omg I was literally just thinking of this hdjshfjiwid you have no idea how excited I was to see you say this, Santi!! This could be SUCH an interesting sub plot

I'm just thinking of the aftermath of Roach's almost death where he's picked up by Shadows and specifically being looked after by Graves

I understand Graves is a cocky backstabber, but his relationship with his Shadows genuinely does seem pretty wholesome, I can imagine if he got a new recruit he'd be a very attentive mentor ( I rewatched the scene in MWII where Graves keeps calling out to his downed Shadows and urging Shepherd to send backup for them, like he def cares for his men)

I was also thinking of having Graves be the one to teach Roach ASL because oof think of that extra internal conflict when Roach has to choose between helping the 141 and staying loyal to SC and specifically the man who helped him adapt to military life post-injury ughhhh

Literally, any Roach-centric pairing has me in a chokehold. Angst for days, I love it.

I feel like this could go either two ways:

Graves genuinely does care for Roach's wellbeing (as seen in canon with his actual shadows) and develops a close bond while helping Roach recover from his injuries (could lead to some interesting dynamics between Graves, the 141, and Shepherd)

or, Graves is fully on board with Shepherd's plan to use Roach as leverage against the 141 and only pretends to form a bond with him (just more trauma for Roach lol poor guy)

either way, they'd lead to some good conflict

and if you factor in the whole GhostRoach focus of this AU, I think adding a GravesRoach sub plot would be extra juicy (think of Ghost's reaction when he finds out Roach is alive and all personal with the commander of SC)

i been waiting for this,,

Graves learned how to understand Roach's body language, he knows what every movement, every expression means without him having to say a singular word.

Graves once made the mistake of touching Roach during a flashback, he lashed out hence the small scar i hc graves to have on his cheek.

Roach doesn't talk much, he can't and graves understands that. He doesn't mind silence when he's rambling about his day, because Roach always listens, replies with his face and little noises here and there.

Graves has short moments of disgust, over the fact he worked for a man who caused somebody else so much trouble. He distances himself a lot in fear of hurting Roach himself.

There's been times where he has also lashed out at Roach. Whether it be screaming in his face or a quick backhander to the cheek. Shuts down once he realises Roach is not the enemy.

Neither are big fans of physical touch, but they wont deny it either.

Before the fire, Roach was never one to really nap. He was usually awake, doing god knows what

But now? He's exhausted, he feels tired all the time. When they're in the field, then he'd more awake than anything, but at home he's so so sleepy

He wants nothing more than a quiet day where he can lay on the couch and nap undisturbed.

Sometimes the 141 (or Graves for my GravesRoach enjoyers) find him passed out somewhere odd

GravesRoach headcanons (probably more to come)

•Graves saved Roach from when he was lit on fire by Shepard at the end of the 09 game

•Graves left the military soon after finding Roach and attempted to help him get better

•As shadow company came to existence, Roach was Graves' right hand man

•Roach never formally left SAS, but was assumed MIA

•Roach's call sign remained the same when he worked with the shadows, but he was also 0-2 if the situation called for it

•Graves and Roach's relationship border on friends and lovers. Because they'd give each other kisses and comfort, but not much beyond that. They were merely what each other needed them to be

•Roach and Graves share a room at base. The shadows like to tease them about it. They stopped reading once Graves shouted to leave the subject alone

I have a few HCs! Not any AUs yet!

•Graves lives in a small homey place when he's not with the Shadows, Roach stays there often even when Graves isn't there. Graves' bed is his bed too

•Neither Roach nor Graves enjoy cooking, but they could both contently sit around a grill

•Roach does NOT like staying in guest spaces. Familiar smells, like Graves, are very important to him to feel safe

•Roach likes fire. After being burned, he felt much more fascinated by it

•Even in the summer, Graves will start a fire in the fireplace for Roach. He'll turn the AC on so he could be chill while Roach soaked in the warmth of the fire.

•After missions, Roach will be found cuddled up by the other Shadows on a couch in the break room. Usually asleep

•Roach doesn't mind being carried. Especially if he fell asleep going home (either after a mission or from the store) and waking up in his bed. It reminds him of being a kid

•Graves gets nightmares and will find Roach wherever he is to just be by him for a little while

•Graves HATES being picked up, and coddled unless he specifically asks

Graves craves simple touch.

A gentle hug does more for him in terms of energy more than any coffee. A pat on his shoulder helps him clear his head. A pat on his lower back (or ass) tells him he did a good job on something... The list goes on.

When he finds Roach stranded and half alive, he's a little selfish in how he wants him in his team. The shadows are a fresh thing. Hardly out of the military by that point. Maybe he shouldn't have gone about it how he did, but Roach was a shadow now, whether he liked it or not.

The more Roach healed, the more he could steal light touches. Gently squeezing his hand as an excuse to see how his strength is developing. Holding him by the waist to help him when his balance failed him. Wrapping an arm around his hips to guide him somewhere safely... He's a sucker for any kind of touch.

Especially Roach's.

He can't help it.

As their relationship began to develop, friends to something in-between lovers and friends, Roach had taken notice of the touch Graves would steal. He entertained it for a while before he did the same shit in return. He could see the way the commander's step pattern shifted and how his head was held higher. It made a difference, not that he understood it all that well.

The light touch turned into a very occasional kiss on the cheek, squeezing the other's hand for longer, leaning on each other... Each time Graves just looked like he felt better. And he felt good too.

He didn't need words, the actions were simply enough. And though he and Roach would never label what they were, a soft kiss anywhere said 'i love you'. Love romantically? Love platonically? Everything in between, all of it. Love.

To put it plainly, Roach was exhausted.

As Graves second in command, he has to wrangle up his men if Phil wasn't there... Much to his annoyance, as always. Being changed from a Sargeant to a lieutenant commander was a lot on him.

Even with work, Roach could fall back on Graves whenever he needed. He was lucky for it. Having someone there again, no matter how weird it felt at times.

It wasn't a surprise when the commander's door cracked open and there stood Roach with a blanket around his shoulders. Sleepy eyes no longer covered by his goggles.

"Bug, Hey..." Graves softed. Whatever file he was working on could wait until later. "Come here, baby." He pushed back from his desk and pat his lap lightly.

Roach really didn't have to be told twice. He closed the door behind himself and scurried over to Graves. Big brown eyes making contact with the commander's blue ones. He blinked up at him.

"Uppies?" Graves guessed, figuring that he was right when Roach squeaked at him.

Ever so lovingly, he was picked up and held in Graves lap. His blanket shifted to cover him more.

"That's right, little bug... You come to dada when you need him." Graves cooed, pressing a gentle kiss along a scar that ran across Roach's forehead. Soft and sweet.

Quietly, Roach hummed. He pressed closer to the touch, his eyes easily managing to close as he was held. The uncomfortable position didn't matter much, not when Graves could pick him up and move him easily. The extensive training did a lot for him in that area of expertise.

"I've got you, kid. You can rest... It's been a long day, huh?" Phil asked, knowing he wouldn't get a real response. Slowly, he stood and held Roach. A small couch in the room was their destination. Comfy, unlike his chair.

Roach babbled a little bit of nonsense, but it was followed by a nod.

"Rest.. Dada's got you." Graves promised him, like a soft purr. A warm rumble to his chest as he spoke. Roach wouldn't ever question that.

He simply nodded again and nuzzled Graves' neck.

It took all but 5 minutes for Roach to be asleep in his arms, on his lap.

And Graves couldn't stop himself from peppering kisses all over his sweet little face.

Little Commander

Phillip Graves begins to regress while trying to work. Roach steps in to help, shares some backstory as he calms Phillip down and helps him relax. There are ups and downs, but most importantly, Phillip is happy. (Lots of parts of characters are from "To Save A Life" !! Can be read standalone <3) 5.7k words!!!

seeing the gravesroach agere hc where graves hides it because he doesnt realise has made my brain worms work a little too hard

roach being selectively mute when he's big is a massive thing, everyone knows, they have learned to understand his grunts or his body language.

most kids get very frustrated when people can't understand their little babbles and noises, i imagine he wouldn't

since they already figured out what each noise means, what each garble indicates n such.

IDK IF ANY OF THIS MAKES SENSE THIS IS BRAIN MUSH BEING SPILLED OUT

anyway hes a very talkative little, which is a stark difference to when hes big, he has a lot to say. (even if its a bunch of gibberish)

Graves knows Roach's signals and babbles, it doesn't take long for him to get what the little guy needs. Though it takes a minute sometimes to understand
