20th May 1845, British Royal Navy officer and explorer Sir John Franklin commanding HMS Erebus and HMS Terror with 134 men aboard, sail from the River Thames in England to navigate and complete the Northwest Passage. The ships are last seen by Europeans three months later in Baffin Bay, whereupon all trace of the men and the ships disappear. From 1853 searches collected artefacts and testimony from local Inuit, to discover what happened to the men and ships. By 1866 it was known that both ships became ice bound and were abandoned. In the 1980’s, remains were discovered on King William's Island, confirming that the crew died from hypothermia, scurvy, starvation, cannibalism, botulism and lead poisoning from the poorly sealed food tins, or the ship's distilled water system. Inuit reports told later searches that the captain of HMS Terror Francis Crozier, and one other member of the expedition were seen between 1852 and 1858. In 2014 the wreck of HMS Erebus was located, alongside HMS Terror in 2016. 7th May 1840, death of German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, known for his paintings of the emotional contemplation of nature, alongside gothic ruins, and graveyards, barren trees, and silhouetted figures. Friedrich suffered depressive episodes throughout his life which fueled the symbology of his paintings. Towards the last twenty years of his life, as romanticism’s grip on the cultural imagination began to wane, he lived as a recluse, derided as being eccentric and melancholic; the"most solitary of the solitary". Spending days wandering alone in woods and fields during the days and the night. In June 1835, he suffered his first stroke, and gradually declined until his death on this day.
