back with just as much fire. It kept the strange feelings in your stomach at bay.
The way he was looking at you now, however, this was different from the Jake you were so used to seeing. There was no puff to his chest or arrogance in his gaze. Only softness and dare you say, ease in his posture.
“They’re showing the Twilight movies at the theaters this weekend if you were interested in going,” Jake breaks the silence.
It takes you a moment to comprehend what he’s saying or to even realize that he’s talking to you. You thought Natasha must have stumbled her way into the kitchen but you glanced around to see no one but you two still there. You could no longer hear the noise being made by your friends in the living room. It was like all your senses had suddenly attuned to the man in front of you. The only thing you were aware of was him. You stutter embarrassingly over your words as you respond. “Oh, you mean wi–with you?”
Jake’s eyes grow wide before he shakes his head. “No, well, yeah if you want to. I wasn’t trying to imply that you should go with me or anything. You could go with anyone you want. Doesn’t have to be me, I just thought that you’d like to know since you’re such a huge fan of the series.”
Jake wants the ground to open up and swallow him whole right now. Smooth, Seresin, he scolds himself. Just when he thought he might have been reaching some middle ground with you, he had to go and make it weird by making you think he was asking you out. Not that he was opposed to the idea, rather that he wanted to ask you out the right way. Not while he was slightly tipsy in your kitchen.
Your lips twitch unexpectedly, pulling upwards at the corners. There was something about seeing this side of Jake Seresin–the nervous, rambly side of him– that you found endearing. You preferred him more than the cocky, self centered frat boy he usually was. “How did you know I like the Twilight series?”
He shrugs nonchalantly, a proud smile over taking his worried features. “You aren’t the only one who pays attention to things, Ace.”
You put your hands up in surrender with light laughter, shaking your head softly. “Sorry, I’m just surprised that Jake Seresin pays attention to things other than sorority girls and himself.”
“I pay attention to you,” the words just almost fall from his lips. Instead what comes out is, “And football. I pay attention to football too.”
You snort, crossing your arms across your chest with a smirk. “Right, sorority girls, yourself, and the Dallas Cowboys.”
“You got it, sweetheart,” he winks.
The corner of his mouth lifts slightly when he winks and you find it absolutely amusing. A small fit of giggles erupt from you causing him to tilt his head with confusion.
“What’s so funny, Ace?” he questions with his hands on his hips.
His own lips quirk up as he tries not to laugh, finding your own incredibly contagious. That and he couldn’t help but think of just how much he loved seeing you this way. So open and carefree.
Love. That isn’t the first time the word has popped into Jake’s head when he thought of you. It was, however, the first time he truly welcomed the thought.
It wasn’t like in the movies, where the main character has this big revelation that they're in love. Rather, it slowly crept up on him. Always being in the back of his mind, but never clear enough for him to make out what it was exactly he was feeling.
But things have changed lately, he has changed. You made him want to be better.
You two weren’t close, far from it actually. But he wants to get close to you. He wants to be someone worth your time. He wants to be able to have more moments like this  with you.
He was willing to prove that he was no longer the immature playboy you think he is.
The question is on the tip of his tongue. Maybe he should just take this as an opportunity to ask you out. He opens his mouth, ready to take the leap when—
“Bradley!” Natasha shouts from the living room. “Ace, can you grab the Clorox? Bradley just threw up on the floor!”
Mickey moans, “I think I might be next!”
You curse under your breath sending Jake a look he reciprocated with a tired sigh.
“Well, looks like we’re on babysitting duty,” you weakly smile.
He nods halfheartedly, watching you grab the wipes before hurrying out to the living room. His chest physically hurt as he watched you walk away. He was so close. However, he knew his feelings would have to wait.
The old Jake didn’t do commitment or girlfriends. The old Jake didn’t fall in love.
The new Jake was falling hard, and he was falling fast. He had a feeling things were only going to get more complicated from here. He doesn’t mind it, though. In fact, he kind of likes it.

Jake’s eyes light up at the sound of your ringtone going off on his phone. He wasn’t expecting you to call today because you were meeting with your parents for lunch. Despite his initial surprise, he picks up, just in case something was wrong. “Hey, baby,” he greets with a small smile on his face.
The sound of a sniffle reaches his ear causing his smile to fall. His heart drops, knowing you were crying on the other end. “Ace?”
Another sniff leaves the speaker. “Can you come get me, please?”
Just by the sound of your voice, he knows you’re about to break. Jake doesn’t even hesitate to slip on his shoes and run to grab his keys at your words. “Of course, sweetheart. Is everything okay? Are you safe?”
You hum in response, your silence causing Jake to worry even more.
“Baby?” Jake asks again, prompting a word of response from you to ease his racing mind.
“I’m okay, Jake, just need you.” Your voice is muffled, but he hears you loud and clear.
It feels like his heart is being squeezed in a fist. He wishes there was more he could do, but for now he had to get to you first. “Just stay put and I’ll be right there.”
He thanks God for hitting all the green lights on the way to the restaurant. As he pulls into the parking lot, he sees you sitting on the curb in your pretty dress and make up all smudged around your eyes. Even in your disheveled appearance, you still looked as beautiful as ever. Jake puts the truck in park and haphazardly throws his door open, hurrying out to make his way to you.
“Oh, sweetheart,” he breathes, seeing your eyes filled with a new round of tears. Within seconds he’s crouched in front of you and pulling you into his arms. He presses your face into the crook of his neck and soothingly rubs gentle circles onto your lower back. “It’s okay. I’ve got you. I’m here, I’ve got you.”
That seems to set you off even more. Another broken sob leaves your lips making Jake’s chest tighten at the sound. He desperately wanted to ask what had happened. He wanted to know where your parents were or what they said to you again to make you this upset. He has never met them, only knowing them through the sporadic phone calls you received from them and the tears you’ve shed because of them. He didn’t know them, but he knew that they weren’t the best of parents. Jake found himself afraid of what you were going to say and with good reason. But he knows you need your space and that you’ll tell him in your own time.
He had made the mistake once of pressuring you into speaking to him when you weren’t ready to and he never wanted to make you that angry again.
So instead he opts to help you get settled into the truck with your seat belt snuggly across your waist and begins the drive back to your apartment.
Jake glances at you from the driver’s seat every now and then, just in case you broke down again. He could see the storm brewing in your eyes as you stared out the window, resting your chin on your fist and your forehead on the glass.
He rhythmically taps his thumbs along to the beat of the Fleetwood Mac song that’s playing from his radio to try to calm his nerves. Which he knew was silly of him, considering you were the one in an emotional turmoil right now.
He had hardly driven two miles when you finally spoke up and Jake is surprised that you spoke so soon.
“They didn’t show,” you confess softly.
Jake turns off the radio as soon as he hears you speak. He gives you a moment to collect your thoughts, taking your free hand that sits in your lap and grasps it tightly in his. When you don’t pull away, he pulls your interlocked hands into his lap.
“There was no text, no call, nothing. I just sat there like an idiot, waiting for them to show up!” You raise your voice, the pity you felt for yourself turning into hot anger. “I was there for thirty minutes before the waitress asked me to leave because they had other reservations. I mean geez, Jake, how could I be so stupid?”
“You’re not stupid, Ace.”
You scoff, shaking your head with disappointment. “Naive, then. How could I have been so naive to think they were actually going to keep their promise and show up this time?”
He didn’t have an answer to that question. He knew you weren’t looking for one but he wanted to be able to say something to make you feel better. Instead he presses a kiss to your knuckles and rubs the back of your hand with his thumb, hoping his actions could convey some comfort.
You didn’t say another word after your little outburst, even when you got to the apartment. You just gave him a kiss on the cheek in thanks before disappearing into your room. Jake sat on the couch, folding his hands over his lap and patiently waited for you to come out. When he heard the shower start to run, he knew you wouldn’t be coming out any time soon.
Thinking about how sad and defeated you looked when he went to pick you up broke his heart. It made him realize that all you really wanted was to spend time with your family. Jake wished he could give you everything you ever wanted.
Jake’s phone chimes and he pulls it from his back pocket to see the Daggers group chat going off. Lightning struck him then as he urgently opened his phone.
Your family is what you wanted and Jake knew exactly how to give it to you.
_______________
The sound of Jurassic Park was playing softly from the living room as you stepped outside of your room. You weren’t expecting anyone to be home other than you and Jake, so you cautiously creeped out to the hall.
There, the sounds from the living room get louder and you’re able to make out your friends’ voices. Rounding the corner, you see Nat, Javy, Bob, Reuben, Mickey, and Bradley all sprawled out across the room. Each of them talking over one another as if in the middle of an important debate. In the mix of them all, you see Jake sitting on the love seat with a spot specifically reserved for you. When he sees you, his eyes light up and he beckons you over with an open arm.
“Ace, come help us settle this once and for all.” He smiles widely at you, tucking you into the space beside him.
You instinctively snuggle into him, smiling bashfully at your friends who have been alerted to your presence.
“Which is better, the Park or World movies?”
All eyes are on you, awaiting your answer. “Jurassic Park. Obviously.” The room erupts into chaos once more, everyone’s chatter overlapping one another.
You laugh, watching as they continue to go off on one another.
The heavy weight on your shoulders is gone in an instant and you remember the reason for your low mood in the first place. You had canceled movie night to have dinner with your parents. You told everyone they could do their own thing today, so you were wondering why they were all here.
It was until you looked up at the blond whose arm was wound tightly around your middle as he leaned his cheek against the top of your head. A rush of warmth floods your veins upon realizing that all of this was his doing. You’re overwhelmed by his love and thoughtfulness, so much so that you think you might just cry again. You would never get used to being loved by Jake Seresin.
Instead, you wrap yourself around his middle, muttering softly into his neck, “You didn’t have to do all this for me.”
Jake looks down. “Of course I did. You were missing your family, so I thought why don’t I bring them to you?”
Your family. They weren’t the people who birthed and raised you. They weren’t the people you were related to by blood. They weren’t traditional in any sense that a family would be. However, Jake was right. They were yours.
Not once has your parents shown you an ounce of care and attention that the group in front of you did.
Not once did they take you out for important milestones or to celebrate your birthday like Natasha did.
Not once did they remember your favorite movie like Mickey did, or remember your favorite book like Bob.
Not once did they take you out for important milestones or to celebrate your birthday like Reuben, Bradley, and Javy.
Not once did they know every little thing about you like Jake did.
Not once did they love you like this group did.
They were never your family to begin with. These people, however, the ones who dropped everything just to help cheer you up today, were. And they always would be.

catch up with jake and ace here!
a/n: decided to write a lil bit for these two before bed, it's missing jake and ace hours (oh my babies...) maybe this will get me to continue writing some bradley and clover too….
»»————- ♠︎ ————-««
The familiar feeling of love and pride swells through Jake’s veins as he watches you with his nieces and nephews. This wasn’t the first time you’ve come home with him, yet he still felt the same excitement that came over him every time you visited.
There was always that small feeling of disbelief, almost like he couldn’t believe that you were real. That you chose him and his family to give you the love you deserved and to keep you safe. He always thought there would be a day where you would wake up and realize maybe he wasn’t what you wanted. But that day never came and here you were still as in love with him as ever.
Jake laughs as he watches you take his youngest nephew and lift him off the ground, spinning him in a circle before putting him back down. The little boy joyously giggles, demanding another round of “spins” with grabby hands.
You comply with a smile and lower down to the boy’s height before sweeping him off his feet and whirling him around once more.
His nephew’s laughter mixes with your own as you put him back on his feet and ruffle his hair.
A feeling that’s not unfamiliar to him stirs inside of Jake at the sight of you suddenly being surrounded by two of his younger nieces and nephew. All of them clamor over with excited chatters neither of you could understand.
You shake your head with a smile and exasperated eyes as you look at Jake who already has his gaze set on you.
His smile is just as wide, if not wider than yours, as he walks over with his hands on his hips. “Alright, alright, what’s going on here?”
His niece, Rebecca, reaches for her Uncle Jake who swiftly lifts her in his arms. “We want Auntie Ace to give us some spins!” The little girl’s exclamation is paired with her throwing her arms up in the air.
“Yeah, Auntie Ace, spin! Spin! Spin!” His nephews and Rebecca’s sister begin chanting over and over.
Jake sees the look on your face just as the words fall from the kid’s mouths. You’ve come home with Jake and met his nieces and nephews twice before then, only talking with them occasionally when they were on FaceTime with Jake. This was the first time they have ever called you “Auntie.”
Your eyes are slightly glassy as you gaze lovingly at the little kids around you before locking eyes with Jake and Rebecca who was already reaching for you. You take her into your arms with ease, not once breaking eye contact with Jake.
“Yeah, Auntie Ace, give ‘em some spins,” he tells you endearingly. The words fall easily from his lips, just as it did from the little ones’.
You smile, wholeheartedly with eyes filled with stars for all of Jake’s little nieces and nephews. Auntie Ace–you have never felt so loved in your life. Brushing a few of Rebecca’s stray strands of hair from her face, you give her a kiss on the cheek. “Oh, alright. Line up, kiddos, everyone’s getting two spins each.”
There’s an eruption of cheers, making you laugh once more with the little girl in your arms.
Jake steps back, taking in the scene in front of him. For a moment, he’s able to imagine you, the love of his life with smaller loves, just like these. Two or three little ones that were half of you and half of him running around a yard with a white picket fence. He knew it was a little early for the thoughts that came to his mind but there was no doubt that he was ready to commit to it all.
For now, he admired your new title. Uncle Jake and Auntie Ace. He loved the sound of that.

“This counts as kidnapping, you know.”
Natasha sends you a coy grin from beside you. “It’s not kidnapping if you came with me willingly.”
“Because you told me we were going to the thrift store! Not the boys’ stupid car wash thing,” you huff like a child in the passenger’s seat with your arms crossed over your chest and everything.
“It’s not stupid. It’s for charity.” Nat shrugs.
“Which charity is that again?” You roll your eyes.
“I… don’t remember. But Javy invited us and we like Javy, right?”
“I guess,” you grumble.
It’s her turn to roll her eyes at your antics as she pulls into the lower campus parking lot. Natasha follows the poorly designed signs into the wash line. “That’s the spirit, Ace,” she pinches your cheek playfully, making you swat at her hand.
You continue to complain about all the other ways you could’ve been spending your Saturday while Natasha ignores you by turning up the radio. Between her rendition of Faith Hill’s This Kiss and your thirty second power nap, a knock at your window makes your heart jump and your eyes open wide.
Putting down your window, you’re met with a shirtless Javy Machado who’s wearing the biggest grin you’ve ever seen. “Hey! You made it!”
It was hard not to smile at his genuine excitement of seeing you both. “Against my will,” you say despite the growing amusement on your features. “Nat told me she was taking me to lunch and thrifting. She left out the part of the car wash between those two activities.”
Javy plants his hands on his hips. “At least you got some free lunch,” he pauses before looking over your shoulder at Natasha. “Right?”
You ramble on about how Nat owes you more than just lunch after the stunt she’s pulled, not noticing the flustered look on your best friend’s face as she unabashedly admires Javy from the driver’s seat.
Neither Javy nor Natasha pay attention to your words as they get caught in one another’s gaze.
It’s only when Bradley, also shirtless, walks up to the car and claps Javy on the back that the two of them snap out of their little stupor.
“I’m surprised to see you here, Ace. I thought you said these fraternity events were a load of baloney.” Bradley slides his sunglasses down the bridge of his nose so you could see the amused look in his eyes.
“Again, I was kidnapped,” you raise your brows at him.
“I did not kidnap you!” Natasha chides.
Ignoring her remark, you eye Javy and Bradley with a wrinkle of your nose. “If I  didn’t know better, I would’ve thought this was for the Boys Without Clothes charity.”
“Haha,” Bradley laughs dryly. Spotting his friend who’s finishing up with the car in front of you, he cups his hands over his mouth with a sly grin. “Hey, Jake! Look who it is!”
The mention of Jake Seresin makes your heart rate increase and your cheeks warm up. It’s not like you didn’t know he was going to be here, of course he was, he was in this fraternity. You just didn’t think you’d have to acknowledge him at all. With all his flaunting and showboating, you would have thought he would be too busy to stop and say hi to you and Natasha, yet here he was making his way over to her car with that overconfident smirk on his face.
Just like his buddies, he is also shirtless and proud. The sight of him irks you, pulling an immediate scowl on your lips. However, you can’t deny that he looked good. His skin, sheened with sweat, defined the figure that he clearly worked hard to take care of. He was a sight to be looked at and he knew it. You hated that you knew it too.
“See something you like, sweetheart?”
That cocky, Texas drawl sets the tips of your ears on fire. You flit your gaze up and, just as you suspected, he was standing with that bothersome smile on his face. You tear your eyes away from him in favor of looking up to the sky. “In your dreams, Seresin.”
“Only every night,” he winks.
Your mouth falls slack at his words and you hate that your brain chose this moment to short circuit. With a huff of annoyance, you go back to crossing your arms across your chest and falling back against your seat. “You are insufferable.”
Jake bites back quickly. “Insufferable. That’s a new one.”
Your attention has been so attuned to Jake that you didn’t realize the other boys have already started on Natasha’s car.
He leans his arm against the top of the car door and lowers himself so he is eye to eye with you. You freeze, suddenly feeling hyper aware of his presence. Even with the sweat covering his body he still smelled like cologne and the mint chewing gum he carries around in his pocket. There’s barely an inch of space amongst you as he takes his lower lip between his teeth. “At least it’s better than the other things you like to call me.”
“Oh, get a room, you two.” Natasha’s voice pulls you from Jake’s trance.
Jake laughs, pushing off the car to grab a sponge from the bucket behind him. “Close your window, Ace. I don’t want you getting all wet.”
You barely move, fuming with irritation and another feeling you can’t quite place that forms in the pit of your stomach. Nat rolls your window up as she guffaws at your stunned expression.
“Close your mouth too. You’re gonna catch flies.”
You whip around to look at Natasha who is clutching her stomach from her silent fits of laughter.
Covering your face with your hands, you slouch lower into your seat. “Shut up, Nat.”

—LOVING YOU IS EASY

frat!jake seresin x f!reader
dagger squad college!au
summary: it's delta chi casino night and your doubts and insecurities find a way to ruin your perfect mood. good thing jake seresin is there to pull you from the depths of your mind.

part of the loving you universe || also find it on ao3 here
𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊, 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒, 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐁𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐒 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃!
You can’t pinpoint the exact moment you fell in love with him. It could’ve been that day when he chased after you in the pouring rain to give you a piece of his heart. It could’ve been when he stole the last bottle of Mountain Dew from Bradley because he knew how much you liked them. You can’t pinpoint the exact moment you fell in love with him, but you knew that the ever growing feeling you had for the man was love.
When he broke through the walls you built around your heart, it didn’t take much for you to fall utterly and completely in love with him. Any defenses against him were useless because he somehow managed to wiggle his way through the barbed wire anyway.
No matter how much you tried to deny it, you were weak for Jake Seresin.
Your eyes flit around the room, taking in the slightly tipsy college students that sat around makeshift poker tables. It was Casino Night and Delta Chi was hosting the event. Everyone in attendance was dressed to the nines. Boys in their nicest button ups and slacks, girls in their best evening dresses, and the rest in the most dapper outfits they had. Most of the people in the room were from other fraternities and sororities making the only people you really knew to be your boyfriend, his friends, and yours.
God, you got butterflies just from thinking of the word. Boyfriend. Jake Seresin was your boyfriend. You weren’t getting used to that any time soon.
You hung off to the side, opting to be just a spectator for the night. Your friends clamored and booed just to poke fun, but they knew these things weren’t really your scene. You catch Jake’s eye from the other side of the room. The way his gaze softens when it meets yours sends a rush of overwhelming emotion through you. Your stomach erupts in a flurry of butterflies and your heart beat picks up its pace in your ribcage. Every time he looked at you felt like the first time he said I love you.
He gives you a lopsided smile that accentuates the dimple on his left cheek. You wiggle your fingers at him in a small wave to which he cockily winks back in response. You playfully roll your eyes before his attention is stolen from you by one of his fraternity brothers.
Leaning against the wall, you sigh, once again admiring your boyfriend from afar.
“He’s so hot.”
The sudden company of a girl you recognized from Sigma Nu startles you. You turn to see who she’s looking at and of course, she’s eyeing none other than Jake Seresin.
You hum in response, taking another sip from your cup.
“I mean, seriously. A guy like that… I’m surprised no one’s staked their claim on him yet. Then again, Jake Seresin could have anyone he wants.” She pauses then looks at you with eager eyes. “Do you think I should go talk to him?”
The elated state you found yourself in a moment earlier came crashing down, bringing you back to reality. She was right, Jake Seresin could have anyone he wants.
How you were able to catch the attention of a guy like him was beyond you. The two of you came from two different ends of the spectrum. You were a bookish, studious, chronically sarcastic know it all while he was fun, charismatic, and quite literally the life of every party.
This girl who was absolutely stunning and looked like a supermodel was asking you if she should talk to your boyfriend. You should’ve said no. You should’ve stood your ground, “staked your claim” as she had said and told her that Jake was taken. That he was yours. Instead a weak, “I don’t know,” tumbled from your lips and so did your resolve.
The Sigma Nu girl fluffed up her hair and pulled up her top to accentuate her breasts before standing taller and giving you a sultry grin. “Wish me luck.”
Your blood turns to ice, leaving your feet frozen to the floor. There’s a small voice in the back of your mind screaming at you to follow after her. To pull her back by her perfect hair and tell her to back off. Maybe that was a bit extreme, but you couldn’t help the unfamiliar feeling of jealousy that rushed over you. You and Jake have only been officially together for a few months, but hasn’t she seen the glances the two of you exchanged all night? Hasn’t she seen Jake lovingly wrapped around you at Delta Chi’s parties? Couldn’t she tell that Jake only had eyes for you?
You trusted him. You trusted him with all your heart. You knew Jake would never entertain the thought of another girl and yet watching the Sigma Nu saunter up to your boyfriend with a lustful gleam in her eye and ill intentions, you were struck with the thought that even if he did entertain the idea of being with other girls you wouldn’t blame him.
Seeing how easily she wormed her way perfectly between Jake and Javy and the rest of the group as she ever so charmingly striked up a conversation between their fraternity brothers made your stomach feel queasy. Jake didn’t spare her a second glance, even as she reached out to caress his arm. He moved away from her grasp and stepped to the side to create some space between them. The action should have filled you with relief. Instead, you felt like you were going to be sick.
She looked so perfect interacting with everyone. Not a single thing about her was awkward or out of place. She fit right in with the group and looked so right next to Jake. She was the type of person you’d imagine Jake dating. Someone who could keep up with his charm and wit. Someone who was just as social and outgoing as he is. Someone who was everything you weren’t. So no, you wouldn’t blame Jake for ever entertaining the idea of being with someone else. Had you been in his shoes, you’d probably want someone else too.
Someone who wasn’t so bland. Someone who didn’t get overwhelmed by crowds and easily sick from the taste of alcohol. Someone who could stay up and party all night. Someone who wouldn’t hold them back.
It was foolish of you to think you could make Jake happy. Sooner or later he was going to wake up and realize he could find someone good, someone better.
The room suddenly felt like a sauna, the air hot and heavy making it hard to breathe. Your vision blurred with tears that threatened to spill from your eyes. Everything around you sounded like it was underwater. It felt like you were too. Your limbs were too heavy to move. You felt like your lungs were going to burst from not inhaling any air. You hadn’t even noticed that Natasha and Bob were standing in front of you and leading you towards the double doors until the chill of the night air put out the fire on your cheeks.
You gasp the moment you step foot outside, breaching the surface feeling like you could breathe again.
“Breathe Ace.”
You follow the voice like a siren call. Tapping your fingers against your thigh, you count every breath, remembering to take note of your surroundings and bring yourself back to the present.
A moment passes before your breath goes back to normal and your vision is no longer clouded. You can see Nat in front of you with her hands on your shoulders and her forehead is crinkled in that way it gets when she’s worried.
You wrap your arms around yourself as if finally realizing you were standing outside in the middle of the night without your jacket.
Natasha gives you a second to recollect yourself and your thoughts, leading you by the hand to sit on the concrete steps of the meeting hall. The concrete feels like ice against your skin, sending another jolt of chills through your body.
You begin counting again when you feel yourself drifting off. You get to forty five before Nat breaks the silence.
“It’s been awhile since your last one of those, huh?”
You swallow harshly.
Bob comes back out with a bottle of water in his hand that he gently offers to you. You give him a weak smile and take it from him, haphazardly unscrewing the cap. It falls to the ground but you don’t have it in you to care as you take a large gulp of water. Bob takes a seat beside you with Nat on your other side.
Even after drinking three fourths of the bottle, somehow your throat still feels dry. Your mind goes back to the reason why you were out here in the first place and you almost hurl onto the sidewalk. Images of Jake and that chick from Sigma Nu fill your brain and you can’t help but feel sick all over again.
Bob gets up at the sight of your flushed skin. “I should go get Jake,” he stutters.
“No!” You shoot up to your feet immediately, startling Nat and Bob. Clearing your throat, you state again,“No, don’t get Jake. Please.”
Natasha and Bob eye each other warily before ultimately deciding to respect your wish.
Nat nods, rubbing soothing circles onto the skin of your arm. “Okay, we won’t get him.”
A loud thud from behind makes your heart jump.
You turn to see Jake clamoring through the doors in a state of dishevelment. When his eyes land on your form, he lets out a sigh of relief. His shoulders fall and he hurries down the steps to get to you.
You know what he’s gonna ask before the words even leave his lips. Facing your back to him, you wrap your arms around yourself and say, “I’m fine, Jake. You don’t have to worry.”
“I’m always worrying about you, sweetheart,” he admits, settling on the steps beside you where Bob had once been.
Natasha nods her head towards the double doors, beckoning Bob to follow and give you two a moment of privacy. She knew from the moment she saw you clam up in the meeting hall that it had to do with Jake and Miss Sigma Nu. The way your stare locked onto the two and didn’t break until her and Bob practically dragged you away was enough of a clue. She just hoped Jake hadn’t done anything stupid, otherwise he’d have to deal with her.
Silence between you and Jake was never uncommon, however it was also never this unsettling. Jake knew the second you disappeared from his view that something was wrong. You never left without telling Jake or anyone else first. After asking everyone if they’d seen where you went, he was thankful that Reuben caught Bob and Natasha ushering you outside.
Without a second thought, Jake was on autopilot, dropping everything to get to you. Not even the Sigma Nu who whined about where he was going mattered to him. All he could think about is you.
Jake was wracking his brain for any reason for you to rush out like that. Has he indirectly done something to upset you? Did he forget something important? Were you sick and needed to go home?
You sniffle and wipe at your nose with the back of your hand before facing your back towards him once more. He knew it was something much worse. He hated seeing you cry. After making you cry as many times as he did before you got together, he swore to always be there to wipe them away and kiss you better. But he couldn’t even do that now as you purposely hide yourself away from him.
“That’s the thing. You shouldn’t have to worry about me all the time. You shouldn’t have to constantly keep an eye on me or be conscious of the time because I hate staying up late. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your time out because I get too anxious in crowded rooms. You shouldn’t have…” Another sob climbs its way up your throat. “You shouldn’t have to deal with me.”
Jake’s heart breaks at your confession and he’s desperate to understand where these thoughts are coming from. Just a moment earlier, you were smiling and laughing at his antics which is why your change in demeanor took him off guard. Despite wanting to beg you to tell him what was going on in that head of yours, he knew that you needed some time. He took your trembling hand in his, intertwining your fingers and softly stroking the skin of the back of your hand in the way he knew you loved.
He bites his tongue and patiently waits for you to open back up to him. Tremors from the soft breeze continue to make your body shake so he pulls off his suit jacket and drapes it around your shoulders.
You unconsciously snuggle into its warmth, breathing in the familiarity of Jake’s cologne before falling onto his shoulder and burying yourself into the crook of his neck.
“You deserve to be with someone who isn’t dragging you down all the time,” you voice into the skin of his neck.
Your words are muffled but he hears you all the same. “What? What’re you talking about?”
You shake your head, sniffing once more. “It’s just… that Sigma Nu girl that approached you earlier? She was talking to me before that. Saying something about how you could have anyone you want and all that stuff. Then she went up to talk to you–”
“And you didn’t stop her?” Jake asks with amusement and curiosity.
“No, well, I tried but I couldn’t get the words out. You know?”
Jake nods in agreement knowing exactly what you meant. “Then what happened?” He coaxes gently.
“Then I saw her with you and Javy and everyone else. I think I understood what she meant then about you having anyone you want. She just looked so perfect with you all, like she belonged there and you looked so good together that I couldn’t help but think that maybe you deserved someone like that. Someone who isn’t a burden. Someone who fits into your world better.”
He frowns, and holds you closer with his free arm. “You know I love you more than anything, right?” You remain silent so he repeats himself again. “Right?”
You hum.
“Then you should also know that you’re my world. You.” He pulls away for a moment to get a good look at your tear stained cheeks and wide eyes staring up at him. “I don’t care if she looked perfect or if she fit right in. I don’t care about any of that stuff. As for having anyone I want, I’ve already got the one I want right here. It’s you Ace. From the moment we met, it's always been you.”
“But–”
“You’re not dragging me down. Don’t you ever think that because you’re the one who’s keeping me afloat. I mean, seriously, I probably would’ve flunked out by now.” A dry laugh escapes him.
You nudge him in the ribs. “Hey, what did we say about self talk?”
He smiles down at you. “You see what I mean? You won’t even let me talk bad about myself so what makes you think I’ll let you get away with it?”
“I’m sorry,” you squeak. You’re feeling better already, but you still aren’t completely convinced.
“Don’t be sorry, just believe me will you?” Releasing his hold on your hand he tilts your chin upward so he can get a better look at you. “Loving you is not a burden. Loving you is…” He pauses for a moment, trying to find the perfect words to articulate how he feels about you. “Loving you is easy. I never thought I’d be one to fall in love but you made it so easy that I didn’t even realize I did until I almost ruined any chance I had with you.”
“Jake…” Your eyes are welling with tears again. Not from sadness, but rather from the overwhelming feeling of gratefulness and love for the man in front of you.
“Oh, sweetheart,” he gingerly cups your face in his hands, wiping at the tears on the apples of your cheeks. “Loving you is the easiest thing I’ve ever had to do. I love you, Ace.”
Pressing forward, your lips land on his and he could taste the salt from your tears as they continue to fall but he doesn’t care. You try to pull away, but he chases your lips and brings you back to him.
You giggle at his eagerness but push him back softly by the chest. You had to say what you’ve been dying to say all night. You were afraid you were going to burst any second now if you didn’t. “Loving you is the easiest thing I’ve ever had to do too, Jake. I love you.”
The smile that graces his features is brighter than all the stars in the night sky as he rests his forehead against yours.
“Easier than your statistics class?” He jokes.
You press another kiss to his lips with a smile. “Even easier than that.”
Learning to accept that you alone were enough and worthy of Jake’s love would take some time, but you knew with Jake by your side, he would make it all a little easier.

As extravagant as Jake could get with date night, he knew that you also loved a casual night in.
Take-out, a movie or two, and your pajamas was all you wanted as long as it was in the company of your boyfriend.
When Jake saw just how exhausted you were after your last round of classes for the day, he knew that a night in was exactly what you needed.
“I am so full right now,” Jake sighs as he sinks further into the leather cushions of your couch.
You scoff, following suit. “I have never seen someone devour so many crab wontons at once.”
Jake laughs, nudging you gently in the side. “You’re one to talk. One second I was grabbing some chow mein, the next the entire box was empty!”
Joining in on his laughter, you slide underneath his arm and muzzle into his side. With a tight arm holding you in place.
He feels your body get a little heavier in his arms and he looks down to see your eyes already fluttering shut. Jake traces a finger lightly down the bridge of your nose. You scrunch your nose in that adorable way that he loves and he presses a kiss to your head with a heart full of love.
You intertwine your fingers with his that lay gently on your belly.
“I thought you wanted to watch that new true crime documentary,” he comments.
You shake your head. “Too tired.”
“Alright, sleepy head, let’s get you to bed.” Jake tries to get up but your arms squeeze tighter around his waist.
“No, stay,” you whine. In any other circumstance you would’ve felt pathetic. But your boyfriend was just too comfortable and warm that you didn’t want him to move.
Jake settles back into his position, hesitantly. “Bob and Mickey are gonna kill me if they find me asleep here.”
“Oh, please, they let Javy sleepover all the time.”
“You sure?”
“Promise. Now shhh… I’m trying to sleep,” you mumble into the skin of his neck.
A hushed chuckle leaves Jake’s lips as he gives you a soft peck on the forehead. “Love you, Ace.”
You sigh happily in his embrace. “Love you more, Seresin.”
Jake waits until he feels your breath even out before finally closing his eyes. He could never fall asleep before you, always one to make sure you were safe and sound first.
“Not possible,” he finally whispers into the night.
Had you been awake to hear him, he knows you’d argue with him until your throat goes dry. Jake finds it endearing how adamant you are that you love him more. You could argue all day about it. He doesn’t doubt that you love him, he just thinks there’s no way you could love him more than he loves you—his perfect girl.
Knowing he got the last word in your playful little argument, though unfairly, Jake finally allows himself to drift off into a restful sleep.

Your first night out of the hospital was the best you’ve felt in days. After Jake’s conversation with your parents, things between the two of you began to go back to the way it used to be. There was still the need to talk about what happened between you but for now, Jake’s biggest concern was your recovery.
Jake has always been incredibly protective of you. Even before you got together, it was something in his DNA that had him always on high alert whenever you were around. Now, those senses were heightened by one hundred upon your release from the hospital.
You were doing better, you even looked better but Jake was still afraid to let you out of his sights. Your left arm was still in a cast and your knee was still sprained. Your bruises were still very evident and extremely sensitive. Jake hated watching you wince in pain every time you did something as effortless as breathe.
Jake was carefully buckling your seatbelt when he heard your breath hitch. “Shit, sweetheart, did I hurt you?” His eyes skim over your body.
You grab hold of his hand to keep it steady on your waist, noticing his abnormally clammy skin. You hated that you were causing him to worry so much. “No, you didn’t. Just sensitive, is all.”
“I’m sorry, baby,” he frowns, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead.
“Nothing to be sorry for,” you whisper in reply. You can feel the last of your pain medication wearing off, signaling that you may need to take another dose when you get back to the apartment.
Jake only nods, despite the string of apologies that threaten to spill from his lips. He has apologized to you at least a thousand times since you woke up and each time you told him the same thing. But seeing you like this, in pain because of him, broke his heart.
You fell asleep before Jake even backed out of the hospital parking lot. The entire drive back to your apartment, he keeps a hand on your knee. A reminder that you came back to him.
Pulling into the front of your complex, Jake hurriedly puts the car in park before grabbing the wheelchair from the hospital in the back of his truck. He swiftly unfolds it and wheels it to the passenger side. Opening the door, he softly coaxes you awake.
You groan and flutter your eyes open to see Jake softly looking down at you.
The journey from the car to the apartment was full of arguments and shared looks of disapproval from the both of you. You were trying to convince Jake that you could wheel yourself, while Jake adamantly refused. After a minute of going back and forth, you finally let him have his way, knowing he wasn’t going to let up any time soon.
Upon entering the apartment you’re met with all your best friends gathered in the living room under a poorly executed banner that said, “Welcome Home, Ace!”
You giggle at the lopsided writing and oddly sized lettering, making the banner look like it was written by a seven year old. You reckon that was done by Mickey due to the way he sheepishly stares down at his feet when Jake comments on the artistry.
Natasha gathers you in her arms in an instant barely giving Jake enough time to close the front door. “It’s so good to have you back here.”
“It’s so good to be back,” you sigh into her shoulder.
She lets you go in favor of helping Jake bring your bags from your hospital stay into your room.
Bob is the next one to greet you with tears in his eyes.
You squeeze his hand with a soft smile. “Oh, Bobby.”
“Sorry, I just missed you.” Bob blushes at his confession.
“Missed you too,” you grin and playfully pinch his cheek.
“Thank goodness you’re back. I haven’t watched any new episodes of The Mandalorian yet because I was waiting for you to come home.” Mickey smiles as he comes to greet you.
“Fanboy, you are just the sweetest.”
He nods proudly at your words.
“No he is not. I came over here last weekend to help with some cleaning and I saw him start season three!” Reuben interjects with a playful slap to Mickey’s back.
“Dude!”
You tsk in faux disappointment. “And I thought we were friends, Mick.”
Reuben laughs and brings you in for a hug, whispering in your ear that he’ll watch it with you instead—to which Mickey takes full offense.
Just as Javy goes in for a hug of his own, Jake comes back into the room and stands behind you.
“Careful, Javy,” he says pointedly. “Watch her ribs.”
Javy snorts. “Geez, sorry dad.”
You laugh at the two of them and roll your eyes.
Bradley is the last to approach you and you open your good arm in a warm welcome. “Hey, Chicken.”
“You’re just saying that because I can’t get you back right now!” He groans into your shoulder.
You smile and shrug innocently. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yeah, whatever,” he shakes his head.
You feel Jake place a hand on your shoulder and you look up at him with a grateful smile.
It really did feel good to be home.
_________________
The rest of the night was spent with an incredible home cooked meal by Natasha and joyous laughter as you enjoyed some time with the people you loved most.
You moved from the wheelchair to the couch, settling in beside Jake as best you can as he used his own legs to prop up your sprained knee.
He checked up on you every once in a while. Making sure you were comfortable and drinking water. When the laughter got a little too hard to stop, it made your ribs ache and he noticed right away whenever you went to clutch at your side.
Jake would scold the group for making you laugh too hard which resulted in another round of endless teasing from them.
As the night finally wound down, the boys began to clean up the kitchen area while Natasha brought you to your room to help you redress your wounds and get ready for bed.
Nat and you sat on your bed in comfortable silence as she brushed your hair gently. Your eyelids feel heavy at her soft gestures and you almost find yourself slipping into sleep until she breaks the silence.
“Why didn’t you come talk to me?” She questions, hurt evident in her words. “Why didn’t you just talk to me instead of going to that party?”
You swallow harshly, feeling guilty for making all your friends worry about you. At the time, you weren’t in your right mind. With everything going on you didn’t want to become another burden for them to bear. Like your parents had told you so many times before, you didn’t want to become an inconvenience. Though, you knew that was hardly an excuse for your rash behavior.
“I’m sorry,” you tell her softly, turning to look at her. “I know I should’ve come to talk to you about everything instead of dealing with it on my own. I shouldn’t have done what I did. I—“ You pause to inhale deeply, feeling a sharp pain in your chest from the bruises on your ribs.
Nat smooths your hair back with a sad smile, shushing you gently. “It’s okay, don’t push yourself too hard.”
“It’s not okay if my actions ended up hurting everyone. Especially…” You stop once more to catch a break.
“Especially Jake?” She finishes for you. There’s no malice or judgment in her tone, just pure observation and understanding.
You nod. “Especially him. If I could I would take it all back in a heartbeat. I would’ve come to you for advice instead of dropping it on you through a text message. I would’ve talked to him instead of running away.”
Nat hums in understanding. She was one of the few people who really understood you. She may have been a little hurt by your decisions, but she knows none of it was done with ill intentions.
Seeing you beat yourself up like this hurts her, so she tries her best to soothe your self blame and guilt. “But he’s here now, Ace. You are so incredibly lucky that he loves you the way he does. I mean, sure, you guys fought and it led to something terrible. But he came back, he’s here and it doesn’t look like he’s leaving any time soon.” Grabbing your hand, she pulls you into another embrace. “And neither am I.”
“I love you, Nattie.”
“I love you too, Ace.”
The door opening brings the two of you apart and you’re met with Jake’s teasing smile.
“Making moves on my girl, Natasha? I’m telling Javy,” Jake crossed his arms over his chest.
Nat rolls her eyes, getting up from the bed. “Oh please, you and Javy are practically married,” she retorts, making you huff out a breath of laughter.
With one last squeeze of your hand she gives you and Jake a soft goodnight before exiting the room.
Seeing Jake freshly showered and changed into his pajamas as he stood into your room, almost brought tears to your eyes. The last time you remember him being in your room was the night you fought. Seeing him like this made your heart skip a beat. Nat was right, you were so incredibly lucky to be loved by Jake Seresin.
He walks over to you with a soft smile and gently scoops you up in his arms bridal style, eliciting a soft chuckle from you. “What are you doing?”
Jake nudges the tip of his nose with yours as he continues to move. “Putting you to bed, sweetheart. The doctor said you need to rest up and it is currently 11pm which is definitely past your bedtime.”
You scoff playfully. “Bedtime? Bedtime is for the weak!”
“Which is what you will be if you don’t get some sleep, sweetheart,” he tells you earnestly as he sets you down and begins positioning your pillows just the way you liked it in the hospital.
With your left arm laying gently on your abdomen and your knee resting on another pillow, you bury yourself deeper into the sheets with a content sigh. “God, I missed this bed.”
Jake smiles at you and lays a soft kiss to your forehead. “Clearly. Now sleep, you’ve had a long day.”
Your smile falls as you watch him take a step away from you. “Where are you going?”
“To set up my spot right here.” He taps the linoleum floor with his sock clad feet.
“The floor?” You look down at his feet and back up to him with a look of distaste. “Why are you staying on the floor? There’s plenty of room up here next to me.” You pat the spot next to you.
“I just… I don’t wanna hurt you, Ace,” he confesses.
“Jake, you could never hurt me.”
He wants to believe you. Maybe before everything he would’ve. Now he knew he was capable of doing such a thing and he promised you and himself that he would do everything in his power to never hurt you again.
“I can if I move the wrong way in my sleep. Or if you move and hurt yourself because I’m here. I won’t risk it.” He shakes his head adamantly.
“Jake—“
“Please, baby.” He cups your face in his hands gently. “Give me some peace of mind and let me sleep on the floor. Just so I know you’re safe and away from harm up there.”
“I’m always safe with you,” you sigh and pout. But you comply with consideration of, as Jake said, his “peace of mind.”
As he settles onto his incredibly uncomfortable looking cot on the floor, your own worries start to creep in. “You’ll be here when I wake up, right?”
Jake looks up at you from where he sits on the floor and gives you a reassuring smile. “I promised I’m never leaving you again, didn’t I?”
You nod.
“Then yes, I’ll be here tomorrow and every morning after that.”
Feeling more at ease, you lay back down completely onto your mountain of pillows and wait until Jake turns off the light.
“Goodnight, sweetheart. I love you,” he tells you in the darkness.
Your heart skips a beat just like it does every single time he tells you. “I love you too, Jake.”
Despite Jake being right there next to you, you have never felt so alone. His soft puffs of breath and the occasional car passing by are the only things you could hear. While Jake’s breathing usually gave you a sense of comfort, knowing he was so close yet so far away from you made it hard for you to sleep. Even with him telling you he wasn’t going to leave, there was still the nagging voice in the back of your mind, scaring you with the image of waking up to him being gone.
“Jake?”
You hear him shift and then you receive a reply. “You okay, baby? Do you need something? Are you hurting?”
“No, no I’m okay. I just… Never mind, it's stupid.”
“Nothing you could say can be stupid.” You can hear the smile in his words, but you still feel stupid anyway. “What do you need?”
“Can you hold my hand, please?” You almost feel pathetic saying it out loud.
“Of course,” he breathes. Jake immediately shifts into a sitting position and reaches for your hand that was resting on the edge of the bed. He intertwined his fingers with yours and pressed a kiss against your knuckles. “Better?”
“Much.”
“Good. Now will you get to sleep?”
“I will, promise.”
True to your word, you do. Jake waits until your breaths even out into a familiar pattern of sleep. Even as you drift off into what he hopes is a restful slumber, your grip on his hand stays strong. His neck hurts and his arm is starting to feel like pins and needles, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care. As long as you were comfortable, that’s all that mattered.
Feeling your touch and hearing you breathe wasn’t nearly enough to ease his racing thoughts. He was afraid that if he closed his eyes, you would disappear. Deep down, Jake knew it was irrational—that people didn’t just disappear in thin air. But he had gotten too close to losing you and he never wanted to feel that type of fear ever again.
It hit him then that you were his light in the darkness. His daylight in the cloudiest of storms. His person and the other half of his heart. The one thing he absolutely cannot live without. He knew he loved you more than anything and being faced with the possibility of not being able to tell you again put so many things into perspective for him.
The two of you were young, he knew that. Still in your early twenties and your whole life ahead of you. But he also knew that he never wanted to risk losing you again. You were it for him. He couldn’t imagine himself loving anyone else.
Three years ago, Jake would’ve laughed at the idea of him settling down and finding one girl instead of messing around and being a bachelor for life. Three years ago he couldn’t imagine being in love. Now, he couldn’t imagine life without you.
Bringing your hand to his lips, he gives you another kiss. He keeps your hand against his lips and swears on everything he is, that he is going to marry you someday.
The sureness of his own confession should have scared him, but it didn’t. For once, Jake Seresin had never been so sure of anything in his life.
_________________
Recovery is a bitch. Your body felt like it had gotten run over at least a hundred times. The bruises had gone from their dark purplish hue to a lighter green and yellow color. Your flesh was still tender to the touch, especially near your ribs but it was definitely better than the first day you were released from the hospital. The most annoying of it all, was the constant fatigue and visits to the physical therapist’s office. Stubborn as always, you swore you didn’t need it. Most times, you found the exercise ridiculous. You thought it was a waste of your time. However, Jake made sure you didn’t miss a single appointment.
You spent most of your time in the apartment with Nat, Mickey, and Bob. Bradley, Reuben, and Javy dropped by when they could as well which you were extremely grateful for.
But Jake was the only thing making your recovery bearable. Not once, had he left your side since the hospital. With the final days of exams winding down, Jake was able to give his full and undivided attention to you.
Yet the constant company and loving wasn’t enough to stop yourself from stressing and worrying about where you stood with Jake. Things may have felt normal, but you were afraid that things would break at any moment.
So you kept quiet and hoped he wouldn’t notice that you were slowly losing it on the inside. You should’ve known you couldn’t keep anything from Jake. He could always read you better than anyone else.
The two of you had fallen asleep on the couch after a long day of follow up doctors appointments.
Jake had his arms wrapped snugly around your waist and had you tucked delicately into his side. It took a few days to finally get him to agree to hold you again and now that he was feeling better about it, you never wanted him to stop.
But your throat was feeling dry and you desperately needed a glass of water. So you ever so carefully unravel his strong arms from around you as not to disturb him.
He needed rest just as much as you did. You hate that he hasn’t been taking care of himself as well because of his constant concern for you. It was sweet, but you didn’t need him constantly at your beck and call.
You softly lay his arms on his abdomen and wiggle out from beside him as best you can. You quietly pad over to the kitchen and pull a glass from the cabinet to grab yourself some water.
You barely get to opening the fridge when you hear Jake from behind you.
“Ace! What’re you doing up? Let me get that for you. Sit down,” he groggily exclaims.
You turn to look at him over your shoulder and giggle at his disheveled hair and light pink cheeks.  “It’s okay, Jake. Lay back down. I’m just getting water.”
“No, no, you’re not supposed to be overexerting yourself. Get back here and let me do it.” He’s fumbling over his feet just to get to you.
You extend your one good arm across the  fridge and block what you can with your body. “I’m fine,” you insist. “Besides, I’m hardly lifting a finger.”
Jake rolls your eyes at your stubbornness. “Yeah, you’re lifting a whole arm. Sit down.”
You narrow your gaze at him. “No.”
“Ace,” he scolds you like a father would his child.
“Jake,” you mimic.
“Ace, so help me God, I will move you myself if I have to.”
“You wouldn’t.” You challenge him, despite knowing very well that he would.
“Alright, you asked for it.” Jake walks over and stops right in front of you with bent knees. Hyper aware of your bad knee, he gently cradles your legs before using his other arm to go around your waist. Not a fan of the wheelchair, Jake had gotten used to carrying you around the house this way.
You could easily walk yourself especially with how well physical therapy has been going but Jake insisted that you save your strength.
“Jake!”
He easily brings you to the stool at the kitchen island with a look of disapproval. “You could have woken me up, you know.”
“For someone that is so obsessed with getting good rest, you seem to be doing the exact opposite,” you point out.
“Okay, snippy, watch the tone.” Jake rests his hands on his hips. “What’s going on, Ace?” He moves to slot himself between your parted legs.
You avoid his intense gaze, finding a loose thread on your shirt to pay attention to instead. You didn’t want to tell him you were struggling—with your recovery, your mental health—with anything.
Jake was so great and so incredibly supportive of everything but you needed to do some things on your own. You want the reassurance that you could still be independent. The accident took that freedom away from you.
He gently cups your face in his hands, bringing you back to him. “Talk to me, Ace. I can’t help you if I don’t know what’s wrong.”
You shake yourself out of his grip, angling your back towards him. You knew Jake would never judge you, yet you still felt ashamed for being so weak. “Nothing’s wrong, Jake.”
“Bullshit. That’s bullshit and you know it.” He sighs and opens his hands towards you palms up. A silent invitation to let him hold you.
Jake raises his brows, waiting for you to reciprocate. You look up at him and dramatically clasp your hands into his, which he grips in a silent thank you.
“You haven’t been yourself lately, baby. And it’s not just because you’re recovering. There’s something else going on in that head of yours.”
Your heart skips a beat. Jake has always been able to read you better than anyone else.
“So, what’s going on? What can I do to make it better?” He practically begs.
Your sweet boy, always wanting to make things better for you. Squeezing his hands tighter, you release a shaky breath. “I’m afraid there’s nothing you can do.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean,” you pause as you try to explain to him what you’ve been feeling. “Before I tell you, I need you to know that none of this is your fault. You hear me?”
“Ace—“ He starts with worry flooding his features.
“Jake.” The look on your face quiets him down.
Running a hand through his already disheveled hair he reluctantly complies. “Yeah, okay.”
You close your eyes. You couldn’t look at him as you explained yourself. You wouldn’t be able to control the tears if you looked at him. “I’m lost, Jake. I’m so fucking lost and I don’t know how to find myself again. After coming back from the accident, I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
Jake’s expression morphed from worried to pained in an instant.
“I’m drowning in this vast sea of nothingness all the time and I don’t know what to do to fix it. I don’t know how to fix things.” Your tears are free flowing as you bear your soul to him.
His heart fractures in two to hear what you’re going through. “What’s there to fix, baby?”
“Everything, Jake. Me, my grades, our relationship, my parents, all of it. Nothing is the way it should be. I’m not the way I should be. And I know you told me to focus on my recovery. I’m trying. But it all just feels wrong.” You don’t know how else to describe the hollowness in your chest to him without
Taking his hands from your grip, he plants them firmly on your hips as he slides you further to the edge of the stool so you could wrap your legs around his waist. Jake shakes his head and kisses you on the nose. “I know you’re trying and I am so proud of you. Don’t worry about your parents and your grades right now. We’ll deal with it when we get there.”
“We?” You choke out meekly.
He continues with a lovesick smile. “Yes, we. As for us, there’s nothing to be fixed between us. I know we never talked about it in detail, but baby, I forgave you the second I walked out that door.”
He kisses away your tears as they continue to flow down your cheeks. “I just wish I was there for you sooner. I wish I could fix this for you. If I could, I would carry the weight of it all on my shoulders. But Ace, if lost is what you are, then I will find your missing pieces. I will be by your side, helping you figure out what you lost.”
The heavy pressure on your chest gives way. No one has ever cared for you the way Jake does. No words could describe just how much you loved him. If there was any other way you could express your gratitude for the boy, you would.
In that moment, words fail you, and you resort to showing him how much you love him instead.
You lean up to brush your lips against his, softly at first. The heat in your cheeks heightens at his calloused fingertips sneaking under your shirt and digging into the skin of your hips.
Pulling you closer against him than you thought was possible, he relaxes into your touch as you let your own hands wander to his sun kissed hair.
Jake doesn’t hesitate to let his lips loosen against yours as he kisses you back fervently. Your lips glide against one another, performing motions the two of you knew by heart. Chest to chest, hip to hip, lips against lips, he continues to kiss you like a man desperate for air.
“Ace,” he pulls away breathlessly. “Let me take care of you, please?”
Opening your eyes to be met with the most beautiful hues of green, you nod against him.
With your permission, he takes you upstairs to show you just how much you mean to him.

Intimacy isn’t something you and Jake are unfamiliar with. He has seen you bare and you have seen him in the same state. Physical intimacy, however, was a little more on the reserved side. Earlier on in your relationship Jake had talked to you about boundaries and what you were and weren’t ready for. Still respecting your wishes, no matter how desperately he wanted you, he promised he’d wait until you were ready.
So no, you hadn’t slept together just yet, but the two of you were more than comfortable with being vulnerable with one another.
Sitting in the warm water, you sigh as Jake softly rubs his fingers through your wet hair. The smell of lavender fills the air as the two of you sit together in the bathtub.
The feel of his chest is slippery against your back from the bath soap you had pumped into the tub. Being engulfed in Jake’s scent and his warmth, soothed your aching body.
Your left arm was wrapped securely in a large trash bag as you rested it against the rim of the tub. It wasn’t the most flattering accessory, but it didn’t make the moment any less romantic.
He was gentle as he carefully assessed your body, lathering you with soap. Jake was careful of your injuries, letting his lips show each of them some love. To speed up the healing process, he had said.
You sat contentedly in his arms, feeling closer to him than you have in weeks. You intertwine your free hand with his that rests atop your abdomen, leaning back on his chest and settling into his shoulder.
“You alright, baby?” Jake asks. He’s afraid that your pain medication was beginning to wear off due to your tight grip on his hand.
Bringing your lips to the hinge of his jaw, you breathe, “I’m alright.”
Jake focuses on your steady breaths as the two of you stay in each other’s embrace. He was, quite literally, holding his heart in his hands. You were his entire world, the center of his universe. Everything revolved around you, even if you didn’t know it.
“Thank you for telling me about how you’re feeling,” he says softly into your ear. “I’m sorry you felt like you had to carry all of that on your own.”
You hum in response. “You’ve just done so much for me already, I felt like I had to start doing some things for myself.”
“It’s okay if you’re not ready, Ace. But just know you don’t have to go through it alone. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak. You are so strong—one of the strongest people I know. And if anyone can get through this, it’s you,” he confesses.
“You think so?” You can’t help the hope brewing in your chest and the smile that tugs on your lips.
“I know so. And all of us will be there for you every step of the way. I will be here for you, always. I love you.”
You look up, taking in the glow of his smile.  “I love you too.”
Jake’s love for you was brighter than the sun—golden like the daylight seeping through your bathroom window.
You knew things wouldn’t get better overnight. You knew you still had a long way to go before you were completely healed.
He was the light guiding you through the darkness, just like you do for him. Jake’s warmth would protect you from the cold and bitter storms brewing in the confines of your mind that threatened to drag you down.

Jake knew he loved you long before the two of you actually got together. Now that the two of you have been official for six months, those three little words have been dying to slip off the tip of his tongue.
At first it was easy to keep it in. Having you at a distance and not fully being able to call you his has helped him keep his emotions at bay. Everything has gotten ten times harder since being able to have you completely.
Yet despite the ache and desperation in his heart to say it out loud and shout at the top of his lungs for all of the world to hear, he kept his mouth shut.
Jake knows you’ve had it rough when experiencing love from the people around you. It took you some time to accept that he wanted to be in your life without wanting anything in return. So he didn’t expect you to love him right away either. No matter how much he wanted to tell you how he felt, he knew you needed time.
Even though he was close to bursting at the seams, he would wait. He would forever if he needed to.
So he waited… and waited…and waited.
Until three months later, exactly nine months since you got together, it happened.
You were at The Hard Deck with the rest of your friends. After a stressful week of school and work, you all took a much needed break. And where better than to unwind at your favorite bar? Though constantly inhabited by members of the Navy and their alike affiliates, the bar still felt like home. Your little group was welcomed with open arms and even given a name based on an actual Navy squadron, “The Daggers.”
As you sat on Jake’s lap on one of the stools near the billiard tables, your heart swelled with the feeling of unconditional love for the people around you.
You felt love for Natasha. Your best friend and confidant. The closest person you have to a sister.
You felt love for Javy for being the best support system for both your boyfriend and best friend.
You felt love for Bob, Bradley, Reuben, and Mickey, who always have your back through whatever comes your way.
Most of all, you felt love for Jake. This love was different from the kind you felt for everyone else. This was the kind of love that you felt from your head all the way to the tips of your toes. The kind that you could feel even when he’s far away. The kind you never thought you’d be deserving enough to be given.
In this moment, love was the only thing you could feel. Your heart was begging you to let him know.
Jake’s chest is rumbling against your back as he laughs at Javy’s inability to use a pool cue, despite Nat’s coaching. He’s caught off guard when you suddenly shift on his lap, swinging yourself to the side and hanging off his neck.
You nose gently at his cheek and he grins. Resting your cheek on his temple, you sigh.
Jake’s arm that’s wrapped around your waist tightens at the contact. “What’s going on, sweetheart?”
“Nothing,” you slur happily. “Jus’ love you is all.”
He swears his heart stopped beating. “What did you say?” He’s on high alert now, worried he might have misunderstood you.
“I said I love you.”
He taps your cheek softly, asking you to look him in the eyes. He needs to know that this is real—that what you’re saying isn’t a symptom of intoxication. “Baby, I need you to say it again.”
Your lips quirk up in confusion as you hold yourself up to look at him. “I just did.”
He shakes his head with a playful roll of his eyes. “Humor me, will you?”
Your smile widens. You cup his face in your hands and you only hope he can feel just how much you mean what you’re saying. “I love you, Jake Seresin.”
His shoulders shake in breathless laughter. Jake has never felt so happy and relieved in his life. “I love you too.”
The rest of the bar melted away and it was only Jake and you. Your mind was only full of one thought: Jake. You didn’t see the knowing looks your friends shared nor did you hear Penny ringing the last call bell.
Jake wanted to kiss you so bad but he knew that you weren’t the most comfortable with kissing in public. So he did the next best thing by securing you in his arms and pressing you as tightly to his side as possible.
“I love you. So much,” he emphasizes as he leans into you.
“I love you more.”
He’s rolling his eyes again at your remark. “Not possible.”
With a shrug, you plant a discreet kiss onto the shell of his ear. “Let’s agree to disagree.”

The First Time
Walking around campus felt like a stab to the heart. Everywhere you looked, proud children were going around with their parents in tow. Bright smiles and joyous laughter filled the air in activities you could not participate in.
Family day was quite possibly your least favorite event on campus. It was a constant reminder of the parents you didn’t have. You hated how envious you felt of them all.
Yet every year without fail, you succumb yourself to this same torture of going out to the quad and watching what you didn’t have.
For reasons you didn’t understand, you found yourself desperately wanting this with your own parents. Every single time, you would invite them, hoping they would make it. Every single time, they disappointed you.
This year, Nat asked if you wanted to join her and her parents on their day out but you refused. You loved the Traces, but you didn’t want to intrude on their only time with their daughter. You were also so tired of the pitiful looks you got from your friends’ families every time you saw them.
You would rather suffer in silence than have anyone feel sorry for you. So you threw yourself your own pity party.
Making your rounds through the Hall of Science, someone calling for you stops you in your tracks.
“Ace, hey!”
You knew that voice too well. Clenching your fists, you pull yourself together. You turn to see the blond making his way towards you.
You have to silently remind yourself to be civil because of all the people around.
“Seresin,” you grit out with a practiced grin.
He sends you a charming smile and you hate the way it makes your cheeks warm up. Jake looks over his shoulder for a moment before looking back at you with his eyes glistening with a look you couldn’t describe. “I have some people I want you to meet.”
You send him a questioning look wondering, what could he possibly be up to now?
He looked over his shoulder, beckoning for whoever it was with an enthusiastic wave of his hand.
Nothing could’ve prepared you to be met with a woman whose eyes were an identical shade of green to those looking at you and a man with the same dirt blond hair as the boy in front of you.
“Ace, this is my mom and pops,” he smiles proudly with a hand on his hip as the other pulls his mother into his side.
Shock takes over your system for never, in a million years, did you think Jake Seresin would be introducing you to his parents.
The woman beside him grins with the same smile as her son, dimple and all. The sight is bewildering, seeing the boy you knew as Hangman standing with the people who raised him. You’re not sure what you were expecting but it definitely wasn’t what happened next.
“Oh my goodness, look at you!” Slipping out from under her son’s arm, the woman who you can only assume was Mrs. Seresin. Her voice was sweet as molasses, and her floral perfume flooded your senses.
You’re immediately overcome by the feeling of home as she gathers you in her arms. You want to tear up, not realizing just how touch starved you’ve been. You couldn’t recall the last time your mother hugged you, let alone talked to you because she wanted to.
You didn’t know Mrs. Seresin, but she emitted a feeling of security that made you never want to leave her embrace.
But you stepped away, not giving in to your temptations. You wouldn’t allow yourself to have the satisfaction. You couldn’t.
“You are absolutely beautiful! Jake never mentioned anything about you being this gorgeous!” She gushes over you.
“Ma!” Jake’s cheeks turn a bright shade of red. He rubs a hand down the back of his neck and looks down at the floor.
His reaction makes you giggle. You eye him, almost as if to say You talk about me?
The man holds his hand out to you with a smile of his own. “Pleasure to meet you.” He’s a bit more calm in comparison to Mrs. Seresin who looks close to bouncing off the walls in glee.
Taking his hand, you bashfully grin. “Oh, the pleasure is all mine, sir.”
Mrs. Seresin waves a hand at you, gathering your hands in her own. “Please, call us Thomas and Sandra. There’s no need for formalities, sweetheart.”
Your smile grows at the nickname. It must run in the family.
The Seresin’s invite you to continue walking around with them and though you politely try to decline, Mr. and Mrs. Seresin refused to take “no” for an answer.
So you spent the afternoon with the Seresin’s and, surprisingly, were enjoying yourself. Not once, did Jake nor his parents mention anything about your lack of parents. For that you felt more than grateful.
You were walking ahead with Jake’s father, having a deep conversation about something Jake had no clue about.
Jake feels his mother sidle up beside him. “Ace is a nice girl, don’t you think?”
He hums in response.
“That was nice of you. Introducing us to her and all.” She glances at her son who continues to avoid her eyes. She knew her son all too well. “I’m really hoping this isn’t the last we’ll see of her.”
“Mom,“ he starts. “Whatever it is you’re thinking, it’s not like that.”
Mrs. Seresin raises a brow. “I never said it was. I’m just saying, I think it would be nice to have that girl around more often.”
Jake watches as you laugh at something his father said and smiles. There’s that feeling again. The one he seemed to always get whenever he was around you.
He hears your laughter once more causing his lips to turn upward. He hoped you would be around more often too.
The First (official) Time
“Meeting your parents on campus is completely different from going home with you to Texas to see them!” You exclaim with hurried breaths.
Jake laughs, wrapping his arm around your shoulders and presses a kiss to your temple. “Relax, Ace. They love you.” He pauses and adds, “Not more than I do, of course.”
His declaration doesn’t do much to quell the nerves in your system. Meeting his parents is one thing. Meeting his parents and brother, sisters, nieces, and nephews was another.
“I’ve only met them once, Jake. It’s not possible for them to like me that much already,” you reason. “I mean, what if I embarrass myself? What if your siblings hate me?”
“That’s my Ace. Ever the optimist,” he jests.
You smack him on the chest and try to pull away, only for him to hold you tighter. “Not funny, Jake.”
“Sorry, sorry. I know.” Glancing to his front door and back to your wide eyes he gives you the most comforting smile he can. “It’ll be alright, baby. I promise. You know when you got into that accident, my parents were worried sick. My siblings too! They had me calling to update them every day after you went home.”
“Really?” You ask shyly.
“Really, sweetheart.” He brushed his thumb softly against the scar on your forehead from the crash. A mark that once made you feel insecure, until he showered it with love. “I’ll be right there with you the whole time. Now come on, I bet Ma’s been watching us through the peephole the entire time.”
You chuckle, leaning into Jake’s touch to ease your running heartbeat. Just as he raises his fist to knock on the door, it swings open and you’re met with none other than Mrs. Seresin who’s already grinning from ear to ear.
Jake opens his arms for a hug from his mother, not expecting her to push past him and run straight to you.
Just like the first time, you’re caught by surprise when she wraps you in her arms in a big bear hug. “It’s so good to see you, honey! We’re so glad you could make it out here.”
You laugh at Jake’s bewildered expression as you hug her back. “It’s so good to see you too, Mrs. Seresin.”
She playfully scolds you at that. “Oh, what did we talk about last time? It’s Sandra.”
You correct yourself as you pull away.
“Hi Mom,” Jake adds with an unamused look.
“Jacob, quit standing there and take the bags inside.”
You laugh, feeling more than comfortable in Mrs. Seresin’s presence. “Yeah, Jacob.”
He throws his hands up in exasperation, huffing under his breath about there being more of them now.
Jake trudges behind the both of you as your mom leads you inside. As she shows you to the room you’ll be staying in for the night, she whispers softly in your ear, “I knew you’d find your way back to us.”
You must look confused because she smiled softly and continued.
“When we met you the first time, I had the strongest feeling in my gut that you were going to become part of this family and I was right.”
Your heart warms at her words. You don’t know what to say, feeling shy from the intimacy of her confession. “I… I don’t know what to say.”
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I know I sprung that on you a little fast. I just want you to know that you’ll always have a family with us.” She gives your hand a squeeze and moves ahead to open the door for you.
Jake, who heard the entire conversation, takes your hand that his mom was holding. “See? I told you. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”
“Thank you,” you tell him sincerely.
He can see stars in your eyes and pure happiness in your smile. He loved seeing you like this. He only wanted to ever see you like this forever. “What for?”
“Just… thank you.” You press a soft kiss to his lips which he gladly reciprocates.
He wasn’t sure what you were thanking him for but if it kept you looking like that, then he’d just accept it and hope he could keep you that way.

One of the things Jake loved about you was how easily you got along with the other people he cared about in his life. He loved seeing you get closer to Reuben and share secrets with Javy as you got more comfortable around them. He loved how perfectly you fit into his life. How accepting you were of his friends even before the two of you crossed the line of acquaintances to friends.
Now in a relationship, Jake appreciated it even more. He just wished his heart didn’t drop to the pit of his stomach every time he saw you around Bradley.
Even before you got together, you seemed to get along easily with Bradley. He used to wish that you talked to him the way you did with Bradley. He used to long to hear your laugh and see your smile.
Now he had it all, and yet he still felt himself deflate every time he saw you around his friend. He just didn’t get it. Why couldn’t the two of you have started out that way?
What did Bradley have that he didn’t?
In the end, you chose him. That didn’t stop the annoyance that crept in every time he saw you with his friend.
Jake tore his eyes from the two of you, shaking his head before getting up and making his way over to you.
You’re laughing at something Bradley said when he gets there.
Jake goes tense beside you as he rests his arm around your shoulders. “What’s so funny, Chicken?”
Bradley rolls his eyes at the nickname. “My dad called me Rooster, not Chicken.”
You giggle, watching as the two stare each other down.
“Whatever,” Jake retorts.
You pinch Jake’s side and he yelps in surprise. “Be nice,” you scold.
Craning his neck, Jake continues to eye his friend. He pulls you closer to his side as you share a knowing look with Rooster.
“Jake,” you pat his arm, catching his attention. “I’m gonna go find Natasha.”
He nods, despite his reluctance to let you go. He watches as you walk away with a fond smile on his face. Bradley clears his throat, causing Jake’s smile to fall.
“You know you have nothing to worry about, right? That girl is head over heels for you,” Bradley comments.
Jake crosses his arms over his chest with an irritated sigh. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Bradley continues his rant, dismissing Jake’s attitude. “She was talking about you before you came over here. You’re all she talks about. I mean, Ace is great, but she’s got to find new things to talk about. I’m tired of hearing about your ass.”
That makes Jake laugh and his expression softens at the thought of you gushing about him to others. Jake wasn’t used to being the object of your affections. You’re always shy about your adoration of him, hiding them behind sweet smiles and intertwined hands in public. He never would have thought you were going on about him in secret.
“Really?” He asks Bradley incredulously.
“Really. So quit being so jealous. You know I don’t like Ace like that. Besides, I’ve got my eye on someone else,” he adds.
Jake’s heart skips a beat in even more appreciation for you. He was filled with the sudden urge to track you down and kiss you senseless. But not before teasing his friend about his previous confession. “Wait, what’s that you said about having your eye on someone?”
Bradley’s ears turn bright red. “No one! Nothing, it’s no one…”
“Alright,” Jake shrugs, clearly not convinced. “I’ll just ask Ace to do some snooping around.”
“Jake! Don’t you dare!” Bradley stumbles on his feet as he follows his friend who is already off to find his girl.
“If you don’t tell me, I know Ace will!” Jake shouts over his shoulder.
Bradley groans, knowing how insufferable you and Jake can be when it comes to setting him up with someone. “Yeah? Well I’ll make sure the two of you never find out!”
“Whatever!”
Flipping Jake the bird behind his back, Bradley jogs after him. “Don’t you dare tell her anything, Jake. Jake!”
When you approach him asking about his mystery crush, he silently notes to kill Jake later.

“Dude, stop glaring at them like that,” Bradley whispers harshly into Jake’s ear. “It’s creepy.”
Catching a huff of air from his words, Jake flinches and swats at Bradley’s head who had come right up beside him. “I’m not glaring.”
Bradley rolls his eyes. “I may be an idiot but I’m not blind. You’re staring like you want to murder him.”
Jake ignores his friend’s sassy remark as he continues to observe the way the guy’s eyes drag up and down your body. Jake doesn’t blame him, he knows you’re attractive. He just doesn’t like that at this moment, he’s not the one receiving your attention.
“You know Ace isn’t interested in that tool.” Bradley shakes his head. “Dude, relax. You’re starting to look a little...green.”
His jaw is still clenched as his heart pounds in his chest. He knows that. He knows you wouldn’t do that to him. It’s not that he doesn’t trust you. Rather, it’s the idea that you might realize someone else is a better fit for you than him.
You’ve barely been together officially for a month. It was so fresh, new, and dainty, he was sure you’d change your mind.
He watched as the man’s arm reached out to caress your arm. What the hell does this guy think he’s doing? The thought of you in the hands of another makes his stomach turn. Now that was enough to set him in motion. Jake didn’t need to think twice before shooting up on his feet and striding over to you both.
You’re uncomfortably pulling away from the guy in front of you when he approaches you both.
Jake’s arm wraps around your waist, pulling you taut to his chest. He feels you relax into his hold. You turn around in an instant, a bright smile lighting up your features in his presence. It eases the loud insecurities ringing in his head.
“Come on, baby, your coffee’s getting cold,” he says into your ear, his gaze never leaving the guy opposite of him.
Jake smirks as the guy’s mouth goes slack.
“B-baby?” he stutters.
That charming smile of his works its way onto Jake’s face. “Her boyfriend. Is that a problem?” He raises a brow.
“No, I just thought—“
Jake clicks his tongue to the roof of his mouth. “You thought wrong, buddy. I don’t blame you. Anyone with eyes could see that my girl’s a looker. But that’s just it, she’s my girl.” He pulls you by the hand gently, barely giving the man time to react. “Bye now.”
Too caught up in one another, neither of you notice the embarrassed look on the guy’s face as he scurries off without another word.
You stop in your tracks behind Jake, dumbfounded at what you just witnessed.
Jake stumbles slightly, spinning back around to look at you questioningly.
“Have I ever told you that you look good in green?” You ask with a knowing grin.
“Wha—oh.” The tips of his ears turn bright red knowing he got caught.
You step forward with a giggle. “You’re too cute.”
He wrinkles his nose at that. “Cute? I’m hot, incredibly sexy— handsome even. But not cute. No, never cute. Besides, I wasn’t even that jealous.”
“I have not seen you that jealous since the night you pissed me off after I agreed to go out on a date with Billy,” you point out.
“We weren’t together then.” Jake shrugs, tucking his chin to his chest bashfully. “Thought I was gonna lose my chance with you.”
Your heart melts at Jake’s admission. Even then, the man was a goner for you. Bringing his hand up to your lips, you press a sweet kiss to his knuckles. “Lucky for you, you don’t have to worry about that anymore. I’m yours, remember?”
The fears and insecurities vanish from his thoughts as he revels in just how wrong they really are. He could feel it from your words and in your touch. He almost feels silly for thinking them in the first place.
He bends down, placing a quick kiss to the tip of your nose. “Oh, honey, how could I forget?”

»»————- ♠︎ ————-««
It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Yet, as everything always is with you and Jake, nothing went to plan. Especially when you walked out of the bathroom looking like that.
It’s not like Jake hasn’t seen you freshly showered before. It wasn’t because your skin was glowing and still slightly damp and it also wasn’t because he knew you were definitely wearing nothing under the towel wrapped around your body (although that was a bonus).
It was the fact that you were walking out of your shared bathroom and into your shared bedroom. It was the reminder that you were his and he was yours. That the two of you finally saved up enough to move in together.
The thought alone sent shivers of pleasure down his spine. Imagine how he felt actually living it.
The rest of it was a blur. His clothes and your towel were scattered across the room within seconds—the both of you thrown into bouts of pleasure than only the other could provide.
Did he regret it? Of course not. He could never regret you. He just wished things could’ve been more romantic. This was not what he had in mind for your first time.
Your muffled giggles pull him from his post orgasmic haze.
“What?” He questions. His lips quirk up with an amused smile.
You continue to giggle, pressing your nude body to his side.
His arm wraps tighter around your waist as he kisses the top of your head.
“Oh my god, now I get why you were so popular in college.” You look up at him with a teasing grin, wrinkling your nose.
Jake groans, burying his face into your hair. “Ace…”
“I’m serious! Now I can say I’ve officially been conquered by Jake Seresin himself. Make all those girls jealous.” You gently tap your finger to the tip of his nose with a dopey grin.
Jake slips out from under you with a breathy laugh. You whine at the loss of contact only to settle upon realizing he’s only shifting positions. He props himself up on his elbows and looks down at you with what can only be described as love in his eyes.
He brushes a stray strand of hair from your face. “Please don’t compare our first time to that. This was supposed to be romantic.”
You snort, teasingly pinching the bare skin of his shoulder. “This was your idea of romance?”
He responds with a nip of his own to your thigh, making you squeal. “Obviously not. I just wish things were more perfect. I wish I had more self control so I could’ve made the moment more romantic, you know? Candles, rose petals on the bed sheets…”
“Careless Whisper and body oil? Yeah, no thanks.” Trailing your fingertips down his muscular biceps, you reach down to lace one of your hands with his. “It doesn’t need to be romantic.”
“Yeah, but you deserve your first time to be perfect.”
“It doesn’t have to be perfect.” You coax him to lay his body weight on you. His head now rests on your chest and you faintly run your hands through his golden hair.
Jake shakes his head with a pout. “Everything’s gotta be perfect for my girl.”
“Oh, honey everything already is, as long as I’m experiencing it with you.” You tilt his chin up slightly so he’s able to see how serious you are.
“God, I love you,” he sighs before pressing a soft kiss to your plush lips.
You moan into his touch as your mouths dance in familiar synchronization. What once started as sweet and loving turned heated and passionate with just one touch of Jake’s hand to your breast.
He gently palms at your skin, sending a sweltering heat between your thighs. Your mouth falls open at his repeated motions and you think to yourself, How the hell did you get so lucky?
Pulling away, you pant out hurriedly, “Prove it.”
The smirk on his face makes your heart flutter. “Oh, I plan on it, sweetheart.” The bright green of Jake’s eyes turns a darker shade at your words and suddenly you can feel him everywhere.
You're gripping onto his shoulders tightly with your head thrown back in pleasure as his lips make their way down your neck.
“Wait,” push him back just a little.
His lust filled eyes soften in concern.
“I almost forgot.” You rest your hand right on his heart—the heart that beats just for you—and smile. “I love you too.”
The grin that adorns his face is enough to let you know that you were in for a long night.

“No.”
The second you got the book off the shelf, a small puff of dust cleared to reveal the last person you wanted to see on the opposite side of it. Bright green eyes, sparkling with mischief met yours, causing you to roll your eyes in exasperation.
“No,” you say again, this time with more conviction than the last.
The boy on the other side, still slightly crouched down to meet your gaze, rests his arm on the shelf above. “Oh, come on Ace, don’t be like that.” His southern drawl infuriates you, fueling the already existing annoyance you hold for him. He flashes you a grin you liked to call Jaws. With the way he displays his teeth in an attempt to prey on innocent girls made the name feel fitting. Everytime he used that look, the girls would all come running.
But no, not you. You weren’t falling for this one. You give him the finger with an unimpressed stare. “Get lost, Seresin.” You turn on your heel, leaving him gaping like a fish out of water in the aisle beside you.
Persistent as always, Jake Seresin follows the sound of your footsteps meeting you at the junction where both bookshelves end. Just as you turn right he makes a sharp turn left, making you yelp and almost lose your footing. He catches you with gentle hands on your waist, giving you a soft squeeze that makes your heart skip a beat. No, nope, you were not entertaining this, you mentally scold yourself. Your narrowed gaze and furrowed brows have Jake reluctantly letting go of you. He holds his hands up in surrender before turning his shoulder and letting you walk past him.
He continues to trail you, however, looking like a lost puppy with his wide eyes and pouty lips. “We could always share that copy.” He gestures to the book in your hand.
“Over my dead body,” you snark back.
Jake shakes his head in amusement. “But you took the last one.”
“Ever heard of Amazon, Hangman?” The unofficial nickname of his slips from your lips with a smirk. Now you were just intentionally trying to get on his nerves.
He huffs behind you, rolling his eyes. “No one calls me that, you know.”
Looking over your shoulder in satisfaction, you send him a lopsided smile. “Oh really? Because Reuben told me otherwise.”
His brows furrowed and a flash of heat flooded his cheeks. “Since when do you talk to Reuben?”
You shrug. “Why, you jealous?”
Jake scoffs, stuffing his hands into his pockets in defeat. Of course he was jealous. He wasn’t gonna tell you that, though. “No, I just didn’t know you two were close like that.”
“We’re friends, Seresin, of course we talk.”
Even as you make your way to the checkout counter, Jake still continues to stay on your heels. You try to ignore the way he stands directly behind you with his chest nearly leaning against your back. His familiar scent surrounds you and so does the warmth radiating off his body. Your stomach feels like it just took a deep dive from the peak of a roller coaster and you swallow harshly, trying to deplete the feeling.
With your back turned to him, you don’t see the way he shifts nervously on the balls of his feet. “And what about us? Are we…friends?” He dips his toes trepidatiously into the pool.
A dry laugh leaves you. Turning to face him, you pose with a faux look of deep thought. “I guess it depends on the day.”
He throws his arms up in offense, watching you giggle and grab your book as you walk away. Still, he continues to follow you to an empty table all the way at the back of the library. Jake’s eyes never leave your figure as you weave your way through the various desks and students around you. You tend to have that effect on him, putting Jake in a trance the second he knows you’re near. He forgets exactly where and when he is, the only thing to exist being you.
It has been four months since you had been grouped with him and Bradley for that project in Professor Mitchell’s English class. Four months since Jake Seresin became part of your life. To think that the two of you have been going to the same college for almost three years now and not once has he ever spoken to you. Then Professor Mitchell happened, and Jake thanked his lucky stars that he did. Professor Mitchell was the reason he met the person he swore he was going to become best friends with one day. Though he hasn’t quite reached that status yet, he liked to think he was getting closer and closer each day.
Since day one, something about you has captivated him. It wasn’t like he didn’t know who you were, he remembers you as the girl in his Freshman History class who embarrassed your professor by catching the inaccurate information being taught. You were constantly on his radar, meanwhile earning a reputation for yourself amongst your fellow peers: bitch, stuck up, priss, were a few of the terms used to describe you. Jake never thought of you that way, but he never stood up for you when others threw those insults in your face either.
Then the group project happened, becoming his right of passage to redeem himself and satisfy the curiosity he held for you.
He sits beside you at the old wooden table, cringing as the sound of the chair scraping the hardwood floor echoes through the soft chatter of the library. A few students turn his way with irritated stares and he mouths a lousy Sorry, before sinking in his chair. Jake catches the small smile that pulls at the corners of your lips and one of his own spreads across his features. He took the way you settled in beside him as a good sign.
“So…” he drums his fingertips against the table top.
You’re flipping through Jane Eyre while trying not to be too distracted by the blond beside you. You could feel his eyes on you and smell the laundry detergent of his clothes and a faint whiff of cinnamon that was stamped onto his skin. Jake’s ability to sway your concentration without even trying bothered you just as much as his presence did.
The incessant taps of his fingers on the wood makes you snap towards the boy. You huff in annoyance upon realizing that he really wasn’t planning on leaving any time soon. “Fine,” you relent, pushing the book so it’s nestled between the two of you. “But you better not interrupt my groove, Seresin.” You point a finger scoldingly at him.
He chuckles, giving you a mock salute. “Yes ma’am.” Taking out his own copy of Professor Mitchell’s handout and his blue ballpoint pen, Jake kindly lets you set the pace in completing the assignment. Though he will admit his attention was on everything but that.
Jake found himself captivated by the small crease between your brows as your fingers delicately skimmed the words on the page. Your other hand taps softly against the sheet of paper. You felt so close and yet so far all at the same time. His heart was tugging in his chest like a magnet, blatantly reaching out for you. He was sitting close enough to you for him to touch. He let his leg rest right beside yours under the table, the urge to press his thigh up against yours was tempting. So was the desire to curl his hand around your own.
He hadn’t even realized that he was leaning into you until you turned your head to look at him. The tip of your nose almost brushes his when he meets your eyes. You quirked your head to the side, questioningly.
“What?” He croaks.
You shake your head with a small huff of amusement. “Aloof as always, Seresin. I asked if I could flip to a different page.”
Jake reluctantly pulls back, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah, yeah go ahead.”
You raise a brow. “You sure? Doesn’t look like you’re quite done with question one,” you gesture to his blank page.
The tips of his ears turn an endearing shade of strawberry pink at your observation. “Well, I–” He stutters, unsure how to justify himself.
An exaggerated sigh leaves your lips as you scoot yourself closer, your knee gently knocking into his, sends an eruption of butterflies to your stomach and his. “Here.” You drag your finger down the page. “I have for the first time found what I can truly love–I have found you. You are my sympathy–my better self–my good angel–I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my center and spring of life, wraps my existence about you–and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.”
Your words are like music to his ears, the passage embedding itself in his brain and in his heart.
His silence unnerves you, and you suddenly feel self conscious. Heat spreads to the apples of your cheeks and down your neck. Clearing your throat, you break your gaze from his, scooting further back. “That’s the, uh, the answer to number one.” You wipe your damp hands onto the fabric of your jeans.
“Got it, thanks,” Jake replies, already missing the comfort of your touch.
You abruptly jump to a stand, suddenly feeling ill. You blamed it on getting too close to Seresin. You don’t think you could be around him for much longer. “You know what? You can keep this copy, actually. I think I’ll just work on this some other time.”
“Ace, are you sure? We can just–” Jake starts.
Hastily throwing your stuff in your bag, you barely give him a second look. “It’s fine. You can use it for now. I’ll just grab Bob’s copy or something.”
He doesn’t know what he did to make you uncomfortable, but the way you packed up your stuff in a flustered haze made his chest ache. Right when Jake thought he was getting somewhere with you, he somehow managed to blow it once again. He has already pushed his luck too far with you today, so he reluctantly complies and lets you go.
He nods but not before asking, “I’ll, um, will you be at the bonfire next weekend?”
You weakly smile at him from over your shoulder. “We’ll see.”
He can work with that. Jake gives you a reciprocated smile of his own with blooming hope that he will see you again soon. That previous tugging in his chest intensifies as your figure disappears. As he watches you go, your words from Jane Eyre ring in his ears: “a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my center and spring of life, wraps my existence about you.”
Jake doesn’t understand why he was so obsessed with wanting you to like him. Maybe it was because he longed for your sweetness and gracious heart to be extended to him just like it was to everyone else. Or maybe it was just because he couldn’t stand the thought of you being the first girl to not fall for his charms. Either way, he was adamant to let this desire consume his entire existence until he could make it right.

catch up with jake and ace here!
»»————- ♠︎ ————-««
When you heard from Jake that he and Javy were taking over date night, you were worried. You loved the guy, you really did, but Jake and Javy together only meant one thing: chaos.
Nat brought up the idea of going on a double date with her and Javy and you were more than happy to start planning with her. Jake and Javy, however, were set on doing it all themselves.
“Our girls deserve the best.”
“Yeah, let us do the work this time. Break gender norms and all that.”
The second those words left their mouths you knew this was going to be a recipe for disaster.
“So tell me again, how did the fire start?”
Natasha rolls her eyes with an exasperated sigh as you stand beside her with your hands on your hips.
“Well, Mr. Officer, sir,“ Jake starts. “Have you ever been in love?”
You groan, slapping your palm to your face. “Oh my god.”
Javy, always the loyal best friend, backs Jake up. “The fire started in our hearts for these lovely ladies right here.” He winks at the both of you. “We were supposed to be having a romantic double date dinner right here in the apartment. Homemade gnocchi, a bottle of wine and candlelight dinner when…well.” He gestures to the evacuated building.
“We didn’t mean to set the rag on fire.”
“But instead of putting the fire out you…” The fire fighter glances between the two.
“They threw the rag towards the window,” you sigh. “Right at the curtains setting those on fire too.” You look at Jake pointedly and he shrugs sheepishly.
The man raises a brow. “Right. You four are lucky there’s not much damage that was done to the place. Landlord isn’t too happy about it though.” He nods to your apartment landlord who has a clear look of distaste at the group of you.
He thanks the four of you for your time before checking in with your landlord.
Just as he leaves, you smack Jake on the arm while Natasha smacks the back of Javy’s head.
“We just moved here!” You exclaim, clutching onto Jake’s arm. “And here you two go, causing trouble.”
Jake buries his nose in your hair. “I’m sorry, baby.”
“We just wanted to do something special.” Javy wraps an arm around Natasha who once again rolls her eyes.
A hint of a smile graced her lips as she says, “You guys are idiots.”
“Yeah but we’re your idiots,” Jake winks.
You laugh, finally letting out your amusement in the situation. Pressing a kiss to his cheek, you smile. “Yeah, yeah you are.”
