breakfast milk and thin cake and A- milk and Baragone thin cake and off at 5 – Gave our Kelossans’ wife ½ silver ruble – She thanked me but had she expected a silver ruble? our people probably gave her nothing – at 5 8/.. at the bottom of village I alight to see the interior of one of the tall white towers – 6 stories 6ft. high + 2 or 3ff. for each floor – boards or flags resting on the side wall and leaning on a strong beam in the middle so black and dark I could scarce grope my way – a low stable or cowhouse generally rez de chaussée of these towers – I got up to the 2nd story but the ladders so difficult and the 3ft. floor hole one had to creep thro’ so difficult (could not see the little pigeon hole steps in the corner) that I had not time to go beyond the 2nd story (the 2me) a loophole window in the 2nd story, and a little window in each of the one or 2 highest stories – these towers very cuprous have now generally a house built up against them of one or 2 stories (a kitchen fire Spanish Pyrenees) – the tower 4 yards square within – 10 minutes there – found A- sketching – off again at // 5 22/.. – cross streams and wood bridge (joggling as usual) over rapid Tsheshōōri from valley left and go to Tchiora [Chiora] for escort (accompanied by our Kelossan) and thinking to have my horse shod – could not be done at Rĕbi – no blacksmith there – at Tchiora [Chiora] at 6 ½ - alighted at good shed – asleep – the blacksmith not being found would not wait – Escort of 6 men and off at 7 ½ - at 7 50/.. at the river – 2 broad rapidly streams – 2 trees over 1st – only one over the 2nd but a little flattened at the top the trees carrying hollow 10 to 12 yards – I told George he had better take the baggage off – he thought he could ride thro’ very well durst not cross over the bridges? – I myself took off A-‘s burca and bag (that is baggage) and my own, and A- set off – frightened cur was carried over the 1st very well – on the 2nd (the one tree) the man who carried her staggered 2/3 way over – frightful! – another man run to him and between them A- was safe over – I stood watching them! then followed hold of one man whose only fault was going too slowly – obliged to look at ones’ feet and the rapid stream made me feel giddyish – the 1st stream rapid deep and broad, and the other as bad – the horses crossed rather higher up and never lost their feet – tho’ up to or above the belly in one or little bits – ¼ hour in getting all over – off again at 8 5/.. – at 8 42/.. cross glen stream and in all the fine deep dark pine scenery – in 5 minutes more at our Saturdays’ breakfast place (under the Spruce fir tree) – hot sun now at 8 47/.. and at 9 ¼ had just crossed the joggling bridge over the Rion – the acidulated spring said George as told by Adam 1 hour below this bridge – (the great trees are burnt into great holes at the bottom to make charcoal) – from this bridge turn (left) up the valley for a very short way and then turn (right) up the Glola valley cross wooden bridge over Glolatskali (Gloga-river = half the Rion) fine wood valley – our road thro’ a thick wood chiefly of beech – our escort carry their guns uncased and ready and look carefully into the wood on both sides at every

step is if expecting a party of Ossètes to [?] out upon us – ascend steepish little hill to good grassy, and here at 9 50/.. Glola and its picturesque old castle in sight, and they want to stop to feed the horses – no! go forward at Glola, and ride thro’ the village up to the spring and at it at 10 ½ - A- drank a little of the water I 2 of my glasses (the glass contains about 2/3 gill) the water very agreeable slightly chalybeate avec une forte dose d’acide carbonique a soldier was bottling the water tying down corks and covering over with goudron immediately champaign-wise, for General Espego at Koutaïs – the run of water would not do more than fill an inch bore pipe at a moderate pressure – the man had reared up a few poles covered with leafy twigs and branches for a shelter from the sun – otherwise the water falls into a little trough or hole in the rock that it has worn for itself and is perfectly open to all the world – A- anxious to lie down – wanting to be back at Oni tonight fix to bait the horses when the men wanted to stop in coming and then ride the rest of the way without stopping – at 10 I ran off across the river (wood bridge) to the old castle – an old church there – and 2 or 3 old square towers and considerable remains of old walling – quite a ruin, but very picturesquely commanding the village the very pretty neat picturesque village below – several of the little courts trashing floors before the houses – 3 or 3 with neat nice balconies verrandahs as chez le prince Yuri Eristaf in Baragone – have not seen in the Caucasus a nicer little village than Glola – the acidulated spring a little distance (20 yards?) from right bank of rapid Glolatskali but apparently about the same level as the river or not much above it? – down from the castle – beckoned for the horse s (A- gone) waited a moment in the verandah of a nice house not quite finished and remounted and off at 11 20/.. – had to turn back about fresh escort, and for the little chesnut horse which the Jew had sent here, not knowing where we were – the man charged for 3 days keep – not my concern – off once more at 11 40/.. Adam leading the little horse for our man from Oni now left us his master the prince Mourave of Outséré being here – he sent him with us says George nor I nor George knowing anything about this at the time – overtook A- in 20 minutes lying down under a tree – nothing for the horses to eat – doubting what to do for the best when she said she was not asleep – she remounted and we alighted at the good pasture at 12 20/.. – here under the shade of great hazels rested very comfortably – I read Dubois ii. Glola and Ghèbi Rêbi as they call it till 1 35/.. gave our 6 men 3 abasses – returned 1 of the abasse as not good – there was a little hole in it – I had received it in change at Oni, and would not change it – Adam settled the matter – the men said thank you but had probably expected more – Say from here back

Began to feel very bilious and sick about 8 this morning and could not begin to be settled and comfortable till about noon – Brought up a good deal of bile –
I[sabella] N[orcliffe] and Miss V– [Vallance] went to Malton in the gig – Charlotte came and staid by my bedside – From before 2 to just before I got up – Long conversation about dispositions friends etc. She had but two. Neither could be much with her, she had better make more. She hinted that Mrs. Bevan might sometime or other live with her. Thought I was not much better off than she, for I never saw π [Mariana] and Tib was a great deal from home.
I merely said it would not be difficult to prove she was incorrect and could not help laughing in my sleeve – She meant to be kind and attentive, and we began to get on together again as well as ever. But I could not but silently exclaim as she left me, ‘What a cold, heartless, disagreeably mannered girl that is to me’ –
A little giddyish on getting up but very well afterwards. Miss V– Vallance played a little on the piano in the evening – Came upstairs at 10 1/2 – Very fine day –
Went to curl my hair and staid half hour with V [Miss Vallance] after Tib was in bed – Did not feel her much. She said I hurt her yesterday, meaning made her wet and uncomfortable, and I promised if she would give me a real kiss when we had an opportunity I would behave well –

little or no motion In dressing felt giddyish, but so long since I have had a sick headache (have scarcely had one in France) hardly thought of it till it came on just after finishing dressing – sick once – nothing on my stomach nothing to come but a little bile – then tried breakfast – 2 grapes and a little of my bread steeped in my boiled milk – soon found this would not do – could not keep it on my stomach – sent away the breakfast things about 10 1/2 – of course, did not attempt to read prayers – sat dozing in my chair over the fire (almost gone out) till 1 1/2 – then read a little of comte de N–‘s (Noé’s) book on the English expedition to Egypt in 1800 – no hope of being able to dine there – at 2 sent off note to Madame de N– (Noé) – of excuse saying I had so bad a sick headache I could scarce bear to move, and even wrote with difficulty – began Dear Madame de Noe ended very truly yours – then read again – altogether from page 56 to 118 – then about 4, came 2nd volume Captain Hall’s America – read the first 74 pages – changed my dress –
Dinner at about 5 50/60 – afterwards skimmed over all the paper and eat a good many grapes, and came to my room at 7 40/60, wrote and sent at 8 dear Sir Note to “Monsieur Monsieur Wright Rue Taitbout no. 15” to say they wished to have the parcel as soon as they could at the Rectory and I was particularly desired to beg him to direct it there to Miss Norcliffe “the moment he got to London” quoting IN–‘s (Isabella Norcliffe’s) words on the end of Mrs James Dalton’s letter –
Lady and Miss Vavasom called between 2 and 3 – came upstairs and Cameron said I was not at home – had not sense to say I was ill – wrote a note dated this morning sorry they had the trouble of calling as I had been confined to my room all the day with a bad sick headache and was scarcely able to move or speak – had wished much to see Lady V– (Vavasour) meaning to ask if she would allow me to join her party to the ball tomorrow as my sick head aches, however severe, seldom lasted more than 24 hours, and I still hoped to be about to go – should be there before 8 – she would almost pass my door would she call? hoped to be out early in the morning, should I have any chance of seeing her if I called at 11? At dinner doubting whether to send this note or not – determined to see how I was tomorrow – wrote the above of today, and have just done now at 8 3/4 – well or ill, there will be a great crowd tomorrow – 3000 people – much trouble to get there and get away – to dress etc. etc. – perhaps I shall stay at home and do my accounts –
read a few pages of Captain Hall from page 74 to 92 – tried a little motion all in vain   Coffee at 9 25/60 – came to my room at 10 35/60 – then settled my accounts and read from page 118 to 148 and from page 205 to 263 Comte de Noé – Fine day – I believe – Fahrenheit 33° at 8 1/4 a.m. and 35° at 3/4 past midnight –

Tuesday 31 December 1822
9 20/60
11 35/60
L
Down to breakfast at 10 1/4 – I thinK the quince-marmalade may have disagreed with me – I lay quietly in bed this morning and went downstairs pretty well, but no sooner had I swallowed the marmalade than I began to feel giddyish and queerish –
Long and very Kind letter from Mrs. N-[Norcliffe] (Langton) this morning 3 pp.[pages] the ends, under the seal, and all the spare paper at the top of page 1 – Dr. Simpson found Mrs. Dalton better than he expected – she was ‘suffering chiefly’ said Dr. S-[Simpson] in his note to mrs. N-[Norcliffe] ‘from dispepsia or Indigestion’ – nothing else in the letter very particular –
Came upstairs at 11 5/60 – sat over the fire writing down my accounts from memoranda Kept since I left home – Till very near 6, adding up summaries, etc. the sum of all the summaries, and that of all the monthly totals, and that at the close of my account today, ought, of course, to be the same – ‘Tis odd and provoKing enough, that there is a very small difference between each one of these 3 sums, and I must looK every item of my whole this account over again, a worK of no little trouble – I could not help feeling vexed and mortified at first – but I am determined not to be beaten, and, cost me what pain it may, I will have the account right to a farthing before I have done with it –
In the evening read to my pp.[pages] 50. the preface, and the 1st 39 pp.[pages] of the worK itself of volume 2. JenKin on the Xtn.[Christian] religion – Very fine, frosty day – but have not stirred out – Barometer 1 3/4 degree below changeable Fahrenheit 24 1/2º at 9 p.m. – The end of another year! God grant that I may go on improving in virtue, in happiness, and in Knowledge! – came upstairs at 10 35/60 –

Fahrenheit 50º at 7 5/.. and fine morning - sat on the rug  forty minutes after being rather cramped o[n] the pot very bilious for some time after getting into bed last night, and not asleep till near 2 - stood reading Freind’s history of medicine (bought the other night) about 20 minutes then felt so giddy and bilious obliged to go to bed again -
dozed a little and asleep when george awoKe me at 11 50/.. to say there was a letter - this awaKing did me no good - got up - Letter from marian (Shibden) 3 pp.[pages] and the ends - dated Monday the 11th inst. read it - gave it to my aunt to read - and got into bed again
my aunt then came about one, and sat on my bedside, and staid till 2 - still bilious having been able to be really sicK - lay dozing and musing till 3 40/.. at which hour got up - stood reading Le Temps 20 minutes - then washed and dressed still giddyish, and unwell - was dressed at 5 1/4 - then writing part of copy of letter to Marian which finished after dinner - dinner at 6 5/.. - came to my room at 7 1/2 - coffee at 9 20/.. - talKing to my aunt about marian and Shibden - came to my room at 11 5/.. at which hour Fahrenheit 49 1/2º and fine night - fineish dullish day, said my aunt -
talked freely to her of Marians letter irritated at her manner of expressing herself but said she knew no better - marian thought my letter (received Thursday the 7th inst.) required ‘the most serious consideration’ or she should have written more immediately, yet after all her consideration ‘to have every contingency provided for’ the following is her reply to the most material part of what was proposed
‘In respect to pecuniary matters, as I have no wish to gain, so I have no doubt should there be any serious deficiency, it would be your desire to obviate it - as to the 2 requests made for our 2 maids to have the green room and for the parlour to be painted and papered, - she answers, that she thinks the parlour chamber will be preferable tho’ my aunt may take her choice on her arrival -
and that ‘as to papering and painting, we are quite sure’ my aunt is not at all aware the room is really not in want of one or other, cordingley says it was ‘papered and painted a few years ago - the paper looKs as well as any would in a short time, and the room requires ‘painting much less than other part of the house - the grate cordingley says is bad, and is to be examined’!!!
She says ‘macDonald must have the entire care of my aunt's room and her own - I must say I thinK your having so many servants, ‘considering the accommodation, a serious inconvenience, a man servant I thinK absolutely requisite when you are here, the maid is the stumbling blocK’ - so that, out of the 3 servants, she owns that my man servant is necessary, and of course, my aunt’s maid is acKnowledged necessary, and ⸫[therefore] only one is, as she observes, ‘the stumbling blocK’ which S.
