Chapter 9 of Gideon the Ninth

It's actually hilarious that Harrow just left a whole bunch of snippy little notes for Gideon, and knew exactly where to put them/where she would look, I can't actually manage that even with snippy little notes I leave for myself. Or maybe Harrow actually left a ton of other snippy little notes that Gideon just didn't notice? I can't decide which of those ideas is better

Probably woefully incomplete list of things that Gideon doesn't know about:

Tea

Sinks

Bathtubs

NIghttime

and she describes bread as "yeast bread" which makes me wonder what the fuck kind of bread they have on Pluto usually. Do they just use baking powder? Yeast is probably hard to get on Pluto, but certainly not like, any harder than wheat, surely, and if Earth is an hour away by shuttle, you'd think it would be easy to get basic life-sustaining stuff like bread?

Also, like, I know we are doing the medieval-aesthetic-in-space thing, but like, plumbing is not advanced technology, our Middle Ages were just a bit whack like that. The fucking ancient Minoans had pressurized indoor plumbing and flush toilets, I'm just saying, it is not that difficult to make some water go down some pipes. Also, like, they clearly have non-water-based alternatives, but I don't think plumbing ever actually becomes obsolete. You kind of need it for basic sanitation stuff, any high tech replacement for it would probably cost way more and ultimately not be necessary anyway, since plumbing is not a hard problem. If the issue is just that Pluto doesn't have water... that's dumb, because Pluto needs water anyway, because water is like the #1 most incredibly basic necessity for sustaining life in any context

Gideon talks about necromancers "programming" skeletons, which instantly makes necromancy 10000% more interesting to me as a programmer. I would love to know more about how this works, but since Gideon is the narrator I suspect that will not happen. I'm guessing Harrow narrates the next book, though, so maybe then?

Ianthe really seems to love mocking her sister for being dumb, she is going to have an absolute blast with Gideon

Who the hell has twins that are both the heir to your house, and then names one of them "Corona"? This is like in the Sims 2 when the Pleasants named their twins "Angela" and "Lillith", and then were like shocked pikachu face when Lillith grew up to be the "evil" twin

Ianthe's line to Gideon sounds like a threat (if only one of the twins is a necromancer, it's definitely Ianthe), but I have no idea what she thinks Gideon has done to merit this?

Actually, since necromancy seems to be inherited, it should theoretically be possible for an heir to a house to not be a necromancer, although it seems to be implied so far that they all are, or are all assumed to be. Like, if Corona isn't a necromancer, why was she sent to First House in the first place? Are there like, necromancer squids?

Ianthe definitely doesn't have a skeletal arm yet, since Gideon would have mentioned that. I wonder how that happens?

Rip Week Fics

It’s almost Rip Week 2021 and time for the brilliantly talented Rip fans to show us what they can do.

Before that though I thought I would look back at the fics I’ve done for Rip Week since I started joining in back in 2018.

2018

I only managed one fic for RipWeek for 2018 (only the first chapter was written for RipWeek which blossomed into a multi-chaptered story and a three story series).

Day 6 – Rip & The Future.

In The Dark - To his surprise, Rip doesn't die when the core explodes but instead is sent back in time with no way to contact anyone. Alone he has to make a life for himself but, as usual, Rip can't catch a break and there's still a fight to win.

2019

Day 1- The Many Faces of Rip Hunter – Rip wasn’t always Rip, he’s been Michael, Phil, Evil, a Time Master and Director of the Time Bureau. This is a day to explore all his facets and personalities.

Bedtime Stories, Breakfast and Being Together - Rip goes home to see his family.

Day 2: Crossovers, Fusions, and AUs – Do you have ideas for what happens when Rip meets Pikachu? Or perhaps you’ve plans for Rip hanging out with the Avengers. Alternate Universes are also welcome, from coffee shops to rock stars to ancient mythology, anything goes.

Thief- Gideon Ryder meets a very unusual man at a party thrown by Queen Consolidated but is he what he appears to be.

Day 3: Unusual Friends – Rip has had some interesting relationships with the Legends and people he’s met on his travels. This is a day to focus on all those unusual friendships, canon compliant or not.

What's A Little Time Travel Between Friends? - Rip recruits John Constantine for a mission but won’t give him any details.

Day 4: Ship Rip – It’s ship day. Romance is in the air. Give us content for Rip and the significant other or others that you’d like to see him with.

Reunited- “What are you doing here, Rip?” she asked softly. He swallowed nervously, “I wanted to see you.”

Day 5: Fix-It – Set right what once went wrong, re-write those episodes to make them better, fix those broken characters and generally turn Legends of Tomorrow into the show it should be.

A Bad Plan Is Better Than None - Sara let out an annoyed sigh, “Rip, you realise for someone with not much time to explain you’re talking a lot and not getting to the point.”

Day 6: Rip lives! – Rip survived overloading the time drive but how and where is he now?

Escape - “You called your dog, Tempus?”

Day 7: Free Day – Anything goes, so do your own thing and give us whatever you like.

Scarred By Time - Gideon awakes to find Rip alive, she is now controlling a building instead of her ship and that time has been changed so there are now no Heroes or Legends in the world. Their new mission is to fix everything but they’re going to need some help.

2020

Day 1: Friends and Family – We’re starting off the week with two things that Rip doesn’t have a lot of, or perhaps he does and he just hasn’t realised it.

Worth Something - Lifting a purse proves to have bigger consequences than Michael realised. Now in a world he doesn't understand he wants to trust that Miss Xavier cares for him. But no one ever has before, why would she?

Day 2: Perfect Episode – Rip left the show too soon, so give us the ideal episode that we never got. Alternatively, you can fix something to make it better, or give us that perfect scene that we never had. Canon compliance optional.

Nightmare Scenario - How do you live in a world you don't belong to? Rip does his best to survive while running the Time Bureau, while Sara does her best to make sure he doesn't disappear into his work. Danger however is on the horizon and Rip's life is about to be torn apart once more. A Season 3 rewrite.

Day 3: Playing Favourites – Pick your favourite moment, favourite line, favourite costume, favourite headcanons or anything else that you love and inspires you.

More Than A Coat - It was just a coat, but it held more memories than anyone could ever know. It wasn’t just a piece of cloth. The duster told the story of who he was.

Day 4: Time for Romance – Rip is a romantic at heart, ship him with whoever you think is right for him. Any pairing goes.

Stress Relief - Stuck with the annoying Lieutenant Coburn on a mission, Rip is being driven crazy. But it's a mission that will change his life forever.

Day 5: Infinite Earths – The Arrowverse may have collapsed the multi-verse, but imagination has no bounds. It’s Alternate Universe day.

Always A Team - Time Masters no longer work alone and Rip, Eve and Miranda are the best team they have. But there are still secrets in the Vanishing Point.

Day 6: No Body, Not Dead – Rip is definitely not dead, so where the hell is he? Is he on his way back to sort out the timeline or has he retired to a nice cottage by the sea?

The Only Title I Care About - Rip Hunter has been called many things in his life, but after everything that has happened, there is only one he cares to be called.

Day 7: Free Day – You’re free to give us anything you like, so let your imagination run wild.

Finding The Lost - Rip used the Time Core to stop Mallus. Waking from his coma this act put him in, Rip has no idea what surprises are waiting for him.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World Movie: Simple yet Amazing Choreography and Balancing Character Moments

Note: I haven’t read much of the comics so I’m just basing this off the movie itself

So after looking back on some movie adaptations I’ve watched, Jumangi, Detective Pikachu, I decided to watch the 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Is it my favorite movie? Not sure. It is definitely in my Top 5 I’m sure.

Why It Hits Differently For Me Now

I knew the general premise but wasnt really interested back in 2010. This might have been because I was into movies that involved saving the day instead of getting the girl. The trailers also didn’t focus the best aspects of this movie either so theres that.

Anyway lets get started, first off...

1. Seamless Transitioning Advantages

There are so many great transitions but starting of with the top one. Using simple objects like people, buildings or poles to help progress the interactions of numerous different but fittingly simple/casual topics(in this case its Scoot talking with Knives Chau)

2. Juxtaposition to Exemplify Other Characters

Scott rapidly pulling out a scribbled drawing with one hand and Comeau continuing to be casual

Wallace being concerned about someone he barely remembers

3. Presentation Variety for Repetitive Fight Scenes

Scott has to fight 7 main villains this movie each coming to him one by one. Despite the seeming repetitive, each one is enjoyable even when ignoring the video game, comic sounds despite Scott having the same powers against everyone, except the last.

Mathew Patel

The transitions from slow-mo to fast-paced punches and close up lunges really kick off from the original tone of the movie for this first fight.

Chris Evans(I just keep calling him by the actors name)

Then we get a far shot of Scott being throw at a castle, a villain walking to get coffee with Scott vs stunt doubles offscreen but having fighting sounds. Also another nice juxtaposition with Scott giving a non-estactic wow cuts while Evan skatboards on a dangerous grind.

Todd Ingram

Todd was basically overpowered so it makes sense his defeat would be less combat based.

Roxy Richter

Probably my favorite fight with it not only being the most fast-paced fight overall but also getting to see things such as Ramona wield her hammer so smoothly, Roxie throwing it with her whip but then getting counterattacked, etc.

Katayanagi Twins

Dont have much to say about the twins fight but this shot right here is awesome.

Gideon

Gideon is able to stand out by being built up far more than the others before the actual fight against Scott. Also interesting to see him in different outfits. Also make each of the three fights with him entertaining.

1st one Scott loses against first clash Gideon fight and it ends up being fists

2nd one Scott wins the first clash by gaining the power of self-respect,(symbolized by a badass sword)

owning up to things he knows is wrong for a change

3rd one is Scott teaming up with Knives and Gideon who uses his true power

4. Overall Funny Scenes

OUAT Characters if they were Pokemon Trainers Part 1: Henry, Emma, Regina, Killian, Rumple and Belle

Young!Henry Mills: Pikachu, Eevee, Dragonair, Larvitar, Ralts, Riolu

Explanation: The Heart of the Truest Believer, and also a major fan of the classics would have a team of Pokemon that by and large requires a lot of patience/friendship to build up his team. From there, older Henry would have a Raichu, Sylveon, Dragonite, Tyranitar, Gallade and a Lucario. Also, Henry has a Pokemon from each of his mothers’ teams: an offspring of Regina’s Gardevoir (which later becomes his Gallade), and an offspring of Emma’s Lucario. His Eevee was originally supposed to go to his father upon his reunion with Rumple, but then Neal died, so Rumple gave that Eevee to Henry. He’d most likely give Lucy a Pichu that came from his Raichu.

Emma Swan: Arcanine, Milotic, Lucario, Aegislash,Ampharos, Jirachi

Explanation: So I originally had Swanna on this team (because she’s Emma Swan), and I decided that a Milotic would be a more appropriate fit given her “Ugly Duckling” narrative. As the Savior, Emma is the only trainer that gets a legendary on her team, and I gave her the Pokemon that grants wishes (and like her would be the most likely to restore a happy ending). Finally,all of the other Pokemon represent some element of Emma’s personality that she is proud of (Arcanine-her loyalty, Lucario-her ability to keep fighting, Aegislash-where she comes from, Ampharos-a giver of light).

Regina Mills: Frosslass, Gardevoir, Chandelure, Spiritomb, Gothielle, Nidoqueen

Explanation: Our “queen, who is a bit more refined” definitely has a strong leaning to Dark/Ghost types due to her dabbling in dark magic and the deep impact her past has had on her. But also, Gardevoir, Gothielle and Nidoqueen are more emblematic of her status as royalty and the lighter sides of her personality. Bonus: Chandelure is on the team because of Regina’s love of making fireballs.

Killian Jones: Dhelmise, Gyrados, Feraligatr, Wailord, Carracosta, Swanna

Explanation: So as a pirate, Killian does have an almost entirely water based team (except for Dhelmise which looks like a ship’s wheel). All of these Pokemon by and large deal with pirate and water based “foes” of the water, except for Swanna who, of course, is for Emma.

Rumplestiltskin: Umbreon, Absol, Houndoom, Weavile, Zoroark, Hydregion

Explanation: The Dark One, so all Dark Pokemon. However, if you look at Pokemon like Umbreon, Absol, and Houdoom are also all loyalty and protective based, which would show Rumple’s love toward Belle, Neal and Gideon. He’d probably give Gideon an Eevee, and Gideon’s Eevee would most likely become an Espeon.

Belle: Espeon, Ninetails, Lapras, Meganium, Togekiss, Beautifly

Explanation: Belle has a team of pretty much gentle Pokemon that can kick ass and take name when provoked. Additionally, I thought it was important that Belle had an Espeon, to balance out Rumple’s Umbreon (just like she balances her husband out).

Alternate Universes are also welcome, from coffee shops to rock stars to ancient mythology, anything goes. Here is my little AU for today. Enjoy. ********************************************* The museum was somewhere Gideon never thought of as a venue for a party, but she did love the idea. Taking a quick breath, she put a smile on her face and started inside. She had been surprised, but amused, that her possible future employers were trying to woo her to their company by inviting her to a gala. She wasn’t sure she wanted to work for them, but it was a night out.

“Miss Ryder,” Robert Queen greeted her with a smile, “Welcome. I am so happy you decided to join us tonight.”

“It’s a pleasure to be here,” she said sweetly, “I do love museums.”

“Considering what you do, I must admit I wouldn’t expect you to,” Mr Queen noted amused.

“Just because I’m good with technology does not mean I can’t appreciate the arts,” Gideon replied archly.

He laughed, “I hope you’ll continue to consider my offer while you appreciate.”

Gideon smiled back, “I am thinking it through, Mr Queen but I have several offers to consider.”

“Then in that case,” he chuckled with a twinkle in his eyes, “Think of this as a bribe in our favour.”

Giving her another smile, he motioned her inside before turning to greet his next guest.

Walking further inside Gideon admired the paintings on the walls slightly irritated that she was here alone. Originally Ray was supposed to accompany her tonight but typically his long-distance girlfriend was in town. He’d given her the puppy-dog eyes and she’d told him it was fine to see Anna instead.

Grabbing a glass of champagne, Gideon stopped to look at one of the paintings, it was a landscape and she smiled admiring the vibrant colours.

“It’s beautiful,” a voice with a Star City accent came from her side making her turn to find a man standing there, tall with green eyes, a Romanesque nose and short sandy hair, “One of my favourites in this museum, although there is another by the same artist in Central City which is similar but just doesn’t have the same feel.”

“You sound like you know a lot about art,” Gideon noted, trying to work out why he was talking to her.

He shrugged, “I’ve spent a lot of time in museums.”

Gideon nodded, about to ask his name when he spoke again.

“I’m sorry,” he apologised, “I haven’t introduced myself. My mother would be utterly horrified by my bad manners. I’m Michael Xavier.”

Taking the hand he offered, she gave him a smile, “Gideon Ryder.”

“You have a lovely accent, Miss Ryder,” he noted, “Which part of England are you from?”

She shrugged, “Basically all of it. We moved every few years with my mother’s job. And you, are you native to Star City?”

“Born and raised,” Michael nodded, “Although I travel a great deal with my job.”

“Which is?”

“I curate several travelling exhibits including this one,” he explained.

“Which is why you spend a lot of time in museums,” she laughed in realisation.

“Would you like a guided tour?” Michael asked with a charming smile.

Gideon hesitated for a moment before nodding, “I would.”

They walked through the room, Michael stopping at each painting, statue and sculpture providing information on the artist, what it meant and anything else he thought she might find interesting. Gideon found herself quite fascinated by him. It was unusual for her to meet a man who wasn’t intimidated by her intelligence, but then again, she usually only met men within her own field. She was rarely in a situation where she didn’t know much about the subject.

Several hours passed and they continued to talk, Gideon surprised by how much she was enjoying herself when she had not expected to at all.

“I’m sorry,” Michael said suddenly, “I have to leave. It has been wonderful getting to know you, Gideon. I wish I could spend more time with you.”

Confused Gideon didn’t get a chance to say anything as he leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips before he disappeared. A little stunned and confused, Gideon was jerked out of her bemusement by an alarm sounding and guards running around.

“Mr Queen?” she asked when their host appeared at her side, “What happened?”

He grimaced before sighing, “A valuable statue has been stolen. It’s part of the travelling exhibition. Mr Jones, the curator of the exhibit has asked no one leave until they’ve searched the grounds.”

“Wait?” Gideon caught his arm, “The curator is called Jones, not Xavier?”

Queen frowned, “Yes. Why?”

She shook her head, “He was possibly just trying to impress me, but a man called Michael Xavier told me he was the curator.”

The man’s frown deepened, “I know everyone who was invited tonight, and the name Michael Xavier is not on the guest list.”

Catching one of the guards, Robert Queen had him bring up the security footage. He showed it to Gideon who stared stunned that Michael had somehow managed to hide his face from every single camera.

“I am so sorry, Mr Queen,” she breathed, horrified that she had been used by this man.

He rested his hand on her arm, “You had no way to know, Miss Ryder.”

When Mr Queen left her to talk to the man who was actually in charge of the exhibit Gideon sighed, she had liked Michael.

All in all, this was a definitive sign that working for Queen Consolidated was not for her.

Rip Hunter, (the real(ish) name of Michael Xavier), stood in front of the other man trying to keep himself focussed. He placed the bronze statue on the desk keeping his face blank as he apprehensively watched the man standing there.

“Very well done,” Druce noted, picking the statue up and examining it closely, “Stolen at the beginning of the night, you managed to stick around for several hours and didn’t get caught on camera at all. You were always my best pupil, Rip.”

Rip grimaced before replying, in his normal London accent, “As per our deal, this is it. We’re out for good.”

Shaking his head Druce sighed, “You’re both the best I’ve ever trained. You are the bar which everyone strives for.”

“Then it’s best that we leave at the top of our game,” Rip replied coldly.

Druce shook his head, “I have a lot of jobs coming up that I could use your expertise in.”

“Pass,” Rip stated, continuing quickly “I want everything you promised us now and then you will never see either of us again.”

Opening his safe Druce brought out the money he owed them, Rip caught his breath waiting for the other man to break his promise. Thankfully the envelope was placed on the table.

“Good luck, Rip,” Druce said, “I will miss you both.”

Without another word Rip grabbed the cash and left. Climbing into his car he slammed his hands against the steering wheel in annoyance before starting to drive.

Miranda looked up from her reading when Rip walked into the bedroom and dropped onto the bed beside her.

“Well?” she demanded.

Sliding his hand onto her large stomach, Rip nodded, “He gave me everything.”

She let out a long sigh of relief, “I admit I wasn’t sure he’d let us go.”

Rip nodded, “Neither was I.”

They lay together in silence for a while before Miranda winced as the baby kicked.

“Are you okay?” Rip asked worriedly at her yelp.

She rested her hand on his, “Of course I am. He’s just kicking me in the kidneys again. You don’t have to worry.”

Rip sighed, “Kind of hard not to worry about you.”

“I know,” she smiled at him sweetly, “Personally I want to know if you’re okay.”

“Why would I be anything else?” Rip asked confused.

Miranda gave him a smirk, “The woman you spent all night with. You liked her.”

Rip winced, “She was a good cover.”

“You kissed her, idiot,” Miranda laughed.

Sitting up confused he stared at her, “How…”

Laughing Miranda shook her head, “I hacked into the security cameras and listened in. I wasn’t letting you do that job without someone watching your back.”

Rip smiled slightly, he felt better knowing that she had been with him. He sighed as he thought back to the beautiful and brilliant woman that he’d spent the evening talking to.

“You did like her,” Miranda sympathised, wrapping her arms around one of his, “I’m sorry.”

Shrugging Rip hugged her, “Considering I just used her as a cover to steal something, not to mention I’m about to become a father. I don’t think she would be amenable to spending any time with me.”

“Hey,” Miranda cuddled against him, “We were idiots, got completely drunk and I’m now pregnant. You’re my best friend, Rip. We have been together forever and no matter what we’ll always be there for each other but that doesn’t mean we both can’t find someone.”

“There is still the issue of me using her tonight to avoid getting caught,” Rip sighed.

Miranda chuckled.

“Forget about it,” Rip said decisively, “We have all the money we need, Druce has let us go and we have a plan for our security business. From now on we look to the future.”

“The future,” Miranda agreed, miming clinking a glass making him laugh.

Hugging her tightly Rip let out a sigh, they were free from Druce and they were with one another.

No matter what, they’d face the future together.
