The Gävle Goat

Official 2023 Youtube Stream The birds are Jackdaws (Corvus monedula) and the occasional duck. They show up promptly at first light (usually around 8:25-8:20 am local time, you can see the time in the upper-left hand corner of the stream) and leave after 10-20 minutes. The straw used to make the goat was unusually full of seeds this year.

In Honor of The Eaten

Oh the guards were guarding grumbly,

And the birds were flocking hungrily,

And it seems: that the flames will fail to be,

Sounds: like the car won't ram you see,

Looks: like the end of the Goat will be,

Food. For. Birds.

Side Note: how are the lights on the horns powered? is there a way to over charge them and blow a fuse? is that how lights even work? the arsonist seem to always gave lighters but if you just put like a hazard vest on and went over to the power source i feel you could do some damage

Listen humans can and will light anything on fire given the chance. This goat burned down the first year it was put up and people have been trying to do it ever since

There's just something so naughtily whimsical about seeing a holiday decoration and destroying it but like .... in a fun and dramatic way? The goat survives some years which I think is fantastic because then every holiday season you think "will this be the year???" And now the whole world is in on this drama and it's beautiful

Overloading the lights might work, but I think there would be very little chance of it actually catching. Someone has literally shot a flaming arrow into it and it didn't catch, so I think you need an option that either involves an accelerant or being exposed to a flame for longer*

Honestly the whole Gävlebocken tradition is ridiculous. Not because of the arson; that's the most beautiful thing. But because the city REFUSES to acknowledge it as a part of the tradition. They could really make something wonderful of it. Turn it into a festival, open market stalls, encourage people to come and enjoy the spectacle. They could be making money on it too! It has the potential to become a tourist destination and draw in people from all over!! Instead they spend boatloads on private security and fences and webcam streams. Embrace the dumb tradition and get the stick out of your ass, Gävle.

Besides, fire is cleansing. Close out the year with a giant pyre, eat and get drunk, and start fresh the next morning.
