An Amazigh separatist movement in Algeria has enlisted an American lobbyist based in Morocco to help it make a case for support from US officials and lawmakers built on concerns over Algiers' deepening ties to Russia and harsh crackdown on pro-democracy protests. The Movement for the Autonomy of Kabylia (MAK), whose leadership is based in Paris, calls for independence for the predominantly Amazigh region in Algeria's northern mountains. According to registration documents filed this week at the US Department of Justice, MAK has recruited Elisabeth Myers, an American lawyer, to represent it in Washington. The contract was signed on 25 June. Myers registered as a lobbyist using an address in Marrakech on the same day. “Activities will involve promotion of US friendship with Kabylia, along with an understanding of the region, its people, and the impact of the Algerian government's strong-arm tactics over the region,” the documents say. MAK has already secured meetings with two US lawmakers’ offices. On Thursday, Kabylie independence leader Ferhat Mehenni will meet virtually with senior officials from Democratic Senator Tim Kaine’s office and Democratic Congressman Don Beyer, a source familiar with the matter told Middle East Eye.[...]
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US made a bid to pull Algeria away from Moscow’s orbit. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visited the country in March 2022 as part of a wider trip to the region that included a stop in Morocco. A US spokesperson said Blinken vowed to "broaden and deepen the [US] relationship with Algeria."
But Algiers has proven resistant. In June, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune met Putin on a visit to Russia designed to strengthen cooperation between the longtime allies. Western countries have had more success gaining access to Algeria’s massive gas reserves. US energy giants Chevron and Exxon are nearing a deal that would allow them to drill in the country for the first time, Algeria’s energy minister told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month. But European countries’ rush to find alternatives to Russian gas has also empowered Algeria, which has replaced Russia as the top gas supplier to Italy, and is now shopping around for Italian-made military hardware. It is also locked in a rumbling dispute with Spain over the status of Western Sahara which has brought non-energy trade between the two countries to a halt.[...]
The separatist group's bid for influence in Washington could prove to be an indicator of the future direction of Washington’s wider relations with Algeria, a major North African exporter of gas and oil.
Algeria designated MAK a terrorist organisation in 2021. Authorities accused the group of working with Morocco and Israel to start deadly forest fires in the Kabylia region. MAK and Morocco denied the allegations. A 2021 US State Department terrorism report called the terrorism label “more political than security focused,” adding that Algerian authorities refrain from discussing the group or its threats with their US counterparts.[...]
Algeria hosts and supports the Polisario Front, a rebel movement that established the self-declared Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in 1973 in the disputed Western Sahara, which Morocco annexed in 1975 after the end of Spanish colonial rule. The US unilaterally recognised Moroccan sovereignty over the territory in exchange for Rabat's normalisation of ties with Israel. Amazighs [...] are an ethnic group scattered across Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Libya whose roots in the region predate the Arab conquest of North Africa. Amazighs are believed to account for about 20 percent of Algeria’s 44 million population. Their culture and language have historically been suppressed by the Algerian government. Amazigh activists played a prominent role in the Hirak movement.

GREAT BALL OF FIRE!
Lucille Ball and the Fire Department
Tumblr media
Where there’s smoke - there’s Lucy!  Lucy’s encounters with the fire department are legendary - even becoming a volunteer firefighter on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“I Love Lucy” wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who helped bring the studio up to code for filming when live audiences were introduced to the mix. Previously, audiences were not permitted on film sets due to fire codes. Ironically, the show’s sponsor was a cigarette company, at a time when smoking indoors was commonplace.
Tumblr media
In “Be A Pal” (1951), Lucy sets fire to Ricky’s newspaper to get his attention! Considering all the trouble and cost Desi had to assure the studio audience’s safety for the Los Angels Fire Department, it is amazing this gag was allowed!
Tumblr media
“Fred and Ethel Fight” (1952) ~ When Fred and Ethel patch things up, Lucy and Ricky start feuding, leading to Lucy to pretend to be hit by a bus and Ricky to stage a fire in the apartment to test each other’s affection. Ricky and Fred use a toy siren and a beekeepers smoker to convince Lucy the building’s ablaze.
Tumblr media
Moments from the episode, including the aftermath of the ‘fire’ were recreated for the 2021 film Being the Ricardos.
Tumblr media
In “The Marriage License” (1953), one of the many hats worn by Mr. Willoughby (Irving Bacon) is fireman, presumably of the Connecticut town of Greenwich where the scene is set. Mr. Willoughby mistakes Lucy’s red hair for the flames of a fire. His helmet says “Engine 1″.
Tumblr media
In "Too Many Crooks" (1953), suspecting Lucy to be Madam X, Fred and Ethel spy on her from the fire escape. Fire escapes were common features of New York City apartment buildings, a series of metal ladders allowing residents to get out of the building in case of a fire. They were most famously represented in the musical West Side Story.
Tumblr media
A running plot point of the first season of “The Lucy Show” (1963) has Lucy and Viv recruiting their friends to serve as the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department. Naturally, Lucy serves as Captain.
Tumblr media
Six weeks earlier, in “Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna” (1962), two firemen help Lucy and Viv off the roof when their DIY installation of a TV aerial goes wrong. Chuck Roberson and Hubie Kerns play the firemen.
Tumblr media
Lucy is dismayed that nearby towns have a fire department, while Danfield has none. In “Lucy and Viv are Volunteer Fireman” (1963), the first episode to begin the plotline, Lucy writes to her congressman about the situation.
Dear Senator Dodds;
I feel it is my duty to point out an alarming situation which exists here in Danfield. Because of re-zoning in the county our fire department has been transferred to Ridgebury many, many miles away. As a result, in case of a fire, defenseless women and little children will be left helpless to face a flaming inferno. Until this outrageous condition is rectified, the least you can do for Danfield is to create a volunteer fire department.
Yours very truly,
Lucille Carmichael
PS: I plan to vote for you in the next election. That is, if the polling place hasn’t burned down.
Tumblr media
In response to their letter, they are visited by Captain Metcalf (Patrick McVey) of the Ridgebury Fired Department.
Tumblr media
Jerry and Sherman are appointed Junior Firemen. This is a real-life program for youth run by most American and British fire departments to encourage home safety in fire prevention. Talking about the potential for a fire, Lucy says she doesn’t want to be known as one of the “Last of the Red Hot Mamas.”
Tumblr media
The episode uses a fire pole and a Moreland fire truck. Both are employed for comic effect.
Tumblr media
Lucy and Viv rehearse putting on their fire fighter uniforms, calmly timing themselves as they do. When a real fire alarm sounds, the moment is comically chaotic.
Tumblr media
When Metcalf is training the women at the old firehouse, there is a Smokey Bear Forest Fire Prevention poster behind him. This particular design was first issued in 1953.
Tumblr media
Captain Metcalf claims that the reason the Danfield volunteer fire brigade will consist of all females is because so many men commute to New York, further reinforcing that fictional Danfield is a bedroom community of Manhattan.
Tumblr media
In connection with this episode, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance were made honorary fire chiefs of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They were photographed wearing official white helmets with Henri O'Bryant, vice president of the Fire Commission, Fred Kline, commission president, and LA Fire Chief William L. Miller.
Tumblr media
Because the episode was shot out of order, the fire fighter plotline is not mentioned in the next two episodes, but resumes in “Lucy’s Barbershop Quartet” (1962). Since all the members of the group are members of the Danfield Volunteer Fire Brigade, the quartet is named The Four Alarms.
Tumblr media
Again, the storyline is put on the back burner for two episodes, until “Lucy Drives a Dump Truck” (1963). After promising the Volunteer Fire Department that the town council will pay for their new uniforms, the girls find that they will be stuck for the cost themselves. They want to relieve Lucy as captain, until she comes up with the idea of selling newspapers for salvage.
Tumblr media
In addition to Lucy and Viv, the members of the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department are: Thelma Green (Carole Cook), Audrey Simmons (Mary Jane Croft), Dorothy Boyer (Ruth Crews, later Dorothy Konrad), Babette Edwards (Karen Norris), Frances (Mary Wickes), Colleen (Renita Reachi), Pauline Lopus, Grace, as well as background performers Bess Flowers and Hazel Pierce.
Tumblr media
The next time we hear about the volunteer fire department, the show is being filmed (but not initially aired) in color!  “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (1963). The women recruite acting coach Professor Gitterman (Hans Conried) to help them stage the production.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Viv Play Softball” (1963) ~ Lucy and Viv are usually bench warmers when the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department plays softball, but a member’s preganancy lands them on the field.
Tumblr media
"Lucy Puts Out a Fire at the Bank” (1963) ~ When the town council refuses to fund the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department, Lucy takes her brigade for some training to impress Mr. Mooney, then sets a small fire at the bank to demonstrate their worth!  Mr. Mooney wants Danfield to be served by New Rochelle's Fire Department. In previous episodes they were served by Ridgebury.
Tumblr media
The Danfield Volunteer Fire Department has a service record of:
43 cat rescues; 12 of them of the same cat.
8 clogged up chimney flues unclogged.
16 piles of burning leaves were extinguished.
1 lawsuit against the city for water damage at the Armenian restaurant for an incident surrounding flaming shish-kabob on a sword.
Tumblr media
Their training is led by Captain Burke (Alan Hale Jr.).  This is the final episode of the fire brigade plotline, ending a year after it is introduced.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Coin Collector” (1964), Lucy and Viv stand on the street in front of a bright yellow fire hydrant. Along with the mailbox, the fire hydrant was a standard set dressing for scenes taking place on city streets.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Disc Jockey” (1965), the last episode set in Danfield, Lucy uses a fire extinguisher when the control board explodes. The radio station is covered in foam for the rest of the episode. The moment was included in the show’s opening montage.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Makes a Few Extra Dollars” (1971) ~ Lucy Carter breaks out a fire extinguisher when Harry sets a fire in the office waste basket.
Tumblr media
Larry J. Blake plays the fireman who comes to extinguish the trash can blaze.
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Punctured Romance” (1972) ~ Lucy burns the roast causing the fire department to smash the front door glass. Larry J. Blake returns as the Fire Cheif (wearing the same uniform), joined by Orwin C. Harvey and Sid Gould.

World in crisis a grim backdrop for UN climate talks (AP) Envoys from around the globe gathered Sunday in the Egyptian seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for talks on tackling climate change that come as the world also grapples with multiple crises, including the war in Ukraine, high inflation, food shortages and an energy crunch. More than 40,000 participants have been registered for this year’s talks, reflecting the sense of urgency as major weather events around the world impact many people and cost billions of dollars in repairs. Egypt said over 120 world leaders will attend, many of them speaking at a high-level event on Nov. 7-8, while U.S. President Joe Biden was expected to arrive later in the week.
As Housing Costs Soar, Co-Living Makes a Comeback (NYT) At first, Lindsey Tindage, a 27-year-old corporate recruiter, was leery of co-living, a housing model that brings strangers together in a dormitory-like arrangement. Now, a year and a half after renting a bedroom in a furnished Brooklyn apartment shared with strangers, Ms. Tindage is hooked. “Co-living took all the stress out of moving,” she said. After a rocky period during the pandemic when interest in living with strangers plunged, co-living providers are now counting on satisfied customers like Ms. Tindage to help reinvigorate their business. With housing costs soaring, the demand for alternate forms is growing, and “dorms for adults,” as co-living arrangements are often called, are on an upswing across the country.
The daylight savings time debate (The Hill) It’s time for that American tradition when we bemoan changing our clocks by falling back an hour because daylight saving time (DST) is over. Each time we change clocks, be it in the spring or fall, news stories and morning shows talk up the changes. Some of the coverage is about the history of the practice and whether daylight saving time was designed to help farmers or was created by Ben Franklin. But there is also handwringing about the potential problems that can occur when we change our clocks by an hour. In fact, there is evidence that car accidents increase and that the disruption to sleep and circadian rhythms can affect heart health in the days after the time change. Regardless, most Americans seem to like springing forward for spring and summer so that we can have long evenings and late sunsets. Maybe that’s why Congress jumped on board the absurdly named Sunshine Protection Act of 2021, which would make daylight savings time permanent. Under this plan, we would turn our clocks forward and never back again. The funny thing is that we tried this plan twice (as recently as the 1970s) and it failed; Americans hated it.
Monarch butterflies return to Mexico on annual migration (AP) The first monarch butterflies have appeared in the mountaintop forests of central Mexico where they spend the winter, Mexico’s Environment Department said Saturday. The first butterflies have been seen exploring the mountaintop reserves in th states of Mexico and Michoacan, apparently trying to decide where to settle this year. The main group of butterflies is expected to arrive in the coming weeks, depending on weather conditions. Each year, generally in March, the monarchs migrate back to the United States and Canada. After wintering in Mexico, the butterflies fly north, breeding multiple generations along the way for thousands of miles. The offspring that reach southern Canada begin the trip back to Mexico at the end of summer.
Thousands march in Peru, demanding resignation of leftist President Castillo (Reuters) Thousands of people took to the streets across Peru on Saturday to demand the resignation of embattled President Pedro Castillo, a leftist whose government is under investigation for corruption. Castillo has called those who oppose his government “reactionaries” and “the enemies of people”. Police with helmets and plastic shields launched several tear gas canisters in an attempt to disperse the crowds. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Castillo, who took office in July last year, has already survived two impeachment attempts. Opposition legislators are seeking a fresh trial against the president even though Congress recognized it would not gather sufficient votes.
U.S. privately asks Ukraine to show Russia it’s open to talks, Washington Post reports (Reuters) The Biden administration is privately encouraging Ukraine’s leaders to signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Vladimir Putin is removed from power, the Washington Post reported on Saturday. The paper quoted unnamed people familiar with the discussions as saying that the request by American officials was not aimed at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table, but a calculated attempt to ensure Kyiv maintains the support of other nations facing constituencies wary of fueling a war for many years to come. It said the discussions illustrated the complexity of the Biden administration’s position on Ukraine, as U.S. officials publicly vow to support Kyiv with massive sums of aid “for as long as it takes” while hoping for a resolution to the eight-month conflict that has taken a big toll on the world economy and triggered fears of nuclear war. The paper said U.S. officials shared the assessment of their Ukrainian counterparts that Putin is not for now serious about negotiations, but acknowledged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s ban on talks with him had generated concern in parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America, where the war’s effects on costs of food and fuel are felt most sharply.
Kyiv Planning for Evacuation if It Loses Electricity (NYT) As they struggle to maintain an electricity grid heavily damaged by Russian missiles, officials in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, say they have begun planning for a once unthinkable possibility: a complete blackout that would require the evacuation of the city’s approximately three million remaining residents. The situation is already so dire, with 40 percent of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure damaged or destroyed, that municipal workers are setting up 1,000 heating shelters that can double as bunkers while engineers try to fix bombed-out power stations without the needed equipment. To try to keep the grid from failing altogether, Ukraine’s national energy utility said on Saturday that it would continue to impose rolling blackouts in seven regions. The tremendous strain on Ukraine’s ability to provide power is the result of the widespread bombardment by Russian forces of critical energy infrastructure across the country, a tactic that analysts say President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has resorted to as his troops have suffered repeated setbacks on the battlefield. The damage caused by the Russian strikes has heaped new suffering on Ukraine’s civilians and forced officials to reckon with the possibility that further damage could render them unable to provide basic services.
Pope ends Bahrain trip with visit to Gulf’s oldest church (Reuters) Pope Francis departed from Bahrain on Sunday after a four-day trip that culminated with a visit to the Gulf’s oldest Catholic church, where he told bishops, priests and nuns to remain united as they ministered to the faithful in the majority Muslim area. Francis, who suffers from a knee ailment that forced him to use a wheelchair during the trip, told local Catholic leaders to avoid factions, quarrels and gossip. “Worldly divisions, but also ethnic, cultural and ritual differences, cannot injure or compromise the unity of the Spirit,” he said. Pope Francis’ visit, where he closed an East-West dialogue hosted by Bahrain, continues his policy of improving ties with the Islamic world following a historic visit to the United Arab Emirates in 2019.
Qatar’s vast wealth helps it host FIFA World Cup (AP) Qatar is home to some 2.9 million people, but only a small fraction—around one in 10—are Qatari citizens. They enjoy massive wealth and benefits fueled by Qatar’s shared control of one of the world’s largest reserves of natural gas. The tiny country on the eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula juts out into the Persian Gulf. There lies the North Field, the world’s largest underwater gas field, which Qatar shares with Iran. The gas field holds approximately 10% of the world’s known natural gas reserves. Oil and gas have made the 50-year-old country fantastically wealthy and influential. In a matter of decades, Qatar’s roughly 300,000 citizens have been pulled from the hard livelihood of fishing and pearl diving. The country is now an international transit hub with a profitable national airline, a force behind the influential Al Jazeera news network and is paying for the expansion of the largest U.S. military base in the Mideast.
Hundreds of elephants, wildebeests and zebras dead in Kenya amid prolonged drought (CNN) Hundreds of elephants, wildebeests, and zebras have died across Kenya amid the nation’s longest drought in decades. Prolonged drought across the Horn of Africa over the past four consecutive rainy seasons has left some 18 million people affected by food shortages in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, according to reports from the World Food Programme. The UN’s World Meteorological Organization said the drought is the region’s longest in four decades. In Kenya, back-to-back seasons of below average rainfall have caused riverbeds to dry up and destroyed grasslands in game reserves, according to the tourism ministry.
New Report Sheds Light On Pentagon’s Secret Wars Playbook (The Intercept) The United States has fought more than a dozen “secret wars” over the last two decades, according to a new report from the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University’s School of Law. Through a combination of ground combat, airstrikes, and operations by U.S. proxy forces, these conflicts have raged from Africa to the Middle East to Asia, often completely unknown to the American people and with minimal congressional oversight. “This proliferation of secret war is a relatively recent phenomenon, and it is undemocratic and dangerous,” wrote Katherine Yon Ebright, counsel in the Brennan Center’s Liberty and National Security Program. These clandestine conflicts have been enabled by the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force, enacted in the wake of the September 11 attacks, as well as the covert action statute, which allows secret, unattributed operations, primarily conducted by the CIA. The United States has also relied on a set of obscure security cooperation authorities that The Intercept has previously investigated, including in an exposé earlier this year that revealed the existence of unreported U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen. Ebright documents so-called 127e programs, known by their legal designation, in those countries and 12 others: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Iraq, Kenya, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, and Tunisia, as well as a country in the Asia-Pacific region that has not yet been publicly identified.
