Siblings: Rhekka bihn Gamduhla is Sierra's much-younger, more-chaotic sister. Her and Sierra see eye-to-eye on very little.

 In-laws and Other:  Since she married Yrja, she's only got, uh, Fran and Balthier as in-laws. Well, technically anyway; it's likely neither of them know Sierra even exists.

Jan de Herdt - Portrait of Franz Augustin von Waldstein as a Knight of Malta - 1660s

Jan de Herdt, in Italy also called Il fiammingo (Antwerp, c. 1620 – between 1686 and 1690) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman. After training in Antwerp, he spent his entire career abroad, first in Northern Italy and later in Vienna and other cities in central Europe. He was mainly a portrait artist but also painted genre scenes as well as religious, mythological and allegorical subjects. He was part of a network of Flemish and Dutch painters working for the court, aristocracy and ecclesiastical institutions of central Europe.

Jan de Herdt's brother had preceded him as he was working in Vienna as a goldsmith to the court and may have been instrumental in introducing Jan to the court in Vienna. While he is believed to have arrived in Vienna around 1660, Jan is first documented in Vienna on 8 January 1662. On that date he signed his name in the ecclesiastical registers of the Schottenkirche (Scottish church) in Vienna as he together with the Flemish engraver Franciscus van der Steen acted as a witnesses at the wedding of the Dutch artist Hans de Jode. Jan de Herdt later collaborated with van der Steen on a series of aristocratic portraits for the publication Historia di Lepoldo Cesare. Frans Geffels also contributed to this publication. In Vienna, de Herdt painted portraits of courtiers as well as history paintings for their chateaux and palaces. He appears in the business records of Forchondt, a family business of art dealers from Antwerp who served clients throughout Europe and had a branch in Vienna. The son of the founder of the family business trained as a goldsmith with Jan's brother in Vienna. The records of the Forchondt firm show that in 1671 Prince Schwarzenberg bought a painting on the subject of Armida and Rinaldo, which was likely the Rinaldo preventing Armida's suicide by de Herdt (now in the former Augustinian monastery in Brno).

Jan may have been active in Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou (now in the Czech Republic) from the beginning of 1666 to January 1667. From 1666 to 1668 de Herdt worked in Brno. He is recorded in Prague in 1680 where he had accompanied the court when it fled Vienna due to an outbreak of the plague.[8] He was in Třebíč from 1880 to 1881 and, in this last year, also in Znojmo. In 1684 he executed two works for patrons in Prague but these were possibly created elsewhere. The last report of his presence in Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou dates back to 1686. After 1686 there is no more news of the artist.

The exact time and place of his death are not known. There are no records about him after 1686. It is believed he died sometime between 1686 and 1690 in Central Europe.

He knelt in front of her, holding her head upright, hand on her cheek. "Come on, Hayden, I need you to wake up… Please..."

She moved into his hand and he felt her take a deep breath. As her face began to drift into a relaxed position, the static began to fade.

Glen barely had time to feel the relief when he heard two quick claps behind him. Standing in the doorway, Stan had a concerned look on his face, cigarette dangling out of his mouth. It would have been comical if the situation were different.

"Did it work?" Hayden's voice jumped in, tone indicating she was unaware of preceedings.

In a matter of seconds, he was in front of her, pulling her up, holding her tightly against him. As her arms curled around his back, head resting on his shoulder, he felt himself relax as well.

Thinking himself in control of his emotions, Glen took a step back. All it took was one look at her confused face, just one and he fell back to instincts once more. In seconds, he pulled her close, lips meeting hers. The desperate nature behind it was reminiscent of their interactions on the road. Slowly, he regained himself and his hands made their way to sit on her shoulders, pulling back to give her a look over once more.

Oblivious to any previous danger, she let out a breathy laugh, but his expression stayed set with concern. "I'm not complaining about the wake up, but--"

"Are you alright?"

Another chuckle was made at the notion that she wouldn't be, but it stopped once she spotted the red stain on his shirt. Right where her face had been. Her hand shot up to her nose and pulled back with fresh blood. She realized now.

"Fuck me, what happened...?"

That luck was short lived as Hayden threw the door open and reached the control panel. She really didn’t know what else she should have expected. Even if she did have her key card, it would be no use, any pull she had was bound to be removed sometime ago. And now with this damn thing weighing around her neck impeding her ability to do anything beyond normal physical means…

"There might have been a way with magic, but I can't—" And then it hit her. She couldn’t. Her magic was shot. Didn't mean they couldn't use magic at all. "Do you trust me?"

"Do I really need to answer that?"

While Glen’s smile, his subdued attempt at humor, the conviction he had for her, it was all appreciated but, the response wasn’t exactly what she was looking for. Their faith in each other had been established some time ago.

"You, no. Lloyd, yes."

Wide eyes looked back at her as Lloyd was thrown on the spot. His hesitance was highlighted, and indicated he was astutely aware of where this type of question usually led. Nowhere good. And he was terrified of what it was about to put on him.

"Shit, when you say it like that…"

All that was needed to stress the urgency was the sound of a body smashing alongside the nearby wall, a reminder of what was happening around them to prompt a more direct answer.

"Fuck, yes! I trust you, okay!"

Relationship Status: Relationship anarchist-adjacent

I have some partners and friends that have certain privileges and proximity that others don't, but a lot of that is done by whatever is practical and fair. For example when I look to hangout with partners I usually go by who asked first and/or who I haven't talked to as much recently which are both sort of attempts at fairness even in the context that only one or two of my relationships will probably lead to a structure that's similar to what monogamous people would recognize. Also I'm aromantic so most of my relationships are ??? and some of the oldest ones have romo aspects but barely.

Favorite Color: Varies per headmate, purple is probably current favorite with blue and then green or gold after that. Maybe pink in there somewhere too but that's mostly just from me, Fran.

Favorite Food: Pizza! Maybe something like Mac and cheese or chicken nuggets after that, food is hard lol

Join us for the Chicago premiere of Liang Luscombe’s new short film, the science fiction extravaganza Malamadre (2022). Taken from the Spanish word for the ‘bad mother’ spider plant, Malamadre is the latest work in Luscombe’s ongoing surreal comedy series that follows Sol and Fran on their intergalactic odyssey away from the financial horrors of Earth and towards the planet Howl. 

Opening with a sickly Fran and a hangry alien puppet Alice, the film immediately casts doubt on the promise of Howl as a utopia. What Fran finds instead is a strange matriarchal world of asexual reproduction where mothers feed on their young. Will Fran reckon with her maternal fears and finally enjoy a symbiotic alien relationship? Moreover, will she make use of the planet’s five hundred beaches before they close at 5pm?

To set the stage for Malamadre, the evening will be begin with three short films that also circle on the theme of the monstrous mother and the femme body as a site of complex meaning: Claire Lambe’s I Think I’m turning into a Monster (2021), Ilana Harris-Babao’s Decision Fatigue (2020) and Lucy Beech’s Reproductive Exile (2018).

Liang Luscombe’s practice encompasses painting, sculpture, and moving image that engage in a process of questioning how images and film affect audiences. She received her MFA at Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. She has been included in screenings at ACMI, Melbourne; Composite, Melbourne; Liquid Architecture, Melbourne; AceOPEN, Adelaide; MetroArts, Brisbane; OpenTV, Chicago; Comfort Station, Chicago; and Vehicle, NYC. She has undertaken residencies at Chicago Artist Coalition’s HATCH residency program, Chicago, 2019; SOMA Summer, Mexico City, 2018; Australia Council Studio, British School at Rome, 2013; and Perth Institute of Contemporary Art Studio Residency, Perth, 2011.

Ilana Harris- Babou’s work is interdisciplinary; spanning sculpture and installation, and grounded in video. She speaks the aspirational language of consumer culture and uses humor as a means to digest painful realities. Her work confronts the contradictions of the American Dream: the ever unreliable notion that hard work will lead to upward mobility and economic freedom. She has exhibited throughout the US and Europe, with recent survey exhibitions at Kunsthaus Hamburg, Germany & the ICA Chattanooga, USA. Other venues include The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, USA; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, USA; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Denmark; and West Space, Melbourne, Australia.

Melbourne-based artist Claire Lambe draws from film, music, and traditional sculptural practice to create psychologically complex spaces that invite speculation on the human body as both matter and intermediary. Raised in Macclesfield, North of England in the 1970s, Lambe acknowledges the complexity of leaving, a probing flirtation between transformation, hostility, and tenderness. Lambe trained as a traditional sculptor, and holds degrees from Bristol College of Art, Bristol, United Kingdom; University of New South Wales, Collage of Fine Arts, Sydney; and Goldsmiths, London, United Kingdom. Recent major exhibitions include, The Body Electric, National Gallery Australia, Canberra, curated by Shaune Lakin and Anne O'hehir in 2020; From Will to Form, Tarrawarra Biennale, curated by Emily Cormack in 2017; and Mother holding something horrific, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, curated by Annika Kristensen and Max Delany in 2017. Lambe was awarded the Australia Council, ACME International Residency, London, United Kingdom, 2018; and the Edwards Trust award, ISCP, New York, USA, 2015/2016.

Lucy Beech is an artist whose practice encompasses filmmaking, writing, and performance. Her current research project focuses on the social, cultural, and ecological implications of managing reproduction. Forthcoming and recent presentations of Beech’s film and performance work include MADRE—Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina, Naples; SALT Beyoğlu, Istanbul, in collaboration with Cooking Sections and Kunstverein GartenHaus Vienna (all 2021); Biennial Matter of Art, Czech Republic (2020); Extra City Kunsthal, Antwerp (2019); Lafayette Anticipations, Paris; Tramway, Glasgow; De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea (2018); Tate Britain, London (with Edward Thomasson 2017); and the Liverpool Biennial (2016).
