1. Why don’t you ship it?

idk dude, i just really don't think this is one you can enemies to lovers through, their dynamic is pretty aggressively hostile and rooted in very deep aspects of their characters. miranda's ditching cerberus is because of reaching a moral event horizon, and she never really expresses guilt or remorse about being involved with them; on the flip side, jack will probably never be fully "over" what cerberus did to her, and for very good reason. it's a pretty hefty thing to ask jack to set aside miranda not only volunteering to work with cerb, but being tim's right hand, especially when miri doesn't really seem to actually regret anything she did while working with them.

that sounds like i dislike miri. i don't. i love her actually. but boy howdy she has a lot of (very fun and sexy) flaws. i support them gaining each other's respect, but i just don't think she and jack would ever get along well enough for anything to work out long-term.

2. What would have made you like it?

i think it might work out much, much further in the future, after they've both had more time to recover and come to terms with everything. and let them do it separately. let miranda keep growing, keep walking down the path she's already on towards acknowledging she was at the heart of terrible things and addressing them. just admitting to shepard she wanted to chip them is huge for her! great job! but she needs to keep going. and let jack keep growing, too; let her settle, let her find her place in the galaxy and reconcile with her demons.

and then, once they're older and calmer, then they can come back together, and let them talk out the elephant in the room, and maybe then they can start something new.

3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

i do think they have potential, like outlined above. you could also do something interesting with the inherent toxicity of aforementioned elephant, how if they were to end up hatefucking or whatever the tension from that one unaddressed issue could poison everything or potentially force them to turbo-boost their character arcs and finally have the heart-to-heart they need to. there's potential, i'll give it that.

wrex/shepard: ship it

this was harder to decide on lol im not really that invested in it but fuck it, im down to be convinced, if there's a good concept behind it and that's the ship then sure i'll follow you down the rabbit hole

1. What made you ship it?

i mean really just "sure, why not?" lol. they're good friends, they can date a lil, why not?

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

really strong foundation of an existing friendship, i'm a sucker for fire-forged friends, and with how much wrex has been through i could get behind him and shep bonding in that way only people who've been through absolute hell can.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

i'm not the person who messaged about miranda and jack but i follow you because of them so i read the fic you linked and, no offence meant to them, your fic is so much better it's the top fic imo

Oh that's VERY kind even if I don't think I agree. That fic cemented them in my brain in such a formative way, I don't think I would have been as interested in the ship overall without it. Definitely influenced my approach. But that's very sweet and very affirming!

Tbh I DID end up rereading one of my own jackanda fics this morning and it definitely made me miss them. Like I said before I haven't really had any new ideas and my motivation for picking up my old WIPs is pretty non-existent ATM, but you all are always welcome to send prompts. Can never guarantee they'll get done, but who knows, it could spark something for me

I was tagged by @meikuree​, thank you! I must also confess to just how many WIPs I have, because I hoard my ideas and divide them into various subfolders. A lot of these are in various stages of ‘progress,’ including some that I haven’t touched in literally years because I am waiting to see if I get back into the fandom or pick up interest. hey thoughts on miranda and jackanda specifically,

Yo I fucking LOVE Miranda okay---she kind of fulfills the Cassandra role in ME2; there when you wake up, very competent but mistrusted by some of your teammates, skeptical of you but follows orders and doesn’t question your leadership, able to be won over and be a very warm and close friend. Idk man call me a sucker for the Bioware ice queen archetype lol but I loved Miranda pretty much immediately. And of course think she’d make a great f/f romance option but we suffer in this world.

Full disclosure I’ve never once made the Paragon/Renegade check by the time Jack and Miranda face off, and I’ve always sided with Miranda lol.  Last playthrough I actually committed to going full Renegade so I was able to win Jack back over, but idk Jack the way she is in ME2 just kinda drives me crazy and I don’t really mind foregoing talking to her for awhile.  So it’d be hard for me to ship her with Miranda just bc I’m kinda meh about her.  I definitely feel a lot of sympathy for her situation/don’t hate her or wish her ill at all, I just don’t like a lot of her dialogue.  I do like her a lot more in ME3 but I was an idiot last playthrough and didn’t do Grissom Academy in time so :(((

For Jackanda Day! and @unklarity - Happy Birthday!

It was – dismal, to say the least. A story book swamp, wet and squelching under Miranda's boots, the day gray and rainy, trees skeletal in the pale, misty afternoon light.

Foreboding was the right word. She thought of the guards she'd left behind back at the inn, but she could not have brought them with her, all her informants had warned her against it. It was understandable, no one took to a large party of armed guards coming to visit unannounced.

She drew her cloak closer around herself and marched on. A few minutes later, she finally spotted the hut between a ring of spindly, ghostly birches.

It was not the chicken-legged monstrosity from her childhood fairy tales, in fact it was rather unassuming. Just a hut.

Miranda approached without hesitation and rapped loudly on the door.

It swung open abruptly, only darkness on the other side.

“What do you want?”

The voice was harsh, which she'd half expected. But Miranda would have like a face, a person to go with it.

And she'd quite have liked to get out of the rain, too.

“I've come to request your assistance in a matter...”

“Why does a pretty princess need my help?”

A face came into view, out of the shadows, as though floating, until Miranda realized that the woman was clad all in black, hooded in black.

“I am not a princess, in fact I am a countess, if you must know.”

She had large, dark eyes, rimmed darker even, and they seemed to see right through her, lips curling into a half-smirk.

“You gave off a very princessy air. My mistake. So? What do you need from me?”

“Will you let me in, or are basic manners also too princessy?”

The witch just cackled, but stepped aside, and Miranda pushed past her into the low-ceilinged room, glad to be out of the rain.

“Don't drip on Charlie.”

Miranda frowned, eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness.

“Who's...”

A large ginger cat jumped from a bed in a corner behind the large fireplace, and came to rub against Miranda's legs, bushy tail held high.

“Charlie doesn't seem to mind. What kind of name is that for a witch's cat, anyway?”

“I didn't pick it, you'll have to ask him that.”

There was a moment's silence, then:

“I need to find my sister. I hear you can see, can find -”

“A sister?” There was surprise in her voice, gone the next moment. “And what do I get in return?”

Miranda huffed.

“What do you want? I can give you many things, but if you're going to ask for my first-born child, that'll be highly unlikely.”

All the more reason to find Oriana, but not the reason. The reason was simply that she had a little sister, one she hadn't even known existed until a few weeks ago. Who might need her, for all she knew.

“Your help in return,” the witch said suddenly, and Miranda, though not happy with the lack of detail, nodded.

“Whatever you want.”

“A dangerous thing to promise.” The witch looked at her, then motioned towards a bench by the fireplace. “Sit. Tell me all about your sister. I need a little more to work with.”

Miranda sat down, the warmth not unwelcome. The witch - “Jack”, she'd been told, but that couldn't be right, could it? - sat down beside her and for the first time Miranda noticed the lines and symbols that marked her hands, ran up beneath the sleeves of her cloak. When she took a closer look, she saw them on the witch's throat as well.

She was curious, but decided not to ask. It was none of her business, after all.

“I've never known her. My... our father kept her from me. But he's... gone now. I only recently heard the story from an old servant of his. Her name is Oriana. I've heard she was taken to one of the southern cities, but my people found no trace.”

She was surprised when the witch closed her eyes, frowning hard. For a while – much too long in Miranda's opinion – she sat there, still as a statue, until her eyes flew open.

“There is a trace. In your blood. It's faint, but I'm sure I can follow it. I'll need ingredients for a proper spell though. Stuff I don't have here.”

Miranda nodded.

“Name it and my people will get it.”

“I do like the way you work, princess.”

Top three tv shows: Well, I’m really obsessed with Westworld right now, so that. Also, Legend of Korra. And then...Avatar The Last Airbender, I guess. Those are the ones I only feel like watching and rewatching a bunch. Once I’m done obsessing over Westworld I’m sure Steven Universe will move back into my top 3.

Top three ships: Korrasami (Korra and Asami from Legend of Korra), Jackanda (Miranda Lawson & Jack Subject Zero from ME2/3 and by god do they burn like a fiery star in my soul. I realize this more and more every day), Fleurmione (Fleur Delacour and Hermione Granger from the magical world of Harry Potter)

Top three bands: Florence and the Machine, The Killers, and I can’t really pick a third right now. I’ve transitioned away from listening to albums all the way through to assembling my own playlists. But I mean, I’ll listen to just about anything from those first two. My god they defined my teens and early 20s.

Three favourite foods: Er, I really like food in general so this is hard. Cheese, as a thing, is delicious? I love bagels. Salmon, tuna, usually raw and prepared as sushi, though I’m eating a lot less of it now that I live in a land-locked state

Currently reading: Homo Sacer, a theory book by Giorgio Agamben that I picked up because my media and pop culture prof just said, “shame one you” when he learned most of our class hadn’t read it.

some sketchy sketchy sketches playing with the relationship dynamics in my  mass effect high school sports team au that nobody asked for! ya I’m aware most of these don’t ACTUALLY look like high schoolers, but if I could be assed to draw them up proper I swear they’d look much younger okay. 

NOTES UNDER THE CUT

JACKANDA: miranda mostly just put up with her dad’s infuriating obsession with controlling her life - up until the day shepard beat her to be class president and miranda was grounded for not winning when she hadn’t wanted to run for it anyway. that was the day she snapped and decided enough was enough; she hatched a plan with her little sister to prove to their father that she didn’t care about his approval, and what better way to piss him off than date the most “inappropriate” person possible, jacqueline “jack” nought, school rebel. jack reluctantly agrees to date miranda when money is offered (her foster parents won’t pay for the tattoo she wants) and fluctuates between taking great satisfaction from making the precious ickle cheerleader flustered with public displays of affection and ruining her “good girl” reputation, and being utterly furious at herself for actually kind of enjoying dating miranda...

SHAKARIAN: shep and garrus were best friends for years and honestly never considered pursuing anything more than platonic until they kissed as a joke at a valentines party. nothing changed, but they were both intensely aware that they actually kind of...liked it. after a few days of intense awkwardness, shep breaks and babbles that, like maybe she’d sort of, kind of, like to mash mouths again, at some time, in the future, maybe? and maybe it would be cool if they, like, went out...not like now but like, soon...ish? thankfully for her garrus is so relieved that she brought it up first that he also babbles like an idiot, and then they both laugh and everything’s fine. they’re still best friends, but now they hold hands and make out in the bus after Sport practice.

T’SOVIK: history nerd liara is super excited when transfer student javik arrives, as she’s always been fascinated by the ancient culture of his country, but he is immediately repelled by her, feeling uncomfortable with the way she treats his ancestors like story characters rather than real people, and her general disinterest in the modern-day culture of his country. he vents this ire by being snappish and mean with her without explaining why, which leads to liara feeling hurt and getting defensive. this all comes to a head when shepard, sick of there being tension between two of her players in Sport practice, locks them both in the Normandy bus and refuses to let them out until they’ve talked through their problems. reluctantly, they do, and what follows is an awkward but considerably more respectful sort-of-friendship. they have a lot of the same classes, so javik often ends up guiding liara through crowded corridors when she becomes so engrossed in talking about her special interest that she forgets how to not walk into people...

TALI/KAL: kal’s two years older than tali and works for her dad as a sort of apprentice - mostly he watches rael work, helps fix the lab machines, takes a couple of security shifts, and picks tali up from school when rael’s working late...which is most days. tali will talk about her tech projects to anyone who’ll listen, and kal is a very good listener with a lot of ideas of his own, so although tali initially resents kal for getting her father’s attention when she never could, the two actually end up getting on incredibly well. kal, much to his mortification, quickly realises that he’s smitten with tali’s feisty take-no-shit attitude and her technical brilliance, but firmly resolves to ignore it in case the age difference makes tali uncomfortable (and because rael is weirdly protective of his daughter and would probably fire him and kick his ass if he ever made a move). tali is totally oblivious to kal’s crush but thinks that he’s pretty hot and casually tells kasumi that she’d totally be into it if he ever asked...CUE HILARIOUS AND AWKWARD TEENAGE ROMANCE TROPES as kasumi decides to stealthily set the two up together!

“Hey,” Shepard says, voice low as she steps out into the hall. “Thanks for coming.”

The silence that follows is no less awkward for its brevity. A dozen questions rest on Miranda’s tongue:

Is she okay? How did this happen? Did she tell you to call me? How long have you known? Does everyone know? What gave it away? Do you think this is a mistake? Will you say we should call it off? Will you try to convince us if we don’t?

She opts for none of them, instead shifting in her towering heels, trying to pretend it doesn’t feel this strange to be dressed for a nice dinner in the hall of Shepard’s apartment. “No problem,” she says, nodding stiffly. “Is she in there?”

Shepard hesitates a moment, running a hand over her cropped hair. “Yes. But—”

“Can she stand?”

“Yes. But she—”

It clicks, then.

“She doesn’t know I’m here.”

“She wouldn’t have wanted me to call you,” Shepard winces a little, as she says it.

Anon, stop telling me what I want to hear! I'm already was too self-indulgent as a writer. I've got SO much anxiety over the timeline bc the events of ME3 are so tricky to write around. I wanted to give myself a universe that was internally consistent to write in and Ice was that for like a few months before I immediately fucked it up lmao. I was like "oh, this is just an inconsequential oneshot that needs a different setting for convenience sake, it won't even be a big deal" BUT THEN I MADE IT TOO GOOD

The main reason I don't want to abandon Ice to Never is that I have other ideas for stuff set during the events of me3 I wanna explore. Like, Miranda finding out about Cerberus attacking Grissom Academy and something set around the Citadel DLC to name a few. But...

18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?

To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson, “I cannot remember the books I've read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.” My brain is a weird squirrel that hoards a million things and forgets what they were, but I know I tend to unconsciously borrow or get influenced by what I read. It's not like a cut and paste copying (though in fandom things it's more likely that I adopt headcanons or lines and while I try to pay my respects to the original writer, I may forget where I first saw it) and sometimes it is a deliberate nod and wink towards a particular author.

Examples: in Cats, ‘Claws, and Other Animal Disasters I was soaking in a lot of fandom meta and spitballing, so things like somebody discovering an old seed vault, the existence of traveling librarians, the popularity of cowgirl romances, Deacon going to New Vegas (and banging FISTO and/or Marcus), the fact that Glory and Dez adopt a million animals, all of that fed into the background of the fic and affected my worldbuilding and setting. A smaller (but still relevant) example is that in A Christmas Truce, I mentioned that ‘she plays for the Harpies’ is a common wizarding slang for saying a woman likes other women, but for the life of me I can't remember where I first read it. I'm 90% sure it's from one of Woldy’s fics because I did a huge binge on their archive a while back but I can't actually remember.

And I know these are details, bits of world building rather than ‘style’ per se but I know one of my fave things when I read a fanfic is when the writer puts in a lot of loving work on fleshing things out, adding a sense of immersion that we can't always get from the original source, so in that sense yes, it does affect my style.

For sheer use of language, like lushness and specificity of word choice, I always turn to poetry. Some poets on my (virtual) bookshelf are Neruda, Clementine von Radics, Warsan Shire, and Yehuda Amichai. I am currently very slowly reading through a complete collection of Yehuda Amichai’s works, which I picked up over a year ago because I was making an effort to read more work that had been translated into English.

I also absolutely fell deeply in love with fics by montparnasse (No Bed of Roses is the first story I read from her and remains my favorite Jackanda fic ever), Stonestrewn (I think I started with the Dinner time fics), and have been endlessly fascinated by cosmoscorpse’s use of nonlinear storytelling and the interplay of memory and reflection. (Which was a very strong influence, if not THE influence, for Was/Am/Will Be)

I'm trying to more consciously consider structure and POV when I write, so for original work I feel like I have to point to Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller books and NK Jemisin’s Fifth Season (Broken Earth trilogy, but I haven’t actually read the following books yet…)

Beyond that, I just read a lot. I can't always point and make a direct line between what I read and what I write, but I know it happens. (Even if it's something I don't like, I'm the kind of person that tries to pick apart why I don't like it so I can avoid it in my own work.) I try to read a mix of original work and fanfic, some different genres (though I lean very heavy into science fiction and fantasy), nonfiction, and specifically seeking works that were written by diverse authors. It's not perfect by any means but I like to think it keeps me from stagnating.
