Okay 200 pages into Foundryside now and, lmao.

Sancia gets away with hiding the incredible valuable relic everyone wants in her boot while getting interrogated by people who absolutely do not trust her. How? Well you see, the three of them are a) a noble scion who deals with his immense moral injury by spending every waking minute being the soul of chivalry b) a mad scientist who can't bear to touch blood (or filth, or poor people), and c) apparently just an incredibly repressed lesbian.

So basically she gets away with it because everyone was too awkward to actually strip-search her and just gave up after a cursory pat-down.

I am actually laughing.

I went to the library sale :) i am a picky bastard and only got hardcovers with the removable dustjacket covers , so they're pristine on the outside! I've read the wayward children books, the others are on my tbr.

~100 pages into Foundryside and it's really scratching the whole fantasy heist story itch.

By which I mean the whole setting shares basically the exact aesthetic sensibility of the Thief games I played with my dad as a kid, and also the protagonist is a escaped-magical-experiment career thief whose realized she was hired to steal something that's way too valuable to let her live after turning it over.

Great time so far!

start of a high fantasy trilogy, set in a capitalist city run by four merchant houses that control the magical technology known as scriving: a language that codes commands into objects

a young woman who can sense scrived objects & survives as a thief steals something that turns out to be extremely powerful, and someone in the merchant houses would do anything to get it back

so she teams up with some unlikely allies to stop them & save herself

The man-thing slowly started to rotate to face her. The sound of flapping winds was deafening now, as if the night sky were thick with invisible butterflies.

Terror filled her, wordless and shrieking and mad. No! No, I can’t! I can’t let him see me, I can’t LET HIM SEE ME!

The thing raised a black hand, fingers extended to the sky. The air quakes and the sky shuddered.

Then there was a tremendous crack sound and the vision faded.”
