This beautiful lady, Kim Payne Greenwood, was Miss Tennessee and competed with me in the class of 89. We have remained respecting, adoring and loving friends for 32 years. We toured together, where she met and fell in love with her Sweetheart, Lee Greenwood, were Maid of Honors for each other’s weddings and she was there to hold some of my babies when they were born. It is #thankfulthursday, and I would love to share one of the things I am most thankful for in my life. It’s called growth. Spoiler alert🚨:I wasn’t always this confident. I didn’t always portray what you see on this cover photo, it took me a long time, and a long journey to get to where I am today. Please slide through each photo, as this will show you the point where I was at rock bottom all the way up until now, where I’ve grown into the woman I am today. Even though I was smiling in some of these photos as a 12 year old girl, I was depressed. All of you already know what I’ve been through as a 12-year-old girl going through discrimination. These photos were taken around the time of this occurrence. I was shy, lacked self-esteem, and was even self-harming myself shortly after the hair story came out. I was the “awkward girl” in school and considered myself not like the crowd, or following the crowd. I remember my first, “Bring Out the Dolls” event I hosted alongside with @erickadunlap in 2013, I could barely speak infront of the crowd in attendance because I was super shy and HATED public speaking. I always tell my mom, “I really came a long way since then.” She always tells me how proud she is of me, and how I was able to overcome something so traumatic in my life as a girl who was still trying to figure out who she was. I am proud of me too, and I am still growing. We were both Maid of Honors at each other’s weddings and she was there for a few of my children’s births. We have remained close and adored throughout all these years. In 2013, I became the victim of natural hair discrimination in my school. I was told that I would either need to cut or straighten my hair in order for the bullying to stop by my principal. Shortly after, this story went viral on the news practically overnight and I was faced with backlash and an overwhelming amount of support at the same time. As a 12 year old girl at the time, I didn’t have the confidence or self-esteem to understand that my hair was beautiful the way it was. However, from this negative situation, I was able to speak on the talk show @therealdaytime about how I overcame something like this and turning it into a positive by being the spokesperson of @vanessasessence letting every little girl and woman know that they can wear their hair with pride in the school or the workforce and who they are is beautiful. @ebonymagazine created a hashtag #afroday specifically after they were made aware of my story so that I, and girls can feel empowered with their skin and hair. I was also able to be featured in “Natural Hair The Movie” on Amazon. @bringoutthedolls was also started by a wonderful group of women who heard my story and decided to create this annual charity event that collects dolls and donates them to children in shelters every Christmas with me being one of the hostesses. I hosted my very first @bringoutthedolls with @erickadunlap Miss America 2004. Fast forward to last year at Bring Out the Dolls Atlanta, it was proclaimed by the Mayor and City Council of South Fulton County that every year on December 12th would be “Vanessa Van Dyke Bring Out the Dolls Day.” I am now representing the same city as Miss Fulton County USA in the Miss Georgia USA 2021 pageant.
