Having walked out of the Convention of Estates* on 18th March, 1689, John Graham of Claverhouse, 1st Viscount Dundee, that;'s Bonnie Dundee, Bluidy Clavers depending on which side you were on, rendezvoused with Edinburgh Castle governor, the Duke of Gordon, on this spot, urging him to hold out on behalf of the exiled James VII against the supporters of William.
"To the Lords of Convention, t'was Clavers who spoke,
Ere the King's crown go down, there are crowns to be broke,
So each cavalier who loves honour and me,
Let him follow the bonnet of Bonnie Dundee."
As Gordon followed their progress through a telescope, Dundee halted his troop at the West Kirk [St. Cuthbert's], out of sight of the town, and clambered up the Castle Rock to reach this position where he spoke with Gordon for the last time. Asked where he was heading, he is said to have replied, "Wherever the spirit of Montrose shall direct me." Then, scrambling down to rejoin his men, he rode off to begin his ill-fated campaign.
"Away to the hills, to the caves, to the rocks
Ere I own an usurper, I’ll couch with the fox;
And tremble, false Whigs, in the midst of your glee,
You have not seen the last of my bonnet and me!"
Although the Jacobite army he raised in the Highlands inflicted an unexpected defeat on a government army at Killiecrankie, Dundee was killed by a musket ball while leading a cavalry charge.

You've seen it before. An industrial disaster poisons a town's food or water supply. Residents get angry. Public officials try to dispel that anger through a public act of self-sacrifice, of reassurance. They convene a press conference, whereupon some hapless courtier brings forth a chalice of the supposedly poisoned material. And then, in front of God and the television cameras, the public official imbibes. Examples from recent history abound. In 2019, former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe ate possibly irradiated rice balls from Fukushima to demonstrate the progress made toward rebuilding the prefecture since its 2011 nuclear meltdown. In 2013, former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper claimed he drank fracking fluid to assuage his constituents' concerns around natural gas drilling. (Not "tasty," he said.) And, most famous of all, in 2016 Barack Obama took a sip of (filtered) water from the lead-poisoned water supply of Flint, Michigan, to prove it was safe. ("This is not a stunt," he noted of the stunt.) Officials are already lining up to drink the forbidden poison issuing from East Palestine, Ohio. When a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed there earlier this month, producing an airborne toxic event of hazardous chemicals, concerns about the water inevitably arose. Enter one Troy Nehls, a Republican congressman from Texas, who became the first intrepid soul through the breach. On February 16, Nehls—who was inexplicably in Ohio, some fourteen hundred miles away from his district—posted a video to Twitter to get word out that the water was safe. To prove it, Nehls slurped it up. This was promptly followed by a video from Ohio lieutenant governor Jon Husted, wherein a group of public officials huddled together and threw back shots of supposed tap water like they were freshman college students out on the town. But Nehls and Husted were just the undercard features. On February 21, following reports that Norfolk Southern had funded preliminary tests declaring the water totally safe, Ohio's Republican governor Mike DeWine and a merry caravan, including an EPA official and a congressman, stalked around East Palestine with news cameras, gamely drinking from residents' taps. ("That's good," the EPA official gushed. "That's really cold coming from the tap.") The photos and videos from this danse macabre mirrored Husted's, but on a grander scale—half a dozen people standing around, toasting and clashing cups together like they were at a medieval banquet. If these dizzying trends hold, it's probably a matter of time before Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, or even President Biden, follows suit. Years ago, I surveyed the literature looking for a name or term to describe this phenomenon of consuming potentially tainted materials. After all, it seemed to be increasing in frequency, and I'd even started witnessing it at the level of local politics. But if there was a name, I couldn't find it. So I gave it one: the Devil's Milkshake.
[. . .]
Besides, even if President Obama really did drink lead-poisoned water in Flint, his stunt missed the point: prolonged, chronic exposure is what leads to severe impairment, not a single sip. Race, class, and geography are the major determinants of environmental harm. Most people know this, which is why many Flint residents viewed Obama's theatrics with skepticism.
Yet I would argue that leaders like President Obama are, like the constituents they seek to deceive, fully aware of this structural truth. It's what makes the Devil's Milkshake so strange. The stunt seems to be a tacit acknowledgement by the ruling class that they know the general public doesn't trust them. (Only 19 percent of Americans believe they can trust the government "most of the time.") Its recent proliferation must be seen as proof of a ruling class desperate to uphold the illusion of democracy. It is the last gasp of a dying order, drinking and eating its way to the grave, restrained or unwilling to fix anything, and thus doomed to play act a fantasy before klieg lights and newscasters. The dizzying amount of Devil's Milkshake footage issuing from East Palestine only proves their desperation: these people could not be more unlike you. In fact, the only thing you have left in common with them is the fact that they, too, still have to eat food and drink water to stay alive. That's it. The Devil's Milkshake is a measure of the gaping chasm between you and them.

Republican Governor Kristi Noem engaged in years-long affair with Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski, according to multiple sources
Tumblr media
The affair has been an open secret in political circles.
BREAKING: MAGA Governor Kristi Noem is embroiled in a seedy scandal as it's revealed that she has been having an extramarital affair with top Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski — who is also married and is an alleged sexual predator.
The stunning revelation was first reported in The Daily Mail, which spoke to several source who attested that the sordid clandestine affair has been going on for years, since at least 2019.
Noem, the Governor of South Dakota and a rising star in the increasingly fascist Republican Party, has been floated as a possible running mate for Trump in 2024.
Ironically, Noem loves to claim that she is a strong supporter of "family values." Meanwhile she has been cheating on her husband with the utterly vile Lewandowski — perhaps because she thinks it will help her career.
On top of that, Noem is an avid supporter of "traditional marriage," which is really just a euphemism for bigotry against homosexual couples. She has said that it's a "a special, God-given union between one man and one woman." The hypocrisy is enough to make you sick.
Lewandowski has been aggressively lobbying to get Noem selected as Trump's vice presidential candidate. Now, we know why...
"He may not be very smart, but it takes big balls to lobby to have your mistress named one of the most powerful people in the country," said one Republican operative.
"Every time someone said something about how Kristi would be a savior to the conservative movement, someone else would say, 'Right, the savior that's f*cking Corey Lewandowski,'" revealed one Trump administration employee.
The Daily Mail was able to uncover mountains of evidence of the affair. There have been dozens of trips that "mixed business and pleasure," flights on donor planes, and luxury resort visits where others witnessed them being intimate.
On one occasion, the two were so affectionate that Noem was mistaken for Lewandowski's wife.
Lewandowski, a consummate creep, is married to a 9/11 widow and has four children. He has had other affairs in the past, including allegedly with campaign press secretary Hope Hicks.
As usual, the party of family values is anything but.

In Finnish, the term "kiekko" means puck or disc, and it's quite well-known that people in Finland go a bit wild over the sport played with a puck.
However, another kiekko sport has taken Finland by storm in the past few decades, but it isn't played with a puck, sticks or even on ice. It's played with a disc.
Disc golf, also known as Frisbee golf, is a big deal in Finland.
Featuring more than 800 of the courses across the country, Finland has the second-largest per-capita number of disc golf courses in the world, surpassed only by Iceland, according to a survey by disc golf statistics tracker Udisc (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
So it should come as no surprise that the Disc Golf European Open in Nokia, Finland has become one of the premiere professional disc golf tournaments in the world and the largest of its kind in Europe.
Switching out clubs for discs
The sport is similar to traditional golf, just with a few adjustments. Forgoing clubs, balls and holes, players try to get discs into baskets with hanging chains in as few attempts as possible. The same terminology is used as well—"birdie", "eagle" and "fore" are all borrowed from the original version of the sport.
Depending on the type of shot, players also switch out discs, often named by their counterparts from traditional golf clubs—"driver" and "putter". And while not as bulky as traditional golf bags, some players even have caddies of their own to help them carry their arsenals of discs.
Although they might seem similar, the style differs greatly from traditional golf—the Disc Golf European Open's sponsors included barefoot shoes, a popular Nordic tabletop game and, of course, numerous disc manufacturers.
At this point though, Finland now has more disc golf courses than traditional golf courses. There are a few reasons behind the sport's meteoric rise in Finland. Compared to other sports it is relatively inexpensive—for both equipment and use of the courses.
The sport caters to players of different skill levels, is family-friendly, and a way for people to get outside. Additionally, unlike traditional golf courses, disc golf can be played in forests, rather than carefully manicured fairways and greens—suiting Finland's natural terrain quite well.
Helsinki's roaming forest reindeer released back into the wild
Finnish minister not concerned about Italian governor's request to delay Nato ratification
Thousands in attendance
Originally hosted in Tampere in 2006, the event started being held at the Nokia disc golf course—also known as "the Beast"—in 2011. The 18-hole course is challenging, littered with obstacles and offers elite players a chance to truly test their skills.
The logo for Europe's preeminent disc golf tournament is a lion in mid-roar—a nod to Finland's coat of arms and ice hockey team and to remind competitors that this is no walk in the park. This year, the prize purse has grown to 100,000 euros, with a first place payout of 12,000 euros.
If someone could be found responsible for the rise of the sport in Finland, it might be Jussi Meresmaa, the Disc Golf European Open's brainchild.
He's a former professional disc golf player as well as the owner and founder of Discmania, a firm that's one of the event's primary sponsors.
Meresmaa said he was optimistic about the turnout for the event.
"Yesterday we had more than a thousand people, and today we expect more than two thousand, with more coming for the finals this weekend," he told Yle News on Friday.
The event takes place over the course of days with the competition starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. People of all ages, especially families and kids, come to see some of the sport's top talents.
Disc golf's biggest names
Paige Pierce, an American professional disc golfer from Texas, has won the women's event twice— first in 2013 and again in 2019. She said few countries are better hosts for the sport than Finland.
Pierce said that during the player's meeting Meresmaa told the tournament participants that disc golf is extremely popular in Finland. Meresmaa confirmed that according to a VTT survey, disc golf was the number one hobby for 28 percent of Finnish school children.
As fans approached her to autograph her line of branded discs, Pierce said it was good to be back in Finland.
"It's great to be in the community of people that love disc golf so much," Pierce added in between scribbling out signatures for her admirers.
Another American player, Kat Mertsch from the US state of Arkansas, told Yle that this was her first time visiting Finland, but she already loved the country's enthusiasm for disc golf.
"It's not like this back in the States, it's more seen as a sport here. Americans are like, 'Frisbee, we're gonna go throw the frisbee around the park!'" she said gleefully.
"While here [in Finland] it's like, 'We are going to compete in disc golf,'" she said, in a more stoic voice.
Mertsch added that Finland's appreciation of disc golf is what the sport needs.
"They are really into it. It's good to see. It's good for the growth of the sport," Mertsch enthused.
Playing on home turf was Finland's Heidi Laine, who liked having the Disc Golf European Open return this year.
"It's great to play in front of family and friends and this is a really great event," Laine said.
While Pierce was ranked in second on Friday and Mertsch tied for third, Finland's very own Eveliina Salonen led the women's division with a total of four under par.
On Sunday, Pierce took the lead to win the open for her third time, coming in with a score of 12 over par, edging out Salonen's 15.
The men's competition also had its fair share of the sport's biggest names. American Paul McBeth, the five-time champion of the event, battled it out against his toughest competitor yet in the appropriately named Eagle McMahon, also an American. By the end of Friday, McMahon was leading with a total of 24 under par against McBeth's -23.
By the end of Saturday, both were tied with -32 as they looked to settle the score on Sunday.
Making his debut appearance in the open and his first visit to Finland was American Brodie Smith, one of the sport's most well-known players.
Smith started his career playing ultimate, a team sport that is also played with a disc, albeit a different style. His trick shot videos (siirryt toiseen palveluun) have garnered millions of views on YouTube. After a professional ultimate career plagued by injuries and a brief stint on the American TV reality series The Amazing Race, Smith decided to make the switch to disc golf in 2020 and try his luck at the professional circuit.
While admitting that he has to put in a lot of work on his game, Smith said it was great to play in Finland.
"The weather's great, it's awesome playing a tournament where the fairways are lined with fans, and it's an awesome course too," Smith told Yle News.
Smith, and many other players, were not surprised by Finland's enthusiasm for disc golf, as at this point the Nordic country's interest in the sport is well known.
"I looked at past tournaments out here, so I kind of had an idea there would be a lot of people" Smith explained, adding that at most tournaments only top groups have followings, but in Nokia there are spectators throughout the course.
Smith clarified that it wasn't just the number of fans, but how young they were.
"I think that's the craziest thing out here is just the amount of kids that come out. A lot of the pro tour events back home [in the US] it's mostly people over the age of 20, so seeing all the kids out here it just shows you that the sport is growing and it's probably going to get bigger and bigger out here," Smith noted.
Fans from near and far
The open tournament also attracts fans from around the world and thousands of enthusiasts came to Friday's event.
Sven, from Germany, said that he and his girlfriend arrived by camper van to take in the action.
"No," he laughed, "disc golf is nowhere near as big in Germany as it is in Finland."
This sentiment was shared by most spectators, revelling in how Nokia had turned into the centre of the disc golf world for a few days.
Per Stalås came from Stockholm to see the action. A disc golf aficionado and player, he also owns a store that sells disc golf gear in Sweden.
"Just the opportunity to see these people play live, it's a big step up from YouTube," he joked from the VIP section near the eighteenth and final hole of the course.
Duncan Ross came all the way to Nokia from northern British Columbia, Canada. He stopped in Nokia during a trip around Europe, but said this was the most important event on his itinerary.
"Sure seeing Europe is great, but this is truly something special. It's some of the best disc golf in the world and the atmosphere here is amazing," a smiling Ross told Yle News.
But not everyone had to travel from afar to watch the spectacle. A local Nokia resident, Seija, came out to view the event from her apartment which overlooks "the Beast". She said it was good to see the Tampere suburb host the event.
"It brings people from all over the world and it's interesting to watch. Before the event came to Nokia, I'd never heard of the sport, but now I always look forward," Seija said.

“I am here today to ask the world to witness the situation in Okinawa,” Tamaki told a session of the world body’s Human Rights Council, arguing that the concentration of the military bases there threatens peace.
Tamaki, the first Okinawa governor in eight years to address the council, said, “The reclamation work proceeds despite the fact that it was clearly opposed by Okinawan voters in a democratically held referendum."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Silicon Valley, the mass media and the British government seem to be doing everything they can to delegitimize the very serious allegations against Russell Brand by making it abundantly clear to everyone that what they actually care about is his online content, not his accusers. The Google-owned platform YouTube has demonetized Brand’s account, empire propagandists like James Ball of “The only barrier to Julian Assange leaving Ecuador’s embassy is pride” fame are writing screeds attacking Brand’s content, and a British MP with ties to the British army’s psychological warfare division has been writing letters to other social media platforms demanding that Brand be demonetized.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It should be more widely understood that denying the “Uyghur genocide” propaganda narrative is not the same as denying that there was an authoritarian crackdown in Xinjiang. Empire apologists tend to conflate these two points in a motte-and-bailey fallacy wherein the much harder claim to defend (Uyghur genocide) is misrepresented as one and the same as a much easier claim to defend (authoritarian actions in Xinjiang).
That Beijing began implementing a giant police action in Xinjiang in 2014 involving large-scale detention of certain Uyghurs in reeducation camps is not seriously debated, and is not denied by Beijing. What’s denied is that any of this was done with the intention — or the effect of — eliminating or diminishing the Uyghur people or their culture. There is simply no basis for that claim, and mountains of evidence to the contrary.
These reeducation camps have been spun by western propagandists as concentration camps and extermination camps in a ham-fisted effort to frame Xi Jinping as another Adolf Hitler, when in reality they really were re-education camps in the literal sense of the term. They were facilities designed to indoctrinate/de-indoctrinate Uyghurs believed to have become radicalized into an ideology that had plunged Xinjiang into violence and chaos and threatened to tear apart the PRC. By all accounts — including by the western press — these facilities were decommissioned around 2019–2020.
This was all covered in a recent report by two prominent German sinologists which didn’t get enough attention. Were there abuses in Xinjiang? It’s hard to imagine how there wouldn’t have been in a sweeping police action involving large-scale involuntary detainment. You can criticize Beijing for those abuses all you want, but what you can’t do is legitimately call it anything like genocide.
When Uyghur separatist groups began inflicting acts of terror with the goal of driving the Chinese government out of Xinjiang and creating their own state, Beijing had essentially three choices:
To engage in a US-style campaign of mass military slaughter against these groups until they were defeated,
To allow a violent uprising of what would inevitably become western-backed jihadists as they had just seen happen in Libya and Syria carve away a massive and geostrategically crucial part of China to be exploited by the US and its allies, or
To find some alternative to 1 and 2.
Beijing went with option number three, and the alternative it found was the aggressive deradicalization campaign it ended up implementing and the re-education facilities it has been so widely criticized for.

#JamesDonaldson On #MentalHealth - ‘Why Did This Happen?’: Three Questions We Always Ask About #Suicide
Tumblr media
Lipi Roy, MD, MPH Contributor #ReginaKing, left, and son Ian Alexander, Jr., attend the Governors Ball for the 67th Primetime Emmy . Betty White, Sidney Poitier, Bob Saget, Louie Anderson, Andre Leon Talley, Clark Gillies. From legendary actors and comedians to fashion icons and NHL Hall of Famers, the first few weeks of 2022 have been full of heartbreaking loss. I think I was hit hardest, however, by the death of Regina King’s son, Ian Alexander, Jr. The Oscar-winner had always spoken so adoringly about her only #child. He was only 26 years old. And he died by what is still considered a shameful and grossly misunderstood method: #suicide. The 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and 2nd among people aged 10 to 34 (a person dies every 11 minutes), #suicide was identified by the #NationalInstituteofMentalHealth as a major public health concern. #Suicide rates increased 35% from 1999 to 2018, briefly declining in 2019. However, reports of #depression and #anxiety – risk factors for #suicide – have increased during the #pandemic. In 2018, the death rate from #suicide for #Black #men was four times greater than for #Black #women. Over the course of my career, I have lost several #patients to #suicide. Most recently, on Christmas Day, 2021: I was at home celebrating the holiday with my family when a senior #nurse practitioner texted me. “Sam” was a father of three, depressed, lonely and in and out of jail, but he was working hard to get his life together. The skilled and empathic #nurse who found him was grief-stricken and guilt-ridden: “I just saw him yesterday. Why didn’t I see the signs?” She’s neither the first nor the last person to make this query. #Suicide is a troubling phenomenon that has always been riddled with questions. With the help of a few #mentalhealthprofessionals and a close friend of Ms. King, I tackle three of the most common questions related to #suicide. #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.  #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleOrder your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife:From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy http://www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com 1.     “Why did they do it?” This is perhaps the most frustrating, confusing and heartbreaking inquiry of all. “We can never fully understand the intense sense of despair, emotional pain, aloneness or desperation that leads a person to die by #suicide,” describes Pierre Arty, MD, Chief Psychiatric Officer at Housing Works. Not all people have a longstanding history of #depression prior to the fatal act. Dr. Arty adds that at times, #suicide is planned, but at other times – Hitler, as an example – “it is an instant decision that could not have been clearly predicted by either loved ones or clinicians.” #SUICIDEPREVENTION in a Chicago subway station. 2.     “Why didn’t I see the signs?” Like the #nurse on my team as well as myself and countless others, we second-guess our actions, or lack thereof. Family, friends, coworkers and clinicians are often saddled with #guilt, remorse and/or shame for not preventing the individual’s death. According to Candida Fink, MD, a #psychiatrist in Westchester, NY, “We sense that #suicide is somehow more preventable than other deaths it.” While #suicideprevention is a public health goal, like heart disease prevention, Dr. Fink adds, “It is no more specifically preventable than deaths caused by other illnesses.” Complex factors are often involved, including severe #mentalillness unresponsive to treatment.  3.     “Why do wealthy people kill themselves?” Don’t they have it all?, we often ask. In 2018, I wrote about five common misconceptions about suicide after fashion mogul, #KateSpade, and culinary star, #AnthonyBourdain, had both taken their lives in the same week. The reality we often forget, however, is that celebrities are human beings, just like us. “We only see one version – one of glamour, fame and fortune,” explains Nance Roy, Ed.D, Chief Clinical Officer at The Jed Foundation. They may struggle with relationships, finances and illness. Adds Dr. Roy: “Celebrities may feel more pressure to perform, to be perfect and to keep up their image for fans, often making it more difficult for them to reach out for help.” Another critical point: a person rarely takes his or her own life because of just one reason. “#Suicide is complex and we often don't know all the factors involved.” #ReginaKing her son, Ian, in 2003. ASSOCIATED PRESS #ReginaKing – Talented Star, Devoted Mother As a long-time fan of Ms. King’s work on television and film, I’ve been in awe of her range from comedy (The Big Bang Theory) to her Academy Award-winning role as a devoted but anguished mother (If Beale Street Could Talk). Through the lens of her inner circle, however, we might gain a deeper sense of this extraordinary #woman. “She was adored by so many,” reflected Roland Martin, journalist, CEO and close friend of the actress and director. “Regina was in the groove of her own career when she lost her only #child,” Martin commiserated. The host of #RolandMartinUnfiltered also pointed out the larger cultural and #racial context of Mr. Alexander’s death: “In the #AfricanAmerican community, we don’t discuss issues like #mentalillness including #depression. We need to talk about it in churches, at home, everywhere,” adding that inequities in health care access for #AfricanAmericans must be addressed. #Racial Disparities in #Suicide #Suicide rates, as noted by Martin, vary by race and ethnicity. According to the #CDC, the highest rates of #suicide are among #NativeAmerican / Alaska Native and non-#Hispanic White populations. Among #Black #youth, #suicide has been devastating: a 2018 study revealed that #Black #children aged five to 12 were twice as likely to die by #suicide compared to their white counterparts. These distressing numbers reflect a larger problem of health inequities faced by #BlackAmericans, particularly related to #mentalhealth. According to the HHS Office of Minority Health, #Black #adults in the U.S. are more likely to report symptoms of emotional distress (e.g. sadness, #hopelessness) than white #adults. Despite the need, the #AmericanPsychiatricAssociation reports that only one in three #BlackAmericans who need #mentalhealth care receives it. They are also less likely to receive evidence-based medications or psychotherapy compared to the general population. #BlackAmericans continue to face inequities in access to health care, particularly #mentalhealth ...  GETTY How Do We Overcome Barriers To Addressing #Suicide? We need to reduce the #stigma faced by people experiencing a #mentalillness. How? As Martin mentioned, we need to talk about it. #Stigma remains a major barrier to treatment and care. Dr. Fink agrees: “How do we grieve and process except by speaking and sharing with others?” When people die of cancer, their illness is almost always part the public conversation. From his Haitian roots, Dr. Arty provides a global perspective: “As a world community, we need to be bold and unashamed in discussing this sensitive and painful topic. The discussion itself may save a life.” Dispelling myths is also key. A common myth? “Asking someone if they are suicidal will not increase the risk that they will die by #suicide,” clarifies Dr. Roy. Inquiring about potential self-harm in a compassionate way may instead provide an opportunity for the person to express their feelings and reach out for help. We must also actively fight discrimination faced by #Black #men and #women within the health care system. Clinician bias – conscious and unconscious – and lack of cultural competency can lead to misdiagnoses and suboptimal treatment. The #NationalAllianceonMentalIllness reminds us to be mindful of the central role played by faith-based institutions as a source of mental and emotional support. Governors Ball 2019: 10 Ones to Catch (Who Aren’t Tyler, the Creator or The 1975)
Tumblr media
We are only days away from New York’s premier music festival. We are of course talking about The Governors Ball, which is set to take over Randall’s Island Park in New York from Friday, May 31 to Monday, June 3. Featuring multiple stages hosting some of the best names in music, from The Strokes, Tyler, the Creator, to The 1975, there is no shortage of must-catch acts at this year’s festival.
So, while we are all obviously going to be shouting out every lyric to IGOR before cry-dancing to A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, the question is who are the hidden gems yet to be discovered on 2019’s Governors Ball lineup? Well, we have your list of future stars right here, as well as a helpful playlist to familiarize yourself with each and every one of them.
Easy Life
youtube
“I’m trying to lock doors with these musical keys,” is a standout line on Easy Life’s “Pockets” and in many ways defines the band’s musical manifesto. The project of five of the finest lads from Leicester, England, Easy Life exists in an era where genres have given way to innovation and fluidity. Jumping between the vintage vibes of J Dilla, the lackadaisical indie rock of Rex Orange County, and the top-of-the-head storytelling of Arctic Monkeys, Easy Life’s blend of a myriad of genres, influences, and sounds are nothing short of intoxicating.
NJOMZA
youtube
The fact that the name NJOMZA translates to “fresh” in Albanian makes perfect sense given a single passing glance at this R&B star on the rise. With a series of ever-changing neon hair, a Kill Bill aesthetic, and an otherworldly blend of R&B and soul, NJOMZA is not just another artist coasting in on a renewed interested in the timeless genre; she is positioning herself to constantly be a step ahead. Her futuristic and constantly evolving sound comes through in spades, whether it be in her own solo work or electrifying collaborations with Party Favor and FKi 1st.
Elohim
youtube
Elohim is the very definition of a commanding one-woman show. The electronic singer, songwriter, producer, and musician entered the music scene a few short years ago, and, in that timespan, has grown to be one of its greatest innovators. Nowhere is this notion more realized than with the recent release of her lauded EP Braindead. Released in support of Mental Health Awareness month, with 100% of the May proceeds going to charities focusing on providing outreach and supporting for those living with mental health issues, Braindead further cemented Elohim as an artist to watch and most certainly catch.
Cautious Clay
youtube
“Ever since I started playing music, it was always about the feel,” shares New York–based artist Cautious Clay. It is this intangible, perfectly indescribable feel that begins to explain the wonder of Cautious Clay’s music. Blending experimental indie with R&B and hip-hop, the New York artist crafts utterly mesmerizing works that are often rooted in deeply personal introspection. The end result plays out like an artist vulnerable enough to wear both his heart on his sleeve and let his mind unfurl like loosely-tied-together poetry.
Chelsea Cutler
youtube
Like the best of modern-day artists, Chelsea Cutler got her start with a series of self-produced work on SoundCloud before realizing she had a hit on her hands with “Your Shirt.” The single, which has been streamed over 65 million times on Spotify alone, is only one of many impeccably heartfelt electronic pop gems the artist currently holds in her repertoire. Then there is the fact that Cutler recently dropped a joint EP with Jeremey Zucker earlier this year, the same Zucker who is also on this year’s Governors Ball lineup. Special guest surprise anyone?
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
youtube
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever finds themselves in the unique position of both having the longest name of any artist playing Governors Ball this year and being one of this year’s best-kept-secrets. Self-described as a “tough pop/soft punk” outfit, the Australian band delivers dynamic rock and roll that is underscored by a penchant for dry wit and sprawling lyrical tangents. It is the sort of music perfectly fit for losing yourself in, whether that be in an island off New York or in the band’s fondness for expansive instrumentation that calls to mind the heyday of the art punk movement.
Ric Wilson
youtube
If you were to ask Ric Wilson to describe his music, chances are you would find yourself on the receiving end of a list of genres that are as expansive as the music the Chicago artist creates. Nouveau disco rap, electrified motivational funk hip-hop poet, gospel rapper, and more may begin to explain the colorful world of Wilson, but it feels like we are still only scratching the surface of one of Chicago’s future stars. So why should you go see Wilson? Well, if the above did not make it apparent enough, no one else is quite making music like he is.
Injury Reserve
youtube
Injury Reserve is an alternative rap trio whose music traces a line from the golden era of hip-hop, á la A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep, to the daily and political struggles of modern day living. Championed as the next wave of underground rap, the Arizona-based trio will be hitting Governors Ball hot off the heels of their acclaimed self-titled album, which features everything from Elon Musk references to features from Freddie Gibbs, Rico Nasty, DRAM, and Aminé. Plus, as anyone who has been to an Injury Reserve show can attest, there is no shortage of energy to be found in that mosh pit.
Calpurnia
youtube
In many ways, Calpurnia reads as act one of a yet-to-be-conceived nostalgia-laden indie film. The project of four teenagers and close friends who all found a shared bond in the classic music of the Beatles, Nirvana, and David Bowie, it felt like destiny that they would come together in the hopes of creating a generation-defining rock band. And with the release of their debut EP, Scout, Calpurnia proved they were well on their way to do so. A phenomenal collection of emotionally-driven garage rock with lyrics that touched upon subject matter well beyond their years, Calpurnia is undoubtedly here to stay.
Tobi Lou
youtube
There is a pervasive effervescence to the music of Tobi Lou. Hailing from Chicago by way of Nigeria, the rising rapper crafts music that is as lively as the animated cover art and visuals that often accompany his idyllic sonics. Yet, this is no mere child’s play. Behind the buoyancy of Tobi Lou’s work is an undeniable gift for spirited hip-hop that is equal parts infectious and brimming with lyrical depth. If you do not want to be kicking yourself come Monday, do not miss out on catching Tobi Lou at Governor’s Ball.
