La gran tradición del atletismo de Hungría
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Criminal Macabre: The Big Bleed Out #1
Tumblr media
Criminal Macabre: The Big Bleed Out #1 Dark Horse Comics 2019 Created & Written by Steve Niles Illustrated by Gyula Németh Lettered by Nate Piekos of Blambot     A noir tale of mysteries, vampires, love, and betrayal. Supernatural detective Cal McDonald, found wandering the streets as a disheveled vagrant, is ripped from his self-imposed retirement to resume his monster-killing career. But Cal is reluctant to return to the fray. What has the hard-bitten investigator so shaken? It's a long story that begins with a beautiful woman who happens to be a vampire . . . and ends with a bang.     I am thrilled beyond belief that Cal and Mo'lock are back! One of my all-time favourite series so I may be a tad biased here but that's okay because I am here to talk about books I love and that you should be reading. On that note if you've never read anything of the previous arcs that's okay because Steve is a master of making each arc individual and new reader friendly so you can easily pick this up and find yourself getting lost in their world. That we see these characters constantly grow, evolve and change with each circumstance and situation they find themselves in. So yeah this really is a great opportunity to just jump on board.     I love the way that this is being told. From the opening that starts off the story and how it takes us into the main story is extremely well done. It has that interest factor that makes you want to see and know more about what's going on here. The story & plot development that we see here through the sequence of events unfolding before us as well as how the reader learns information is sensationally well done. The character development is phenomenal and as you turn the page we learn more and more about them. The pacing is strong and easy feeling that allows the twists and turns come out to the reader creating this nice ebb & flow. This is just so well structured that there isn't a moment that you don't find yourself without something interesting to learn.     Also there is something great about seeing Mo'lock in action here and being not only the kind of friend he is but that's he's pretty amazing in his own right. After all he's a ghoul right and he's Cal's partner and friend so it's nice to see him as the kind of glue that holds things together. This added dimension to the story is utterly fantastic.     The interiors are freaking amazing to see. The linework is bloody brilliant in how we see the utilisation of the varying weights to bring about the attention to detail. I love seeing the individual faces and facial expression more so in the opening when we see a lot of homeless folks. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a talented eye for storytelling. I'll say this the colour work is interesting to see. I loved the opening grey tones that was beautifully done. With the addition of colour we get those pops that work in such interesting ways.      This is a beautifully done first issue in how we meet the characters and see how the meat of the story is going to be. It engages the readers' mind and imagination with these touches of humour that are subtle and well timed. The pacing with how it brings everything to us really does take the reader on the beginning of a journey there's no escape from and you don't want to. The blend of characters, species, races or whatnot is impeccably done and turns the city of Angel's into a much more intriguing place to be.

November 9th marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Tumblr media
I’d like to tell you the story of how it happened, because like all good stories from history, it is at once touching, dramatic, tinged with screwball comedy, and ultimately makes an event which at the time seemed impossible, now seem inevitable.
(All links on this post go to Wikipedia pages, except the ones that say [watch], which take you to YouTube videos of contemporary footage.)
The story of how the Berlin Wall fell really begins the night it was built, August 12th - 13th, 1961.  News cameras were present, and in a time before satellite communications, the press hurried to fly the footage to the western hemisphere the same day – within 24 hours, the whole world knew of the Wall’s construction [watch]. Legally crossing any part of the Iron Curtain from East to West had been extremely difficult for years, and no one was allowed to apply for a travel pass if the Soviet government had the least suspicion that they would defect, but the Berlin Wall instantly became the most infamous and hated symbol of all that was wrong about the Soviet regime, and remained so for the 28 years that it stood. In that time, thousands of brave souls escaped East Berlin by going over or under it, and 138 people died in the attempt.
In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union – let’s just say Head Bitch In Charge for short. The Soviet Union was reeling from three quick changes of leadership – Gorbachev’s three predecessors died in November 1982, February 1984, and March 1985 – and the Afghan War and the arms race with the US had drained it both financially and from a morale standpoint. Gorbachev, young and vibrant (for a Soviet leader), wanted to reform the communist government and save the Soviet Union, and his over-arching policies were Glasnost (transparency and openness) and Perestroika (restructuring of government). The urgent need for reform was made even more glaring after the Chernobyl disaster and the subsequent bungling attempt at a cover-up, which was completely consistent with the way Soviet bureaucrats operated and which worsened the situation considerably.
Gorbachev’s dedication to reforming the Soviet Union meant that uprisings during his time as HBIC were not put down with brutal military force, as had the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the Polish Crisis of 1980-1981 for example. The countries of the Eastern Bloc noticed Gorbachev’s reform mentality, and both their leaders and their ordinary citizens began to slowly but surely test the limits of his leniency.
One of these leaders was Miklos Nemeth. Nemeth was 8 years old when Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to quash Hungary’s nationwide revolution, and in 1989 he was the Prime Minister. In March, he very quietly began to have the barbed-wire fence between his country and Austria (a free western democracy) dismantled.  And what happened in response to this defiance was…nothing. No one came out to fix the fence, and Hungary received no reprimand from the Soviet Union. At that point, the Austrian Foreign Minister, Alois Mock, telephoned the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Gyula Horn. They decided to invite the international press to an event in April wherein both men would themselves symbolically cut part of the barbed-wire fence.
There was just one problem – they had so successfully dismantled the fence already that they had to have a section specially rebuilt just to be destroyed for the ceremony!
Not only did this destruction of a piece of the Iron Curtain pass without incident, in Austria it was considered such a non-event that on the news that night, the lead story was about how to get rid of slugs in your backyard (with cups of beer, they advised). Only after this gardening tip was relayed did the anchor happen to mention what was going on with the border.
Emboldened, that summer Austria and Hungary held a “friendship picnic”—citizens of both countries were invited to chillax and mingle with each other right on the border. In anticipation of this event, the Hungarian government (which up to that point had been responsible for picking up East Germans trying to escape to the West and fly them back home) printed up flyers expressly meant to show East Germans where the picnic was being held so that they could pop over to Hungary (which they were allowed to do) and defect to West Germany via Austria if they cared to. Though many suspected it was a hoax, people were so desperate to leave that they took the chance. In just that one day, more than 900 Germans crossed the border [watch a man carrying his young daughter into Austria].
And still nothing happened! Soon Czechoslovakia was also relaxing their borders. That summer and fall, East Germany was hemorrhaging tens of thousands of people – and the ones who stayed were getting restless. For years, information had been leaking into the Eastern Bloc that the West was not the oppressive hellscape that Soviet propaganda had assured them it was, and the call for reform was growing louder every day. Glasnost and Perestroika were not moving as fast as the people’s desire for liberation, and the Soviet Union needed to stop the flight and unrest of so many people without resorting to military violence.
In November of 1989, it was decided that the best way to do this would be to gradually open a few checkpoints at the Berlin Wall, so that they could at least keep track of everyone who traveling to the West. An East Berlin bureaucrat named Gunter Schabowski was hurriedly tasked with announcing this change in travel regulations to the press. Late in the evening of November 9th, he was given a note to read and hustled out in front of cameras for a live broadcast at around 10 PM.
“When does this policy change take effect?” the press asked. No one had told him when. It was not on the piece of paper he held. Flustered, Schabowski speculated, “Immediately, without delay.” [watch - this is a long video, but skip around to shots of the crowd and see the shocked and bewildered looks on their faces]
This statement was broadcast worldwide, and despite the late hour, East Berliners left their homes and approached the six checkpoints along the Wall within minutes [watch]. For 28 years, anyone trying to get across the Wall had been shot to death by the Stasi (the East German secret police). But tonight, the Stasi knew that the whole world was watching, and in the new geopolitical climate, no one wanted to be the person who ordered their men to start firing on crowds. Instead, they yielded, allowing citizens to cross the border with almost no inspection of travel documents or identification papers.
In addition to this unrestricted crossing, ordinary people also began to hack away at the Wall with hammers and pickaxes. Soon after, the East German government sent bulldozers to dismantle sections of the Wall [watch] to create ten new border crossings, and in just one year, the Wall was gone entirely and Germany was officially reunited.
Gorbachev, today considered to be one of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century, saw out the last days of the country that he loved but could not breathe new life into – on December 8, 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved. Gorbachev resigned on Christmas Day [watch], and as he left the Kremlin, the Soviet flag was lowered and the Soviet national anthem played for the last time [watch].
On this day, please remember that many small people who in many small places do many small things can alter the face of the world, and with every tentative experiment, every lucky twist of fate, even with every accident and blunder, still all of us stumble towards freedom.

In the weary times of blaring news and unrest, watching an event unfold with a happy ending is necessary. Today’s hero is Richard Davis.
Richard’s story starts in the capricious town of Wilmington, North Carolina, where the arts were blossoming.
Filled with a concept of build it and  watch it grow, he opened The Browncoat Theatre, named for his love of Firefly series.  That guerrilla theater established for new writers, actors, set designers, and producers to cultivate their talents. His trust gave way for many in that town who are still thriving in their field.
Not All Heroes Wear Capes
Every superhero’s path cross with an antagonist and true to the genre; Richard and his wife, Amber, were confronted with a considerable one. At their young age, they had to battle an incurable disease that would typically attack older people, that was invading his wife. Feeling helpless and focusing from minute to minute to find ways to fight this villain was draining. Witnessing the most crucial person, your wife slip away takes all the strength you can muster to be there for them. Richard, who filled those around him with energy and encouragement, had nothing left to give. He slowly became a stranger to the theatre just making sure the lights were on, and fridges were full. Our heroes retreated to Knoxville TN, where there was a family network and University Hospital system for them to get a footing on solid ground.
Knoxville’s Friendly Neighborhood Comic Book Shop. We believe in fun, friends & community.
The next chapter. Amber’s journey to normality has been earnest and seeing progress. That motivated the couple to construct a new beginning, and that was the dream of owning a comic bookstore. That dream is Nirvana Comics. Doing what comes naturally, Richard evolved the comic bookstore to a place for family, friends, and community. During the time of Covid19, when most stores closed for two months, he took that time to give Nirvana Comic book store a remodel. In place of laying off his staff, they kept their hours, and then some to provide Nirvana Comics a makeover.
Moody, Gritty, & Original Story
During the time since leaving Wilmington, Richard had written his first comic book, Cult of Dracula, based on the folklore of Dracula mixed with the cult of the Manson Family. He describes the comic as moody and gritty. He stated, “that as a child, two things terrified me: Count Dracula and Charles Manson, and with Cult of Dracula, I follows Stephen King’s advice to ‘write what scares you’ by bringing these two nightmares together.”  With the world shutting down for months, printers stopping the presses and publishers saying that they will not be looking to sign anyone in the near future, Richard was planning the next move for Cult of Dracula. During this time, I was able to read his story thus far. It resembled a screenplay with the depth and detail of each scene, emotion, and character intonation. It is a fresh voice, a new genre, and I found captivating writing. Involving his community opened suggestions for self-publishing, however, costly and the printers could not give a date when they would be reopening. The next thought was to share the idea globally, through Kickstarter and when funded, there would be months before it would have to go to print. During this process, the words matched with the image with artist, Henry Martinez. Henry and Richard both have a cinematic scope towards their work. They both agreed that communication was essential. Henry truly understood the characters and motivation, thus capturing the detailed expressions and the mood of each panel. They formed a dynamic duo at the eleventh hour.
Georges Jeanty’s new cover for Cult of Dracula!
The happy ending moment when fate and Second Sight publishing collide by chance.
Second Sight Publishing announces that it has secured the rights to publish Cult of Dracula! This unique reimagining of Bram Stoker’s classic tale of terror adapted from the award-winning stage play by creator Rich David and that “Cult of Dracula is the perfect vehicle to launch our Second Sight Presents line of horror comics.
Second Sight describes Cult of Dracula, beginning with the grounded sensibilities of a true-crime detective story. Special Agent Malcolm Bram is investigating a tragic event dubbed by the media as the “Cult of Dracula Mass Suicides.” Bram’s investigation serves as a framing device to keep readers grounded as they tumble down the rabbit hole to discover that this weird little cult is much older and much darker than anyone could imagine.
Colorist, Trevor Richardson.
Bram is an original character, a nod to Dracula author Bram Stoker. The remaining cast is re-imaginings from the original novel. Abraham Van Helsing, as an example, is a defrocked Eastern Orthodox priest turned college professor. Together with grad students Mina Murray and Jonathan Harker, he forms a documentary crew working on a film about Robert Renfield, the cult’s enigmatic guru and leader.
Predictions for the future Richard Davis, 100 % percent badass.
“You only have your thoughts and dreams ahead of you. You are someone. You mean something.” – Bruce Wayne, Batman.
Cult of Dracula will be release 7/29/2020 to your local comic store.
Cult of Dracula is available now for pre-order through corner-box.com.
