What's your opinion on Hotel Transylvania?

I have nostalgia for it even though I hate excrement and fart humor. It’s ok, and also I loved how expressive it was when a lot of animation at that early period of cgi was kind of stiff. It’s in the same camp as Gnomeo and Juliet for me. And I love the concept art, but it’s a given that a lot of concept art for animated movies is more interesting that the final product

Ur not gonna believe the new info i found about Turns out after doing some searching i found concept art and story boards for the OG story of sherlock gnomes, and it was original gonna take place in Stratford and the story was gnomes were going missing just like in the final film, but here its believed to be a human and juliet is taken as well, so gnomeo teams up with sherlock and the villain is revealed to be watson who was jealous of the gnomes since he is an elf, oh!! and featherson and his wife were going to be in the story

Ok why does this sound like a much better plot than what we got

Not just bc we could’ve gotten Featherstone and HIS WIFE but also Watson being an elf instead of a gnome sounds very intriguing! And him actually being the villain instead of a pawn in the villain’s plan is way better and less confusing than what happened. And we could’ve actually explored Gnomeo and Juliet’s separation anxiety and how they don’t handle being apart very well. But ofc Juliet getting kidnapped isn’t very Girlboss™️ /sarcasm

Lord Bluebury & Lady Redbrick

I finally got around to drawing Gnomeo and Juliet’s late parents. I actually drew this a while back but I didn’t want to post it until I finished the recent episode/chapter of “A New Generation”. To sum it up, it’s a flashback episode that reveals how the beginning of the feud led Lord Bluebury and Lady Redbrick to their tragic demise.

I honestly had a lot of ideas for their designs and I used some of Gnomeo and Juliet’s concept art as inspiration. I imagine everyone sees Lord Bluebury as a proud leader of his garden who shares many tales of his adventure-filled youth, when in reality he’s just this tired old man who overestimates how much he can actually do. He holds a staff like Lord Redbrick but he mostly uses it like a cane. I gave him a piece of a wisteria in his shirt pocket to reference the tree that was considered his “pride and joy”. As for Lady Redbrick she’s aging quite a bit herself, with hints of grey in her hair and wrinkles on her face. Regardless she’s still got a spring in her step and isn’t afraid to take on any challenges thrown at her. I added a little rose to her hair and some rose petals to her skirt, to somewhat signify her closeness to Juliet.

Anyway I loved getting to draw these two, and I’m sad that I had to kill them off in this episode. But they were still fun characters to experiment with, both personality and appearances.

Niles Bluebury-Redbrick

Niles, the second-born child of Gnomeo and Juliet, is an introverted, curious boy who longs for an adventure but is afraid to pursue it. He’s quiet for the most part and can be a bit of a know-it-all, but once getting to know him, he’s loyal and trustworthy friend.

Next up we have Niles, the middle triplet. For some reason when I first came up with the idea of Gnomeo and Juliet’s son, I knew exactly what I wanted him to look like, and all I had to do was put it onto paper. His design is more simplistic than his sisters’ since he isn’t meant to stand out that much (he still kinda does, being a purple gnome in a garden of Reds and Blues). I used more bland colors on the clothes that aren’t purple so he’s able to sorta blend in with his surroundings. His appearance is meant to resemble Gnomeo, only scrawnier and with brown eyes and hair. I actually even used some of Gnomeo’s concept art as inspiration for his design. His representation of Juliet is the red flower on his vest, specifically over his heart.

The next kiddo is Lucia, who I’m really excited to talk about. Remember to feel free to ask questions about Niles and/or my OCs in general!

gnomeo and juliet would have been so good as a 2d animated film using some of the designs from the concept art though?? especially these specific ones (all by gary dunn)

the designs are way more detailed and also give off the intended personality of the character a lot better than their more modern + simplistic designs (which were better in the end since this was a 3d children's film) and they'd actually work really well in a legitimate romeo and juliet adaptation. where they're gnomes.

the only design here that looks close to the final version is bennie, and that's b/c the idea for her was always short with a big hat and the concept art i could find was when it was later in production (which why it's colored so well).

but mostly paris, nanette, tybalt, lady bluebury, and lord rebrick??? their concepts here aren't only super fucking cool but like i mentioned before they also give a huge shove into the over-all personalities and i hate the fact that i'm going in about the gnomeo and juliet concept art but it's so fucking GOOD.

also side note a lot of gnomeo concept art gave him a little patch (usually in a heart shape) and i thought tht was a super cool idea albeit pretty corny but this is a gnome version of romeo and juliet so it can't get much cornier than it already is.
