Fooduary Day 3: Strawberry Shortcake
Apparently strawberry shortcakes got their whipped cream variation in France, 1910. As the quintessential unemployed artist I’ve worked in a few kitchens and I’ve made dozens of Strawberry shortcakes. Though technically they were strawberry shortcakes in name only because they were technically strawberry angel food cakes. Either way they are delicious, and deeply nostalgic. Eating strawberry shortcakes in the peak of their summer season? Local? You wouldn’t believe how sweet they get.

Fooduary Day 23: Lollipop
Sugar on a stick is an unsurprisingly old idea, according to my sources they started to resemble lollipops in Europe in the Middle Ages. I had no idea how I was going to incorporate a lollipop stick into a medieval fashion and THEN I remembered the hennin (the very extra conical headdress). The design came together rather quickly after that.

Fooduary Day 21: Chocolate Brownies
Allegedly chocolate brownies were invented in 1893, but the claim is mostly legend until a 1899 cookbook published a recipe. I looked at my options and decided the 1899 fashion I was looking at better suited my purposes, so I rolled with it.

Fooduary Day 19: Parfait
"You know what else has layers? Parfait, everyone loves parfait." (It's an automatic response, there's no cure for 2000s nostalgia). The recipe for parfait was originally published in 1867, and lucky for me it's a fashion moment with plenty of frills and layers for me to design with! But of course with a lot more strawberries and blueberries.

Fooduary 2024, days 1-8!
Sometimes you have to look back and celebrate the completed challenges. Do you think you'd be able to guess which desserts they are referencing if you hadn't been following along? Maybe some of them I think.

Fooduary Day 24: Donut
Okay so a deep fried dough ball technically started in Ancient Rome… but we’ve been there so… we’re jumping ahead from there to to the 1485 recipe for “Gefüllte Krapfen” a German sugar-free, stuffed, fried dough cake. But I got a teeny bit distracted by a portrait from 1535 because I was already off script and I was transfixed by her puffy slashed sleeves that were giving me a lot more donut than… well literally the lollipop design. I tried to use donut bun colors in her dress with lots of powdered sugar and jam filling references.

Fooduary 2024, days 17-24
I'm pretty sure I got everybody in the right order... but I also might have gotten a few a little mixed up.

Fooduary Day 28: Cannoli
The history of the cannoli is an interesting one, which is why I did it anyway despite not being really confident about my design. Not my best idea? Maybe, so take this design with a healthy serving of salt it’s based more on Byzantine style art than more specific location examples because I could only find a handful of illustrations of men which wasn’t the most helpful. Allegedly the cannoli was invented around 827-1091 Sicily. At this time it was the Emirate of Sicily, so I could only really find a few photos of figures from this period from the ceiling of Cappella Palatina in Palermo that were even close to the place+era I was looking for. The Fatimid Caliphate decorated Sicily mostly with script and zoomorphic designs so it’s only really this chapel that had preserved figures illustrated at all. So she kind of has a powdered sugar mother Mary look going on…

Fooduary Day 14: Cheesecake
(Happy Valentine’s Day) the cheesecake is also in the running for oldest dessert on this prompt. The first written record of it is from 230 AD in Ancient Greece, but they are allegedly older. Raise your hand if you were surprised by this fun fact because I certainly was!

Fooduary Day 27: Orange Chocolate Cake
So orange chocolate cake isn’t tracked as specifically time wise as other entries but in 1828 a machine was developed that extracted fat from cacao liquor and created byproducts that would change baking forever (and make it way less expensive for everyone to enjoy). It helped that I hadn’t drawn any 1830s ish fashion and it’s such a fun era I was happy to commit to it!

Fooduary Day 25: Macaron
It is all about the pastels for macarons… it’s a staple of coquette aesthetics for a reason! So the origin of little almond cookies is a very old sort of idea however they gained fame as macarons in the 1790s so that’s what I’m sticking with! It helps that it’s a unique sort of fashion moment that suits my purposes. ;)

Fooduary Day 4: Mixed Berry Tart
Tarts are an old, old, old kind of food. However it wasn’t until the invention of enriched dough (shortcrust) in the 1550s that the pastry outside (previously called coffin because it was effectively a box-plate for the edible center) was meant to be eaten with the filling. With this one it's more about the colors being a mixed berry palette than something more literal like some of the others but this is supposed to be a for fun challenge so I'm not sweating over it. Maybe the others are too cheesy?

Fooduary Day 29: Trifle
The Trifle had its first recipe in a 1585 English cookbook so of course I had to go all out on this final day of the challenge. It’s been a really fun time, I’m so happy I did this challenge month… but I also need so many naps now. (TT v TT). I hope you’ve enjoyed these as much as I have!

Fooduary Day 8: Key Lime Pie
Another 1930s invention (allegedly since hard dates are when cookbooks are published and no always the first one made), what I’ve discovered are that since a lot of the foods on this list are American classics we’re going to see 1908 to 1970 as the date range for a lot of these... unless I decide to go off script. Could happen. Anyway, for some reason my family as a whole wasn't big on pies so I can't actually say I've ever had key lime pie. Have you? Is it your favorite pie?

Fooduary Day 22: Tres Leches
So today might have supposed to be Pumpkin pie but I’ve already done a pie I’m not a fan of and an orange-focused color palette so…. One spontaneous “fun desserts from around the world” search later I got inspired by tres leches! A tres leches cake is a sponge cake soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk and whole milk (thus the name three milk cake). A 19th century invention in Nicaragua it remains a super popular dessert to this day. I was inspired by Trencilla dresses which are worn for all sorts of marimba dances.

Fooduary Day 16: Carrot Cake
In 1814 a super popular recipe for a “Gateau de Carottes” was published. Theoretically they evolved from carrot puddings but I maintain that there’s a difference that matters. Carrot cake isn’t necessarily my go-to cake but it is tasty and cream cheese frosting is always a fabulous bonus.
