"STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON"

As a youth of todays generation we'll always look for something that will fulfill our boredom and give us entertainment, it's either through sports, board/video games, arts and more. But on my case, I've spend all my free time watching my all time favorite—kdramas.

My love for kdramas starts as this kdrama entitled STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON was introduced to me by my friend way back at fifth grade. The moment they've let me have a glimpse of this one, it immediately caught my attention because the plot of the story excites me and make me think that it is worthy to be watched. The kdrama Strong Woman do Bong Soon was a 2017 drama series and a romantic comedy,action,fantasy, crime and thriller genre. It is a story of a girl who has super strength that came from her ancestors and only a girl from the family line can receive that power. Bong Soon has a twin brother named Do Bong Ki (An woo Yeon) and since he is a he that means that he did not inherit the unusual family strength. Do Bong Ki has a stable job as a doctor, but Bong Soon has trouble finding gainful employment as an aspiring game developer. Throughout her journey of finding a job, she met someone who is a CEO of a gaming company—An Min-Hyuk. First, Bong Soon applied as his personal guard, and he was amazed about Bong Soon's super strength. It takes them a long time before they've realized that they like each other since Bong Soon have a longtime crush on her friend since they're still studying— In Gook Doo. But as soon as Bong Soon and Min-Hyuk get along together, they've created a very intimate relationship with each but the I'm sure,if you're a love story enjoyer for sure you'd ask if did they end up being together?well,that's the another reason why you have to watch this kdrama series and be surprised about the happenings at every scenes. The climax of the story is when Bong Soon have loss her power because of the criminal who kidnapped her best friend Gyeung-shim. But sooner, Bong Soon got her power back and you wanna know why? Well that's also the very exciting part which I recommend you to watch this kdrama and enjoy all the exciting scenes because I don't wanna spoil you alot. There's still a ton of wonderful scenes that you have to watch especially the plot of Bong Soon and Min-Hyuk's cute scenes and the love quarrel between the 3 characters—Min-hyuk,Bong Soon, and Gook doo.

This Kdrama series will surely fulfill your boredom and will give you a roller coaster of emotions while you're watching, so go ahead, sit back,relax and watch STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON.

Justin Chon shooting Gook in black and white as an homage to La Haine is pretty based. Tonally it's similar to the former as the lead characters are POC trying to get by in troubling times as their day descends into chaos. At times, it felt similar to Clerks with the humor and vibe of running a store.

Gook (2017)

A heartfelt film exploring families and relationships between Korean and African American communities set during the LA Riots

Gook is a film that was made with a clear goal in mind, however it took a while for it to come through when presented on screen.

It is extremely weak in the first half. It was very difficult to understand the importance of some sequences. And it wasn’t immediately clear as to why this was set during the LA riots. A lot of this is improved on in the second half. Emotional beats hit a lot harder, with more nuanced actions telling the story instead of the poorly written dialogue. The reasoning behind the backdrop of the LA riots became a lot clearer. Films set during a historical and larger struggle with a plot surrounding a more contained personal struggle can paint a very strong picture and this does succeed.

Going back to the dialogue, it really is awful most of the time. Every character swears so much but for no real reason other than for them to feel ‘ghetto’ I guess. The written dialogue, along with the subpar performances make this film so unbelievable for the most part. I will give credit, however, to the antagonist, Kevin, since you do have this hatred for him throughout the movie. A lot of characters feel a little more understandable in the second half and make more sense. 

The conflict and tension between the main two brothers is incredibly forced, the earlier scenes of conflict are so random and feel unorganic. Many sequences in this film are just random, namely the dance scene at the store. There was no clear rhyme or reason for most of it.

Visually, the film is okay. Some shots are well composed and convey a message without the use of words (especially the opening and final shots). But some shots looked unbalanced in the weight of the frame. Some cuts throughout are very disorienting and often breaks the 180 degree rule. The choice to have the film in Black and White makes it look decently better.

While I really enjoyed the second half, the awful attempts at drama and comedy in the former half are so draining to get past. So I can’t forgive that. There needed to be more time and effort in the writing of the first half. While we didn’t love it, Justin Chon did to a fairly good job here and I’m interested in what comes next if he puts more work into it. 

*Amazon prime had no subtitles, I was lost in the Korean speaking parts. Fuck you amazon/ distributers.

About a black girl in LA who hangs out with two Korean shoe shop owners when their families are against each other.

This is actually LA. Also, why is America always gotta be so fucking racist?

This was really well done for their own movie. I also think it is very distinctly Justin Chon and David So. I’m really glad they bring in representation for the poor, immigrant family dynamics, race relations, black and white for the film, abuse in families and on the streets, and the artistic additions of fire, dance, and the car spinning. They did so well, I’m pretty impressed.

Being hardworking while poor is such a painful thing to deal with in so many different ways. esp. if family is involved.
