“British Bombs” by Declan McKenna
youtube
English indie artist and songwriter Declan McKenna has never been afraid to speak his mind. McKenna recently returned with a politically-charged single “British Bombs” - a fiery response to the UK government’s foreign policy in relation to arms trading. The track is a spunky pop song with a punk rock message - speaking to DIY, McKenna states that he thinks his fast-paced and upbeat approach on the track is important as it “helps people engage with music if it’s infectious.”
“British Bombs” is McKenna’s first release since his debut album “What Do You Think About the Car?” (2017) which took aim at police brutality, a growing right-wing presence and secular violence in Britain. While McKenna is seen as “the voice of a generation” regarding his lyrical themes, he insists he’s just being vocal about what his peers are already talking about.
Influenced by British punk - specifically The Clash - the chorus in “British Bombs” picks up the pace as McKenna sings, “Great way to fool me again, hun / Great acting, it’s good what you tell ‘em / Great Britain won’t stand for felons / Great British bombs in Yemen.” Listening to these lyrics, one can’t help but think the release has come at the perfect time: far-right British politician Boris Johnson has just been named the UK’s new Prime Minister. “How could it be about the money? / It’s the vote that matters to me / You say you’re hungry, but you won’t eat the caraway seed.”
“British Bombs” consistently holds a cheery tune until the bridge slows with “And it’s a total fucking whitewash / The people that we might squash / And move from home soil, set sail / For wherever the fuck got oil this time,” reminding us that behind the energetic tune and stirring vocals is an important message - and that Declan McKenna is angry and he wants everyone to know it.
