I read this magical poem when I was 13, and I have been hooked on tales of the sea, whether fact or fiction, ever since. Doré's illustrations in the original edition are wonderful, but the images conjured in my mind by the poem itself were even more striking. The adventure, the glory, the hardship, the horror...all of it combined, creating an irresistible desire to find more tales like this.

I started reading all I could find about sailors, the sea, and their stories. Drake and Cook, Nelson and Jones, Hornblower and Aubrey, Shackleton and Scott...plus lots of pirates and privateers, of course. Even merchant captains of the Old China Trade had their say, with wondrous new countries and cultures to explore on the far side of the world. With no lack of engaging stories, I even managed to learn some history along the way.

And yet, there's still so much out there! Decades after reading that poem, I still learn something new every day. My current obsession is Francis Crozier, captain of the ill-fated HMS Terror, known best for being part of the lost Franklin Expedition (1845). He was a man who left a meager paper trail, with no memoir, and few official honors or accolades; yet, his career and accomplishments in the years before Franklin are the stuff of legends. Entering the Royal Navy in the middle of the Napoleonic Wars at age 13, he dedicated his entire life to his country's service. An explorer, scientist, consummate sailor and commander, who went to both polar regions, and everywhere in between...yet his full story has been sadly neglected, for reasons that make no sense today. I came across him quite by accident, via AMC's tv series, "The Terror," a fictionalized account of what might have happened to the crew of the Franklin Expedition. Intrigued by the character, I wanted the full story of the real man. It is, unfortunately, elusive, but not for lack of looking. The search to fill in the holes continues. 😉

So, this is a place for me to stash things I like. Sailors, ships, soldiers and stories, mostly from the Age of Sail, Napoleonic and American Revolutionary Wars, Arctic Explorations, and literature of or about those periods.
