#OnThisDate: Last year (5/25/2021), I spent my day in the City of Troy,NY. I viewed some cool dining pieces in a window display setup for the HBO series, “The Guilded Age”, and I stopped at River Street Market with a friend to get dinner and made note of the “It’s good to be stubborn” soda box on a restaurant counter. Today (Wednesday, May 25,2022), Dad & I ran errands to Schaghticoke to purchase things for the driveway and watched elementary school children from Hoosick Valley SD get their Memorial Day ice cream at Stewart’s while giving us their holiday greetings. I got my iced coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts ($1.00 off purchase benefited Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital (Albany Medical Center) before heading home to take part in my Zoom piano lesson. Last April, I was lucky enough to catch the filming of @gildedagehbo in Central Park and tonight the series finally debuts on @hbo at 9pm. The lavish period drama from Julian Fellowes, the writer of my favorite film Gosford Park, highlights the tussle between the old money elite in New York and the new money Industrialists who shake up their world. I joked with a European recently that the Gilded Age was the best thing to happen to American architecture until income tax came along and ruined all the fun. Meryl Streep Crashed Her Daughter's Gilded Age Party In The Most Charming Way

Meryl's daughter Louisa Jacobson stars in the new period drama from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.

By Emma Dibdin Jan 27, 2022 Just when you thought you couldn't love Meryl Streep any more, a video leaks of her crashing a party in the most charming way. Cynthia Nixon, who's in the cast of HBO's new period drama The Gilded Age, threw a party to celebrate the premiere this week, and shared some delightful footage of Meryl via Instagram.

Louisa Jacobson, Meryl's youngest daughter, stars in the series, and appears in the video alongside Nixon. As the pair raise glasses of champagne, a beaming Meryl sneaks past the camera, looking every inch the proud parent.

"Hi Meryl! Last night’s little @GildedAgeHBO hang with @Louisa_Jacobson, @DeneeBenton and @BenAhlers (and crashed by Louisa’s mom)," Nixon wrote in her caption to the post, which is unfortunately no longer available to watch.

The Gilded Age is the newest project from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. Set in the late 19th century, the show stars Jacobson as Marian Brook, a young woman who relocates from rural Pennsylvania to New York City to live with her wealthy aunts (Nixon and Christine Baranski), after the death of her father. She's accompanied by a young aspiring writer (Denée Benton) who's also seeking a fresh start.

As Marian is seduced by the promise of the city, she's also caught up in her aunts' battle with a railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife. Per the official synopsis, "exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?"

The show's been in the works for almost a decade - Fellowes started working on the first iteration of it way back in 2012, and was at the time developing it for NBC. It ended up on the back burner for several years, and was finally greenlit in 2018 before ultimately moving to HBO.

The Gilded Age premiered this past Monday, January 24, on HBO and HBO Max.

S1E5- Charity Has Two Functions

I can't be the only one that watches the opening credits just to listen to the theme and it gets me so excited and hyped up every single time, haha! The score and musical composition are so brilliantly done. But then when you have musical geniuses, the Gregson-Williams brothers, you get a timeless masterpiece like this.

It gives me this dramatic feel at the beginning, then the beat drops with a smooth and gliding transition across the dance floor, a pause to reflect and soak it all in as the former continues and fades in the background, the dramatic beat returns with more fervour and then feels like a car manoeuvring twists and turns and all of that in repeating order.

"Charity has two functions in our world, my dear. The first is wholly good. The second is for people to climb into society who do not belong there."

She is not entirely wrong.

Another thing I love about this series is how they are handling and portraying the issue of racism. For instance, the erroneous assumption that every black person and family don't have the means and the 'good intention' to 'alleviate' their hardship. Know what they say about the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

Or the wide-eyed astonishment punctuated with gasps at a black person with intellect as we see was the reaction to Peggy's penmanship when it was discovered. As if it is a novel, out of this world achievement because somewhere deeply ingrained in the mindset, black people are incapable of rising to such feats.

Was that an assignation Mr Raikes had in mind? How salacious! After the over-ambitious maid, Turner's failed attempt last episode, she is meddling in another, allying with Oscar Van Rhijn. But I must commend, their interests do align. Now whether they will be a force to be reckoned with or their plans will be stopped before it sees the light of day remains to be seen. I do hope Mrs Russell finally smells that rat.

Negotiations were struck, love or money? Well, you know what choice was made. The Russells remain my favourite power couple.
