We Are Neighbors Exhibition Closing & Reading!
UNM's School of Architecture & Planning to host a lunchtime performance.
(Albuquerque, NM) - Photographer Justin Thor Simenson and Poet Hakim Bellamy are the guys next door. After meeting roughly 10 years ago on a Black History Month gallery opening that Simenson was taking Bellamy’s photo for, the pair became community “imagineers” in a neighborhood that neither one of them actually lives in. Simenson works adjacent to the neighborhood featured prominently in their book We Are Neighbors (published by Blurb, 2018). The black and white photographs featured in the book are of homes, curbs, construction and “lawnscapes” in a working class part of Albuquerque east of the University of New Mexico between Nob Hill and Uptown. As a civil designer, Simenson was more interested in the things build, more so than the people who build or live in them. After presenting these photographs to Bellamy and explaining why there were no people in them (when looking at photos with humans in them, humans subconsciously make the human the focus of the frame); Bellamy endeavored to craft flash stories/poems about the lives unseen. This creative exercise of compassion resulted in a book of 24 photo-poem pairings that amount to a mediation on what it means to walk a block in somebody else’s shoes.
This week, the #GuysNextDoor will be sharing these stories, their process and their love for Albuquerque at the exhibit closing in UNM's George Pearl Hall (Rainosek Gallery). Thursday, March 28th at 12pm MST, you can bring your lunch and hear from the Bellamy & Simenson about the process of crafting community through lens and lit(erature). Books will be for sale on site thanks to UNM Bookstore.
Thanks to Professor Katya Crawford, this roughly two month long exhibition shared "a place" with the ArtPlace America Exhibition that was part of the 2019 National Consortium for Creative Placemaking Regional Summit.
ArtPlace America
(ArtPlace) is a ten year collaboration among 16 partner foundations, along with 8 federal agencies and 6 financial institutions, that works to position arts and culture as a core sector of comprehensive community planning and development in order to help strengthen the social, physical, and economic fabric of communities. ArtPlace focuses its work on creative placemaking, projects in which art plays an intentional and integrated role in place based community planning and development. This brings artists, arts organizations, and artistic activity into the suite of placemaking strategies pioneered by Jane Jacobs and her colleagues, who believed that community development must be locally informed, human centric, and holistic.
